Harry Payne (1858 - 1927) along with his brother Arthur C.Payne produced many postcard designs of a military theme for Raphael Tuck & Sons and also for Gale & Polden. In addition in the 1880s, Harry also produced embossed scraps for the fine art publishers, Birn Brothers, again on a military theme. Although these were not postcards in the proper sense, they were of a very similar size and were a precursor to Payne and Birn Bros's eventual movement into the postcard business. There follows an example of Payne's work - a private of the East Lancashire Regiment from a postcard circa 1900:

Founded in Glasgow in 1903, Millar & Lang was a publisher of postcards depicting a wide variety of subjects, including landscapes, street scenes, comic cards and animals. They also used a wide variety of techniques. Most of their cards were published under the National Series name. Some scenes that were printed as black & white real photo postcards were used to create hand coloured collotypes. By the 1930’s many of the company's photo cards began to be hand coloured. In addition they published a series of line drawings by the artist Andrew Allan (1863 - 1940) in the New Colour-Crayon Process. In their later years the company moved to London. The company went out of business in 1941.

In 1866 James Gale opened a book shop in Chatham, Kent. In the early 1870's he had progressed to printing books and by 1877 he had taken on one Ernest Polden as an apprentice. In 1888 the pair had moved to Aldershot and had joined together as a limited partnership with an office in London. As befits the company's origins in Chatham and then Aldershot, most of the work it carried out was of a military nature. Their military links were further strengthened with the opening of a third office in Portsmouth in order to help capture business from the Royal Navy.

Moving into the twentieth century the company continued producing cards of a military theme, by now using the new technology of halftone lithography. Series produced at this time covered Admiral Nelson, Naval vessels and British Army Regiments. Even the view-cards produced by the company were military themed. Gale and Polden finally ceased trading in 1981 after 89 years in business.

The son of a Lincolnshire butcher, John Beagles was born in 1844. In 1881 he founded his photo publishing company. Later he became a printer and publisher of real photo postcards which, in the main, depicted stage and movie stars, boxers and other celebrities. Major stars of the late Victorian / Edwardian period, such as Dame Ellen Terry, Andrew Carnegie, Enrico Caruso and Harry Randall were depicted. The company also produced view cards in their Phototint series and some of the great Louis Wain's work via the set Matrimonial Cats, some of which were hand coloured.

John died in 1909, and his son continued to manage the business, by now a limited company. The business continued publishing pictures of actresses, street scenes, Palestine(!?) and military subjects until it was wound up on 18 July 1939.

One of the more long lived British postcard publishers, Harvey Barton & Son existed as a going concern between 1885 and 1960. Harvey Barton was a landscape photographer of some repute, one time president of the Bristol Camera Society. The company initially published its own hand coloured images of the landscape of south-west of England and later graduated to producing art reproductions. The company also published postcards under the Vistasound label - a novel idea which was a set of picture postcards that could be played as 45rpm records which were manufactured by the Hardy Record Manufacturing Company of London.

Originally a ribbon weaver, Thomas Stevens was born in Coventry in 1828. He learned his craft at Pears and Franklin in Upper Well Street. By 1854 he had managed to save enough to set himself up in business in Queen Street - eventually moving to Cox Street. Initially bookmarks were his stock-in-trade, although he soon expanded into making Valentine along with Christmas and Birthday cards. By the time of the Post Office's relaxation of the rules relating to postcards, the company was able to also move into this market also.

Thomas Stevens died in 1888 when the ownership of the business passed to his son, Thomas Inger Stevens. When he died in 1908 the business became a limited company. Production continued in Coventry up until 1940 when the factory was destroyed by German bombs.

Although I've never been (and consequently don't have the Blarney) my sister has and she tells me that this is a fine day out if you're in the area.

Well, until not so long ago I used to classify Ireland in the 'rare countries'...but now, one way or another, I got a number of postcards from there, so I could use them more often here :)

The card shows the Blarney Castle, which is situated 7 km from Cork City. The Castle is famous for its Stone, which has the traditional power of conferring eloquence on all who kiss it. The word "Blarney" has found its way into the English Language and has been described as pleasant talk, intended to deceive without offending. The famous Stone is set in the wall below the battlements, and to kiss it, one has to lean backwards (grasping the iron railing) from the parapet walk.

Yeah, nothing good comes easy ;)

Have a great day and see you soon hopefully!
