Revolt Fitness: Week 2

Last week marked my second full week of my Revolt Fitness challenge, and I'm happy to report that my scale and tape measure are still being nice to me, with a weight loss this week of 2 pounds. That, to me, is awesome considering I fudged up the schedule this week like it was my job.

I stuck to the diet and workout plan strictly from Monday to Wednesday. Thursday however I was at a series of events for work from 7 am to 7:30 p.m. and I couldn't bring any of my prepackaged meals. I tried to maintain composure and "eat right" but I did cave in to a cookie and 2 glasses of white wine throughout the day. Friday was slightly better, until Brewfest, a beer tasting festival, where I indulged in nearly 15 tiny cups of "empty calories," followed by a rich dinner, and zero time to work out. Then of course Sunday was Mother's Day, so during the morning brunch I inevitably took in too much.

BUT despite all that, this week I lost 2 pounds and my measurements are beginning to shrink! This program really works if I can screw up so much and still lose anything. Now that Detox Week is over, the weekly diet plans allow a few more liberties, and so far I have enjoyed all the meals. I tried to photograph my nice lunch (salmon, wild rice, salad, and asparagus) but Earl had other plans. He is such a doll: distracted more by attention than fish!

What I love about Revolt is the simplicity, as I said last week, but I simply have to reiterate. I enjoy the ease of use of the workout and meal regiments. I could spend hours perusing fitness magazines, recipe websites, Youtube, and Pinterest looking for workouts and meals I like; instead, Revolt Fitness puts everything I need in one place, including meal plans with recipes and new workout videos daily. For a low monthly fee, users can access the site and the helpful Facebook community.

What was different this week was my tolerance for junk. While I had a little extra on Friday and was fine, I tried to have a big pasta dinner on Sunday (I took a free day despite my lapses, bad me!) and was NOT feeling well afterward. I didn't believe the people who'd gone through these weeks before me that my food desires would actually change, but since I've started, I find myself wanting to graze less, craving healthier, lighter-feeling foods, and to boot, I am never hungry!

This week is Week 3, and in my book, make it count week. I will be in Costa Rica on the beach in less than a week, so this is my time to shine! My challenge will be keeping up my progress on vacation. I won't have the meal plans but I will at least have more knowledge to choose my foods appropriately.

Bust: -.5" (sad, but the jiggle in the middle is not worth the jiggle up top)

Neck: -.5" (didn't see this one coming at all...)

The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center is trying to save this plot of land, known as Coogan Farm, and has big plans for it, including a farm-to-table professional kitchen in what's now an abandoned historic building, and an amphitheater. Every week they offer tours and after driving by a pair of giant cows and (my favorite) a dilapidated building, who knows how many times, we finally decided to stop by. I will be going back for more photos, stay tuned! It gets much more awesome.

Came upon this cemetery in the middle of the woods while hiking at Barn Island, Stonington. Some of the headstones date back to the early 1800s. It is miles into the woods behind a large stone wall- seemed like a pretty cool find! Wonder who plants the flowers...

Revolt Fitness: Week 1

This week marked the first official week of my Revolt Now Fitness. This couldn't have come at a more opportune time. Unfortunately, with no baby weight to blame, I am at the heaviest, and potentially most unhealthy I've ever been. Revolt is about fighting back against the "before." For me, my wake up call was a charity gala that I helped plan, and the night of the event, put on a dress that fit me like a dream last summer to find out that I had become a marshmallow. That evening I was voluntold to model an auction item, pearl bracelets, and parade around with that stupid rolly polly look. Not thrilled. Then this picture surfaced, and I'd had it.

Not a fan of that round purple tummy. Pretty sure that dress was suddenly so tight you can see my belly button.

So Revolt came at the most opportune time. It is a great fitness plan designed by Nichole Hunstman, a certified personal trainer, that provides 6 week "uprisings," soon to be monthly instead, of diet and exercise plans in a comprehensive website. The diets are varied enough for my tastes, and the workouts are dynamic and constantly changing. There is a new workout video posted nearly every day, and they are easy to follow and adjust for your level. Nichole is the cutest personal trainer, and she makes the workouts fun. Sometimes her daughter peeks in while she is filming, which adds an air of attainable motivation, since you really can do the workouts right from your own home. Maybe someday I'll be a gutsy gym bunny but that day...is not today.

The first week was Detox week, aimed to cleanse the body of unhealthy sugars. The goal of the diet plan is to get everything made in advance so there are no excuses to stray from it. This was my first night divvying up salads and making SO MANY hard boiled eggs. Thank goodness I like egg whites, because there is no shortage of them this week. If I had to report on one thing about the diet, it's that I was never hungry. Although it was a low calorie intake overall each day, the meals are full of protein and timed so that I never felt quite empty.

WHAT I LIKE: So simple! Revolt is the perfect program when you don't know where to start. It provides EVERYTHING you need, step by step, laid out in an easy to follow program. By the end of the week, I felt cleaner and stronger. I actually doubted that I was losing weight, since I never believe I've lost weight, but my boyfriend said he could tell and the scale agreed: I lost 4.2 pounds in 6 days. My measurements were either inaccurate when I measured at first or stayed the same, but hey, I like my scale this week at least.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE: Waaaah, pasta is a banned food! I could survive on rigatoni and butter if I had to, seriously. So that was a tiny slap in the face, but every Saturday is a free day so I can get a little fix then. This Saturday I had pasta and vodka sauce, and actually kept the portion pretty reasonable.

So every week I will be chronicling my exploits along this journey. I've decided it's high time for an ass kicking, and who better to do it than myself?

Charity Chat: Asylum Access

Imagine that you've been forced to leave your home country for complete and unending fear of persecution, torture, or death. You've brought your children and whatever belongings you could to an unfamiliar territory. You don't speak the language, you don't have any "papers" or money, or even access to your bank account. Do you think you could enter a courtroom alone, full of unfamiliar faces and difficult language barriers, and convince a judge that you deserve to stay?

That's where Asylum Access is there to help. It is a non-profit organization working to make refugee rights a reality in first countries of refuge. With the goal of empowering genuine refugees, Asylum Access provides legal and community aid to prevent anyone from ever having to return to a dangerous life situation.

The Facts:

A refugee is a person who "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted...is outside the country of his/her nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country or return there..." This is distinct from someone who chooses to move for a better life or more job opportunities.

Most refugees remain within Africa, Asia, and South America, having fled to countries adjacent to or nearby what was once their home nation. Refugees are entitled to rights in theory (read: constitution), but are often denied basic human rights in practice.

The average stay in a refugee camp is 17 YEARS, and more than half of all refugees are children. This means that children need an education and parents and adults need to work, maintain and learn new skills, and provide for themselves and their families. A much more effective and long-lasting solution than food and humanitarian aid in a camp is needed.

Taking Action:

Asylum Access is the only international organization working to make refugee rights a reality in first countries of refuge. Using a unique combination of five integrated strategies, Asylum Access provides grassroots assistance and changes the legal landscape for refugees and their host communities. Their work progresses the traditional approach of humanitarian handouts to a sustainable solution that gives refugees the tools to organize their own lives and support themselves.

Goals for the Future:

In its first five years, Asylum Access impacted over 1,000,000 refugees through successful

policy advocacy and strategic litigation efforts. Our individualized legal assistance and community legal empowerment directly assist over 5,000 refugees per year across all three offices in Ecuador, Thailand and Tanzania. Asylum Access hopes to increase the number of people they help.

Asylum Access seeks to expand in the future by developing a Refugee Rights Toolkit,

so refugees can research and learn about their human rights, and so other organizations and

volunteer legal advocates can replicate our work. By 2015 we plan to set up offices in three

additional countries.

How to Help:

We all know the saying "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." But Asylum Access executive director, Emily Arnold-Fernandez, explains the difficulty refugees face: "Our poor people turn to us and say that they already know how to fish, but they're not allowed to use the ponds near them. So, we're opening up the ponds to help them feed themselves.”

Asylum Access is located in Ecuador, Tanzania, and Thailand, so the best way for people from our area to help is to donate. EVERY donation matters!

I totally believe that the world would be a better place if the people who ran it were happier. Life satisfaction is legitimately linked to many aspects of a person's thoughts and actions, and happy people make more compassionate, moral, and intelligent decisions.

I'd like to be happier overall. Who wouldn't? More specifically, I would like to be more connected to the people around me (or at least the ones I like). With my friends spread around the northeast and the country, and my schedule being all over the place in addition to working full time, staying and feeling together can be tough.
