Five Ways to Save Thousands of Dollars on Your Wedding

A featured wedding planner in Martha Stewart Weddings, we have learned some ticks of the trade to help you in your wedding planning~

Weddings can be expensive.
When the economy is poor, they can seem REALLY expensive. So, here are my tips for saving THOUSANDS on your wedding:

1. CUT YOUR GUEST LIST!!!
I hate to scream, but this really is the quickest way to save cash. Let’s play with some numbers. If you’re inviting 200 guests to your wedding, and your meal is $50 per person, that’s $10,000 BEFORE you include tax and gratuity. But if you cut your list to 100 guests, you’ve saved $5000 just like that!
2. Change the time of Day.–Everyone knows that lunch is cheaper than dinner. Why not consider a lunch reception? Or a brunch reception. It can still be fabulous, but because it’s earlier in the day, your food is less expensive. And people don’t tend to consume large quantities of alcohol during the day, so you save on food and on the bar!

3. Hire a DJ.–This is very simple. Bands can cost $2000-8000. DJs can cost about $150/hour.

4. Kill the Bar.–Alcohol adds up. So many people want an open bar. But those open bars can add thousands of dollars to your bill. Skip the open bar and opt for a signature cocktail that is served during your cocktail hour. Or opt for mock-tails, which are virgin versions of your favorite alcoholic beverage. You can still serve them in pretty glasses with a great garnish…just omit the alcohol.

5. Reconsider the Transportation.–So many people spend thousands on limos. The costs can add up because most limo companies lock you into a minimum number of hours….usually 4 hours. But you might only want the limo to drive you from your church to your reception site. Skip the limo and get a town car! They can be as little as $75/hr and most companies don’t require you to keep them for a minimum number of hours. So, you only pay for the time you use. You still have a driver AND a sleek mode of transportation to get you from point A to point B.

Five Ways to Save Thousands of Dollars on Your Wedding

Weddings can be expensive.

When the economy is poor, they can seem REALLY expensive. So, here are my tips for saving THOUSANDS on your wedding:

1. CUT YOUR GUEST LIST!!! I hate to scream, but this really is the quickest way to save cash. Let’s play with some numbers. If you’re inviting 200 guests to your wedding, and your meal is $50 per person, that’s $10,000 BEFORE you include tax and gratuity. But if you cut your list to 100 guests, you’ve saved $5000 just like that!

2. Change the time of Day.–Everyone knows that lunch is cheaper than dinner. Why not consider a lunch reception? Or a brunch reception. It can still be fabulous, but because it’s earlier in the day, your food is less expensive. And people don’t tend to consume large quantities of alcohol during the day, so you save on food and on the bar!

3. Hire a DJ.–This is very simple. Bands can cost $2000-8000. DJs can cost about $150/hour.

4. Kill the Bar.–Alcohol adds up. So many people want an open bar. But those open bars can add thousands of dollars to your bill. Skip the open bar and opt for a signature cocktail that is served during your cocktail hour. Or opt for mock-tails, which are virgin versions of your favorite alcoholic beverage. You can still serve them in pretty glasses with a great garnish…just omit the alcohol.

5. Reconsider the Transportation.–So many people spend thousands on limos. The costs can add up because most limo companies lock you into a minimum number of hours….usually 4 hours. But you might only want the limo to drive you from your church to your reception site. Skip the limo and get a town car! They can be as little as $75/hr and most companies don’t require you to keep them for a minimum number of hours. So, you only pay for the time you use. You still have a driver AND a sleek mode of transportation to get you from point A to point B.

Bridal Shows are a wonderful resource for brides and grooms planning their wedding. Navigate the crowd successfully with these tips and tricks.

Bridal shows and wedding expos offer one-stop shoppingfor brides and grooms. They provide anywhere from twenty vendors to hundreds of vendors all in one convenient location. But wedding shows can be crowded, with hundreds of couples, mothers, and bridal parties all competing for the same attention from each vendor's booth. Consider the following suggestions to make your visit to a bridal expo event easy, stress-free, and successful.

Set Up a Wedding Email Account

In the early stages of wedding planning, consider setting up a wedding email account through a free online email service, such as Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail. Not only will it be convenient to receive all wedding-related communication through one account, but it will be helpful in keeping your regular email free of unsolicted email. You can also use it down the road, when offering a guests a way to RSVP to your event.

Bring Adhesive Address Labels/Print Address Labels At Home

Most vendors at bridal shows want to collect your information. Save yourself time and writer's cramp by printing up address labels at home prior to arriving. Some wedding expos offer this service when you arrive, but coming prepared will save you money, too. Each label should have the names of both the bride and groom, the preferred mailing address information should be sent to, the wedding email account, and your wedding date. While you may consider adding your phone number, keep in mind that this gives the vendor permission to call you. Save yourself from unsolicited marketing calls by adding your phone number only if you are truly interested in hearing from the vendor by phone.

Pre-register before the show

Save time by registering before the show. Registration only takes a few minutes and will save you from having to fill out a registration form at the show.

The Two-Bag Buddy System

Every vendor wants your business, and they'll be prepared to hand you a remarkable amount of promotional material. Bring one large tote bag to store all of the information in which you are truly interested, and have a friend bring another. When you receive information from a vendor who doesn't offer something you'd like to learn more about, put it in your friend's bag. When you get home, you won't have to sift through a large amount of ads. You'll already know which stack should head right to the recycling bin.

Wedding events can be really exciting and open your eyes to a world of wedding possibilities. Look for money-saving deals, but be cautious when making deposits on services at events. Make sure you have allowed proper time to sort through your budget and what the company can realisitically offer. If you are certain of your decision, always get a receipt and the name of the person you worked with at the event.

A"HOW TO" Guide When Shopping for your Gown

I am in the beginning process of looking for my wedding dress. I wanted to know if you had any tips or suggestions? Also my wedding is set for 8 months away, when is a good time to order/purchase my wedding gown? This couture gown is one of my inspiration dresses by Olge Cassini.

A: This is a common question that alot of my clients ask. Here are some important things to think about and take into consideration when you are scouting the numerous bridal salon for your special dress!

Many gown manufacturers now offer wedding gowns in champagne, ivory, blush, diamond white, etc., these softer hues may be more flattering to your complexion.

Go to your local book store and buy a few wedding magazines . Look through magazines for ideas.

Do some online research on wedding gowns.

Make appointments at bridal shops to start trying things on. Try not to buy the first wedding gown you like.

Limit who will go with you! Bring your maid of honor and/or your mother,. Make sure it is someone whose taste you admire and opinion you truly value. More than two people can turn a day at the bridal shop into an opinion-ridden nightmare.

Bring or wear appropriate undergarments for the fittings. Wear comfortable clothes/shoes to get in and out of.

Avoid wearing excessive make-up!

Remember...Size isn’t everything! Most of the bridal gowns are notoriously smaller than the normal size you wear. So if you normally wear a size 10, be prepared to try on sizes 12 or 14.

Beware of alteration costs! Always ask the salon what these charges maybe. What you may save, you may pay for in alteration fees.

Trying on all those wedding gowns can be quite exhausting! Limit your self to two salons per outing and make sure you have a handy snack stashed in your purse along with a bottle of water.

Have fun! Take pictures and put them in your pre-wedding day scrapbook.

When to Order/Purchase:

Try not to wait too long to start looking for your wedding gown.

A good lead time on placing your order is 6 to 8 months, remember you will need time for your alterations.

Keep in mind that certain manufacturers do take longer for their gowns to ship, possibly up to 6 months.

The normal shipment of wedding gowns is anywhere from in stock and up to 16 weeks ship time.

Fitting your Bridal Gown

Your first fitting should be approximately 5 to 6 weeks before the wedding. If you are dieting this would be a good time to stop and keep a consistent weight

If you are concerned about the size ordered, or if you feel you’ve gained or lost weight have the first fitting 7 to 8 weeks before your BIG day.

Make sure you are clear beforehand about the overall alteration fees and who will be executing the necessary alterations.

After that, plan to have one or two more sessions to make sure everything is perfect and to also put in a bustle.

The last fitting is when the dress is completely altered and everything fits just right. This appointment usually includes instructions on how to bustle your gown and is when you will schedule your pickup date.

When you pick up your dress make sure everything is as it should be. Pay attention to details.

Preserving your Bridal Gown

Have your gown professionally cleaned as soon as possible after the wedding day. There are invisible stains from food, beverages and perspiration that can turn into permanent yellow stains if the gown is not properly cleaned before storage.

Assign your mother or Maid of Honor to the task while you are on your honeymoon.

Make sure whoever you select to clean your gown is not just a dry cleaner yet they are a speciality gown cleaner.

1. Who pays for the wedding?

Traditionally,the bride’s parents paid for most of the wedding, but many couples fundtheir big day themselves these days, or split the cost between bothfamilies. Though no one really likes to bring up the subject, it’simportant to speak to both sets of parents and find out what – ifanything – they’d like to contribute early on.

2. Where do I start with my guest list?

Drawup a list of everyone you’d like to invite in an ideal world and sor tthem into four categories.

a) People who must be invited at all costs – parents, siblings, best friends.

b) Friends that you still see or keep in contact with regularly – workcolleagues (if you’ve been there a while) and long-term freindships from uni,football etc.

c) People you recently met, who may be part of your life but haven’t been around long, such as new work colleagues.

d) Friends you haven’t seen in a long time and don’t keep in contact with,and family members that you don’t have a relationship with.

Nowyour priorities should be clear,“1s and 2s should get aninvitation to the whole event; 3s could come to the evening do; and 4sshouldn’t be invited at all – there are reasons you don’t keep intouch, so be true to yourself.”

3. Who do we invite if we're getting married abroad?

Most couples stick to close family and friends only and then hold apost-wedding party when they get back. If you are marrying in Europeand the costs involved aren't such an issue as for, say, a Caribbean orMauritius wedding, then give your friends the option of coming alongbut make it very clear that you won't be offended if they cannot join you.

4. Who sends the invitations and when?

Traditional invites come from the bride’s parents, though sometimes the groom’s name is followed by “son of (his parents’ names).” These days many couples send their own. “Order them four months before the wedding and mail them eight to 10 weeks before,” says Wedding Bible author Sarah Haywood. “Include a reply card and a pre-addressed envelope to speed things up.”

5. Should I set a dress code?

“Traditionally,a formal engraved invitation meant that guests were expected to wear morning dress – without it being stated on the invite,” says weddingplanner Sophie Lillingston. “Nowadays dress codes can be quite varied and it’s fine to specify what you want – just keep the wording simple and clear.”

6. What time should the bride and groom get to the ceremony?

Thegroom and best man should arrive at the venue at least 30 minutesbefore the bride. It’s the bride’s prerogative to be the last toarrive, but don’t overdo the lateness or your groom may be a bundle ofnerves by the time you make it up the aisle!

7. Do my bridesmaids enter before or after me?

Some brides like to have aflower girl enter first, but there’s no set rule.

8. What duties do the best man and ushers have?

Beforethe wedding, the best man is responsible for the stag do and gettingyour fiancé home safely afterwards! And on the day, he briefs theushers, oversee the buttonholes and make sure all the guests have gothome safely at the end of the evening. Not to mentione the speech,obviously. Ushers direct guests to their seats during the ceremony, andgather guests for photos afterwards.

9. Can my pet dog be part of my wedding?

“The presence of a dog at a wedding ceremony does not affect its legality, “You just need permission from the owner of the building where the wedding is taking place and you need to consult the registrarfor a civil ceremony or the relevant celebrant for a religiousceremony.” If you want your pooch to be present, bring it to rehearsals. “Let it sniff around the venue,” says Mark Johnston,veterinary surgeon . “If there’ll be loud organ music, get a tape recording to play at home, gradually increasing the volume so that your pet gets used to it.”

10. Do we have to have favours?

No,you don’t, especially if you’re on a tight budget. 11. Do we need a receiving line?

Inan ideal world you'd speak to all the guests individually, but this istime consuming and you won't be able to say much more than a hello toeach person. “A good compromise is to go round with your groom to everytable and chat to the table collectively,” says wedding planner Mark Niemierko.

12. Should we offer a choice of food, or stick with a set menu?

If you are having a sit-down meal, it is simpler (and usually cheaper) tostick to a set menu with provision for vegetarians. If you want tooffer more choices it is probably a better option to have a buffet where guests can choose from a selection of meat, fish and vegetarian options. Your guests know they are coming to a wedding and not arestaurant and as long as you choose a fairly simple menu they shouldbe happy.

13. When are the speeches and what order should they go?

Traditionally,the speeches are made as coffee is served and the bride’s father speaksfirst, followed by the groom and best man. However, you could have thespeeches before the meal so that the speakers can relax and enjoy theirfood, or hold them later on when your evening guests are also present.

Althoughit's not traditional, it's becoming more common for brides to say a fewwords. But don't launch into an over-emotional ramble. If in doubt,keep it simple, and go first if you're nervous, or last for maximumimpact!

14. When should we register our gift list?

Sooneris better than later, especially if you’re planning to use one of thepopular department stores. Some will let you register online early, butotherwise 12 weeks is about standard. If you’re sending your invitesout eight to 10 weeks before, you can include information about yourgift list with them.

15. Can we ask for money instead of presents?

Althoughit’s more acceptable now, some guests may still prefer to buy you apresent. A compromise could be to set up a small wedding list andsuggest that vouchers for a variety of retailers would be just asuseful.

Also, some travel companies offer honeymoon gift-listservices, so guests can contribute towards the tailor-made trip of your dreams. However if you make it known that cash would be welcome, most people are happy to oblige!
