Chimacum Valley Farm Tasting Tour

As Front Desk Representatives, we frequently send visitors on the Farm Package Tasting Tour. When guests check-in, they are given a large basket and Farm Bucks vouchers to spend at three local farms and Finnriver Cidery. After meeting with one of The Fireside’s chefs, their selections are whisked away to be transformed into a special, multi-course tasting menu. Last Tuesday, my coworker Lisa and I had the chance to experience the magic for ourselves.

Our first stop was SpringRain Farm and Orchard. A walking tour of this farm is available with advanced notice, but we were happily content with the farm stand. Lemon cucumbers were a fun find and a new experience for Lisa. SpringRain also makes jam, and the plum-rhubarb blend caught our attention.

We couldn’t miss the “Bonkers for Broccoli” sign outside Red Dog Farm. Convenient bags were available, along with fresh green beans, stalks of rhubarb, colorful purple potatoes, strawberries, and bunches of basil. Red Dog Farm also carries Mystery Bay goat cheese, a farmstead chevre with a creamy tangy flavor.

Finnriver Cidery is a unique and inspiring place, with a farm, orchards, special events, and a cozy tasting room. We were expertly guided to the limited release Crew Selection Sidra. With its blend of organic bittersweet cider fruit and organic dessert fruit, the Spanish style Sidra has briny notes, a gentle bubble, and a nutty taste. We also had to pick up a basket of Finnriver’s famous blueberries on our way out.

With our basket overflowing, we returned to the Inn to meet with Chefs Aaron and Chris. Two hours later, Lisa and I came back to a delightful seven-course dinner. Each dish was unique and utilized the full assortment we’d brought back, along with a few of their specialties. Our wonderful server Wendy detailed the ingredients as she brought out each course.

Crab Cake Starter with Lemon Cucumber, Tomatoes, and a Goat Cheese Topper

Warm Purple Potato Salad with Pickled Lemon Cucumber, Green Beans, Red Onion, and Cider-Basil Vinaigrette

Tiger Shrimp in a Creamy Bacon Vinaigrette with Fresh Green Beans

Raspberry Granita

Jidori Chicken with Rhubarb Compote, Oven Roasted Broccoli and a Balsamic Reduction

Spring Greens with Cider Vinaigrette and Currants

Napoleon with Fresh Lemon Curd and Fresh Berries for dessert

The meal was an absolute delight, and we ran out of ways to describe how delicious each dish was! This area abounds with farm fresh produce, meat, and fruit, and The Inn’s Farm Package Tasting Tour is the perfect way to experience the bounty. The chefs’ creativity and expertise, a beautiful setting, and excellent service made this an experience to savor.

August is one of our favorite months in Port Ludlow – summer is in high gear, visitors and locals alike are enjoying the Golf Club, Marina, and the Port Ludlow trails, and blackberries are falling off the vines ready to be eaten on the spot or baked into a special treat.

Another reason we love August is because it is Washington Wine Month.

There are many fantastic Washington wines which makes it so much fun to celebrate what our great state offers in terms of viniculture. The wine list at The Fireside includes many Washington wines, including hyper local wineries like Lullaby Winery and Christina James in Port Townsend and Wind Rose Cellars in Sequim.

Adventures from a Leadership Retreat

Recently we hosted a Leadership Retreat for a company and their experience was flawless. Sarah Hanke was their Sales Manager and this is her recap of the event...

"As seen in the new video of Port Ludlow (see video below), groups have come to The Resort at Port Ludlow to re-live their childhood by working hard and playing harder.

We want to share the tale of our last three days with a group that came to us last December to plan their summer retreat.

Their adventure began downtown Seattle as they boarded one of Kenmore Air's seaplanes. After flying for 15 minutes, they landed right in front of what was to become their home for the next three days. As they flew in for their landing our sales team and their meeting planner took pictures and waited eagerly to see their faces. Once they dis-embarked the plane their faces did not disappoint. Filled with excitement, wonder, and sheer terror, they were amazed at the scenery surrounding them.

This was the first adventure of many to come. After check in and settling into their guest rooms, each with a fireplace and jetted tub, they began the night with a team building pasta cooking class. It was immediately a competition and the team captains picked individual co-workers to join their team in creating homemade pasta. Following the class, the group enjoyed an Italian themed tasting menu, featuring the same type of pasta that was previously made. After dinner, the night ended with much laughter as they again competed in a team game of Cranium in the living room atmosphere of the Marina Room.

The next morning began with a focused meeting in the Andrews Suite. This room features a fireplace, couches and sofa chairs along with conference tables to create a relaxed comfortable atmosphere for groups less than twelve. By early afternoon they were done with their hard work and ready for some fun. Most of them participated in the whale watching experience, while others enjoyed quiet time and spa services. As they were traveling to the boat, many questions and emotions became apparent as some had never been whale watching before. Once they saw the boat and received their boarding passes their faces again turned to excitement. The experience was a once in a lifetime moment where they had whales breaching, spy hopping and hanging out close to the boat. The waters were smooth as glass and the whales did not disappoint. On their journey back to the resort all they could talk about were the pictures that they got and their new favorite whale "Blackberry, J27." The day finished with a relaxing night in the Marina Room with another tasting menu featuring local seafood and produce that the Fireside gets daily.

The next morning, they woke up to a quick meeting and breakfast, followed by a pottery class where they worked together to create an animal or object. After using their imagination to create different things, they detailed a tumbler mug so that it could be a take away to remember their three days of fun, and some work, in Port Ludlow. The ending of this three day adventure could not have been more perfect. We all said good bye as they boarded the seaplane that was painted as an ORCA!

Sailing the Nautilus III

The Nautilus III is now moored in the Port Ludlow Marina and some of the staff had the opportunity to experience an evening on the water with Captain Karen MacDonald - and what a wonderful time it was.

The Nautilus III is a beautiful wooden hull sailboat that was built in 1948. The boat was recently donated to the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend by a woman who could no longer take care of the boat but wanted to ensure that the Nautilus III would be well cared for and enjoyed by many.

Our group boarded the Nautilus III at 5:30pm and sailed off into Ludlow Bay. The beauty of the 67 year old boat, the water, and the views of The Resort and its surroundings evoked a feeling of serenity. The two hour sail was peaceful and relaxing and the time flew by. It was such a beautiful evening we sat outside on the aft of the Nautilus III but inside the boat is equipped with a small kitchen, bathroom, and indoor seating.

Captain Karen has a background in educating people of all ages how to sail and has been sailing professionally for 13 years. Aboard the Nautilus III you have the choice to learn and help the Captain with tasks like raising the sails or you can sit back and enjoy the ride. Our group wanted to learn more about sailing so Captain Karen taught us a few tips and tricks. We enjoyed learning about how wind direction affects the speed of the boat, tacking, and more.

We had a blast exploring the boat and I couldn't help myself from walking to the bow of the boat and snapping a few pictures. It was the perfect summer activity and I am already longing to be back aboard the Nautilus III. We moored in the Port Ludlow Marina at 7:30 and I couldn't believe it had been two hours already.

If you have the chance this summer to sail on the Nautilus III, I couldn't recommend it more. Whether it is for a leisurely cruise or as a team building activity, you will enjoy your time on the boat and on the water.

The six person sailboat is available for charter for a two hour sail on Thursday and Saturday evenings at 5:30 pm in addition to Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm. The Nautilus III can be privately chartered upon request.

A Day Excursion to Lake Crescent

In Port Ludlow we are incredibly lucky to have 26 miles of maintained trails to hike, explore, and make memories on. With trails in both the woodlands and waterfronts varying difficulties and lengths, there’s a trail for everyone.

Two of Port Ludlow’s most popular trails are Ludlow Falls – a ½ mile interpretive, looped trail to a waterfall and Beach Loop Trail – located at the Inn and continuing onto the beach with views of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound.

Many people visit the Port Ludlow and the Olympic Peninsula with the intent to make a trip to Olympic National Park and Forest.

Olympic National Park is a jewel of the peninsula. The park is over 922,651 acres and homes the Hoh Rain Forest, one of the only temperate rainforests in the United States and one of the park's most popular places. Learn more about Olympic National Park here.

One of our favorite spots to visit in Olympic National Park is Lake Crescent. The 10,000 year-old, glacially created lake is a breathtaking place where old growth conifer and maple trees reign over manicured trails and the turquoise hue of the lake is intoxicating. Native American legend describes the lake as being created when an upset mountain spirit angered by the warring Klallam and Quileute tribes hurled a boulder at the warriors killing them all and damming the river, thus forming Lake Crescent.

The drive to Lake Crescent is just shy of an hour and a half from Port Ludlow making a hiking or boating excursion at the lake a great day drip. Rent kayaks at the lake or hike one of the many trails.

The most popular trail at Lake Crescent is the portion of Barnes Creek Trail that leads to Marymere Falls, an old growth forest that leads to a 90 foot waterfall. The 1.5 mile looped trial has two vantage points of the falls. The hike is enjoyable and visually stunning. I couldn't stop myself from snapping pictures of the vast room systems and mossy trees that adorn the trail.

The trail begins at Storm King Ranger Station and continues onto a trail lined with moss and ferns. As you continue down the trail you will cross several bridges and climb a couple sets of stairs with steep stairs to reach the picturesque Marymere Falls. People of all ages hike to Marymere Falls but it is worth noting that if stairs and inclines aren't for you Moments in Time trail might be a better choice.

Lake Crescent is a seemingly magical place encompassed by trees with views of the lake as far as you can see. Whether you choose to hike, boat, or enjoy the views you're guaranteed to treasure your time in the Olympic National Forest.

The Totem Pole Restoration is Complete

This year the Totem Pole at Burner Point at The Resort at Port Ludlow is celebrating its 20th anniversary and a recent restoration has restored the totem pole to its original glory. The restoration was completed in large part to the community of Port Ludlow and the Totem Pole Fund.

The totem pole stands 40 feet high and overlooks Port Ludlow Bay. It was carved by artist David Boxley, a Tsimshian carver from Metlakatla, Alaska, in 1995. The lumber for the totem pole came from a 720-year-old, western red cedar which blew over just south of the Hoh Rain Forest.

Boxley completed the restoration that lasted from May 4th through May 8th. Wood for new wings and a paint job refreshed the 20 year old community icon. Pacific Western Timbers, who originally provided the wood used to carve the totem pole, donated the lumber to replace the old wings.

We would be remiss without giving a big thanks to our wonderful community and those involved with Totem Pole Fund which supported the project to completion - especially Dorothy Kimble, Barbara Adams, Bonnie Lambton, Sally Hirschman, and Claudia Avicola.

Curious about what the different figures on the totem pole represent? The six figures – the eagle, the bear, the two men with locked arms, the lumberman, the beaver, and the six interlocking figures, represent the history of Port Ludlow.

The top figure is an eagle which is reflective of the area before human habitation.

The bear, the second figure, portrays the ancestors of the local S’Klallam tribe.

The two men with locked arms, on the third figure, are Andrew Jackson Pope and Frederic Talbot who owned the sawmill in Port Ludlow that was in operation from 1852 to 1935.

The fourth figure, the lumberman, portrays the era of the Port Ludlow sawmill.

The beaver is representative of the building phase of Pope Resources, now Westharbor Homes.

The base of the totem pole has the six interlocking figures which represents the people and community of Port Ludlow.

To honor the restoration of the Totem Pole a potlatch celebration will be held on July 4th.

Cider and Pizza Sundays at Finnriver Farm

It has been argued that beer and pizza make the perfect combination, but I would have to disagree. It is definitely cider and pizza, to be specific - Finnriver cider and Dented Buoy’s pizza.

One of our favorite weekend traditions has begun again for the season - woodfired pizza and cider Sundays at Finnriver Farm. From 12-6pm every Sunday people gather in the covered pavilion to enjoy live music and the tastes of woodfired pizza and craft hard cider. A fun day at the farm for children and adults alike.

The staff is inviting and knowledgeable. The cider tasting room is open daily where you can learn more and try the many varieties of cider Finnriver crafts, including Habanero, Black Currant and Pear, and Dented Bouy can adjust their pizzas for both gluten-free and vegan diets.

After you eat or while you wait for your pizza you can walk the farm appreciating both the beautiful gardens and animals. After I ordered my pizza, the green leaf topped with local veggies including spinach and garlic scapes and Mt. Townsend cheese, I strolled through the 33-acre, organic farm greeted by the farm dogs along the way. I enjoyed the sounds of chickens clucking and watching the pigs play in the mud. Produce fields were filled with heads of lettuce and I found myself looking forward to “u-pick” blueberry season.

By the time I got back to the pavilion my pizza was ready. I paired it with the tart and refreshing Cranberry Rosehip cider and sat back and enjoyed the sights of the Chimacum Valley. Cider and pizza Sundays at Finnriver last till the beginning of October and I know I will be back many more Sundays before then.

The cider tasting room at the farm is open daily from 12-5pm and Finnriver cider and produce and Dented Buoy’s pizza is sold at the Port Townsend Farmers Market on Saturdays.

Opening Day at the Port Ludlow Marina

Did you make it for the Opening Day at the Port Ludlow Marina?

The atmosphere around the Marina was full of enthusiasm and excitement for the upcoming boating season. The boats were adorned with flags and the sun glistened on the water. Children, adults, and dogs alike were enjoying the great weather - you just can’t beat 73 degree weather in early May.

The ceremony kicked off as bagpipes played and the Port Ludlow Yacht Club members filed in around the Marina Pavilion. “Amazing Grace” played on the bagpipes and between the music and beautiful views of the Olympic Mountains and the Marina, I know I wasn’t the only one with tears in my eyes.

The Port Ludlow Yacht Club recognized members who have crossed the bar and introduced new members and their boats. Each new yacht club member was gifted champagne to christen their boats. After the flags were raised, past and present Commodores and Yacht Club Officers were recognized, and the cannon was fired - it was time to go down to the docks.

Each new yacht club member and their boat were inducted with a champagne toast and champagne was poured on the boats to acknowledge their debut.

The Commodore anchored his boat in the middle of Port Ludlow Bay as boats left their slips and made their way around the Marina to the Commodore. From the Totem Pole at Burner Point to picnic tables at the Marina residents, guests, and fellow boaters enjoyed watching the parade of boats.

The Opening Day ceremony was filled with tradition and excitement for the upcoming boating season, we hope to see you out on the water soon.

The Port Ludlow Yacht Club currently has approximately 150 members who participate in cruise, race, and social functions yearly. In addition to joining the Port Ludlow boating community including social events and access to the Club’s “Wreck Room”, you also receive reciprocal moorage in over 100 yacht clubs in Washington, Oregon, California, and Canada.

From Our Kitchen to Yours: French Onion Soup

Chef Dan's French Onion Soup

Ingredients:

1/8 Cup Olive Oil
1/8 Lbs. Whole Butter
3 Lbs. Yellow Onion
1/2 Quart Veal Stock
1/2 Quart Chicken Stock
1 Satchel of Fresh Thyme or Bay Leaf
1 Tbs. Whole Black Pepper
1/2 Cup Cognac
Salt and Pepper to taste
Thick slices of French or Italian Bread
A standard package of Gruyere Cheese

How to Prepare:

Start by preheating your oven to 200 degrees.
Begin caramelizing the onions in oil and butter on low heat until they appear to be a golden color. This should take approximately 45 minutes.
Then add the satchel of thyme or bay leaf along with whole peppercorns to your caramelized onions. Continue to simmer for up to a 1/2 hour.
Add cognac and stock and continue to simmer for another 1/2 hour.
If desired, salt and pepper to taste.
Serve your French Onion Soup in oven safe bowls.
Top each bowl with a slice of French or Italian bread and plenty of Gruyere cheese.
Broil in the oven for 5 minutes or until the top of the Gruyere cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
Serve immediately and enjoy.

T-37 Sailboat Races in the Port Ludlow Marina Ponds

Curious about the model sailboat races in Port Ludlow Marina Ponds?

They’re T-37 sailboats races put on by the Port Townsend Yacht Club. Racing these radio controlled boats is a fast growing activity on the Olympic Peninsula. The Port Townsend Yacht Club has grown their fleet to over 40 boats in the past three years! T-37 racing is worldwide but has a large concentration in Western Washington.

T-37 racing is inexpensive and great for both experienced racers and people who have never sailed before. Racers come from all over Jefferson and Kitsap counties and Seattle to participate in the T-37 races at the Resort.

Kayaking Ludlow Bay

As the weather changes fun opportunities for leisure and outdoor exercise become available again. On your next free sunny afternoon head over to the Port Ludlow Marina to rent kayaks (or stand-up-paddle boards if you’re feeling adventurous!) and see Port Ludlow from a whole new perspective.

For $15/hour for a single kayak or $25/hour for a double kayak, the friendly and knowledgeable Marina staff will get you outfitted with life-jackets & oars and out on the water you go. First time kayaking? No problem. The staff will show you the ropes.

The sun sparkles on the water and the serene surroundings & sandy shores of Ludlow Bay will relax you immediately. Keep your eyes out for all the wildlife the area has to offer. Watch the blue herons fly past and otters swim nearby – you’ll never want to get off the water! If you’re lucky, you might just see the bay’s resident seal. The seal is friendly and has swam up to kayakers in the past – making for great memories and photos.

As you paddle out, you have stunning views of forest land, historic logging areas, Ludlow Cove Cottages, and of course the Marina and Resort. The perspective from the water will make you appreciate all Port Ludlow has to offer in a whole new way.

Just a short distance out of the Marina lays a beautiful cove behind two islands called “the twins”. Make sure to take the trip and paddle back there. You won’t want to miss it! As a Marketing professional I spend countless hours poring over various social media sites and blog posts trying to find creative ways to reach out to our audience. I’m drawn to social media of all sorts, because…well, it works. There are various platforms with different options that range from fancy and pretty to edgy and informational, all of which can offer tremendous value. However, every once and while I have to step back from the collage of Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, Instagram, Vine, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Tumblr and Pintrest and go with a good old word-of-mouth tactic.

Last week I did just that, something so 1995 – I picked up the telephone to do a little “old school” marketing. I called my neighbor (who we’ll call Kim), who happens to be a very enthusiastic golfer, with A LOT of golfer friends, who love to find good deals. With a quick explanation of our 12^th Man Golf Promotion (which we started running 12 days from the Super Bowl and includes $12 green fees and $12 cart rentals) and a glance at the weekly weather report, she was amped! She was so excited to share the news with her golfing group of 12 gals, on the course later in the day. That was last Tuesday…

Yesterday afternoon, as I was puttering around my yard in the 60 degree weather, Kim popped out of her house all dressed in her golfing gear and smiling ear-to-ear. She had just returned from a SPECTACULAR day at the Port Ludlow Golf Course with some of her friends. She was giddy about the experience and thrilled that she was able to golf such a beautiful course for such a great price. She thanked me for letting her know about it, to which I replied, “Don’t thank me, Kim. Thank your Seattle Seahawks for that one!”

To make it a little sweeter, Kim informed me that a few more groups of her friends were thrilled to be heading out to golf at Port Ludlow over the next couple of days.

It was encouraging to hear that my 2 minute phone call to a friend did what an e-blast that took two hours to put together would do, and maybe more. Just another reminder to us in Marketing to keep it simple, make it personal and don’t be afraid to pick up the phone every once and awhile.

When was the last time you “LINGERED” somewhere? No, I’m not talking about lingering on your couch in your pj’s on a lazy Saturday – but lingered somewhere where you could explore your surroundings and take in new experiences without being rushed. Unplugging in a sense, from all your normal daily routines and agenda’s and plugging in to something new. Right Place, Right Time

Last week, the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission named 19 individuals as recipients for the Carnegie Medal. The medal is given throughout the United States and Canada for those who perform extreme acts of heroism. One of the recipients was an employee of the Resort at Port Ludlow, James (Jim) Kocker of Poulsbo, Washington.

The actions for which Jim is being honored took place on October 12, 2013 in Ellensburg, Washington. Jim was a motorist that witnessed Anthony S. Johnson’s four-door sedan go down an embankment after he suffered a medical issue. The vehicle entered a pond where it began to submerge in six-foot-deep murky water, roughly 50 feet from the bank. Kocker swam to the vehicle, but was unable to open the doors, the driver was unconscious. Therefore, Kocker returned to shore, grabbed tool, and met up with a state trooper who had responded to the scene. The two returned to the sinking vehicle and broke out the rear-window. The vehicle quickly sank to its roof. Kocker went to the driver side door, opened it and freed Johnson of his safety belt. With the help of the trooper, Kocker swam the victim to shore. Although, Johnson required hospitalization, he survived the accident and made a recovery.

Acts of bravery and selflessness are performed everyday - they are what give us hope for the future and perspective about the present. Often the acts go unnoticed to the masses, but they are no less important or impactful than the ones which are justifiably rewarded

Christmas on the Water

Have you done the Christmas Ship, yet?

The Holidays are here and whether you are in full Holiday swagger and skipping to work signing Deck the Halls, or if your …well…just not there yet – the Christmas Ship cruise is a great activity to enjoy. I took my family on last Wednesday's cruise from Poulsbo. We sailed the surrounding waterways which were lined with festively decorated homes and enthusiastic carolers. I must admit – it was a Wednesday night in what felt like a week that had lasted forever; the weather was downright terrible; my two young daughters were a bit sleepy and my other-half had just completed a 2.5 hour commute home. Nevertheless, we quickly changed into dresses and a nice sweater (not necessary by any means, but suggested attire by my eight-year old) and headed for the dock.

The ship was beautifully lined with Christmas lights and garland and you could hear the holiday music hum as you walked towards it. Once aboard, we were greeted by a few "elves", a warm boat, an unassuming caroler choir, and Christmas sweaters aplenty. Then it started to happen...we all started to feel just a bit jollier. As the fear of being stuck on a boat for 2 hours with constant festiveness started to leave my being, we settled onto one of the comfortable benches which lined the vessel. We all sat, talked and laughed about being there and it wasn't long before my girls were off looking at the gift shop for some sort of holiday fun item. It was amazing how the holiday mood just started to sink in – and no, it wasn't due to the glass of wine that I was enjoying - but it was due to my surroundings. Santa was there talking with the kids, young ones were dancing, and people were merry – everyone was happy. Not a typical sight with all the hustle that often surrounds the holidays.

So, whether I'm ready for it or not, the Holidays are here and this was two hours that was given to me to celebrate and enjoy them. Every year we do holiday things – gingerbread houses, cookies, looking at lights, shopping, and singing– but this 2 hour cruise felt like one of the best holiday things I've done in a very long time. It left me feeling full and grateful.

Upon departing, with a new Christmas ornament in hand and two giggling girls, I was so happy. Since then, I've settled in for the Holiday Season for what it is…a time to be with those you love and be thankful for the small things that bring us so much joy.

French Toast - The Perfect Winter Breakfast

It's Sunday morning and you stir awake around the weekly alarm time, then doze back off with thoughts of spending the day in comfy clothes, doing whatever it is that makes you happy. Whether it's watching football, attending church service, playing with your little ones, meal planning for the week, visiting with friends, or reading a book, it's all done at your own pace - That's a perfect Sunday.

For us foodies, these kind of days scream for GREAT FOOD! A freshly brewed cup of coffee enjoyed in a favorite mug as opposed to a travel mug on the go feels like a gift. Pair it with a delightful and slightly fancy breakfast...now Sunday is off to an amazing start. Enjoy your weekend!

Fireside French Toast

Chef Dan

2 slices Challah bread

Egg batter

1 each Banana

2 each Strawberry 1/4

2 Tbls Brown sugar

3 Tbls Brandy

2 Tbls Butter

2 oz. Cream

Powdered sugar

1 oz. Toasted Oregon Hazelnuts

1 oz. Crème Fraîche

Dip challah bread into egg batter and sauté in a pre-warmed pan.

Add Butter and brown sugar in a sauté pan over medium high heat until brown sugar is dissolved.

Add sliced banana and strawberries, flame with brandy, add cream and reduce until caramel in color.

Slice finished French toast diagonally, top with caramelized banana and strawberries, crème fraîche, toasted hazelnuts, and powdered sugar.
