RAW TALENT: Juan Carlos, On the Beach

I'm always happy to feature the work of non-professional models and photographers who have the potential and interest to move forward creatively. So I was pleased when Juan Carlos, a 27-year-old man from Panama City, Panama, contacted me to share these images with the readers of portfolioLATINO.com. Taken in Playa El Palmar, a Pacific coast beach about an hour and a half from Panama City, these shots showcase the crystal clear water as well as the creative vision of the model, who posed in some rather wet underwear for this shoot.

Juan Carlos's inspiration, he said came from a past experience: "I went to a modeling competition, and when I was there I felt frustrated because during the photo sessions, they said I didn't 'say anything.' My inspiration was to see if by taking photos, my cousin could find some moments when I was 'saying something.' I wanted to be capable of saying something."

It appears he achieved his goal!

You mentioned that you are both Aztec and Maya. The modeling industry often focuses on models with very European looks. How do you feel about that?
One of my goals has always been to not discriminate against any race. I consider that my native people are one of the best races. We had bodies just as beautiful as the Europeans. I’ve never liked racism. We all deserve to be recognized because of our roots and race. The world is evolving, and very soon another race will take charge. If we want to continue progressing, we have to adapt to change.

Mencionaste que eres Azteca y Maya. Muchas veces aquí en las américas (incluso México, estados unidos, etc.) la industria de modelaje se enfoca demasiado en modelos de herencia europeo y rasgos muy europeos. ¿Qué opinas de eso?
Una de mis metas siempre ha sido no descriminar contra ninguna raza. Yo considero que mi gente nativa era una de las mejores razas. Teniamos cuerpos muy hermosos tal como los modelos Europeos. El racismo nunca me ha gustado. No me gusta apuntar a nadien. todo merecemos ser reconosidos por nuestras herencias y raises. El mundo esta evolucionando, claro que si y muy pronto otra raza tomara el mando. Si queremos seguir avanzando tenemos que adaptarnos a los cambios.

You state in your profile that one of your goals is to promote health and exercise in the Latino and Mexican communities. How did you decide to focus on this?
I love promoting good things in the world. Today, television and other media mostly just offer clowns. I’m not saying that clowns aren’t good, just that there are so many that the youth is spending more and more time looking at them. If it’s not clowns, it’s ostentatious women. Which is how our youth learn about sex and mediocrity.
One thing that motivates me is my theory that there are levels that man has not yet been able to reach. I want people to prepare and learn for the future that awaits us.
Lately I have a lot of people who in just six months have lost weight. Others tell me they are faster on the track field. I have people who had back pain and now they don’t. The truth is that my theory about exercise has been a miracle for many people, as they describe it on Youtube.

Escribes en tu perfil que una meta tuya es promover la salud y ejercicio dentro de la comunidad latina y mexicana. ¿Cómo decidiste iniciar eso?
Si, me encanta promover las cosas buenas en el mundo. Hoy en dia la mayoria de la television y vias de comunicacion solo ofrecen payasos. No digo que los payasos no son buenos solo que hay tantos que la juventud cada dia se trastorna mas mirando esos payasos. Si no son payasos son mujeres chinacas. Que es lo que nuestra juventud aprende sexo y mediocridad.
Algo que me motiva hacer lo que hago es mi teoria de que hay niveles que el hombre no ha podido todavia llegar. Yo quiero que la gente se prepare y aprenda para el futuro que nos espera.
Ultimamente tengo mucha gente en solo seis meses ya han bajado de peso. Otros me dicen que ya tienen mas velocidad en su carrera de track field. Tengo gente que tenia dolores en la espalda y ahora ya no lo tienen. La verdad es que mi teoria de ejercicio es un milagro para mucho como lo describen en Youtube.

You also post Spanish-language classes on your channel. How did you decide to start that?
The Spanish-language classes were ideas from a teacher who cares about me as if I were his son. He had they idea, and I thought it sounded good.

También pones videos como clases de español en tu canal. ¿Cómo decidiste empezar eso, y cómo ha sido la reacción?
Los videos de Español son ideas de un maestro que me quiere como su hijo. El tuvo la idea y a mi me parece bien.

What is your regular exercise routine?
To stay in shape is very easy for me, yet very difficult at the same time. I exercise every day except Saturday, which is my day of rest. I am a true runner. I train 70 miles or 120 miles a week. Domingo is my longest training day; sometimes I run 25 or 30 miles then. And that’s not counting my routine for abs and stretching.

¿Cómo es tu rutina de ejercicios?
Para mantenerme en forma es muy facil para mi pero muy dificil a la vez. Yo entre todo los dias con execion de el Sabado que es mi dia de descanzo. Soy un corredor de fondo. Entreno de 70 millas a 120 millas por semana. El domingo es mi dias de entrenamiento mas largo a veces ago 25 a 30 millas en ese dia. Mas no cuento mi rutina de abdominales y extrechamientos especificos para mi bien estar saludable.

¿What about your diet regimen?
My diet is very balanced. I follow a diet that the Seventh Day Adventists taught me: eat more vegetables, fruits, soy grains, whole wheat bread and greens. The only meat I eat from time to time is beef and a little chicken. All other meats have a bad effect on me, which I’m grateful for, because if not I would have regretted it already.

¿Cómo es tu dieta?
La Verdad mi dieta es muy balanceada. Yo hago una dieta que me enseñaron los adventistas de septimo dia. Comer mas vegetales frutas, soya, granos, pastas integrales, y verduras. La unica carne que como de vez en cuando es el bistec de res y un poco de pollo. Todas las demas carnes me hacen mal lo cual estoy muy agradecido que me hagan mal sino ya hubiera arrepentido.

What part of your body do you think is your best feature?
The parts I like best are my abdomen, legs and — most importantly — my lungs, because thanks to them I can withstand a lot.

¿Cuál crees que es el mejor parte de tu cuerpo?
La parte que mas me gusta es mi abdomen, piernas y los mas inportante mis pulmones ya que gracias a ellos tengo mucho aguante.

You’re a very multifaceted man. What are your ultimate goals?
I know that words are worthless without action, but there is no action if there aren’t words — which is why I will tell you what I dream about and consider a possibility. My goal has always been to influence the entire world. One of the ways to do this is through the Olympics. I love to run and I have hopes that I will achieve this with my career as a runner. Then I want to train people like the Tarahumara Indians and take them to the Olympics so that Latino people in ten years can dominate the sport of running. Also, with the fame of being a trainer I want to start health centers and gyms.
In terms of modeling, I would like to make people around the world aware that we are all beautiful; it doesn’t matter what color or race you belong to. With modeling, what I will achieve is give more confidence to a world that considers itself inferior.

Eres un hombre muy polifacético. ¿Cuáles son tus metas y sueños? Mira se que las palabras no valen sin acion pero no hay accion si no hay palabras por lo tanto dire lo que sueño y considero una posibilidad. Mi meta es y siempre ha sido influir en el mundo entero. Una de las formas para logra eso es por medio de los Olímpicos. Me encanta correr y tengo la esperanza de que lograre algo con mi carrera de corredor. Despues quiero entrenar gente como los tarahumaras y llevarlos a los olimpicos para que la gente latina en diez años sea la que domine el deporte de carreras. Tambien con la fama de entrenador quiero poner muchos centros de de salud y gym para toda la gente.
Con lo de el modelaje quiero despertar la mente del mundo entero de que todos somos hermosos no importa que color y que raza vengas. Con el modelaje lo que lograre es darle mas seguridad a un mundo que se concidera inferior.

I've worked with so many talented models over the years that it is a rewarding experience to look back on my portfolios. Among the most creative shoots are two or three I did with Fabio, a Dominican model based in New York City. He was about nineteen years old at the time of these very creative shots, which highlight his youthful face, tall and fashion-forward physique and fierce creativity. He is one of those models who knows how to combine fashion, sex appeal and acting ability with great success.

Canadian photographer Kevin Slack appreciates the visual beauty of Cuba. And that extends to his appreciation of the male form, as he has spent years creating beautiful portraits of Cuban men. In this exclusive interview with portfolioLATINO.com, he shares some personal thoughts about his work and inspiration. (Considering that there hasn't been much in book form dedicated solely to Cuban male models since 1998's Somos Cubanos, don't you think it's about time Mr. Slack gets a book deal?)

You’ve been visiting Cuba since 2000, and have photographed a lot there. How has your work and artistic eye evolved?

The biggest differences are peripheral, I think. In the beginning, I was a tourist who would occasionally try to take a few beautiful photos, mostly because I was overwhelmed with the space and the people, in particular of course, the men. Now when I go, it's to spend time with my friends, yes, and to take home as many satisfying images as I can. And with the evolution of motivation is the evolution of logistics. After so many visits to Cuba, I have quite a lot of friends and models and contacts that help me get closer to finding the images I am looking for.
And maybe then there is an evolution of perspective too. I am still an outsider. But my heart and my soul yearn for Cuba. I feel more at home there most of the time than I do in Canada. I hear my Cuban friends scoffing at that, a little. It's easier to love Cuba when you don't have to live there. In the end, I don't think my aesthetic — wherever it is beauty comes from — hasn't changed that much. Just perspective and opportunity has changed. That, and I'm a lot harder on myself what makes a good image.

With gradual change coming to Cuba, how will this affect your artistic motivation and the creative approach of your Cuban models?

It's more and more difficult for me to predict the nature of change that will come to Cuba. What I mean is, I would have thought it would have come already. But it has not come. Cuba lives on the apex of change and disaster. And really, right now, Cuba needs more than gradual change. It needs solid and sudden change. I'm not terribly politically-minded, but I can still see the suffering and I can still see the desperation. Paradoxically, I'm not sure the Cuba I love will survive sudden and sweeping change. This is the same paradox that prevents Cuba from correction; what I mean is all the old men who could make change in Cuba are too afraid of what will happen to Cuba to make any change of any significant impact. It already affects my motivation. I feel like the work that I do has an expiration date. I feel urgent. And for my friends I hope that change, like a calculated avalanche, will be swift and sudden, and most of all helpful.

How do you find models in Cuba? What do you look for in a male model?

First, the kind of man I love to photograph is everywhere. Just walk down to the street. Young, muscular, sun-burnished, and fierce. And some of my favorite models, I have found this way, walking down the street. In which case, I stop them, and introduce myself in barely sufficient Spanish and tell them I am a photographer and show them samples of my work and ask them if they are interested. And so far, after ten years, nobody has been obviously offended or angry.
Now that I think of it, I found all six of the twins in the street. Others are friends of friends. Friends and models who know the work I do will bring a friend or three to my private house in Havana for impromptu auditions and interviews. Sure, I respond to masculinity and sexuality and eroticism. But after that, the thing that I look for most in a model is enthusiasm and trust. A model needs to trust me. And I need to know that they are interested in doing it, not just for the money and not just to have a beautiful image of themselves, but for the experience of doing it.

Your models exude a combination of masculinity, sexuality and eroticism that not every male model has the ability to convey. How difficult is it to find models that fit the bill both in terms of their physical looks and their ability to portray these qualities?

Some are better than others, of course. But I'm not often wrong with my instincts who will make a good model. And models are usually well prepared for what I'm looking for. Once in a while, I will find a potential model who, physically, is exactly what I'm looking for. Or who has something special that intrigues me. And I will spend the extra effort building that relationship and trust; and when it works, it is very satisfying. But, really that vivid and fluid sexuality, and that vulnerability that I love in so many of my models, is raw material. It's all there already; I don't have to manufacture it. I just have to mold it.

How does your work with male models in Cuba differ from your work with male models in other destinations?

My passion is Cuba and Cuban men. And there's something about the whole process, the whole experience of my Cuban work that gets me and keeps me going. The heat, the sea air, the boys, the music, the space, the light, is all an inspiration. And I wake up inspired. And I dream inspired. My work in Cuba is a miraculous sprint every time. Only two of my models in Cuba have gone on to pursue modeling. It's not a big industry in Cuba, where they have almost no consumer culture and no advertising to speak of. But, at best, I am in Cuba for one month in a year.
The only other place where I have worked is at home in Toronto. It's a completely different experience. I have had the privilege of working with a few great models locally. But, quite reasonably, male models in Toronto have their own expectations and their own agenda and the whole experience become more like a negotiation. It’s a dialogue to satisfy two needs rather than a dialogue to satisfy one, or at least that’s the way it seems. And — for whatever reason — the trust I love with my Cuban models is so much more warily given and so much more tentative, and the vulnerability, so much more guarded and protected when I work with local models.

Do you have any Cuba-specific projects that you’re currently working on?

If all goes well, I'm hoping to get back to Cuba the end of March. I was there in November and, while I had some successes — and I'm working through quite a large catalogue of new work — I also had a number of challenges. It rained for over a week for one thing, thanks to a tropical storm. And since I got home I have been overwhelmed with the desire to get back and fix everything that didn't go quite right. I already have a very long shot list planned. Meanwhile, I continue to add new work to the public area of www.snappedshots.com. I am also going to be updating the Members area — www.snappedshots.com/join.php — with some of my more erotic work in the coming weeks. Almost all of the images on my website — in the public and private areas — are available for sale as prints. And I'm hoping that 2011 is the year where I will finally snag a book contract. When I get information about that, of course I will post it on the website.

How did you decide to start your video channel and blog?

In the case of Youtube, it was in order to be able to show a little about how it’s possible to change your body by changing your way of thinking, what you eat and focusing on what you want, and that you can achieve this with the help of someone who has gone through the same process, but without having to go to the gym.

¿Cómo decidiste iniciar tu presencia en línea?
En el caso de Youtube para poder enseñar un poco cómo es posible cambiar tu cuerpo cambiando un poco tu forma de pensar, tu alimentación y enfocándote en lo que quieres y que esto lo puedes lograr con la ayuda de alguien que halla pasado por ese proceso pero sin necesidad de ir al gym.

What are your professional goals?
As a professional, I would like to be a personal trainer or international fitness expert and show people how you can define your body by doing exercises at home, and not only showing them how to have an equilibrium between body, mind and spirit, but also looking good and having a well-defined body.

¿Cuáles son tus metas como profesional?
Como profesional me gustaría llegar hacer un entrenador personal o entrenador experto a nivel internacional y enseñarles a las personas como puedes lograr definir tu cuerpo haciendo ejercicios en casa y no solo eso enseñándoles a tener equilibrio entre cuerpo, mente y espíritu, pero viéndote bien y estando definido.

In one of the postings on your blog, you published drawings of muscular bodies. What is the connection between drawings and real-life objectives?
It’s simple: When you make a drawing, you know what you want and how you’re going to do it. You see the details. That’s how it is with the construction of a body and your goals. You do some things or take some actions that will allow you to achieve your goals and results, that is, you yourself are constructing it, and you do it in the way that you want, with diet and exercise.

En un articulo que escribiste en tu blog, pusiste unos dibujos. ¿Podrías explicar un poco sobre la conección entre dibujos del cuerpo y metas en la vida real?
Si es sencillo cuando tu haces un dibujo, sabes que es lo que quieres o como lo vas hacer, ves los detalles asi es con la construcción del cuerpo y las metas, haces aquellas cosas o acciones que te llevaran a lograr esa meta o resultado, es decir tu mismo lo vas creando y los vas haciendo a la manera que quieres como el cuerpo y la alimentación y ejercicios.

What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting out with their fitness regimen?
In terms of the mind, I would make a list of what you think of your own body, and that you write all the negatives, then the positives, ending with the thoughts that will help you to develop the body that you need. Next, look for a photo that shows how you’d like your body to look. And begin a simple exercise program, especially if you’ve never done exercises or you haven’t done them in a while.
Stop eating refined flour, like breads and things like that. Drink water in the morning and throughout the day; a minimum of eight glasses. Drink green tea, and eat a lot of protein. And don’t drink many bottled soft drinks; go for something more natural.

¿Cuáles son las recomendaciones más importantes que compartirías con alguien que está apenas empezando a cuidarse físicamente?
En el aspecto de la mente que hiciera una lista de lo que cree de su propio cuerpo y que escriba todo lo negativo, después lo positivo y que se quede con aquellas creencias que le ayudaran a desarrollar el cuerpo que necesita, después que consiguiera una foto de cómo desea tener su cuerpo o verse. Y comenzar con un programa de ejercicios sencillo, más que nada si nunca hace ejercicios o no los hace desde hace tiempo.
Primero que deje de comer harinas refinadas como panes y esas cosas, que tome agua por las mañanas y durante todo el día mínimo como 8 vasos durante el dia, que tomara te verde, y que comiera muchas proteínas. Y que no tomara tantos refrescos embotelladas y que prefiera más lo natural.

Nude "Passion of the Christ" Calendar Incites Rage from Bishop of Mallorca

A Catholic youth group has caught flack for posing nude in a fundraising calendar in Spain.

It's nothing out of the ordinary for a church group to raise funds. But when a Catholic youth group in Mallorca, Spain decided to do so by posing nude in a calendar, it caused quite a stir.
The 2011 calendar, organized by the Davallament youth group from the town of Sant Joan, features nude and semi-nude young men in a variety of poses, including scenes with the cross and the last supper.
The bishop of Mallorca has sharply criticized the project. But what do you think about the use of the natural human body to depict important cultural scenes?

No es nada fuera de lo común que un grupo religioso hace algo para recaudar fondos. Pero cuando un grupo de católicos jovenes en Mallorca, España, posó desnudo en un calendario con esta meta en mente, ha atraído muchísima atención. El calendario, que salió para el año 2011, fue organizado por la asociación de Davallament de San Joan, y incluye imagenes con hombres jovenes desnudos y semidesnudos, reproduciendo escenas vinculadas a la semana santa.

Born in a town called Huixtla, in the Mexican state of Chiapas, Luís Mazariegos is a 24-year-old fitness expert, actor and university student based now in Mexico City. His muscular, well-defined frame and amazing abs are proof of his fitness know-how. But what may surprise some is that his rippling abs and well-formed, tight muscles are the result of a fitness program that began only about a year ago.

How old were you when you started exercising, and when did you begin your current regimen?
I began about a year ago. I did exercises before, but without a regimen and I didn’t pay attention to my diet. What inspired me was the Olympics — I would see the people who participated and saw that they had very defined bodies, and I imagined myself trying out. When I lived in [the city of] Torreón I had friends who had defined bodies, and I began to wonder what they do to be like that, and how I could do it too.

A que edad empezaste a hacer ejercicios e iniciar un regimen? Que te inspiró a iniciar eso?
Comencé desde hace como un año, antes hacía ejercicios pero no llevaba un régimen o por decirlo no cuidaba de mi alimentación. Lo que me inspiro a esto fue que siempre que eran las olimpiadas veía a los que participaban y veía que tenían cuerpos muy bien definidos y me imaginaba siendo un concursante en las pruebas, de allí cuando viví en Torreón tuve amigos que tenían físicos muy definidos e igual me comencé a preguntar que hacen ellos para estar asi, como puedo hacerlo yo.

How has your body — and your way of thinking — evolved since you began your current regimen?
Very well. At first, like anything, your body has some reactions — like the stomach. You need to learn to control hunger and know what to eat and what not to eat. But in those moments I do it out of love for myself, more than for the physical aspect. In my way of thinking, I noticed that my thoughts influence my body, so I began to be more positive in things related to my body and thinking that yes, I could achieve my goals and believe and bring them to fruition in the right way in terms of exercise.

Como ha evolucionado tu cuerpo y tu forma de pensar desde que empezaste a hacer ejercicios y alimentarte bien?
Muy bien, como todo al principio tu cuerpo tiene algunas reacciones como el estómago, que tienes que aprender a controlar el hambre y saber que comer y que no, pero en estos momentos lo hago realmente por amor a mí, más que por el físico. En mi forma de pensar me di cuenta que mis pensamientos influían en mi cuerpo, así que comencé a ser más positivo en cosas referentes al cuerpo y pensar que si podía lograrlo y creer y llevar acabo de forma correcta los ejercicios.

How long have you been an actor, and what type of acting do you do? What else are you involved with?
I’ve been an actor for approximately one year, and I do it on an Internet series called “Los Chicos del Cole.” It’s a kind of drama. And I currently also study tourism in a university here in Mexico City.

Cuanto tiempo llevas como actor y que tipo de actuación haces? Tienes otras carreras también?
Llevo aproximadamente un año y la actuación que hago es por medio de una serie que sale por el internet se llama Los Chicos del Cole, es un tipo de drama, y si actualmente estudio Turismo en una universidad aquí en el DF.

Does being an actor help you to be a fitness trainer, and vice versa?
That could be, but I don’t think so. It would help in terms of knowing yourself, but being a good trainer should be influenced more by helping people to achieve their goals, and I think that it’s more about concentrating in what you like. If being an actor ends up helping with that, you should take advantage of that too.

Crees que ser actor te ayuda ser entrenador, y ser entrenador en muy buena forma te ayuda a ser fisicoculturista?
Podría ser, pero no lo creo, te ayudaría en el aspecto de darte a conocer, pero el ser un buen entrenador debería influir mas el deseo de ayudar a las personas a lograr cumplir sus metas, y creo que es mas de concentrarte en lo que te guste, y si el ser actor después te ayuda en ello, debes aprovechar un poco de eso.

What have been the greatest challenges in your exercise program, and how did you overcome them?
The greatest challenge is being able to explain to people that you don’t need to go to the gym or spend hours exercising; that it’s just a matter of investing in short sessions during the day. I’ve overcome that by giving results to people and explaining to them how it’s helped me, and more than anything giving them results too, and more than anything giving them results through simple diet.

Cuáles han sido tus desafíos más grandes en tu programa de ejercicios, y como los superaste?
Creo que el desafío más grande es poder explicarle a la gente que no necesitas ir al Gym o pasarte horas haciendo ejercicios; que solo es cuestión de invertir sesiones cortas durante el dia para poder lograrlo. Los he superado dando resultados a las personas y explicándoles como esto ayudo en mí, y más que nada dándosles resultados, todo aunado a un estilo de comida sencilla.

What part of your body are you the most proud of?
The part that gives me the most pride is my abdomen, because many people think that it’s the hardest part to make defined, but in reality it’s not, when you focus your thoughts and do the necessary exercises.

Que parte de tu cuerpo te da más orgullo, y por qué?
La parte que más me da orgullo es mi abdomen, porque creo que muchos piensan que es la parte más difícil de definir, pero en realidad no lo es, cuando enfocas tus pensamientos y haces los ejercicios necesarios.

Add to my ever-growing list of soccer-players-turned-models the Spanish star Eduardo Oliver. In the current issue of V Magazine, this slim, ripped celebrity takes it all off to pose with Spain's "queen of socials," Carmen Lomana. It's an interesting example of an artistic nude male model shot — and it also gives me an excuse to show some of this jock's earlier model work.

Hay tantos futbolistas en el mundo que han tenido éxito en carreras como modelos también. Uno que está llamando más la atención actualmente es el español Eduardo Oliver.
