<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since I was a little girl, I have always been captivated by intelligent people. My father was an intelligent man&#8230;well-read, thoughtful, and deeply wise, so I was naturally exposed to art, culture, and literature through him. As I read and learned, my thirst for wisdom only deepened. I loved knowing that intelligence was something I could cultivate through reading and learning. I loved that it was within my control. And to this day, I continue to pursue it, happily and intentionally.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my more naïve years, I believed that intelligence and emotional intelligence were one and the same. I assumed that intellectually intelligent people must also be emotionally intelligent. But how mistaken I was. Life has gently, and sometimes painfully, taught me that they are not synonymous. Intelligence does not automatically translate into emotional intelligence, just as education and social status do not guarantee empathy or compassion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Through my healing journey, I have come to understand that emotional intelligence is not merely a social skill that can be acquired. It is something far deeper. It is inner maturity. It is the soul’s ability to remain awake and present in the face of emotions, its own and that of others.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, I would like to share with you the signs of genuine emotional intelligence as I have come to understand them over the years. This understanding has supported me profoundly in becoming the most healed, authentic, and grounded version of myself. <h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. You Do Not Need to Win Every Argument</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ego wants victory. The soul wants understanding.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you no longer feel compelled to prove yourself right, you are operating from inner security rather than fear. Carl Rogers wrote, <em>“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”</em> Emotional intelligence begins with that acceptance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of escalating conflict, you ask: <em>What is this moment teaching me?</em><br>Sometimes peace is the greater triumph.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. You Sense Emotional Undercurrents</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You feel what is not being said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a meeting, you notice the tension behind someone’s smile. At dinner, you sense a loved one withdrawing. This is attunement, the nervous system recognizing subtle shifts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A form of emotional intelligence is also empathy&#8230; as that is the capacity to read emotional cues. Spiritually, it is compassion in action. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, <em>“When you love someone, the best thing you can offer is your presence.”</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You offer empathy and presence before solutions.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. You Take Responsibility for Your Mistakes</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Accountability is a sacred act.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You say, “I was wrong,” without collapsing into shame. Shame says, <em>I am bad.</em> Responsibility says, <em>I can grow.</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Brené Brown reminds us, <em>“Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage.”</em> When you own your mistakes, trust deepens&#8230;within yourself and with others. Which in turn leads to emotional growth and definite emotional intelligence  .</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. You Make People Feel Seen</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You remember small details. You listen without interrupting. You respond to the emotion beneath the words.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Carl Jung observed, <em>“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.”</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Emotionally intelligent people transform rooms simply by making others feel acknowledged.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Being seen heals the nervous system yours and everyone who comes in contact with you.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. You Manage Stress Without Spreading It</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pain that is not processed becomes projected.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When overwhelmed, you pause rather than explode. You breathe rather than blame. Viktor Frankl wrote, <em>“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.”</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Emotional intelligence lives in that space.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of infecting others with your anxiety, you metabolize it internally through reflection, prayer, journaling, or silence.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">6. You Disagree Without Disrespect</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You protect connection more than pride.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can say, “I see it differently,” without attacking character. This reflects inner differentiation—you are secure enough to let others think differently.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Dalai Lama teaches, <em>“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”</em><br>Even in disagreement, kindness is possible.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7. You Remain Kind When Kindness Is Not Returned</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is emotional sovereignty.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You do not mirror chaos. You do not inherit moods that are not yours. You recognize projection when you see it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As Rumi wrote, <em>“Raise your words, not your voice.”</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Emotionally intelligent people understand: another’s storm does not require their thunder.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">8. You Stay Calm When Others Lose Control</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Calm is contagious but so is panic.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When someone escalates, you regulate yourself first. Your breath steadies the room. Your grounded tone lowers intensity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Neuroscience confirms what contemplative traditions have long taught: regulated nervous systems co-regulate others.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Composure is not suppression. It is anchored awareness.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">9. You Receive Feedback Without Defensiveness</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You listen to understand, not to defend.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When criticized, you ask:<br><em>Is there truth here I can use?</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You do not react immediately. You reflect. Even if the delivery is imperfect, you search for the lesson.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is humility, an openness to refinement.</p>

<li>Strength balanced with compassion and kindness</li>



<li>Self-knowledge aligned with responsibility</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ultimately, it is not about controlling emotions, it is about befriending them. And when you befriend your own inner world, you become a calm and safe space for yourself and for everyone around you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This week did not arrive with fireworks or fanfare. It came quietly, as most meaningful weeks do.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a <a href="https://positiveprovocations.com/online-counseling/">therapist</a>, I often remind my clients that a beautiful life is rarely dramatic. It is textured. Layered. Gently inhabited. It is built from moments that do not demand attention, but invite presence.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There were cozy corners with books resting open in warm lamplight. There were bowls of fresh fruit prepared slowly, eaten without rushing. There were small rituals like skincare applied with care, drawers organized, a mirror glance that felt like recognition rather than critique.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some days carried a sense of glow&#8230; getting ready, tending to appearance, feeling aligned and put together. Other days asked for softness&#8230; staying in, exhaling, allowing life to unfold without force.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There was a little indulgence. A small purchase made without guilt. A reminder that pleasure does not require justification.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There were shared smiles. Long hugs. The kind of love that turns any space into sanctuary.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And woven through it all: growth. Gratitude. A quiet knowing that nothing is missing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Romanticizing life is not about illusion, it is about attention. It is the art of relating to your own existence with tenderness.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are five calm and practical ways to begin:</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">How to Romanticize Your Everyday Life and Feel More Present</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>1. Practice intentional noticing.</strong><br>Choose one ordinary moment each day- your morning coffee, your commute, the way light falls across a wall, and pause long enough to truly see it. Beauty reveals itself when observed without hurry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>2. Create micro-rituals.</strong><br>Turn small acts into sacred ones. Apply lotion slowly. Plate your food thoughtfully. Light a candle before reading. Ritual signals to the nervous system that life is worthy of reverence.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>3. Allow pleasure without negotiation.</strong><br>Buy the flowers. Wear the outfit. Take the photo. Joy does not need to be earned, it simply needs to be permitted.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>4. Celebrate quiet competence.</strong><br>Romanticizing life includes honoring your own stability. Paying bills. Keeping promises. Caring for your body. These are not mundane, they are self love in practical form.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>5. End each day with gratitude for one “ordinary miracle.”</strong><br>A kind message. A warm shower. A laugh you didn’t expect. Over time, this practice rewires you to experience life as generous rather than lacking.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The truth is, the days we long for later are rarely the extraordinary ones.<br>They are the softly lived days. The grounded days. The days when we were simply present.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, romanticize your life&#8230; not by escaping it, but by inhabiting it fully.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Celebrate the quiet wins.<br>Take the photos.<br>Read the book.<br>Care for your skin.<br>Eat the fruit.<br>Love deeply.<br>Rest without apology.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because these are the days we’ll want back someday. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self-love is not narcissism. It’s not bypassing pain or pretending everything is fine. True self-love is the brave, steady practice of turning toward yourself with honesty, warmth, and care&#8230;especially when you’re struggling. And yes, it heals. I&#8217;m living proof of how self love can heal even after major losses, major traumas, abuse, heart break, depression etc. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Self-Love Heals at the Deepest Level</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self-love regulates the nervous system. When you treat yourself with kindness instead of criticism, your body receives the signal: <em>I am safe.</em> Cortisol drops. The inner alarm quiets. You become more resilient, more flexible, more able to grow.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self-love restores connection. Many of us carry a subtle belief that <em>we must earn love</em> by being better, smaller, stronger, or more pleasing. Self-love gently dismantles that illusion and brings us back to wholeness, the remembrance that we are already worthy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Humanistic psychologist <strong>Carl Rogers</strong> named this beautifully:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”</p>
</blockquote>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Deep healing doesn’t begin with self-improvement. It begins with self-acceptance. Accepting ourself fully, flaws and all.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Self-Love Is Not a Feeling, It’s a Practice</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We often wait to <em>feel</em> loving toward ourselves before we act kindly. Healing works the other way around. We practice love, and the feeling follows.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Psychologist and self-compassion researcher <strong>Dr. Kristin Neff</strong> puts it this way:</p>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Self-compassion involves treating yourself with the same kindness, concern, and support you’d show to a good friend.”</p>
</blockquote>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Notice how practical that is. Not mystical. Not complicated. Just… human.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you respond to your own pain with understanding instead of judgment, you interrupt old emotional patterns and create new neural pathways. Spiritually speaking, you stop abandoning yourself and that reunion is deeply healing.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Shadow Side: Why Self-Love Can Feel Uncomfortable</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If self-love feels awkward or even wrong, there’s nothing “unspiritual” about that. Many of us learned early that love was conditional. Being hard on ourselves once felt like protection: <em>If I criticize myself first, maybe I won’t be rejected.</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self-love asks us to lay down that armor.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As teacher <strong>Thích Nhất Hạnh</strong> reminds us:</p>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“To love oneself is the foundation for loving another person.”</p>
</blockquote>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When we soften toward ourselves, old grief can surface. That’s not failure&#8230;that’s healing in motion.</p>

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Valentine’s Day as a Portal for Self-Love</h1>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Valentine’s Day can amplify feelings of longing, comparison, or loneliness. Instead of resisting that energy, we can repurpose it. Let this day be about choosing <em>presence over performance</em> and <em>care over critique</em>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are gentle, practical ways to love yourself a little extra&#8230;psychologically and spiritually this Valentine’s Day:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Create a Self-Love Ritual</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Light a candle. Put your hand on your heart. Breathe slowly for one minute. Say (out loud if you can):<br><em>“I am here with you. You don’t have to do this alone.”</em><br>This simple act builds inner safety and deepens your relationship with yourself.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Take Yourself on a Conscious Date</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Do something that feels nourishing, not numbing. A walk in nature. A solo lunch with your phone put away. A long bath with intention. Treat your time as sacred. I love taking myself to a cosy café I love for coffee and croissant, watching life(people watching) or reading my favourite book.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Speak to Yourself Like Someone You Love</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pay attention to your inner dialogue today. When criticism arises, gently reframe it. Ask: <em>Would I say this to someone I care about?</em> If not, choose different words.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As <strong>Brené Brown</strong> says:</p>



<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Worthiness doesn’t have prerequisites.”</p>
</blockquote>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don’t need to earn rest, pleasure, or compassion.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Write a short note acknowledging what you’ve survived, what you’re learning, and what you appreciate about yourself, not just achievements, but qualities like courage, sensitivity, persistence.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Poet and activist <strong>Maya Angelou</strong> offered this truth:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“If you don’t love yourself, you can’t love anybody else.”</p>
</blockquote>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Loving yourself expands your capacity to love the world you live in too.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Healing Affirmations for Self-Love</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Read these slowly. Let your body feel them, not just your mind:</p>

<li><em>I am allowed to be imperfect and still worthy of love.</em></li>



<li><em>My needs matter, and I honor them without guilt.</em></li>



<li><em>I choose to meet myself with compassion today.</em></li>



<li><em>The way I speak to myself is becoming more loving and gentle.</em></li>



<li><em>I am learning to trust that I am enough as I am.</em></li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don’t have to believe every word immediately. Healing often begins with willingness, not certainty.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Closing Reflection</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self-love is not a destination, it’s building a deeper relationship with your true self. One that deepens with patience, honesty, and practice. Each time you choose kindness over self-attack, presence over avoidance, you are healing something ancient, something generational inside you.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This Valentine’s Day, may you remember: the love you are waiting for is not missing. It’s already within you, learning how to speak in a kinder voice.</p>
