The first meeting for the Year 2012 was started with full of excitement . The meeting room was filled with warmth and love .

President TM Kay Ku gave a vibrant opening speech.

TOE was TM Indra.

Table Topic master was TM Kaladevi.

TM Dr.Shubassh was one of the Table Topic speaker . The question asked was about food supplement

TM GT Singam was the Table Topic Evaluator.

TM Koh and TM GT enjoyed the fellow ship and their meal

Portdickson toastmaster celebrated christmas on 27th December 2011 with their normal toastmasters meeting. Members attended the meeting with full of christmas spirit. We smelled, felt and saw the aroma of Love and Light in the meeting room.

Our President Kay Ku presented her speech with full of excitement .

We were surprised with the presence of Santa who travel all the way from the North Pole!

Executive committee meeting was held on 6th December 2011 at Presidents house at 8.00pm
Those who attended the meeting were Kay Ku , Tan Soo Guan , Robert Tan, Lee Kah Tor , Donna Kat , Yeoh Lian Geok , Chandran , Kenneth Gong , Indra R , Kala devi , Rosa Phua and Vallie

Delicious food were served to the members . This food give all the members good energy to conduct the meeting smoothly.

Toastmasters Turns 87 !

The first Toastmasters meeting had a modest but noble goal: To help people improve their speaking skills in a supportive, informal atmosphere. As word spread about Ralph Smedley’s experiment in Santa Ana, California, people in nearby communities, and even other states, began requesting permission to start their own Toastmasters clubs.

Toastmasters International recently celebrated its 87th anniversary, confirming that the organization continues to thrive, helping more people than ever develop the communication skills and confidence they need to become leaders in their fields. Membership is at an all-time high, with more than 270,000 members in over 13,000 clubs in 116 countries.

Toastmasters International continues to meet members’ needs through club meetings, district conferences, the Toastmasters website and other events.

Semi-Annual Convention in Melaka

District 51 Semi-annual in Melaka on 21 Oct to 23 Oct was a success and an enjoyable event. The Organisers from Division A had put in their heart and soul into the semi-annual convention. How interesting was the event, is to look at some of the pictures that were taken but most of all is to be physically there to experience it.

21st October morning started off at 10 am with the Executive Meeting involving the Distrcict 51 Officers to Area Governors. This meeting involved with reports from each and every District 51 Officers, their achivements to date and what other plans they have in store to achieve a President Distinguish District 51. At 2 pm was the District 51 Council meeting where it involves all the District 51 Officers and President and VPEs or their proxies from Toastmasters Clubs in Malaysia.

The welcome night with The Theme Baba and Nyonya. 90% of the delegates were all into the theme dresses: Baju Kebaya while the men in their 'sarong'.

22 Oct morning is the opening ceremony with the marching of the flags by the Cadets from Alam and I heard it was a blast. Unfortunately no pictures where taken during the ceremony other than during the intermission: a line up pose with Capt Khalid.

The opening ceremony after the marching of flags are the colourful dancers and I got the best seat of the day, right in front that I could toouch them too.

Semi-Annual convention where the heart of the event is the District 51 Humorous Speech Contest. All the contestants are winners in their own right and all their speeches were indeed humorous! The champian is Stephen Fernando, 1st runner up: Lee Xi Wen and 2nd runner up is Ivan Cheng

What does it take to organise such an event, the above picture say it all, the organising committee and sub committee are getting their certificates of appreciation.

The event come to a close at 1pm on 23 October and the District 51 Annual Convention is set on 27 to 29 April 2012 in Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre. See you there.

World Champion 2010/2011 - Jock Elliott

Australian Wins World Champion of Public Speaking Title

After 36 years and 380 contests, Jock Elliott captures the coveted title.

Persistence paid off for Jock Elliott, who on Saturday, August 20, won the 2011 World Championship of Public Speaking. The resident of Bongaree, Queensland, Australia, has participated in nearly 380 Toastmasters speech contests in his 36 years as a member. This was his sixth time competing in the world championship finals—the most ever for a Toastmaster. For Elliott, the sixth time was a charm.

“Thank you for more than a lifetime of challenge, opportunity and friendship,” he said in accepting the first-place award in front of a capacity audience of nearly 2,000 people from 50 countries.

Elliott won the judges over with a speech that reflected on relationships with family, friends and romantic partners. In his case, the latter referred to his wife, Robyn (also a Toastmaster). Laced with insights and eloquence, Elliott’s presentation, “Just So Lucky,” took a jab at society’s infatuation with social media. He emphasized the need for human connections over online connections, noting that we count on people closest to us to be there in times of trouble.

Appreciate these “ties that bind,” Elliott urged. “If we treasure these ties, nurture these ties, then we’ll have all the luck we’ll ever need—and we won’t need Facebook.”

Second- and third-place winners in the contest—which was held during International Convention at Bally’s hotel in Las Vegas—were Kwong Yue Yang of Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, with his speech “Fortune Cookie,” and Scott Pritchard of Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., with his speech “Roscoe’s Words.” The 2011 Taped Speech Winners (a category for members of undistricted clubs) are: First place, Rozmina Rana; second place, Okoth Okombo; third place, Sonali S. Shah. All three are from Nairobi, Kenya.

A Long Journey

The last round of the World Championship capped a contest that began six months ago with 30,000 participants from 116 countries. The finalists came from places ranging from Hollywood, California, to Berlin, Germany, to Rotorua, New Zealand. As always in this annual event, the performances were outstanding, with speakers touching on a wide range of topics. Olivia Schofield (from Berlin) spoke about overcoming a speech impediment. Phil Barth, of Batavia, Ohio, told of how a roller-coaster ride solved his midlife crisis. Several of the finalists talked about the powerful impact of their mothers.

In his own presentation, Elliott offered several nuggets of playful humor. He said he and his siblings had their differences over the years—like most brothers and sisters—but that hadn’t dimmed their love for each other. “Blood is thicker than water,” said Elliott—“and nobody is thicker than my brother.”

For this Australian speech coach, it was indeed a long road to victory in the World Championship of Public Speaking. But the path he took was part of the ultimate prize, says Elliott, noting that if he had won the title years ago, “I might have been a richer speaker, but not a better speaker.”

Area C6 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest

Area C6 Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest was jointly organized with Area C5 under the leadership of our Area Gov. Rosa Phua and Sarah Abedi. The contest was scheduled to start at 1.30pm. However due to heavy rain many toastmasters were not able to find the Intec UITM location and therefore the contest started a bit late.

The contest began with the Humorous Speech for Area C5 and followed by Area C6. Our members arrived just in time to witness the Area C6 humorous contest.

We adjourned for a short break after the Humorous Speech Contest. The contest started again with Speech Evaluation contest for Area C5 followed by Area C6.

While the chief judge busy counting the ballots the Toastmaster of the Day entertained us with a topic called the garbage day.

The winner for the Humorous contest was Emil Anthony from Mas Cargo. The 1st runner up was Vallie from Port Dickson Toastmasters Club.

Our contestant for Evaluation contest DTM Robert Tan was the 2nd runner up.

The supporters as well as the contestant had a great time during this contest. At the end of the day the thing that matters the most is not about winning a contest but participating and enjoying the whole experience . For those who were not able to attend due to your busy schedule you have missed a fun filling and food filling experience at Intec UITM lecture hall.

It’s the time of the year again, a chance for you (Yes, YOU!) to polish the skills you’ve learned so far in Toastmasters and show them to the world! (or perhaps, just PD Toastmasters and other clubs in the region). What is that time, you may ask?

It’s time for PD Toastmasters’ Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest!

So it will be just like our usual meetings, except, even better! Contesting is open to all members of PD Toastmasters.

If you are not contesting, be a role player for this event as it meets the requirement of Project 6 of your CL Manual, i.e. Help organize a club speech contest. As contests do not frequently occur, this is a great opportunity for you to be one step closer in achieving your CL title!
