The Veterans' Service District of Hopkinton, Holliston, Ashland and Medway is currently seeking a full time (40 hours) Director of Veteran’s Services. This position will be supervised by the District Board in accordance with State (MGL Chapter 115) and Federal laws and regulations. Position assists and advises veterans and their beneficiaries regarding their entitled benefits and ensures that accurate records are maintained in compliance with State and Federal laws. The position is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his or her control. Using personal appearances, traditional and social media, the position is responsible for providing outreach and publicity for the services available to veterans of all ages. Ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, social services or a related field; with five years experience in social welfare, or a related field, with experience in the administration of Veterans benefits being most desirable; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidate will also have working knowledge of State, Federal and local veteran service laws, regulations, medical and financial assistance programs and their eligibility requirements. Candidate is also required to have a valid Driver’s License, possession of a reliable motor vehicle and must be an honorably discharged (DD-214 required) United States veteran, with wartime service as defined by clause Forty-Three of Section Seven of Chapter Four of Massachusetts Law. The Town of Ashland departments are currently preparing for its potential response to the storm that is projected for Sunday. Crews are prepping equipment and attending to areas that normally have problems during high wind and flooding situations. We have been working to store loose items such as barrels and outdoor furniture. You will also see that we will remove all our flags on Main Street and on Town buildings for the duration of the storm. We urge all residents to do the same in anticipation of what the storm may bring on Sunday. First and Second Quarter Real Estate and Personal Property tax bills for FY 2011 were mailed to Ashland property owners on Tuesday June 28, 2011. Each bill has two payment coupons to be returned with payments due on August 1st and November 1st 2011, respectively. Please contact the Collector’s office at 508-881-0100 ext. 621 if you have not received your bill. Property owners are reminded to allow ample time for mailing as payments are considered made when received by the Collector. A payment mailed on or before the due date, but received by the Collector after that date, is late and subject to interest charges. For efficient processing, it is recommended that taxpayers utilize the enclosed lockbox window envelope which directs payments to an automated processing center. Alternatively, payments may be made on-line at www.ashlandmass.com. For taxpayers who prefer to pay in person, it would be helpful to pay via check, payable to the Town of Ashland, for the exact amount due. |

Waushakum Pond in Ashland and Framingham, will be chemically treated to control nuisance aquatic vegetation on Monday, June 6th. The entire pond will be closed to all water uses, including; swimming, boating and fishing on the day of treatment only. Furthermore, use of the water for irrigation, livestock watering and drinking, will be restricted for 5 days, commencing on the day of treatment. Printed signs, outlining these water use restrictions, will be posted prior to treatment, along the pond’s shoreline. The work is being performed for the Town of Ashland, Department of Public Works and Town of Framingham, Conservation Commission, pursuant to permits (licenses) issued by MA DEP, Office of the Watershed Management and the Conservation Commission’s in both communities. The work is being performed under contract with Aquatic Control Technology, Inc., of Sutton, MA. |

Applicants are expected to have thorough knowledge related to enforcement, interpretation, and compliance with the Massachusetts State Building Code, the local zoning ordinance, and other applicable regulations. Duties include receiving and reviewing plans for building construction or alterations to determine compliance and keep records of all inspections and approved plans, conducting and reporting on inspections, investigating alleged violations, and issuing notices and orders to rectify illegal or unsafe conditions. NEW OPEN BURNING REGULATION:
To address recent changes in federal Air Quality Standards, the Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) now issues daily determinations about the suitability of conditions for open burning, based on monitoring of the atmosphere and weather. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recently tightened the National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ground-level ozone, and has also established a new standard for fine particles. While ground-level ozone or “smog” is a health concern primarily during the warm weather months, particle pollution – an airborne mixture of solids and liquid droplets often resulting from combustion – can pose year-round health risks, particularly for children, seniors, and people with asthma, other respiratory problems, and heart-related issues.
Massachusetts law allows open burning from January 15 to May 1 (except in 22 communities where the practice is prohibited). During this period, MassDEP is responsible for safeguarding the public from health risks associated with open burning on days when weather and wind conditions will not disperse smoke effectively. Massachusetts Fire Departments can help by issuing permits for open burning only on days when air quality is good, and weather/wind conditions are favorable for effective smoke dispersal. In this way, we can minimize the potential air pollution threat to people who are sensitive to smoke, and to the community at large.
