In April I interviewed Mercedes for this second series.  At the time of the interview she was finally feeling better after ten days of being sick, really sick.

It’s been waiting to be published.  And now that I’m here in Jerez, it feels like the right time.

Especially after last night.  When Mercedes danced in a way that was basically unbelievable.  And to be expected, as it’s her usual way.  We already know that she eats, sleeps, and drinks flamenco.

But last night was even more unbelievable than normal.

So I thought it appropriate to begin here…

Yo se que tú bailas casi cada día.  ¿Cuál fue la temporada más larga que pasaste sin bailar?
Pues ahora hace poco, una semana y dos días he estado mala.

I know that you dance almost every day.  What is the longest amount of time you’ve gone without dancing?
Well, just recently, a week and two days while I was sick.

¿Esto te hace sentir bastante mal, no?
Claro porque mi cuerpo y mente están acostumbrados a estar todos los días con los zapatos puestos creando y haciendo pero realmente ahora estos diez dias que estaba tan constipada y tan mal es que no tenía ganas de nada la verdad.  Y por último estaba más agobiada.  Ya quería estar bueno.  Ya quería estar bien.  Pero realmente no.   No suelo estar mucho tiempo sin bailar.  No he estado nunca un mes, ni he estado nunca quince días.  Nunca nunca, ni cuando me casé.

And this makes you feel bad, correct?
Of course because my body and mind are used to having flamenco shoes on creating and doing every day, but really for the past ten days I’ve been so stuffed up and sick that I haven’t wanted to do anything really.  Toward the end I was getting annoyed.  I wanted to be well.  But really no, I don’t tend to go very long without dancing.  I’ve never gone a whole month, never gone fifteen days.  Never, ever, not even when I got married.

Y con Pastora tampoco?
Bueno cuando tuve Pasotra.  Yo estuve bailando hasta el día que nació vamos.  Y luego cuando la tuve porque me hicieron cesárea estuve dos semanas y a la tercera empecé.

And not even with Pastora?
Well, when I had Pastora.  I was dancing up until the day she was born.  And after I had her, because I had a cesarean, I waited two weeks, and in the third I started dancing.

You’re really strong.
No.

¿Cuando tú estás bailando, tú estás escuchando a las palabras de las letras o estás más escuchando a la música?
Antes por ejemplo yo no les daba tanta importancia a las letras.  Últimamente en el espectáculo Perspectivas y en el espectáculo Baile de Palabra se baila mucho mas la palabra, lo que dice el cantaor, lo que dice la letra.  Ahora en estos últimos espectáculos estoy intentando mucho más bailar la palabra.  La música en su momento, en las partes mas melodicas, en la parte de la falseta.  Me encanta también.  Antes no tanto pero ultimamente si, bailo mucho al cante, a lo que dice el cante porque son letras que estan hechas para el espectáculo.  Las letras tradicionales del carrito de la fortuna, del hambre que paso tal y tal, no, por ejemplo.  Pero son letras que estan escojidas para el espectáculo y que en el momento de hacer el palo, tengo que darle el carácter y intentar mostrar con el cuerpo y con mi baile lo que está diciendo el cantaor.

When you’re dancing, are you listening to the words of the songs or are you listening more to the music?
Before for example I didn’t pay much attention to the verses.  Lately in shows Perspectivas and in Baile de Palabra I danced much more to the words, to what the singer was saying, to the meaning of the verse.  In these shows I’m trying to dance much more to the meaning of the words.  The music in its moment, in the more melodic parts, I love the guitar solos too.  Before not so much but lately, yes, I dance a lot to the singing, to what the singer is saying because they are songs written for the show.  The traditional verses about the cart of your fortune, about the hunger that I’m faced with, for example, no.  But these are verses that have been chosen for the show and when it’s time to dance the palo I have to express its nature and try to show with the body and with my dancing what the singer is saying.

Y si fuera una letra, no sé, no de tu espectáculo…
Cualquiera, si es algo por lo que te estoy diciendo, que es una letra antigua, no.  Por lo que te digo.  Ni yo he pasado…  Las letras antiguas son todas iguales, que si mi madre, que si he pasado fatigas, y que si tengo hambre.  Esas letras pues no, la verdad.  Es escuchar la forma del cantaor.  La forma en que lo hace.  No la palabra.

And if it were a letra, I don’t know, not from your show…
Any letra, that’s what I’m saying.  If it’s an old letra, no.  Because I haven’t experienced those things.  The old verses are all the same, my mother… I’ve suffered… I’m hungry.  These verses, no truthfully.  In these cases it’s listening to the singer’s interpretation.  The way he sings, not the words.

¿Quién te gusta ver bailar de los de ahora?
De los de ahora me gusta Pastora Galván.  Me gusta Israel Galván.  Me gusta Manuela Carrasco.  Y de los que no están, Farruco, Carmen Amaya, Antonio Gades.  Matilde Coral me encanta. Milagros Menjibar.  La verdad es que tengo una abanico grande.  Intento buscarle el lado positivo y el lado bueno de cada bailaor.

Which dancers from today do you like?
From today I like Pastora Galván.  I like Israel Galván.  I like Manuela Carrasco.  And of those who are no longer around, Farruco, Carmen Amaya, Antonio Gades.  Matilde Coral I love.  Milagros Menjibar.  The truth is I like a wide variety.  I try to find the positive part and the good part of each dancer.

It is great.

Then Ani wanted to teach everyone some new moves.  She talked about how changing your bulerías moves is kind of like changing your clothes.  You might put on a different shirt one day but wear the same skirt from the previous day.  Or perhaps you’ll change both.  It just depends.  The point is you choose.

There is a chance that what I just said makes no sense to you, but I’m tired, and it’s Friday.  So maybe I’ll talk more about this later.  Or maybe I won’t.  For now you can read some related tips from Ani here, or you could just read today’s letra…

It’s the final installment of the interview series with Perico Navarro.  Today he shares some advice for all students, talks about what inspires him, talks about the role of cajón in Jerez, and tells us how he feels about audiences in Jerez and beyond.  If you missed  the previous segments and want to catch up, here are the links.

Inspiration

¿Qué te inspira?
Yo como percusionista flamenco siempre voy acompañando algún artista.  El artista es otro, no soy yo.  Yo soy un músico.  Normalmente como te he dicho que trabajo con artistas tan buenos, siempre es el artista que me inspira en realidad.  Es él que con su música o con su baile o con su cante.  La energía que fluye también, no? entre los músicos que estamos.  Luego para la hora de estudiar lo que me inspira es la música.  Me gusta mucho, es mi lenguaje, es lo que me inspira, lo que me motiva a estudiar.  Y fijarme en otros percusionistas grandes también me inspira mucho.  Muchas veces te inspira y  otras veces te dan ganas de decir bueno voy a dejar esto porque hay tantos monstruos por allí. (risas)

What inspires you?
As a flamenco percussionist I am always accompanying an artist.  The artist is someone else, not me.  I am a musician.  Usually, as I mentioned, since I work with such great artists, it’s really always the artist who inspires me, with his dance or singing.  And the energy that flows between the musicians who are there…  Then what inspires me to study is the music.  I really like it.  It’s my language.  It is what inspires me, what motivates me to study.  And paying attention to other great percussionists also inspires me.  A lot of times it inspires you, and other times it makes you want to say, “Okay, I’m going to stop doing this”  There are so many monsters (amazing musicians) out there.  (laughter)

I was relieved to hear that even someone so accomplished feels this way...

The same thing happens to you, no?

Y digo,  ¿Para qué?  Y en el momento en que digo para que me doy cuenta de que no estoy muy presente y en cuando me ponga presente, digo porque me gusta.  Pero es bueno saberlo…
Claro.  A todos nos pasa.  A mí me pasa también.  Pero luego he escuchado a otra baterísta también, Pedro Barceló.  Le esuché en un clinic hablando de que tampoco es una competición de quien toca más rapido, si no, que es simplemente un lenguaje.  Cada uno expresa su lenguaje, cada uno tiene su particularidad.  Hay gente más rápida, más limpia, pero bueno, cada uno llega hasta donde puede.

Hay gente a veces que tiene una técnica impresionante pero si yo no siento nada cuando tú estás tocando o bailando, da igual…
Claro, la velocidad.  Lo importante más que nada es expresar o transmitir.

And I think,  why?  And in the moment that I ask myself why I realize that I am not very present, and as soon as I become present I say, because I like it.  But it’s good to know…
Of course. It happens to all of us.  It happens to me too.  But I heard another drummer, Pedro Barceló.  I heard him in a clinic talking about how it’s not a competition of who plays the fastest, rather it’s simply a language.  Each person expresses his language, each person has his distinction.  There are people who play faster, cleaner, but each person arrives where they’re able to.

Sometimes there are people who have really good technique, but if I don’t feel anything when you’re playing or dancing, it doesn’t matter…
Of course, the speed.  The most important thing is the the ability to express, to transmit.

The Audience

Me hace mucha gracia el público en Jerez.  Unos dando muchos jaleos otros dicendo, ‘sss.’  En el concierto el otro día, en casi todos los números el público empezaba a aplaudir antes de haber terminado el número.  Eso cómo es?   ¿Cómo se siente?   ¿Les afecta?  ¿No pasa nada?  ¿Se siente cortado?
No al revés.  Es como las cosas están fluyendo bien.  En realidad el público es él que manda.  Es por él que estamos allí tocando.  Yo personalmente estoy más pendiente de mis compañeros que del público en realidad.  Si tú escuchas un aplauso pues es una señal de que lo ha pasado bien.  Pero tampoco me afecta.  Si aplaude bien.  Si no aplaude…  Estoy pensando más en los músicos, en que todo vaya bien.  Pero claro un aplauso te da energía, no, y te da una señal de va bien y de que la gente está receptiva.  Pero también es como lo que tú dices el público es de aquí de Jerez.  Por ejemplo en el extranjero, en Francia la gente muy respetuosa y no aplaude hasta el final a lo mejor.  Tenía un compañero que dice – Vaya público más frío y no sé que. –  A mi no me afecta, sabes?  Yo me fío más en lo que está pasando dentro de lo que está pasando fuera.  Que el público es el que manda y estamos allí por el público pero es lo que te digo que cuando estoy trabajando intento estar concentrado en la música y en que todo vaya bien, que el tiempo vaya bien más de lo que pasa.  Pero como te digo, un aplauso siempre te da energía.

I find the audiences in Jerez so entertaining.  Some people give all kinds of jaleos while others are telling them to be quiet with,  ’sss.’  In the concert the other day the audience started applauding before the piece was finished.  How is this?  How do you feel about it?  Does it affect you?  Or it doesn’t matter?  Do you feel they’re cutting you off?
No on the contrary.  It’s like things are flowing well.  The truth is the audience dictates.  We’re there playing for them.  Personally I’m more attuned to the other musicians than the audience really.  If you hear applause, it’s a signal that they’ve enjoyed it.  But it really doesn’t affect me.  If they applaud, good.  If not, that’s okay.  I am thinking about the musicians, about everything going well.  But, of course, an applause gives you energy.  It gives you a signal that things are going well and that the people are receptive.  But also like you said, those are the audiences here in Jerez.  In other countries, for example, in France, the people are very respectful, and they might not clap until the end.  I once worked with someone who said, “Wow, what a cold audience.”  This doesn’t affect me, you know?  I pay more attention to what is happening onstage than off.  The audience dictates, and we are there for them, but when I am working I try to concentrate on the music and on everything going well.  But an applause always gives you energy.

In Jerez

¿Tienes un palo que más te gusta tocar?
Bueno en donde me siento más cómodo es la bulería.  Creo, porque es el palo de Jerez.  Y la soleá por bulerías también me gusta mucho tocar.  Te iba a decir las alegrías pero aún que ritmicamente son muy parecidas la soleá por bulerías y las alegrías disfruto más con la soleá por bulerías.

Is there a form that you prefer to play?
Well, I feel most comfortable with bulerías.  I think, because it is the palo of Jerez.  And the soleá por bulerías I also like to play. I was going to say alegrías but even though rhythmically soleá por bulerías and alegrías are very similar, I enjoy playing soleá por bulerías more.

Y de las bulerías…Son muy pocas veces que veo el cajón aquí en Jerez.  ¿Está aceptado el cajón aquí en Jerez?
Bueno por ejemplo sobre todo la gente mayor aficionada al flamenco, y que en el flamenco que han escuchado toda la vida ha sido de cante, guitarra y palmas.  Pues hay gente que le puede costar más.  Luego también en los sitios pequeños, las peñas, no se suelte meter mucho porque en primer lugar porque el sitio es pequeño y el cajón a lo mejor tapa un poco.  Y también será eso y será de que las peñas normalmente las lleva la gente mayor aficionada al flamenco más tradicional.  Aquí he tocado en algunas peñas también.  Pero a lo mejor acompañando al baile, el bailaor como que le viene mejor el cajón que un cantaor porque siente mas apoyo rítmico.  Un cantaor, unas palmitas y una guitarra funciona también.  Luego la gente lo suele meter más en un teatro porque el espacio es más grande y llena más.  Pero aquí como son normalmente peñas pequeñitas y tal pues con unas palmitas y eso se llene.  Pero si que es verdad que normalmente suelen llamar percusionistas cuando es un teatro, una sala de concierto, la cosas pequeñas de peña y eso no suele haber, aparte de que no hay dinero para pagar.

Es interesante porque hay un montón de shows aquí en Jerez pero no tienes que pagar para ir.
Claro.

And about bulerías…It is rare to see cajón being played here in Jerez.  Is cajón accepted here in Jerez?
Well, for example, especially with the older people who are really enthusiastic about flamenco and who’ve been listening to flamenco with just singing, guitar, and palmas all of their lives.  Well for those people it’s harder.  Also in small spaces, the flamenco clubs, it’s not common to have cajón first off because it’s a small space and the cajón can cover things up.  And also it would be because the flamenco clubs are usually managed by older people who are more into traditional flamenco.  I’ve played in some peñas here.  But usually accompanying dance, and the dancer might be better off with cajón than just a singer because they feel more supported rhythmically.  A singer, some palmas, and a guitar works too.  People tend to use cajón more in a theatre because the space is larger, and it fills it better.  But here usually in the small flamenco clubs and stuff, with the palmas it works.  But it’s true that usually the tendency is to call percussionists for a theatre, a concert hall.  In small clubs it doesn’t usually happen, apart from the fact that there’s no money to pay.

It’s interesting because there are so many shows going on here in Jerez, but you don’t have to pay for them.
Yeah.

¿Tienes algún consejo para la gente aprendiendo a tocar las palmas y otra para la gente aprendiendo a tocar el cajón?
El consejo que se puede aplicar a cualquier instrumento o cualquier aprendizaje es empezar a estudiar despacio.  Bueno las palmas…

Es que para vosotros es sín pensar pero para nosotros…
(risas) Las palmas es preocuparte un poco del sonido, del abiero y del cerrado y no sé un consejo pues es escuchar mucho flamenco.  Yo cuando me daba cuenta ya sabía sín querer.  Tenía el base de escuchar desde pequeño, de escuchar y escuchar.  Entonces para los que tocan palmas, pues escuchar muchos discos de flamenco, empezar a identificar los palos y los dibujos que hacen las palmas en cada palo y sobre todo escuchar mucho y a los que tocan cajón igual, que empiezan muy despacio y que escuchan mucho flamenco también.  Para que puedan utilizar este lenguaje, necesita haberlo oído antes.  Y sobre todo para los que están con el cajón que empiezan despacio, que la velocidad viene con el tiempo.  Cuanto más despacio estudie, más rápido vas a tocar.  Y a disfrutar del flamenco.

Eso también es importante, o puede ser lo más importante
Claro, hay que disfrutar.

Do you have any advice for people learning to play palmas and learning to play cajón?
Advice that one can apply to any instrument or any learning is to start by playing slowly.  And, well, palmas…

You guys you don’t have to even think about it, but for us…
(laughter) For palmas it’s about paying a bit of attention to the sound, the open and the closed, and I don’t know, some advice is to listen to a lot of flamenco.  Before I realized it, I knew how to do it without thinking.  I had a base from listening from the time I was little, from listening and listening.  So for those who play palmas, listen to a lot of flamenco, start to identify the forms and the clapping patterns in each form and above all listen a lot.  And those who play cajón the same, start slowly and listen to alot of flamenco as well.  In order to speak this language you need to have heard it.  And above all for those who play cajón that they start slowly, speed comes with time.  The slower you study, the faster you’ll play.  And have fun with flamenco.

This is important too, or perhaps the most important
Of course, you’ve got to have fun.

Today’s interview, I have to warn you, gets a bit technical.  But just keep reading, I think you’ll be glad you did.  Pedro talks about outside influences, playing with incredible artists - You’ll see an great video of him playing with El Torta and Jesús Méndez in Jerez – and the beginning of his career with Mercedes Ruíz and Santiago Lara.

The Technical Stuff

¿Tú crees, yo sabiendo muy poco del cajón, que hay técnicas específicas para el cajón flamenco.  ¿Tú tienes tu técnica y tu técnica seria igual que la técnica de otro?
No, no, no.  Cada uno tiene su estilo digamos porque bueno la técnica que utilizamos lo utiliza todo el mundo.  Los paradiddles que son técnicas hoy universales de percusión y batería pero luego la postura o la manera en la que da o los recursos que utiliza si que son personales.  Por ejemplo yo soy derecho y tiro más el grave con la derecha.  Hay gente que tira más con la izquierda.  Hay gente que mete más la mano.  Hay gente que tira más de brazo.  Hay gente que tira más de muñeca.

In your view are there specific techniques for flamenco cajón?  Would your technique be the same as someone else’s?  
No, no, no.  Everyone has his own style because, well, the technique is universal.  The paradiddles are universal techniques for percussion and drums, but then the postures or the way of hitting are personal.  For example I am right handed and I hit the bass with the right.  There are people who do it more with the left.  There are people who use the hand more.  There are people who use the arm more.  There are people who use the wrist more.

¿Entonces no hay tanto correcto que incorrecto?
No, un poco.  Habré que preguntarle a un peruano.  Pero el cajón flamenco es algo que está todavía haciendose en realidad.  Porque aquí lleva veinte años o un poco más treina años entonces no hay una tradición de cajón, que no hay escuela.  Habré que preguntarle a un peruano.  Yo se que un peruano por ejemplo mete más el brazo y yo meto más la muñeca.  Pero como te digo que es algo nuevo.  Algo que no está todavía definido.  Al lo mejor dentro de cincuenta años habrá una escuela y unas técnicas pero hoy por hoy aun que nos parecemos uno al otro, cada uno tiene su manera.

So there is not really a correct or incorrect way?
No, a little.  I would have to ask a Peruvian.  But flamenco cajón is something that is still being developed really.  Because here it’s been twenty years or a little more, thirty years, so there is not a cajón tradition.  There is no school.  I would have to ask a Peruvian.  I know for example that a Peruvian uses the arm more, and I use the wrist more.  But like I said, it’s something new.  Something that is still undetermined.  Perhaps in the next fifty years there will be a school and some set techniques, but for today while we may look the same, each person has their own way of playing.

…Y entonces, como va esto?  Si tú estás tocando para alguien, te pide que toques algo con otro instrumento?
Bueno normalmente es una comunicación entre el artista y el músico.  A lo mejor hay veces que yo digo aquí puede entrar bien este determinado instrumento o hay veces que el artista te dice a este tema me gustaría que tocase la tinaja o suele ser una comunicación.  Hay veces que el artista lo tiene muy claro y te dice que yo quiero esto y otras veces que tú aportas también aquí podemos tocar esto.  Es una comunicación entre los compañeros.

…So how does this work?  When you are playing for someone, do they ask you to incorporate other types of instruments?
Well usually there is a communication between the artist and the musician.  Sometimes I’ll say this particular instrument might work well here or sometimes the artist will say for this piece I would like you to play the clay pot.  There is usually a communication.  Sometimes the artist has a very clear idea and they tell you I want this, and other times you offer ideas too.  It’s a communication between colleagues.

¿Tocando estos instrumentos supuestamente a ti te gusta otros tipos de música aparte del flamenco.  Que otro tipos de música escuchas?
Pues ahora estoy mucho con las música latina.  La música cubana, puertoriqueña, la salsa, porque estoy estudiando congas y la conga es un instrumento latino.  Bueno y aparte de que me gusta mucho las música cubana sobretodo.  Muy alegre y mucho ritmo también, mucha fuerza, mucha percusión.  Y con un lenguaje de percusión muy antiguo también.  Los tambores tiene como algo muy tradicional.  El jazz también.

You must like other types of music apart from flamenco.  What other types of music do you listen to?
Right now I’m really into latin music.  Cuban music, Puerto Rican, salsa because I’m studying congas, and the conga is a latin instrument.  And also I really like Cuban music especially.  It’s really upbeat and with lots of rhythm also, a lot of force, a lot of percussion.  And with an old percussive tradition.  The tambor drums have something very traditional.  And jazz too.

¿Y esas influencias tú aplicas?
Si claro.  Inconscientemente lo que uno va aprendiendo es lo que luego va utilizando en su lenguaje.  También hoy por hoy no solo yo, todos los músicos oyen otra música y a lo mejor una rumba flamenca mete unas congas que es algo latino o no sé el djembe que es algo africano.  Lo que va asimilando luego uno lo va soltando también.

And do you apply these influences?
Yes, of course.  Unconsciously what one studies one incorporates into his vocabulary.  Also these days, not just me, but all musicians hear other types of music, and maybe in a flamenco rumba they play congas, something very latin, or I don’t know the djembe, which is something African.  What one assimilates one later lets go of too.

Playing with Amazing Artists

Tú has colaborado con mucha gente  ¿Cuáles son las colaboraciones que más te ha gustado?
La verdad es que tengo la suerte de trabajar con artista muy buenas.  He trabajado con Mercedes del principio.  He trabajado con Moraito también, unos momentos también súper importante para mi y se quedarán en mis recuerdos siempre.  Moraito yo admiraba desde que era chico cuando tocaba la guitarra.  Y cuando me llamó y empezaba a tocar con él pues…  Luego he trabajado con Paco Cepero también que también es un maestro que tiene mucho arte.  Con Miguel Poveda también he colaborado varias veces que también lo disfruto mucho porque es un pedazo de artista también.  Con Jesús (Méndez) también estoy empezando ahora momentos bonitos porque estoy viendo como va a funcionar.  El otro día por ejemplo el momento con el Torta y Jesús fue un momento inolvidable también.

You have collaborated with many artists.  Which collaborations have you most enjoyed?
The truth is I have the good fortune to work with wonderful artists.  I have worked with Mercedes from the beginning.  I have worked with Moraito too, some really important moments for me that will always remain in my memories.  I admired Moraito from the time I was little playing guitar.  And when he called me and I started to play with him, well…  And I have played with Paco Cepero also who is also a master with so much arte.  With Miguel Poveda I’ve also collaborated on various occassions and I also have a great time because he is also an amazing artist.  With Jesús (Méndez) also I am having a great time.  The other day for example the moment with el Torta and Jesús was an unforgettable moment also.

Jeje.  Claro.  Estabamos riendo.  Porque aquí somos muy fan del Torta, todo el mundo.  Y también le pilló muy bien lo poquito que hizo, lo hizo muy bien.  Pero no sé, un momento pues por ejemplo ese, pero te podría decir cualquier porque como te dijo he tenido la suerte de trabajar con muy buenos artistas.  Entonces no sé cualquier momento podría ser mágico, no?

Haha.  Yeah.  We were laughing.  Because here we’re big fans of el Torta, everyone.  And also he had a great night, the little that he did he did so well.  But I don’t know, a moment, well, for example that one, but I could give you many because like I said I have had the good fortune of working with great artists.  So, I don’t know, any moment could be magical.

Going Pro

¿Ha sido una decisión de ser múscio profesionalmente o ha sucedido?
Fue un poco de casualidad en realidad porque como te he dicho yo tocaba la guitarra.  Con Santi eramos amigos, eramos vecinos del bloque y eramos amigos desde pequeño.  Entonces él empezaba a tocar con Mercedes y yo iba a los ensayos porque me gustaba la guitarra.  Algunas veces he colaborado tocando las palmas con ellos en alguna peña, en un sitio.  Y un día pues el percusionista que iba con ellos para un bolo determinado en Paris pues le falló el percusionista pocos dias antes de irse.  Y me dijeron a mi si yo quería ir.  Como yo sabía la música ya y tal.  Yo no había tocado el cajón nunca.    Había ido a hacer un Rocío.  Pues la primera vez que fui a tocar el cajón fue allí que eran sevillanas que no era un trabajo serio de un teatro ni nada que eran fiestas privadas.  Y era lo único que había hecho hasta entonces.  Y Santi y Mercedes tuvieron el valor de proponermelo.  Yo me prepare en los pocos días que tuvimos.  Y nos fuimos a Paris a hacer un par de actuaciones.

Was it a conscious decision to become a professional musician or did it just happen?
It happened a bit by chance really because like I said I played guitar.  Santi and I were neighbors, and we’d been friends since we were little.  He started playing with Mercedes, and I went to the rehearsals because I liked guitar.  Sometimes I joined in playing palmas with them in a peña or some place.  And one day the percussionist who was supposed to go to play a show in Paris with them canceled a couple of days prior to leaving.  And they asked me if I wanted to go since I knew the music.  I had never played the cajón.  I had gone and played for  Rocío.  That was the first time that I played, sevillanas.  It wasn’t a serious job in a theatre or anything, just private parties.  And that was the only work I’d done until then.  And Santi and Mercedes had the courage to ask me.  I prepared during the few days that we had, and we went to Paris to do some performances.

¿Eso es una buena forma de empezar, no?
Pues imagínate.  Salió más o menos bien y me propusieron de quedarme en la compañía y yo también les dije que bueno que si yo me iba a preocupar de estudiar y a partir de entonces me puse a estudiar cajón y así empece con ellos.

That’s not a bad way to start, eh?
Yeah, can you imagine?  Things went pretty well, and they asked me if I wanted to be in the company, and I said yes that I would study, and from that point I started to study cajón, and that’s how I began with them.
