Port Antonio beaches: some of the best in Jamaica

The white beaches of Port Antonio are among the most beautiful in Jamaica. Although this sleepy town is not as well known as the more popular areas like Negril or Ocho Rios, it has been a secret, getaway for many celebrities looking forward to rest and seclusion. Actor Errol Flynn visited the town over 50 years ago, fell in love with the locale and bought a home on Navy Beach where he regularly entertained his famous friends. It was even featured in the 1988 Hollywood film “Cocktail” starring Tom Cruise.

Public beaches

Getting to the public beaches is easy. Some are free while others charge a small fee to spend the day. The great thing about these beaches is they don’t get as crowded as other Jamaican towns. It’s easier to find a spot on the beach and more opportunity to enjoy all of the fun water activities available.

The crystal-clear waters are a stunning sight. Enjoy a full day of sun and surf with the family. Grab a snack from a nearby jerk stand, and then take a dip in the warm, soothing water.

Clothing optional

Clothing optional or nude beaches are nothing new to the Caribbean. Although they are more popular in places like Negril, couples looking to go au naturel also have that option in Port Antonio.

You won’t find public nude beaches in Jamaica, but you will find private ones. Port Antonio has one small clothing optional beach where visitors can enjoy much more privacy than other locations on the island. If you’re traveling with small children you may decide to avoid these locations. It’s always a good idea to ask around to make sure you get to your desired destination.

Fun in the sun

Port Antonio’s beaches may be tame compared to others in Jamaica, but they have all the fun activities you’d find at any other exotic location. There is surfing, cruising diving, fishing snorkeling and sailing to enjoy. There are peaceful beaches with gentle surfs ideal for relaxing and lying in the sun. Of course you’ll also find beaches with impressing waves perfect for surfing or body boarding. Divers will find the water off Port Antonio remains relatively calm making wall diving a popular activity.

Deep sea fishing is another sport that attracts hundreds of visitors to this tiny parish. Deep sea anglers come in search of tuna, kingfish, wahoo, and dolphin. It is also the location of the Blue Marlin Tournament.

More water fun

There are other areas of the island besides the coastline where you can enjoy water fun. The Blue Lagoon is a calm, deep green, watery pool where you can enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving and more water activities.

An island is the perfect vacation destination. Of course no island getaway is complete without a trip to the beach. You’ll find some of Jamaica’s most beautiful beaches in Port Antonio.

Travelers will discover some of the most breath taking attractions in Port of Antonio, Jamaica. This small town was once a bustling banana-shipping port in the late 1870s. Tourists from North American began visiting the charming Caribbean jewel during the late 1890s and have been coming back ever since. And why not? Port Antonia is as lush and beautiful as any other part of the island. It’s become the favorite hide-away for many celebrities and other famous people who have fallen in love keep coming back.

Although it doesn’t always get the same recognition as the island’s other well-traveled towns, you’ll find lots to see and do during your stay.

Reach Falls

Reach Falls is an incredible natural collection of waterfalls tucked away within a peaceful rainforest. Waterfalls cascade over one another into a series of green pools. This was the location of a memorable scene in the 1988 Ton Cruise film “Cocktail.” It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. You’ll find changing rooms and bathrooms readily available so that you can enjoy the beauty of the falls up close and personal. Pay attention to the signs warning visitors of deep water and strong currents.

Crystal Springs Resort

This local eco-park is a must see for those looking for a bit of island adventure. The resort covers 158 acres. Explore one of the Caribbean’s largest orchid collections and over 15,000 plant species. You can also visit the bird sanctuary and see several species native to the island like the ring-tailed pigeon, Jamaican parakeet and chestnut-bellied cuckoo. There are even hotel accommodations conveniently on the property.

Blue Lagoon

Blue lagoon is one of the more interesting attractions you’ll experience. This unique mineral pool of deep blue water that appears to change color with the changing light of the day. The locals say the water is bottomless, but experts say that it is measured to be 180 feet deep. The lagoon is framed by Jamaican flora and lush plants hanging over the edges of the hills surrounding the water.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports like kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving sailing, spring bathing swimming or just relaxing. Other attractions include a nearby restaurant that serves up tasty local cuisine and the villas at the lagoon for convenient lodging.

Titchfield Peninsula and other historic attractions

Port Antonio has quite a history, and there are many fascinating attractions that help tell its story. The Titchfield Peninsula was the first part of Jamaica to be settled by the English. It is a double harbor that separates the East Harbor from the West Harbor. See the historic ruins of the historic Fort George which once protected the harbor. Guests travel to the peninsula from West Street by ferry every 30 minutes.

Mooretown is a Maroon community founded in 1739 after the Peace Treaty between the English and the Maroons was signed. It’s where direct descendants of the Maroon heroine, Nanny and Maroon hero Quao, also called the “Invisible Hunter,” live. Nanny is also buried there at a sight called Bump Grave.

Port Antonio has so many amazing attractions to enjoy. It’s so much more than sun and sand. This town is filled with fascinating historical facts behind these sights. There is something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Enjoy the local attractions on your own or with a tour guide for a vacation experience you won’t forget.

Unforgettable Port Antonio tours in Jamaica

Tours are often the highlight of vacationers visiting Port Antonio. There is much more to this quiet town than meets the eye. Some say Jamaican tourism was born in Port Antonio. During the late 1900’s it was considered the banana capital of world. Soon boats were not just shipping off to other countries delivering bananas; boats began also shipping in curious visitors who immediately fell in love with the enchanting surroundings.

Tourism slowed significantly during the 1920s when the town experienced a banana blight, but the fascination with this small town remained strong. The town’s beautiful water falls, secluded coves and some of the country’s best and least crowded beaches remain big draws as well. Exploring the areas on guided tours can be an exciting way to learn more about this hidden oasis.

Guava Trail tours

Avid hikers with a sense of adventure will enjoy a scenic route along the Guava Trails through lush, beautiful Blue Mountains which is full of incredible waterfalls. Experienced guides can also take you bird watching and share information about the area’s flora and fauna. They also share interesting information about how the locals traditionally use native plants in everyday life.

Rio Grade River

This is the most famous two hour river ride in Jamaica. If you love water and adventure, you’ll have the best time of your life riding along the Rio Grande River as expert guides float you in bamboo rafts through the Rio Grande rain forest. Feel free to wear your swim suit so you can take a dip in the water.

Late afternoon is the best time to take this trip down the river. You can enjoy seeing the locals go about their daily tasks like fishing or washing clothes on the rocks. You can also buy souvenirs from vendors along the way.

Nonsuch Caves

Take a three hour tour of one of the area’s most well-known caves called Nonsuch Caves. It’s filled with some of the most interesting rock formations including stalactites and stalagmites. The guided tours follow a lighted path so you won’t miss a thing. The cave is 1,500,000 years old and also contains fascinating Arawak Indian artifacts.

The Jerk Experience

The Jerk Experience Tour is meant to show visitors some of the best of what Port Antonio has to offer. The two to three hour experience starts at the historic home of famous actor Errol Flynn and hear the story of his life in this enchanting little town. Next, you’ll take a trip down 15 miles of Long Bay coastline and beach. Then it’s off to learn all about the infamous Maroon culture jerk cuisine where you’ll even get to sample some of the delicious treats. Next top is to see the Blue Lagoon which was home to the famous author Robert Moore who wrote “The French Connection.” Finally, the experience ends at Frenchman’s Cove, a world renown river, beach and hotel.

Organized tours allow you to safely explore the island and enjoy the adventure of being in a new location.

Finding the right hotels in Port Antonio Jamaica

If you’re looking for hotels located in a more relaxing and secluded area of Jamaica, Port of Antonio is where you want to be. Port Antonio, or “Portie” as this charming town is sometimes affectionately called, has been a popular, isolated retreat for visitors during the 1950’s and 1960s. Today it remains a favorite secret getaway.

The town is an undiscovered Caribbean paradise to those who automatically think of more popular tourist destinations like Ocho Rios, Montego Bay or Kingston as Jamaican destinations. Here you’ll find the best that Jamaica has to offer, including hotels to fit every taste and budget.

Ocean View

If there’s one thing you’ll have no problem finding in the township of Port Antonio it’s hotels with an ocean view. Imagine waking up each morning to the indescribable beauty of a sunrise on the water and then being able to open your door and be greeted by sun, sand and surf. Accommodations right on the beach are what dream vacations are made of.

Some automatically think oceanfront hotels are more expensive. Many times you’ll find that prices are not much more expensive than those located off the beach. Spend some time researching prices before making a purchase to make sure you get the best rate. You’ll often find that hotels owned by those who live here are priced more competitively.

Boutique hotels

One very unique characteristic about this town is that there are no commercial resorts and hotels available. Most of the accommodations are one of a kind. You might find luxury hotels with the same amenities that you would receive in a five-star establishment, a cozy, comfortable and inviting inn or an eclectic guest house to settle in and enjoy your stay. Many of these places make it easier to interact with the locals.

There are benefits to whichever accommodations you choose. One drawback to consider is that some of these properties do not offer the business amenities you may need like WiFi, conference rooms, printers and faxes. Otherwise they are a good way to cut costs when planning a trip.

Luxury accommodations

There are a number of luxury villas available for those with more discriminating taste seeking a place to stay. The most lavish villas on the island offering from two to eight bedroom, private terraces and a full-time, live in staff of eight.

Some of the most magnificent properties are hidden away from open view. Others sit openly on the edge of the beach and coastline.

Finding a place to stay

There are lots of online travel sites that can help you find lodging. You can read through the listings and see what others have to say about their stay. Another option is to find a travel agent that’s familiar with the town. They can give you intimate details about the best places to stay that you won’t get from a web listing.

In order to find the best place, think about your vacation priorities. Are you searching for a quiet place to get away from everything? Do you want to stay somewhere in the middle of everything among the local people so you can really get to know the area? Asking questions like these makes finding the right hotels simple.

Find the right guest house in Port Antonio Jamaica

Reserving a guest house can be the perfect way to stay within your budget while planning your trip to Port Antonio, Jamaica. Some affectionately refer to these cozy rental homes as a bed and breakfast. You get to enjoy all the comforts of home along with the personal attention that’s lacking in most chain hotel establishments.

Port Antonio is home to several of the best guest houses on the island. Knowing where to find them can be challenging; but once you find the right one it will be well worth the effort.

Different guest house styles

Like any other accommodations on the island, one guest house is not necessarily the same as another. Some are very simple and only provide basic spaces to give guests a place to rest their heads each night. There are no frills, just the basics. You are paying for the affordability of the property and nothing else.

You can also find colonial-style homes and lavishly decorated rooms with thick, fluffy mattresses and pillows, the finest linens and spa tubs in a private bath. You might even get a few extra incentives like being invited to take afternoon tea using the finest antique china.

Amenities included

A guest house is furnished and set up to feel just like home. One big appeal for many is when all meals and cleaning are included in the price. This isn’t always the case, however. Make sure to find out which meals your host will be providing. Some properties only provide breakfast and a mid day snack. Others provide their guests with all three meals and tea in the afternoon. Some do not include meals in their list of services.

You should also find out whether you will be sharing a bathroom with other guests. Some accommodations are set up more like a hostel where a certain number of guests all share one bathroom. If you’re planning a honeymoon or other romantic trip, this could pose a problem. Other extras include ceiling fans and air conditioners. Some places will have a pool for you to enjoy while others are located right on the beach. Always confirm the amenities you’ll be getting when you choose a place to stay.

Get the inside scoop

Another benefit to choosing a bed and breakfast is that you get to pick the brain of your host about where to eat and what sights to see. Who better than one of the warm, friendly locals can point you to the sights and activities of the city that can’t be missed? Looking for a free or clothing optional beach? Trying to find an “ital” restaurant, a favorite island tour or the hottest reggae night clubs in the area? Your host probably knows.

A real taste of Jamaica

Your host probably knows where all the best local restaurants are; but if she is preparing any of your meals, you’ll get the chance to experience unique, authentic Jamaican cuisine. Yummy delicacies like fried or boiled plantains, salt fish and ackee, rice and peas, hard dough bread, patties, sorrel and ginger beer will give you a real taste of island life.

You will also get the chance to really mix and mingle with the locals. The people of Port Antonio are very warm and friendly. They love recommend places for you to see and don’t mind giving directions when you need help. The cultural experience, personal attention and the money you save are all wonderful reasons to rent a guest house for your stay in Port Antonio.

Find great food in Port Antonio Jamaica around every corner

Food is an important part of Jamaican culture. In Port Antonio you’ll find some of the best dishes of the Caribbean. Visitors are often surprised to find a lot of variety; there is something to please every palate. Jamaican food has a reputation for being very spicy, but mostly what you’ll find is well-seasoned, tasty recipes that have been handed down through generations.

Common Caribbean food

One of the most popular Caribbean dishes is rice and peas cooked in rich, coconut milk. It is a favorite side dish served daily in the homes of locals and at restaurants throughout the island.

Another favorite island treat you must try is traditional ackee and salt fish. Ackee is a very unusual, local fruit that looks a lot like scrambled eggs. It is combined with dried codfish and tomatoes. This is truly a native island dish favorite you should try while visiting Port Antonio. In the states and other countries salt fish and ackee is prepared using canned ackee; but freshly picked, ripe ackee gives this dish an incredible flavor. It is important that the ackee is ripe because unripe ackee contains a toxin known as hypoglycin which causes vomiting and hypoglycemia.

Of course everyone is familiar with jerk chicken. A special jerk seasoning is rubbed on the chicken which is then cooked on a grill. The chicken is cooked very well done and may taste a bit drier than what you’re used to. Jerk conch and jerk pork are also popular foods in this region.

Vegetables and fruit in abundance

Enjoy a seemingly endless supply of fresh, locally grown produce. You also find that fruits and vegetables are quite inexpensive. Enjoy some of the local bounty during your stay. If you come across an unfamiliar fruit or vegetable, feel free to ask one of the locals about it; especially about which parts can safely be eaten. You’ll find them friendly and happy to help. You’ll find both local and imported fruit for sale by road side vendors throughout town. Most vendors will even wash you fruit if you ask.

“Ital” cuisine

The Rastafarian population follows a strict vegetarian diet only eating “ital” foods. Ital food is a term that comes from the phrase “vital food.” This is clean, natural food that is free of chemicals and additives. Diet is a very important part of the Rastafarian way of life. They do not eat meat or poultry, salt, shell fish or any other fish without scales. Fish can only be eaten if it is less than one foot long. Ital food cannot be cooked in aluminum pots because it is believed that traces of aluminum can end up in your body. The food is traditionally prepared in clay pots.

If you decide to eat at the more upscale restaurants on the island, you won’t find food on the menu labeled as “ital.” Ital food is usually served at smaller, more out of the way establishments.

More than just jerk chicken

There’s a lot more to this local cuisine than the typical jerk and curried chicken dishes most most of us think of when it comes to Jamaican dishes. Treat dining during your stay as another adventure; give food you might not normally try a taste.

Enjoy the crystal clear waters and warm sand just outside your door by day, and then spend your evenings taking moonlight strolls. Sit outside on the veranda and enjoy the smell of the warm ocean breeze. Take your pick: from luxurious suites to cozy, cottage-style accommodations off the beaten path.

Avoiding commercial resorts

The more popular resorts of Jamaica are typically crowded with vacationers. If you’re looking to avoid cookie cutter resort vacations and instead do your own thing, choose mixing with the locals in Port Antonio and check out the villas available for rent. They range from affordable to extravagant. You get your own private space to spend your vacation doing what you want when you want.

Business retreats

Taking employees on a trip to Jamaica might sound too good to be true; but many businesses are planning employee retreats to show employees appreciation and to make an effort to bond and increase company loyalty. Industry conferences also plan events in vacation locales to draw more interest.

Large rentals in the town are ideal for business retreats. Because the area does not attract the same number of tourists as other overpopulated townships, you can successfully reserve the number of villas necessary to accommodate employees. Some can be rented as part of an all-inclusive package if you make arrangements far enough in advance. Ask about discounts that may apply for mass rentals.

There are hundreds of rentals available throughout the island. Port Antonio is less crowded than other locations and offers just as much. There are accommodations to fit every taste and any budget. Whether you are trying to avoid chain hotels and resorts, planning a honeymoon, romantic weekend, family reunion or business retreat, consider reserving private villas instead.

Map of Jamaica

The greenest, most lush part of Jamaica, Port Antonio, the capital of the parish of Portland, gives you an inside look and feel of what true Jamaica is. Located 87 km (60 miles) northeast of Kingston, the island capital, it is nestled in the tropical rainforest region. Not overbuilt like Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril, it offers the charm and warmth you can only get by blending in with the locals.

Port Antonio hotels show the diversity of the region; premium villas on the Blue Lagoon, Goblin Hill Villas at San San, the more moderate Fern Hill, Jamaica Palace Hotel, Frenchman’s Cove Resort, and the more conservatively priced Jamaica Heights Resort, Rio Vista Resort Villas, and many other small hotels in Port Antonio. The first of many hotels in Port Antonio, and the first on the island, was the Titchfield Hotel built in 1905.

Try a guesthouse (it’s like a bed-n-breakfast). When staying in a guesthouse you will have the use of the kitchen in the house, or the barbecue area, to cook your own meals. There are markets close by. Make sure not to miss the fruit market. There are restaurants, bars, and many small shops just a short hop away. Reggae music can be heard everyday. There is plenty to see and do in the town oh so very close to your relaxing guesthouse.

Downtown is where the heartbeat is… the market place with vendors selling everything from home grown food to T-shirts and souvenirs, restaurants, nightlife, and the locals, who will gladly show you around. The local food is something not to miss. You can’t get food anywhere else like this. It also boasts a beautiful marina built in 2006 which hosts the annual Port Antonio International Marlin Tournament. The Jerk Festival is another widely recognized district event, showcasing the legendary way the locals grill chicken and pork. The event attracts over 15,000 people each year.

Numerous white sand beaches populate the coastline, many hosting a variety of accommodations, from windsurfing, snorkeling, boating, fishing and many other water activities. Horseback riding is another popular venture whether along one of the beaches or hillside. Boston Bay, just a short drive from Port Antonio, is the only place on the island where you can surf.

Reach Falls Jamaica

One of the most beautiful spots on the whole island is Reach Falls. Surrounded by rainforest, this pristine river setting has graced the big screen on multiple occasions, but still retains the tranquil ambience that is unique to Reach Falls. There are many levels of cascading water that create turquoise pools that refresh and invigorate.

Port Antonio is also home of the Rio Grande Rafting; floating down the river on a handmade bamboo raft learning the local lore from your trusted raft guide and being surrounded by beauty poets have struggled for years to put to prose.

During the fall of 2010 watch PortAntonio.com develop into a place that more thoroughly describes each and every aspect of this magnificent town and showcases it fabulous people. Come visit Port Antonio soon.
