Am I Safe?

Our nervous system is the silent communicator between our body, mind, and soul. It is constantly scanning our environment, asking one essential question: Am I safe? When the answer feels uncertain…whether because of past trauma, chronic stress, emotional overwhelm, or simply the relentless pace of modern life, the nervous system shifts into survival mode. In this state, anxiety, tension, hypervigilance, exhaustion, and emotional reactivity become daily companions.

I often remind my clients that healing does not begin by forcing ourselves to think positively. Healing begins by helping the nervous system remember what safety feels like. Only when we feel safe can we also be calm.

Affirmations are far more than uplifting words. When spoken with presence, intention, and repetition, they become gentle signals of reassurance to the nervous system. They interrupt fear-based thought patterns, invite the body to soften, and create new neural pathways rooted in safety rather than survival.

The following five affirmations are designed to regulate and calm the nervous system while nurturing emotional and spiritual healing. As you repeat each affirmation, allow yourself to breathe slowly, placing one hand over your heart or abdomen. Let the words become something you experience, not merely something you say.

1. “In this moment, I am safe.”

This is perhaps the most powerful affirmation for a dysregulated nervous system.

When we have experienced emotional pain, trauma or prolonged stress, the nervous system often reacts to present-day situations as though they carry the same danger as past experiences. Our body may remain on high alert even when there is no immediate threat.

Repeating, “In this moment, I am safe,” gently invites the brain to distinguish between the past and the present. It anchors awareness in what is true now rather than what was true then.

Spiritually, this affirmation is an invitation into presence. The present moment is where peace resides. The mind often lives in memories or imagined futures, while the soul lives here, in this breath.

Why it calms the nervous system:
The affirmation redirects attention away from perceived danger and toward present-moment safety, helping reduce the fight-or-flight response. Over time, this repeated message teaches the brain that calm is a safe place to return to.

2. “I release what I cannot control and trust life’s unfolding.”

One of the greatest sources of nervous system activation is the illusion that we must control every outcome to feel secure.

The nervous system becomes exhausted when it constantly anticipates, plans, worries, and prepares for every possible scenario. Yet true peace is not found through perfect control, it is found through surrender.

This affirmation reminds us that trust is not passive resignation, it is an active choice to loosen our grip on uncertainty.

From a spiritual perspective, surrender is an act of faith. Whether you believe in God, the Universe, divine intelligence, or the wisdom of life itself, trusting that something greater is supporting your journey creates inner spaciousness.

Why it calms the nervous system:
Letting go of excessive control reduces anticipatory anxiety. When the brain no longer feels responsible for predicting every outcome, stress hormones decrease, allowing the body to shift toward rest, calm and restoration.

3. “I am deeply supported by life.”

Many people live with an unconscious belief that they must carry every burden alone.

This belief creates chronic tension because the nervous system feels isolated and responsible for surviving without support. Human beings are biologically wired for connection. We regulate through relationships…with ourselves, with others and with something greater than ourselves.

This affirmation gently reminds us that support exists in countless forms: loving relationships, nature, community, our breath, our intuition, and the unseen spiritual presence that accompanies us through life’s challenges.

The soul remembers that we were never meant to walk this path alone.

Why it calms the nervous system:
Feeling supported activates the nervous system’s social engagement system, the state associated with connection, safety, empathy, and emotional regulation. Simply imagining support can soften feelings of isolation and reduce physiological stress.

4. “I welcome peace into every cell of my body.”

Stress is not experienced only in the mind, it is stored throughout the body.

Tight shoulders, shallow breathing, clenched jaws, digestive discomfort, and fatigue are often physical expressions of a nervous system that has forgotten how to relax.

This affirmation invites peace to become a physical experience rather than an abstract concept. As you repeat it, imagine warmth or soft light flowing through every part of your body, releasing tension one breath at a time.

Visualization paired with affirmation becomes a healing practice that aligns mind, body and spirit. The body begins responding not only to the words but also to the felt sense they create.

Why it calms the nervous system:
Combining calming language with mindful awareness encourages slower breathing, muscle relaxation and increased parasympathetic activity…the branch of the nervous system responsible for healing and restoration.

5. “I am worthy of peace, rest and healing.”

Many people unknowingly believe they must earn rest after productivity, deserve peace only after solving every problem, or heal only after becoming someone different.

These beliefs keep the nervous system trapped in a cycle of striving.

Healing begins when we realize that peace is not a reward, it is our true nature.

This affirmation addresses the deeper emotional patterns of unworthiness that often fuel chronic stress. It reminds us that we do not have to prove our value through constant doing. Our worth exists simply because we exist.

From a spiritual perspective, every soul carries inherent dignity and wholeness. Healing is not about becoming worthy, it is about remembering that we always were.

Why it calms the nervous system:
When we stop believing we must constantly perform or achieve to deserve rest, the body receives permission to relax. This reduces internal pressure, quiets self-critical thinking, and creates the emotional conditions necessary for genuine healing.

A Gentle Practice for Daily Regulation

Affirmations become most effective when they are felt rather than rushed. Choose one affirmation each morning or evening and repeat it slowly for three to five minutes while breathing deeply. Notice where the words land in your body. If resistance arises, welcome it with compassion rather than judgment.

Over time, these affirmations become more than comforting phrases—they become new internal truths. With each repetition, you are teaching your nervous system that safety is possible, peace is available, and healing is already unfolding within you.

Remember, your nervous system is not trying to work against you. It is trying to protect you with the information it has. By offering it new messages of safety, trust, support, peace, and worthiness, you gently guide it out of survival and back into the natural rhythm of healing.

And when the nervous system settles, the mind becomes clearer, the heart opens more freely, and the soul can finally exhale and calm down.

“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.” ~ Harvey Fierstein

There is a sacred silence that heals the soul. It is the silence of meditation, of dawn before the world awakens, of two people sitting together without the need to fill every moment with words. This silence nourishes. This silence heals. It creates space for truth to emerge.

But there is another kind of silence. It is the silence that punishes. The silence that controls. The silence that leaves another human being questioning their worth.

In sessions with clients, I have often witnessed people who say, “At least they never yelled at me.” Yet as they speak, their shoulders collapse under the weight of months or years …of being ignored, excluded, or emotionally abandoned. The wounds are invisible, but they are no less real.

Not every silence is peaceful. Sometimes silence becomes a weapon.

Understanding the Silent Treatment

The silent treatment is more than choosing not to speak. It is the deliberate withdrawal of communication, affection, or emotional presence in order to punish, manipulate, or gain control over another person.

Unlike healthy space, which is communicated with honesty and respect, the silent treatment leaves the other person trapped in uncertainty.

“What did I do wrong?”
“Why won’t they answer me?”
“If I apologize again, maybe they’ll forgive me.”

The silence becomes a prison where the other person is left to question themselves.

This creates emotional insecurity. It fractures the sense of connection that every human heart longs for.

Healthy Silence vs. Harmful Silence

There is an important distinction.

A healthy partner might say: “I’m feeling overwhelmed right now. I need a few hours to calm down. I promise we’ll talk this evening.”

This is emotional responsibility.

The silent treatment sounds very different: No explanation. No reassurance. No timeline. No acknowledgement of your existence.

One creates safety. The other creates fear.

The difference is not silence itself….it is intention.

Why Does Someone Use the Silent Treatment?

People who resort to emotional withdrawal are not always consciously cruel. Sometimes they learned early in life that emotions were dangerous.

Maybe conflict in their childhood home exploded into violence.
Maybe they were punished for expressing feelings.
Maybe emotional withdrawal was the only power they ever witnessed.

Without healing, they repeat what they learned.

Others use silence intentionally because they have discovered that it gives them control. When they withdraw, the other person begins chasing. They apologize more than necessary. They abandon their own needs. They become increasingly desperate to restore connection.

Power quietly shifts.

The one who speaks less often controls more.

The Spiritual Wound of Being Ignored

Human beings are wired for connection. Neuroscience tells us that social rejection activates many of the same brain regions involved in physical pain. Spiritually, this makes profound sense.

We are relational beings. To be consistently ignored is to experience a form of emotional exile.

The silent treatment whispers painful messages: “You do not matter.”, “Your feelings are inconvenient.”, “Love is conditional.”

Over time these messages become internal beliefs.

Many people stop asking for what they need. They become hypervigilant. They monitor every word, every facial expression, every mistake. Their nervous system begins living in survival mode.

Why It Feels So Addictive

One of the most confusing aspects of emotionally abusive relationships is that moments of affection often return after periods of silence. After days of emotional absence, the partner suddenly smiles. They act as though nothing happened. They may even offer affection.

The relief feels overwhelming.

Unfortunately, this pattern trains the nervous system to equate relief with love. This creates what we psychologists often describe as an unhealthy attachment cycle.

It becomes a cycle of forgetting one’s own inherent worth in exchange for temporary emotional relief.

Breaking the Cycle

Healing begins the moment you stop asking, “How do I get them to talk to me?” and begin asking, “Why have I accepted a relationship where my dignity depends upon someone else’s willingness to acknowledge my existence?”

This question changes everything.

Instead of chasing validation, you return home to yourself. You reconnect with your body. You trust your intuition. You surround yourself with relationships where communication is imperfect but respectful.

You stop negotiating for basic human kindness.

When Silence Is Necessary

There are moments when silence is wise. During intense anger. During emotional overwhelm. When words would cause unnecessary harm.

Sacred silence creates reflection. Abusive silence creates isolation.

One protects the relationship. The other slowly erodes it.

The distinction is everything.

A Spiritual Invitation

Every relationship becomes a mirror. Sometimes it reflects our love. Sometimes it reflects our wounds.

If you have experienced the silent treatment, do not rush to conclude that you are unworthy of love. Instead, consider another possibility. Perhaps life is inviting you to rediscover the relationship that no one else can give you, the relationship with your own soul.

The soul does not manipulate. The soul does not withhold affection to gain power. The soul does not ask you to earn your belonging.

Its message is remarkably simple: “You are already worthy.”

From that place of remembering, your choices begin to change. You stop confusing emotional absence with mystery. You stop mistaking inconsistency for passion. You stop calling emotional neglect “patience.”

Instead, you seek relationships where conflict is met with conversation, where silence is used for healing rather than punishment, and where love is measured not by how long someone can ignore you—but by how safely you can both return to one another after life’s inevitable storms.

For in the end, healthy love does not make you disappear. It helps you become more fully yourself.

Have you been on the receiving end of the silent treatment?

Imagine yourself sitting beside a campfire….

As the flames dance against the night sky, people arrive and depart throughout the evening. Some linger only briefly before continuing their journey. Others remain for hours, sharing stories, laughter, and quiet moments of connection. A few stay until the final embers glow softly beneath the ashes.

You would never look at the fire and conclude that its warmth had diminished simply because someone chose to leave. You understand instinctively that each person is responding to the rhythm of their own life. Their departure says more about their path than it does about the fire itself.

Our relationships unfold in much the same way.

Yet many of us carry an unconscious belief that every ending is evidence of inadequacy. When a friendship fades, we search ourselves for flaws. We replay conversations, question our worth, and quietly wonder whether we were enough.

This response is deeply human, but not always truthful.

Relationships Evolve

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” ~ Carl Jung

Becoming ourselves inevitably means that our relationships evolve as well. Not everyone is meant to accompany us through every chapter of that journey.

Growth changes us.

Marriage changes us.

Parenthood changes us.

Loss changes us.

New responsibilities reshape our attention, our energy, and our capacity. Sometimes friendships end not because love has disappeared, but because life has asked each person to serve a different calling for a season.

Rather than viewing these transitions as abandonment, we can see them as expressions of life’s natural cycles.

Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield reminds us, “Everything changes. This is the basic truth of the universe.”
Suffering often arises not from change itself, but from our resistance to it.

The Spiritual Perspective

Spiritual maturity invites another way of seeing.

Every person who enters our lives becomes part of our inner landscape. Their presence leaves an imprint upon our hearts, whether they stay for months or decades. The value of a relationship is not measured solely by its duration but by the depth of transformation it awakens within us.

Psychologist and spiritual teacher Ram Dass often said, “We’re all just walking each other home.”
Some companions walk beside us for miles. Others accompany us only for a few steps. Yet each encounter offers an opportunity to learn, heal, and remember our shared humanity.

This perspective gently shifts our attention from clinging to cultivating.

Our task is not to persuade everyone to remain around our fire forever. Our task is to tend the fire. To nurture our own inner warmth. To continue practicing kindness. To remain emotionally available. To keep creating spaces where authenticity, compassion, and belonging can flourish.

When Relationships End…

“Connection is why we’re here; it gives purpose and meaning to our lives.” ~ Brené Brown

Genuine connection cannot be forced or possessed. It can only be offered.

When one person quietly walks away, another may be searching for exactly the kind of warmth your fire provides.

Life continuously rearranges our circles, not as a punishment, but as an invitation to expand our capacity for love without attachment.

The healthiest communities are not those in which everyone stays forever.

They are created by people who continue to love without clinging, welcome without expectation, and offer warmth without keeping score.

So tend your fire.

Keep placing another chair around it. Keep making room for new conversations, unexpected friendships, and sacred encounters. Trust that those who are meant to gather beside your fire will arrive when the season is right.

And when it’s time for someone to continue their journey, bless them with gratitude rather than grief. For the true work of the soul is not to hold every traveller. It is to keep the fire burning.
