Moss Growth 37 Storm Chasers Scott Mcpartland And Max Olson

My interview with long time Veteran Storm Chaser Scott Mcpartland from Queens, NYC. Scott is one of the many chasers who have been instrumental in my life and my chasing career. Based on his Chaser Philosophy, Incredible Photography, Contagious Personality, and a little ENVY in the tornadoes that he has been there to see ;)

Also joining us was Storm Chaser Max Olson from Parker, Colorado who is helping Scott with his chaser vehicle in that he has made some Hail Guards for it. Max also talked about some of his chases along with Scott during the "Storytime" portion of the interview.

Icing For Sunday And Severe On Tuesday For Indy Metro?

My short answer for both those questions= Not Likely. Here's why:

HPC outlook first shows the best probability of icing well NW of us

And even SREF probabilities of Freezing Rain doesn't even register until you get in far NW Indiana (Which a Freezing Rain Advisory is in effect there as of this writing)

The better moisture also gets advected more NW of us as well. Still a bit of dry air around here (Had a 35 degree high with a forecasted 17 degree low tonight= LOW DEWPOINTS)

As the Precip moves in, all of the Critical Thickness Values that would favor more of a Freezing Rain look are WELL north of us

The Meteogram shows some probability of Freezing Rain. But with the temps above freezing it's a safe call to call for Rain with some Freezing Rain PERHAPS mixing in.

Looking to Tuesday. A little bit of CAPE comes in (MLCAPE or Average). That could be some "fuel" ahead of the storm

This is the highest STP forecasted value I can find for Tuesday (And it's early in the morning too)

SPC thinks some isolated Elevated Storms might fire on Sunday Evening in the White Area

And a little wider area on Monday

And over a Wider area Tues-Thurs (Could even include parts of the East Coast On Late Thurs-Fri Time Frame)

Trough Maintains a Slight Positive Tilt. This will keep moisture flowing strong (Perhaps too strong) that can keep the sunshine away and hence keeping the instability levels lower. But with that strong jet streak, I can't rule out a gusty t-storm or two with the instability (Meager as it is 250-500 J/KG) in place. Tornado threat would be more into the Southern Plains/SE where better instability will reside.

HOWEVER I keep seeing this little Vort Max popping up in modeling ahead of the Main Trough. It's got me curious what modeling is picking up on. I wish a warm front would be close by, but it appears it's going to pass us about 24 hours too soon:

But it could bring some really warm temps. I wonder if NOAA'S depiction for Indianapolis (KIND on this map) is a bit too high?

Probably is due to the persistent cloud cover. But who knows. Exciting days ahead my friends!

Clipper snow tomorrow and Severe Next Week For Indy Metro?

Let's take a look at the storm for tomorrow. It's not looking like very much at all. More of a nuisance type storm than anything

RAP Model shows very little moisture

There's the disturbance coming down. More of a typical clipper looking type system

WRF-NAM look shows the deeper moistuer in Kentucky and Tennessee. There are already advisories in this area and points just East of there for Snow and Freezing Rain

Purple are Winter Weather Advisories, Dark Pink are Freezing Rain Advisories. Blue are Winter Storm Watches

Look at the maps, looks like mainly snow in Indiana

Looks like the NAM/WRF look as got the placement of the heavier Precipitation areas outlined good. Lake effect will kick in behind this system a bit too.

GFS is about in the same place. From the consensus that I see and the higher snow ratios but very low Precip. Water Values, my prediction for Indy Metro is 1-3 inches of snow (Classic Clipper amounts)

Some Skinny CAPE coming into Central Indiana on Tuesday ahead of a Positively/Neutral Tilted Trough

Warm Sector Will Be Wide Open. Lots of moisture and mild temps should be ahead of this system on Tuesday. Highest Temp and Dewpoint:

There's the GFS Depiction Of The Skinny, Unstable Theta-E Axis ahead of the front

GFS shows the low position on Tuesday Afternoon nearing Omaha, Nebraska

Euro shows it Tuesday Afternoon near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Some inconsistencies but will continue to monitor. But looks like 1-3 inches of snow in Indy Metro Tomorrow And perhaps a Squall Line Of Strong/Severe Storms On Tuesday For Indy Metro and points South and West

Winter Sticking Around?

For weeks at a time, I would say no. On and Off (Transient In Nature)Yes:

Nao is Negative which is what we want to see

Artic Oscillation is also negative which is good

PNA is negative. BADDDDDDDDDDDD! This causes troughing in the west and leads to more ridging and warmer air out east

EPO is negative which helps as well but essentially gets cancelled out due to Negative PNA

200 MB Wind Patterns shows a powerhouse series of jet disturbances in the Polar Jet. On the right notice the strong Northern Branch system with a connection to a strong jet in the Subtropical Jet. A bit what you would see in a El Nino year though this technically is still a Neutral Pattern

There's the current ENSO look. Slightly warmer than average but not too bad

Is the snow coming? In spurts yeah, but not convinced long term just yet though there is some agreement on the GFS/EURO of a snowstorm next week and week after near Christmas

Severe Weather Even TORNADOES possible in Central And Southern Indiana Today?

Welp, let's take a looksie:

Thursday Evening. 500 mb winds nearing 100 KT coming towards the area in a neutral but increasingly diffluent flow.

Nam is a little bullish on the CAPE but if enough sunshine stays out, it could happen

0-6 KM Bulk Shear of 100 kts snaking into Southern Indiana is INSANE!

0-1 KM Helicity of 400 m2/s2 over Central Indiana is also INSANE!

850 MB winds are around 35-40 kts. Pretty decent but it looks like stronger winds may advect with time northward.

The modified NAM sounding for Indianapolis for around the prime time. If you notice temps warm sharply at 850 MB. OUCH that could mean a Capping inversion. The Hodograph to the right is large, clockwise, curved and CRAZY if any storm could get rooted into that!

Interesting Values Coming Off The SREF For the next 24-48 Hours

STP Values are up to 2 in Alabama later this evening. The values of 2 go into Georgia For Thursday
