BRONX, NEW YORK, May 5- Save the Date for the upcoming 4th Annual Fair @ The Square, sponsored by the Westchester Square BID, Association of the Merchants & Business Professionals of Westchester Square Inc., Bronx Chamber of Commerce and the Bronx Council on the Arts, taking place Saturday, May 12, 2012, from 11am to 6pm in Westchester Square between Westchester Avenue and St. Raymond Avenue.

The purpose of this street festival is to promote the diversity in the Commerce, the Culture, and the Community of Westchester Square, all coming together to celebrate the "rebuilding of a great area for a great future." Westchester Square is one of the busiest areas in the Bronx, traveled through by over 80,000 commuters daily.

Last year's Fair was a tremendous success and featured thousands of participants throughout the day. We have expanded the celebration by including an all day concert series, art exhibits, a children's activities area, and hundreds of activities for all to enjoy.

Baseball in the Bronx

BRONX, NEW YORK, April 16- Now open is the month long “Baseball in the Bronx” exhibit at the Bronx Museum (1040 Grand Concourse, at 165th Street). The exhibit will feature rare photos, Yankee and other baseball memorabilia, talks, book signings, a screening of the film Sugar (2008), and fan favorite (former Yankee) Roy White, among other famous people who may stop by at any time. The first thousand visitors to the exhibition will get a pack of free Topps baseball cards. This one-month-only exhibition ends May 13, 2012. “There’s never been anything like this,” said Dr. Cary Goodman, Executive Director of the 161st Street BID, which organized the exhibition. “Visitors will be able to view Joe DiMaggio’s bat, Elston Howard’s Golden Glove, and see photographs of the Negro League World Series at Yankee Stadium. They can meet a movie star, talk to an ESPN broadcaster and learn about the history of Bronx baseball.” Last year Dr. Goodman and the 161st Street BID had a week long exhibit at the Bronx Museum that featured memorabilia from the “Negro Leagues.”

Brian Richards, Museum Curator for the New York Yankees, is the show’s curator. Private collections from Fordham University, The Bronx County Historical Society, New York University, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, and artifacts provided by Mrs. Elston (Arlene) Howard and Mr. Ricky Martinez will be on display.

The Bronx Clergy Task force and the New York City Police Department will be hosting an Immigration and Health Fair on April 18th from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Hutchinson Metro Center (near Calvary Hospital) 1200 Walters Place in the auditorium. The guest speaker is Andrea J. Quarantillo, District Director for NYC US Citizenship & Immigration Services, US Homeland Security.

This can be anything from gathering liter, painting benches, sweeping up or whatever else may be needed in the park to make it look better. The Parks Department supplies the brooms, paint, and plastic bags, all that you have to supply is a little loving care and work.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver would like to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50. There is much support for this, but the Republican controlled State Senate opposes the move saying that raising the minimum wage is a “Job Killer.”

It appears that Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has “Star Power,” as actress Scarlett Johansson hosted a fundraiser for (what she described as) “The Future Mayor of New York City”, adding that he would “Take back City Hall.” This was the third such fundraiser by Ms. Johansson which drew about 600 people. Speaking like a candidate in 2013 Stringer outlines his “Take back City Hall” campaign, that will be a progressive inclusive campaign in all communities, to bring people back together to realize their dreams. Stringer ended his speech with a jab at Mayor Bloomberg, and said when asked that he is raising money to run in 2013. Manhattan BP Scott Stringer has not announced just what citywide office he will be running for, but odds are that he will be running for mayor in 2013.

BRONX, NEW YORK, April 16- The Moscow Festival Ballet returns to Lehman Center for the Performing Arts for the second time this season, after a production of Swan Lake, with a fully-staged production of the timeless classic fairytale Cinderella on Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 4pm.

BRONX, NEW YORK, APRIL 14- Iconic recording artist and songwriter Smokey Robinson will be appearing in concert at the Concert Hall of the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday night, April 28. Songs written and performed by the legendary performer during the past half-century have sold in the tens of millions.

The 72-year-old superstar formed a singing group in his native Detroit when he was 15 years of age. Five years later, with the group now named the Miracles and Robinson its lead vocalist, the recording “Shop Around” became their first million selling disc for the recently formed Motown Records.

For the next dozen years, Robinson and his group were regulars in the Top 40. Hit followed hit as the group made appearances across the nation and overseas. Among the biggest sellers were “Tears of a Clown,” “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “I Second that Emotion” and “Going to a Go-Go.”

Robinson, a prolific songwriter, also penned big sellers for his colleagues on Motown, “My Guy” by Mary Wells, “Don’t Mess with Bill” by the Marvellettes, and “My Girl” by the Temptations. Robinson has written more than 4,000 songs.

Robinson departed from the Miracles in 1972 to launch his solo career and to fulfill his other duties as Motown Vice-President.

As the years passed and Robinson aged, he used his tenor voice effectively on standards and gospel as well performing his popular million sellers.

The honors for a lengthy and outstanding career in music were received by Robinson in the past two decades. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a soloist in 1987. The Miracles and several other veteran groups are being inducted into the HOF this month. Two years later, he was inducted into the Songwriter’s HOF.

In more recent years, Robinson has received even more honors. He received the Grammy Living Legend Award. The NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, was a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2006 and was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009.
