2012 began with earthquakes in Ohio linked to hydraulic fracking for shale gas. Already this is starting to look like an apt metaphor for the stress fractures appearing right across our society as we move into the age of extreme energy. Fighting for the environment has never been for the faint hearted — when your message runs against someone's chance to make serious money you can expect to come up against some opposition. But with the economy on the floor, and a growing number of people questioning the wisdom of the market to turn things around, this battle is becoming acrid as Asher Miller's post Enemies of the State reveals.

Crucial in the face of the spin and the hype is to stay focused on facts. In 2011 PCI Fellow David Hughes wrote our acclaimed report Will Natural Gas Fuel America in the 21st Century? A monthly update from the US regional hub of the international Transition movement.

This year is bursting forth with collaboration and synchronicity. In the Fall, we put out a general survey to get a sense of how Transition is evolving in the US. Thanks to over 250 people who responded to the survey, we have a better sense of challenges and successes, how best to develop resources and support, and a reflection of the collective vision for this evolving network. Check out the results from our Annual Survey for 2011!

This month we welcome four new official Transition Initiatives: Transition Marbleton (NY), Transition Letcher County (KY), Berkeley Transition Initiative (CA), and Local 2020 (WA). What a year it's been: revolutions, protests, financial crises, high oil prices, a tsunami, massive floods, record droughts,...and all the many personal stories behind these headline events. PCI readers know that we're experiencing the effects of overshoot on a finite planet. But the mainstream narrative is still focused on a return to economic growth at any and all costs—literally. Our work is therefore more urgent than ever.

Together, with your support, we've punched above our weight in 2011, and we want to do even more in 2012. The first item on the agenda is our new customizable presentation—You Are Here: The Oil Journey— that you can deliver in your community. Following shortly will be the release of Michael Shuman's new book Local Dollars, Local Sense: How to Shift Your Money from Wall Street to Main Street and Achieve Real Prosperity, just the first in a series of Community Resilience Guides. This year has been a full year for us at Transition US. Here are some highlights of key moments: we welcomed our 100th Official Transition Initiative in an American city/town (and we're now at #107); over 1500 actions in 226 different cities and towns were leveraged as part of our 350 Home & Garden Challenge, which we organized in collaboration with a crew of amazing partner organizations; 24 two-day Training for Transition (T4T) courses were held across the country; we hosted over 30 webinars and online dialogue events, including (click on the link for the recording):

In 2012 we plan to mobilize thousands of new residents, create innumerable sustainability actions and provide the community networks and cross-sector collaborations needed to Transition our towns and cities across the US. With the economic and ecological crises biting hard, and the Durban climate change talks all but stalled before they started this week, there is so much to fight against. In November, we took a moment to flip the focus and talk about what we're fighting for. We kept the list to 7 elements - there are of course more so check out our issues page. We'd love to hear your ideas about what we came up with, and get your suggestions. A monthly update from the US regional hub of the international Transition movement.

In many #Occupy gatherings in cities across the country, people are gathering for teach-ins and sharing skills to build this movement. Here is a digest of some of the articles and resources that we've found insightful in thinking about how we can be bold in our next steps and combine our Transition thinking with this new surge of momentum around change.

We're also excited about the release of the film Growthbusters, which recently premiered with Transition folks in Colorado, San Francisco Bay Area. The #Occupy movement has spread throughout the US and abroad, moving many to join or start their own #Occupy efforts, and countless pundits, politicians, and interest groups of all stripes puzzling to figure out what the movement is all about. Curious ourselves, we sent an enterprising young filmmaker to NYC, armed with 100 copies of The End of Growth and some questions. Check out his first report below.

The new version of the 'Transition Primer' (US version) is now available on the TUS website. It has a fresh new look as well as new sections on peak oil, exponential growth, and resilence indicators. A future version will include sections on things like working with local government.

* We're well into production of our "Shared Future" presentation (see Asher's blog). Thanks to your feedback, we're confident that we'll produce a powerful and customizable slide deck that you will be able to deliver in your community to educate and inspire. Already, nearly 100 of you have signed up as presenters!

* Also in the hopper is the new book by PCI's Local Economics Fellow Michael Shuman. You've helped us with the title: Local Dollars, Local Sense: How to Shift Your Money from Wall Street to Main Street and Achieve Real Prosperity. Thank you! This will be the first of three Resilience Guides, slated for staggered release starting in February 2012.

* Senior Fellow Richard Heinberg returned home only yesterday from the road, where he delivered well-attended "End of Growth" talks in Kansas City, Salina, Salt Lake City and Jackson, Wyoming.
