Savvy eReader fanatics noticed that the Kindle 2 was listed as unavailable on Amazon’s site earlier today, leading many to surmise that a new Kindle was on the way. Not surprising since a new DX just landed with an improved screen and new features. Amazon didn’t keep us waiting for long — today they announced not only the new Kindle with 3G but also Kindle Wi-Fi, a less expensive sibling.

This is also not a complete surprise as Barnes & Noble did the same thing just a few weeks ago. and like the Nook with Wi-Fi, the Kindle Wi-Fi is the same as the 3G version in every way except for connectivity. It’s also just $139, $10 cheaper than the Nook. It’s on.

Just as with the new DX, both updated Kindles come in graphite, though consumers can still opt for white. Amazon trimmed the already svelte Kindle even more, making the device’s width 21 percent smaller. This resulted in what seems like much smaller page turning buttons (that are supposed to be quieter) and some shifting around of the Home and Menu buttons and a redesign of the joystick. the screen remains the same size — 6 inches — and the bookseller claims that not only does it have 50 percent more contrast, but is “optimized with Amazon’s proprietary waveform and font technology to make pages turn faster and fonts sharper.”

Additionally, both Kindles now have double the internal storage (up to 3,500 books) and a whopping one month of battery life. Amazon has improved the PDF reader, which now allows notes, highlights, and dictionary lookup, plus support for password-protected files. Text-to-speech is still hanging on, but now also has the ability to read menus, the Home screen, and item descriptions. I’m wondering if this will allow customers with vision impairments to use the device — I suppose it depends on how well it works.

The Kindle 3G continues to have global wireless coverage and now also includes Wi-Fi. Again, just like the Nook. Users who opt for Kindle Wi-Fi can access any AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot across the U.S. to shop and download Kindle content without needing a password. This probably doesn’t cover surfing with the Kindle’s new webkit browser, but at least you’ll be able to get your eBook fix conveniently even without 3G.

I’m also excited about the new cover for the Kindle, which includes a light for reading in the dark.

Nintendo Wii: the Whole New World of Real Time Gaming

The Swiftpoint Mouse puts a novel tilt on the laptop mouse concept with its new and ridiculously small portable mouse. It’s is tiny, about the size of a golf ball and has grooves for 3 fingers. The mouse is wireless and extremely energy efficient and is able to run for 4 weeks off of a full charge. The Swiftpoint mouse comes with an almost nano sized wireless dongle that also doubles as a charging base for the tiny mouse. A 30 second charge will charge the mouse for a full hour of use.

Tilting the mouse is how you get it to scroll, no clumsy scroll wheels. The SwiftPoint is actually small enough to remain in your hand while you are typing. If you are late comer to the laptop sensation, this might help ease you past the troubles learning to use a multi/touchpad. Toy story 3: the Video Game

Load up Toy story 3 and within moments you’re barrelling on horseback through a hazardous canyon, dodging bright red projectiles fired by a pig in a pink spaceship. It’s big and colourful fun that’s hard to dislike.

Sadly, it’s not long before the cartoony action is undermined by frustrating level design and dodgy controls. Jumping over large gaps or firing at enemies is impossible to judge accurately with the fixed camera angle offered. finish the stage through a combination of persistence and luck and the only satisfaction you’ll feel is that you’ll never have to play through it again.

Thankfully this section is only a small part of a varied and commendably ambitious experience. a great deal of effort has been made to make it match up to the quality of its big-screen relation – with mixed results.

Befitting the franchise’s first seventh-generation release, you can’t help but be struck on first impressions by how close the characters are to those you’ve seen on the big screen, both cosmetically and in their voices and movements. It really feels like you’re entering the Toy story world – the use of licence here is exemplary.

Toy story 3: Buzz hovers above a wild west town

Much critical attention has deservedly been paid to the game’s open-world, Red Dead Redemption-like Toy Box mode. It’s effectively Red Dead Junior, as your selected character wanders around an old West-style toytown, helping out locals and unlocking new items and missions. This is a real departure from your standard licensed fare, and developers Avalanche deserve plaudits for trying something different.

It’s probably here where most of the game’s longevity lies, but, while it may be ambitious, it’s a poor relation to the games it’s trying to imitate. Missions invariably involve searching for things – with no map offered, infuriatingly – or simple repetitive tasks.

Meanwhile, as you progress through the story mode elements of the game, the control and camera problems persist – fundamentals for what is, for the most part, a 3D platformer. Regular checkpoints means you’ll advance quickly, but not without dozens of deaths you’ll blame on the programmer’s shortcomings rather than your own.

Toy story 3: Buzz battles Zurg

Variety above all else is the focus here: there’s a stealth section, flying sections, racing sections – but nothing rises above the level of mediocre pastiche. It flits nicely between set pieces from the film and character-specific stages (such as Buzz Lightyear battling Zurg), and the amount of collectable items and unlockable content means there is a surprising amount of depth – but only for those who can overlook the game’s flaws.

Toy story 3 is not without its charm and enjoyable moments, however, especially in multiplayer. Split-screen co-op is available throughout, and playing with a friend does make the aforementioned problems somewhat easier to swallow. It’s aimed unapologetically at kids and fans of the series – so it’s hard to criticise too harshly when it fails to match the Marios and Grand Theft Autos of this world.

Still, you can’t help but feel frustrated with a game that has so many good ideas, but executes most of them so poorly. With a bit more thought it could have been much, much better.

Toy Story 3 for PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, Xbox, Sony PSP, PC and Nintendo Wii

In contrast to Flip Slide HD, Samsung already has a pretty impressive portfolio of Flip-type pocket camcorders with the introduction of HMX-U20 and HMX-U15 during early this year. It now adds another member, HMX-E10, to the mix. The E10 is all about self-recording in that the most prominent feature is the swiveling spherical lens. You can easily turn the lens around to do self-recording. Samsung obviously takes a page from Sony Bloggie HD.

The Samsung HMX-E10 aside from its 270-degree rotating lens offers a 2.7″ 230k-pixel touch-screen, relatively large for the camcorder size. The LCD is spilt into an electronic live view and touch controls which include record stop and play. The 1080p camcorder itself is however a downgrade, from the U20’s 3x optical zoom to 2x digital. It also records to microSD and outputs via HDMI, unlike SD/SDHC and component video output found on U20. The Flip-arm USB arm handles as usual the battery charging and video sync. Interestingly, the U20 and E10 are set at the same MSRP ($199) so you could say the trade-off is in the lens.
