Step 1.avoid third party java-script for your Website.

For many script-intensive applications, the bulk of the JavaScript code handles user-initiated events, such as mouse-clicking and dragging, form entry and submission, hidden elements expansion, and so on. All of these user-triggered events occur after the page is loaded and the onload event is triggered. Therefore, much of the delay in the "critical path" (the time to load the main page at startup) could be avoided by deferring the loading of the JavaScript until it's actually needed. While this "lazy" method of loading doesn't reduce the total JS payload, it can significantly reduce the number of bytes needed to load the initial state of the page, and allows the remaining bytes to be loaded asynchronously in the background.

To use this technique, you should first identify all of the JavaScript functions that are not actually used by the document before the onload event. For any file containing more than 25 uncalled functions, move all of those functions to a separate, external JS file. This may require some refactoring of your code to work around dependencies between files. (For files containing fewer than 25 uncalled functions, it's not worth the effort of refactoring.)

Then, you insert a JavaScript event listener in the head of the containing document that forces the external file to be loaded after the onload event. You can do this by any of the usual scripting means, but we recommend a very simple scripted DOM element (to avoid cross-browser and same-domain policy issues). Here's an example (where "deferredfunctions.js" contains the functions to be lazily loaded):

Choose an appropriate image file format.
The type of an image can have a drastic impact on the file size. Use these guidelines: 
PNGs are almost always superior to GIFs and are usually the best choice. IE 4.0b1+, Mac IE 5.0+, Opera 3.51+ and Netscape 4.04+ as well as all versions of Safari and Firefox fully support PNG, including transparency. IE versions 4 to 6 don't support alpha channel transparency (partial transparency) but they support 256-color-or-less PNGs with 1-bit transparency (the same that is supported for GIFs). IE 7 and 8 support alpha transparent PNGs except when an alpha opacity filter is applied to the element. You can generate or convert suitable PNGs with GIMP by using "Indexed" rather than "RGB" mode. If you must maintain compatibility with 3.x-level browsers, serve an alternate GIF to those browsers. 
Use GIFs for very small or simple graphics (e.g. less than 10x10 pixels, or a color palette of less than 3 colors) and for images which contain animation. If you think an image might compress better as a GIF, try it as a PNG and a GIF and pick the smaller.
Use JPGs for all photographic-style images. 
 Do not use BMPs or TIFFs.

Tip: When you run Page Speed against a page referencing CSS files, it identifies all CSS rules that don't apply to that page.

Step 4. Removing or deferring style rules that are not used by a document avoid downloads unnecessary bytes and allow the browser to start rendering sooner.

Before a browser can begin to render a web page, it must download and parse any stylesheets that are required to lay out the page. Even if a stylesheet is in an external file that is cached, rendering is blocked until the browser loads the stylesheet from disk. In addition, once the stylesheet is loaded, the browser's CSS engine has to evaluate every rule contained in the file to see if the rule applies to the current page. Often, many web sites reuse the same external CSS file for all of their pages, even if many of the rules defined in it don't apply to the current page.The best way to minimize the latency caused by stylesheet loading and rendering time is to cut down on the CSS footprint; an obvious way to do this is to remove or defer CSS rules that aren't actually used by the current page.

                                  Introduction to TIDY

When editing HTML it's easy to make mistakes. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a simple way to fix these mistakes automatically and tidy up sloppy editing into nicely layed out markup? Well now there is! Dave Raggett's HTML TIDY is a free utility for doing just that. It also works great on the atrociously hard to read markup generated by specialized HTML editors and conversion tools, and can help you identify where you need to pay further attention on making your pages more accessible to people with disabilities.

Tidy is able to fix up a wide range of problems and to bring to your attention things that you need to work on yourself. Each item found is listed with the line number and column so that you can see where the problem lies in your markup. Tidy won't generate a cleaned up version when there are problems that it can't be sure of how to handle. These are logged as "errors" rather than "warnings".




Dave Raggett has now passed the baton for maintaining Tidy to a group of volunteers working together as part of the open source community at Source Forge. The source code continues to be available under an open source license, and you are encouraged to pass on bug reports and enhancement requests at http://tidy.sourceforge.net.

More recently, Tidy has been extended to support HTML5 and to clean up HTML exported from Google Docs. The source code is available on github, see tidy-html5.

Tidy can now perform wonders on HTML saved from Microsoft Word 2000! Word bulks out HTML files with stuff for round-tripping presentation between HTML and Word. If you are more concerned about using HTML on the Web, check out Tidy's "Word-2000" config option! Of course Tidy does a good job on Word'97 files as well!

Tidy features in an article by Scott Nesbitt on webreview.com, and more recently on Dave Central's Best of Linux, and as tool of the month on Unix Review by Joe Brockmeier, who writes:

Missing quotes around attribute values are added

Tidy inserts quote marks around all attribute values for you. It can also detect when you have forgotten the closing quote mark, although this is something you will have to fix yourself.


Unknown/Proprietary attributes are reported

Tidy has a comprehensive knowledge of the attributes defined in the HTML 4.0 recommendation from W3C. This often allows you to spot where you have mistyped an attribute or value.


Proprietary elements are recognized and reported as such.

Tidy will even work out which version of HTML you are using and insert the appropriate DOCTYPE element, as per the W3C recommendations.


Tags lacking a terminating '>' are spotted

This is something you then have to fix yourself as Tidy is unsure of where the > should be inserted.

Mulitilingual tool
The Markup Validator receives 1M requests per day, and is only in English. Making it multiligual would make the tool easier to use for web developers and designers worldwide. Although this may be technically tricky (given the number of message/engine sources), the community would be very excited in participating in the translation effort.
Site-wide services->
The markup validator currently checks a single page. Some companion software (such as the log validator) could be made into a web service to provide crawling, batch validation, scheduled checks etc.
Check beyond markup->
This may be in the roadmap for Unicorn rather than the markup validator, but it fits in the "long-term" vision of developing the W3C Web Quality services. Checking of RDDL, RDFa, microformats and other rich markup are in scope. Many other checks could be added to the validators, such as:
- document cacheability
- spell checking
- semantic extraction
- accessibility evaluation

Most of our tools, and especially the "star" HTML validator, have a binary "valid/invalid" way of presenting their results. While this is useful for some, it tends to make people look away from the "big picture" of web quality. A new one-stop quality checker could help bring a paradigm shift by showing diverse aspects of web quality, while systematically suggesting solutions for every problem. This would involve working with designers to find ways to present aggregated quality information in a clear and positive manner.
