Nights in Bengkulu along Tabot Festival

Night of "Tabot Besanding" (Tabots Gathering)

Along the tabot festival in Bengkulu, the night is becoming brighter, more colorful and crowded of visitors. This is because there is always something new, something different in each night along those ten nights of Tabot Festival. If you lose one of them, you cannot find it again in other night until next year festival.

I my self missed some nights which i found out later i just missed some good event such as dol (big traditional drum) contest, menjara (visiting tabot groups and doing a dol contest at the visiting group place), lanterns contest and many others. But, at some nights that i attended, i really entertained with those colorful, bright and crowdy night where ten of thousands visitors around Bengkulu gathered in one place in the city of Bengkulu.

But even i did not attend the dol contest at night, i was a little bit entertained by the performance of one group at the closing day of Tabot festival before they discharge the tabot to the place called Kuaro Bela. The performance of this group was taken at the front house of Bengkulu Province Hall.

The local dancing contest is one among many events that takes place on Tabot Festival in Bengkulu Indonesia 2011. This contest is joined by many Bengkulu dance groups. Theme of the dance performed by those groups in this contest is related to the tabot ceremony background. The contest was held from November 28 - 29 night of 2011.The performers were amazing. The dancing were ornamented with the amazing Bengkulu percussion music - The Dol- as its music background. The next amazing contest is Dol (music percussion from Bengkulu) contest which will be held on December 2 or 3. Tabot festival in Bengkulu Indonesia

Once every year of arabic calendar, Tabot festival is held in the city of Bengkulu Indonesia from 1st to 10th day of its first month (Muharram). On this year (2011) this event will be held on November 27 to December 6. This festival is so attractive. In ten days in Bengkulu city, there are different rituals will be held to complete the ceremony of Tabot every day. The festival would also feature performing arts, markets, craft fairs, and various competitions such as decorative wagon, Dol (big local drum) contest, regional dance contest, and various other arts events.

It would be very joyful if you could attend all cultural events in those ten days. But if you only has a few days visits, i reccomend you to attend the last two days of the festival, that is on 5 and 6 of December 2011. On those last two days, thousands of people from all around Bengkulu, local tourists and international tourists will be gathered to watch the beatiful and colorful displays of Tabot.

On December 5, tabots from all around Bengkulu will be gathered and concentrated in one place near Tapak Paderi . The next day, at noon of the last day (December 6), all those colorful tabot will be brought by foot to its final destination in Kuaro Bela, a place with a distance about 4 km from Tapak Paderi. It is like the pharade of Tabots on that day.

A tabot is mainly consist of a tower structure with the colorful ornaments decorated all around this tower. The structure is usually made by bamboo, rattan and wooden beam. The covering ornaments are made from color and glitter papers, artificial flowers, golden strings, fabrics and other colorful ornamental goods. Some arabic written in golden color usually also displayed at tabot cover.

Tabot is also equipped with wagon on its base in order to make it movable. Some of tabots also ornamented with one big winged horse with human head doll. I think this doll is represent bouraq, a vehicle that was used by prophet Muhammad SAW in Isra’ Mi’raj event. The height of tabots are from 3 meters up to 10 meters. Because at this heigth it is taller than many objets those crossing the road around the area, so the tabot makers engineered their top of tabot to make it enable to flip at the half part of its top.

Tabot festival is believed to be the part of Shi'ah ritual to commemorate the death of prophet Muhammad SAW grand sons - Hasan and Hussin. Hasan and Hussin were killed in the Battle of Karbala (now in Iraq) on 10 Muharram in the year 61 Hijriah (681 AD). The name of Tabot originates from the Arabic word of Tabut which means wooden box or case to enclose something holy in it (the book of Taurat). But, even if it is really the part of shi’ah ritual in Bengkulu, the shi’ah followers are only a few in numbers in Bengkulu.

By the way, its just my opinion that the tabot events is part of many Bengkulu culture heritage which is connected to the importance of gathering people in large numbers in one place at the imperialism era around 18th century. It was a mean of our founding fathers to communicate and to tell to people of Bengkulu at that time how sad it is to lose the one they really love caused by disintegration, so don’t ever let it happen to our country. So, i think this was their way to ask people to struggle for independence at that time. Maybe...

Preparing the traditionanl drum (dol) for contest in Menjara procession

There are some events which attracting people to come at night time in tabot festival. One of them is the the dol contest among tabot groups in the procession called "Menjara". Dol is a traditional music instrument from Bengkulu-Indonesia. It is a typical of percussion instrument which shaped like a big drum. Dol is made of wood which is pierced in the middle and then covered with cow husk. Its diameter is about 70 - 125 cm, and its beater appliance has 5 cm in diameter and 30 cm in length. The way of using it is by lapping it. Dol is the official instrument to accompany the Tabot event. More about dol you can view in my older post here.

Menjara event will be held at 6th and 7th day of tabot festival. This event usually starting by preparing the Dols which will be used in contest by heating them. After all the preparation complete, groups of tabots will visit other groups to go on contest. The sound of this contest is very amazing.

Other events which will be held at night are various cultural competition to accompany the tabot festival such as regional dance contest, dol instrument contest and others. These competition are not part of the ritual, but they are being held to participate in displaying the richness of cultural heritage of Bengkulu along the festival.

Animal with the World's Largest Weapon

If we compare the size of the body and its weapon from an animal, such as comparing between the rooster body with its spurs, rhino or deer with its horns or elephant with its tusks, it can be seen that the size of the weapons they have relatively much smaller than their body size. But for fiddler crab, the size of its claw is much larger than its body size. So we can state that this animal if compared to its body size has the largest weapon size of all animals in the world.

The Fiddler crabs those are presented here i found in an intertidal mangrove forests around Pulau Baai Port of Bengkulu in the city of Bengkulu Indonesia. Male of fiddler crabs has a single enlarged claw, while female has two small feeding claws. Fiddler crab feeds by scraping the surface sediment up in its small claws, transferring it to the mouth where the complex mouth parts sift out the organic matter. Because males has only one small, feeding claw, it feeds at half the rate of the female. It therefore has to spend about double the time feeding than female do.

Fiddler crabs are named because of the extreme difference in the size of the claws of the male, with the larger claw resembling a fiddle. Other theory says that the name is coming from the feeding of the males, where the movement of the small claw from the ground to its mouth resembles the motion of a someone moving a bow across a fiddle (the large claw).

A fiddler crab, sometimes known as a calling crab. The large second claw of the male fiddler crab is known as a secondary sexual characteristic and is used to attract a mate during the breeding season as well as to protect territories. The male crab will stand by the entrance to the burrow waving the larger claw in an effort to attract a female.

There are approximately 100 species of semi-terrestrial marine crabs which make up the genus Uca.As members of the family Ocypodidae, fiddler crabs are most closely related to the ghost crabs of the genus Ocypode. This entire group is composed of small crabs – the largest being slightly over two inches across.

Like all crabs, fiddler crabs shed their shells as they grow. If they have lost legs or claws during their present growth cycle a new one will be present when they molt. If the large fiddle claw is lost, males will develop one on the opposite side after their next molt. Newly molted crabs are very vulnerable because of their soft shells. They are reclusive and hide until the new shell hardens.

Around our intertidal mangrove forest around Bengkulu City (near port of Bengkulu - Pulau Baai port) there are few place where this fiddler crab can be found. But even in a small place, they gathered in a huge numbers, i can found maybe hundreds of it in a small place.

Males and females live intermixed and each individual has its own burrow and a small area of surface sediment around it. The burrow is extremely important. It is a refuge during high tide, and during low tide it is a source of water for keeping the gills wet, it is an escape from predators, it is the site of mating and incubation. The space around the burrow is used for feeding and courting.

An interesting fact about this animal is, that prostitution not only happen to human, but also to animal. A report from CBSNEWS state that a research in Australia had found that fiddler crab trade favor for sex !. Wow. Researchers from The Australian National University in Canberra found that male fiddler crabs will happily defend a female neighbor against intruders - partly because the females will dole out sex in return.

The study by Richard Milner, Professor Michael Jennions and team leader Dr Patricia Backwell of the Research School of Biology at ANU looked at how female fiddler crabs “ without the large claw that the males are armed with “ go about protecting their territories. The results of the study are published in Biology Letters.

The researchers found that even though the female crabs are physically no match for attacking males they do have something that can work to their favor: offering sexual favors to neighboring males in exchange for protection. These sexual offerings lead to neighborhood coalitions, where a male crab will protect female neighbors from other homeless males seeking a new territory.

A Close Up views of the newest blooming of Rafflesia Arnoldii Flower From Bengkulu-Indonesia

This is the newest bloom of Rafflesia Arnoldii flower in Indonesia. This flower is starting to bloom on November 9th and estimated to last on November 14th 2011. This time the size of the flower is much smaller than October blooms which is 100 cm diameter, this flower is only 80 cm diameter. It also from different spot of the previous bloom, separated about 50 m. The location of this flower is about 300m down the jungle from the asphalted road 52 km from the city of Bengkulu in the Bukit Daun Protected Forest of Bengkulu Indonesia.

In this post, I treat the uploaded images a little bit different in size. They are using 1024x768 pixel rather than i usually use the 640x480 pixel, so maybe it will affect the speed page when viewing this post.

In this post, i will show you my beloved readers with a close up view of Rafflesia arnoldii in order to make you feel how amazing of this flower the same like i do (except for the smell of course, i cannot show you that :D), and hope that maybe some botanist reader will put an attention about the future of this plant. It is really, in extremely dangerous extinction.

Rafflesia arnoldii is a typical parasitic flower. It has no visible leaves, roots, or stem. It survives by attaching itself to a host plant (the Tetrastigma vine) and leeching water and nutrients. As the plant blooms, its flowers burst through the bark of the host plant root.

The picture below show the close up view of perigone lobe, diaphragm, windows, disk and processes. You can see also that there are two actors of the pollination - the flies, which attracted to come to the flower because of the foul smell of rotting meat from inside of the flower.

The image below is the aperture of diaphragm. Diaphragm is the half upper part of the perigone tube Most of inner surface of perigone tube is occupied by the induments or glandular hairs called ramenta. It is ramenta which responsible for the unpleasant aroma of this beautiful flower which produced from ramenta's special compound recipe to attract flies to come.

On the upper part of the tube near the diaphragm aperture, the hairs are being replaced by white dots, called windows. Well, for me it still leave me with the curiosity why the botanist called it windows as i do not see any window in there. According to botanist, these windows were believed to be resemblance of clouds in the sky to trick or guide flies out of the tube after they spent some time in there pollinating the flower.

In the middle of the tube lies central column with projectiles on top of the disc. Many inexperienced naturalists mistakenly identify these projectiles as styles but these are not. Acting as heat dissipitating surface, it was called processes by botanists and have nothing to do with styles which was reduced and appears as a sticky ring beneath the disc.

The close up view of processes is shown below. Well, i don't understand either why the botanist called it processes. This word is plural of process, so, the thing resembles beautiful fairy tower is called process.

Well, it is embarassing that the journey to the inner part of Rafflesia arnoldii has to end before we enter the most important part of Rafflesia arnoldii flower - the pollination part. It is lies below the disk, and i do not have a special camera to capture it, neither it is not allowed to dissect the blooming Rafflesia arnoldii flower.

Instead, i add some images of the host plant of Rafflesia arnoldii- the tetrastigma. Tetrastigma is a genus of plants in the grape family, Vitaceae. The plants are vines that climb with tendrils and have palmately compound leaves.

Not all the new bulb of Rafflesia arnoldii succeeded to grow to a flower. One spot in Rafflesia arnoldii habitat at Bukit Daun Protected Forest of Bengkulu Indonesia is known to be the failed spot of rafflesia arnoldii. Even there are many new rafflesia arnoldii bulb those emerge around a tetrastigma plant on that spot, they all failed to grow to a blossom flower. The disease of Rafflesia arnoldii is not known until now. It is elongated the list of unknown thing about Rafflesia arnoldii.

The mistery of rafflesia arnoldii is still abundant even it has been discovered for about two centuries now. For me. even i live in Bengkulu, i never heard anyone see rafflesia arnoldii seed which resulted from the pollination. Only i have seen is the seed of titan arum, another giant flower from Bengkulu Indonesia. You may try surfing the google to find the image of rafflessia arnoldii seed. Can you find it?. Is it true that the rafflesia arnoldii produce seed?. Is it true that rafflesia arnoldii parasite?. Why only tetrastigma can be the host?. Well, i am not a botanist, so i leave to the reader to explore more about rafflesia arnoldii - the largest flower in the world.

Two Cultivated Amorphophallus Titanum Successively Bloomed Outside their Habitat In Bengkulu Indonesia

Bengkulu Forest Botanical Garden of Bengkulu Forestry Service has successfully flowered two cultivated Amorphopallus titanum (Titan Arum) in Bengkulu City apart from of their habitat in Kepahiang Regency of Bengkulu Province.The first flower bloomed on October 28, located at the Bengkulu Forest Botanical Garden about 10 km from city central. The size of this flower measured to be 2.80 m tall. Meanwhile, the second flower bloomed today (November 8) located at the office backyard of Bengkulu Forest Botanical Garden about 4 km from city central and has the size of 2.00 m tall.

According to the officer of Bengkulu Forest Botanical Garden of Bengkulu Forestry Service Mrs. Elsy Nila Rita, those cultivated amorphophallus titanum were parts of 25 amorphophallus titanums which cultivated outside their habitat as the effort to initiate the development of Rare Flower Garden in Bengkulu Forest Botanical Garden. Those plants were cultivated using amorphopallus titanum tubers which were removed from their habitat in Kepahiang regency. The tuber size was ranging from 6 kg to 105 kg. The first flower bloom was from a 105 kg tuber, meanwhile the second was from 30 kg tuber. All the tubers of these bloomed flower were cultivated on 28 June 2011 (4.5 month ago).

Amorphophallus titanum is known to be the largest unbranched inflorescence flowering plant in the world. Its native is from the rainforest of western part of Sumatera Indonesia (Kepahiang Regency of Bengkulu Province is the most renowned place for its habitat). It is discovered by Italian Botanist Odoardo Beccari in Sumatera in 1878.

In my previous article about Rafflesia arnoldii, i have mentioned that Rafflesia arnoldii is the world's largest flower. This is the time i want to show why titan arum is not the world's largest flower even if by the looks it seem that this flower is much bigger then rafflesia arnoldii.

In amorphophallus titanum, the thing looks similar to an obelisk which grow from the base of flower is called the spadix. Meanwhile , the large, frilly-edged, leafy skirt coloring maroon upside and whiter green downside enclosing the spadix is the spathe.

At the base of the spadix, you can see below that there are numbers of the real Amorphophallus titanum flower. It can be hundreds or thousands in number, but you see...they are all small. Those small flowers are attached at the base of a very tall unbranched inflorescence called spadix than covered by that beautiful large maroon spathe forming a giant looks flower to hide the fact that they are small !. The Great giant Amorphophallus titanum flower actually is small!. That's why we call Raflessia Arnoldii is the largest flower in the world. But lucky for me, these two flowers are native to Bengkulu rainforest, so that i can see them both when they blooms as long as the local news report it.

Amorphophallus Titanum is rarely set seeds because the female flowers open first, but by the time the male florets reproducing pollens, the female flowers are no longer receptive. In order to pollinating, the female flowers need the pollens from other amorphophalus titanum male florets which has almost similarly bloom time.

Six Years Old Girl Got Killed by Sumatran Tiger at Bengkulu Indonesia

Gallery of Bengkulu-Indonesia I A devastating news comes from a small village in Kepahiang regency Bengkulu Indonesia. A Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is reported by the local newspaper had atacked and killed a six years old girl named Fitriani in his parents' plantation on Saturday morning November 5th. The attacking of this wild tiger happened while this poor young girl were playing with her brother out side her parent’s hut in her father’s plantation.

The father of the victim named Yudin told that the size of the tiger which attacked his daughter was about the size of local cow. He estimated that the lenght of this tiger was about 120 cm length. With the tears in his eyes he told that at that morning his daughter along with his son was following their mother to go to their plantation. This plantation located at the forest area in Kepahiang regency. As they arrived to the plantation, his wife then doing some usual farming activities behind their hut while her children playing ball at the front of the hut.

The tiger suddenly appeared from the woods and immediately attacking the victim. Her brother screamed at her mother and ran to the hut. Their mother tried to ran after the tiger, but she failed. Along with her son, she then ran to nearby village asking for help.Not long after, the police came and visited the location of attacking. Along with the police, the father of the victim also searched for the tiger. But they cannot find the tiger, the only they found was the dead body of the victim about 50 meters from the hut. The left leg of the victim was missing that probably had eaten by the tiger. The victim body then were evacuated immediately and buried at the nearby village”.

Supartono, Head of Administration of Bengkulu Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) confirmed that he has accepted the report about the girl who was attacked and murdered by the Sumatran Tiger. He said the report the death of a child due to tiger attack is received from BKSDA officers of Kepahiang resort. "It happened on Saturday (5 / 11) morning when the victim were playing with her brother outside the hut and a tiger suddenly appeared from the woods and immediately attacking the victim," he explained.

Supartono said that BKSDA has taken some actions pertaining this matter. He said Forestry Police were investigating whether or not the hut was located inside the Bukit Daun protected forest. If the attack occurred outside the park boundaries, the tiger would be tracked down and relocated.

The conflict between human with tiger is getting intense in Bengkulu lately. On September 9th of this year a farmer were found dead in his coffee plantation in Southern Bengkulu regency caused by tigger attack. In 2011 there are more than seven cases of conflict between humans and tigers had been reported in five regency in Bengkulu Province namely Lebong, Seluma, North Bengkulu, Kaur and Southern Bengkulu. As a result of the conflict there were two people became victims and two tigers were forced to evacuate and translocated toTambling Conservation Park, Lampung.

Sungai Suci Beach is located in the Village Pasar Pedati, District of Pondok Kelapa, at the Central Bengkulu Regency. Central Bengkulu Regency is one between 10 Regencies of Bengkulu Province, it is different from Bengkulu City. The location of Sungai Suci beach is about 12 km from Bengkulu City central to the north of Bengkulu Province.

Sungai Suci beach is characterized by its hilly topography which directly in contact with the sea. This typical hilly beach such as Sungai Suci beach creating a vast panorama to the sea that meet the need to relaxing our mind. This scenery is becoming more beautiful at the afternoon when the sun about to set at the edge of Indonesian Ocean. That's why the tourists are very interested in visiting this beach.

Just like the other Bengkulu beaches, we can find many small traditional stores which sell typical sea food and drink especially coconut drink here. The owner of the stores provide many small huts for the customer to eat, drink and enjoying the beach at the hillside of the beach.

When the tide is low, the visitors are enable to step down to get closer to the sea water and touch the splashes of sea water which break at the hillside edges.

The waves those strike the hillside, had made the ornamental surface of the hillside edge, some irregularities may shape a resemblance to a familiar objects such as the mummy face below.

This is not an everyday scenery in Bengkulu city beach. The coral reef around Bengkulu City especially the northern part of Pantai Panjang Beach to Sumur Melele beach Bengkulu Indonesia sometimes seem to emerge to the sea surface caused by the low tide that comes lower than usual. The scenery of emerging coral reef, not only bring the fascinating panorama of Bengkulu beach, but also attracting people to go to the beach searching some sea product such as oysters, crabs and shells.

All the images in this post is taken around midday at Sumur Melele beach when this lower tide happens.

The coral reef of Sumur Melele beach is interesting, not only because it is very wide, but also the reef high is almost the same until the edge of it at the sea. It gives a flat passage to the sea. Walking on this reef make us feel like walking on the water of the sea. The coral reef of Sumur Melele beach is about 300 meters wide, so we can go as far as 300 meters toward the sea.

On this reef, people can see the under water scenery around the reef, its clear and has many kinds of sea species there. Some of sea species sometimes is trapped at the small pond like at the reef surface such as crab, sea star, shell and others. It gives a joyful activity on that reef, not only for children but also for adult.

When the reef emerged, the beach looks wide, almost all people who pass the street at the side of this beach will stop by and go down to the beach to walk on the coral reef. If they do not find anything to bring with after walking around this reef, at least they will feel fresh and relaxed after looking at the scenery and the coral life.

And, the most of it, it is really bring the fishing hobbyist to fish here, at coral reef of Sumur Melele Beach Bengkulu Indonesia...

I see a group of around 20 birds flying and finding their food around my town’s beach recently. Seem to me this kind of bird is unusual, because i never met this kind of bird before since i was a kid. Then i surfed the internet to find out what kind of this bird is. It amazed me to know that this bird is the whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus). What makes me amazed is how these birds travel such a long way (7200 miles !) from their home to the place they never knew with just that long bended bill and long leg as their only capital to travel.

Well that question is too "human" i think. True. The real thing that happens,is that these birds actually are on their migrating season. Their home town are in the cold area in earth, the Arctic in the eastern and western hemispheres such as the subarctic of North America, Europe and Asia as far as south as Scotland. They breed in summer, than migrate to avoid winter.

The whimbrel bird (Numineus phaeopus) looks very much like Curlews and have similarly down-curved bills but they are smaller, with shorter bills and obvious stripes through the crown. It is mainly greyish brown above and whitish below. It uses its long, down-curved bill to probe deep in the sand of beaches for its food. Unfortunately, i didn’t hear their sound while i was watching them.

From Wikipedia, it stated that this bird is a migratory species and being a coastal bird during migration. It also statet that this bird is doing wintering on coasts in south Africa, South America, south Asia into Australia and southern North America. I didn’t notice word Indonesia especially Bengkulu there.

The existence of these bird leave me with the curiousity, why some of these birds are here. Did scientists never notice that our town - Bengkulu – Indonesia – is one of their migrating route or other wise, are these birds actually changing their migration route or even more are they losing their route?. Will they find their way back home and breed in this summer?. Because Bengkulu is separated so long way from their home at the arctic. It is about 7200 miles distance !.

The interesting facts about this bird are as follows:

The Whimbrel is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.
This bird is an object of studies by several organization. The Center for Conservation Biology at the College of William and Mary and The Nature Conservancy in Virginia has deployed 9.5 gram satellite transmitters to track whimbrels from Virginia to the breeding grounds in Northern Canada and Alaska.
One whimbrel, named Winnie, completed a nonstop flight of more than 5,000 km (3,200 miles) in 146 hours to Mackenzie River Delta, Northwest Territories, Canada, on her way to breeding grounds in Alaska. (http://www.ccb-wm.org/programs/migration/Whimbrel/whimbrel.htm)

Well, from those fact, i am feeling lucky to have met this amazing bird, and i do really hope to see these birds stop by again next year and bring a more numbers of group member with them. I hope so.

Sumur Melele beach is situated between Pantai Panjang beach and Tapak Paderi beach in city of Bengkulu Indonesia. This beach is about 1km from the city central of Bengkulu. This beach is a unique beach at Bengkulu city, because it has more coral reef than other part of Bengkulu City beach.

The advantage for the fishing hobbyists to go fishing in this beach is, they can search for the bait when the coral reef merges on the surface. Besides, some crabs or shells are trapped at the small pond formed on the coral reef.

Furcraea foetidas those were blooming at University of Bengkulu, 2007

This is a kind of a spectacular ornament plants. It is because not only it takes a larger area of your garden, but also, when its bloom, it will produce a very tall flower's stalk (inflorescence). The flower' s stalk of this plant can reach 40 ft (12 meter) high !!!.

This plant is called Furcraea Foetida. Maybe the familiar name of this plant is mauritius hemp or century plant. You may thought this is an agave such as we call it in Bengkulu - Indonesia, but you're quite not right. It's true that this plant is belong to the subfamily of agavoideae, but they are in different genus. The subfamily of agavoideae has more than 23 genera, agave and furcraea foetida are two of those 23 genera.

Both agave and furcraea foetida really looks alike, so it is hard to distinguish one from another. The primary biologically different is their distinct flower shape (filiform versus bulbous) and generally Furcraeas are basically large Agaves (though there are a few Agaves larger than the largest Furcraeas) They are non-suckering rosette plants with thick, stiff, succulent leaves. Some form tall stems while others remain stemless.

There are two kinds of furcraea those grow in Bengkulu - Indonesia, namely furcraea foetida and furcraea variegata. The different between those two can be seen at the picture above. The variegata is the yellow furcraea foetida.

The variegated furcraea has more attractive color, the dominating color of this plant is yellow stripped with white and green. Meanwhile, for non variegated, the color is green or light green. Even tough, both species have common features on leaves shape and size. Both are sword-shaped, 1.5- 2 m long at the longest leave, 10- 20 cm broad at their widest point, narrowing to 6-7 cm broad at the leaf base, have a sharp spine tip at the apex and the margins and a few hooked spines.

Furcraea inflorescence (stalk) are very tall (up to 40 feet) and produce hundreds to thousands of bulbils, on thin branches. The image of furcraea foetida above is about 30 feet high. It bloomed at University of Bengkulu Indonesia on 2007.

The above picture shows the flowers of furcraea foetida. The number of flower in an inflorescence of this plant can reach more than a thousand flowers. Each flower will change into bulb then turn into onion like shape. This onion like shape will become a new furcraea plant, while the mother plant will die as soon as the main stalk breaks. Some of these onions will start to grow its root while it still attached at the stalk, some of them grow the root after fell down from the stalk. If they lives, we will wait until 7 to 10 years later to see the next tall stalk. Around my neighborhood in Bengkulu-Indonesia, we has elapsed 4 years from when it first grew, it means that about 3 to 6 years later we will see the next tallest flower's stalk of ornament plant. This dam is located at Seluma Regency about 60 km from the capital city of Bengkulu to the south. This dam was built in 1982 in the era when Soeharto was the president of Indonesia. The purpose of this dam is to support the rice farming irrigation system in Seluma which coverage an area of 8,000 Hectars. It is the biggest dam out of three dams built in Bengkulu Province for irrigation, the Air Majunto Dam - in the Muko-Muko regency and The Air Nipis Seginim Dam - in southern Bengkulu Regency.

The location of the Dam of Seluma is close to the western trans sumatera main road, so it can be seen from the road while we travel from Bengkulu to the southern part of Sumatera regions.

The Seluma Dam stocks its water from the river of Seluma, the biggest river that flow across Tais - the capital of Seluma Regency - from the upstream part of Seluma to the sea.

Actually i want to give the title for this post is "God, Tell Me Who I Am". It because this poor animal is an abnormal kind of fish. It is fish, but not live in the water, it is not amphibian because its totally not resemble any of them. The most approximate resemblance to this fish is the froglet without leg. It seem that the evolution for this species had stopped before it reached its end. The best way to describe this species is "the species that got stuck in the middle of evolution". I try to find the species name of our guest here, and the most similar kind goes to Periophthalmus argentilineatus.

The mudskipper in Bengkulu averagely can grow up to 3 inches. It makes it is not the same species as giant mudskipper (Periophthalmodon schlosseri). This kind of fish is easily to find in many rivers in Bengkulu. The one I encounter here lives in Sungai Hitam (Black River) Bengkulu, about 2 km from Bengkulu city central.

The thing that is very amazing from this kind of fish, it it prefer to live on the water to in the water. Almost all of its time is walking around the bank of the river, looking for food on the land, climbing the root of pine trees, playing on the ground or just hanging around over a block on the water. Even if it is threatened, it will not dive into the water. If you want this kind of fish to be the occupant of your aquarium, you will be so disappointed, because it will not dive or swim. It prefer to jump like a frog on the water surface using its pair of pectoral fins. Short to say, it just need the moist, but dislike water. "I hate waterssss"

Good thing for this fish is the people of Bengkulu is not interested to consume it. It made this fish is free from first number one enemy - the fishermen. The only thing that maybe endangering this species is its ecosystem.

The mudskipper in Indonesia is called Blodok. In Bengkulu i never heard the special name of it. We just call it jumping fish. The species name of this fish is Periophthalmus argentilineatus is refer to its big eyes. Mean while the term mudskipper itself is reffering to its way to move on the mud by skipping its fins. Ha..even scientist had a different point of view about what the name for this fish.

The things i can say about its eyes are, firstly the eyes can blink. I saw several times it blink only left eye or only right eye an most of time it blinks altogether. And the second, you can see too from the images that the eyes is colored blue. The blue color of the eyes is happen when i took the picture using flashlight of my camera. I mean, these eyes are glowing blue, different from our eyes that glowing red under the flashlight of camera

Towing a beach seine at Bengkulu Beach. In local language it is called "maelo pukek"

Hauling beach seines is one of some Bengkulu's fishermen methods to catch fishes from the beach. This method has long been existed in Bengkulu, maybe before Indonesian Independence the fishermen of Bengkulu had acknowledged to this method. I still remember when i was in kindergarten we were taught to sing a local song entitled "Yo botoy botoy" that describing the hauling beach seines culture at Bengkulu beach.

A beach seine is a seine net operated from the shore. The gear is composed of a bunt (bag or lose netting) and long wings lengthened with long ropes for towing the seine to the beach. The headrope with floats is on the surface, the footrope is in permanent contact with the bottom and the seine is therefore a barrier which prevent the fish from escaping from the area enclosed by the net.

To set a beach seine is done by fastening the first towing line ashore. Using a small boat without engine, then the line, the first wing, the bag, second wing and second line is set out in a wide arc and brought back to the beach. The bottom and surface act as natural barriers which prevent the fish from escaping from the area enclosed by the net.

There are two groups of beach seine hauler. Each group hauling one side line of the beach seine. At the first tow, the group separate each other for about 100 meters and then they getting closer for some next tow.

After the net has been places surrounding a school of fish, fishermen on the beach haul the "wings" of the net. The drag lines are towed simultaneously from the beach. As the net approaches the beach, fishes are herded in front of the bag or bunt.

When the wings begin to rise on the shoreline, the withdrawal is done through the command of a foreman in order to adjust the position of the seine so that not too many of the fishes escape from the net.

The groups haul the rope gradually approached each other along with the approach of seine to the beach. From the first tows, these group has displaced for 4 or 5 times successively until finally they are united.

For successful operations it is suitable that the ground rope reached the beach first, to bring the gear underneath the fish.

Rafflesia Arnoldii the biggest flower originated from Bengkulu-Sumatra-Indonesia

Have you ever seen the biggest flower in the world ???. Well, i'm so lucky to be able to see this october blossom of Rafflesia Arnoldi. On October 9th, 2011, i had the occasion to visit the site of Raflesia Jungle at Bukit Daun protected forest, in the regency of Kepahiang Bengkulu Province. This is my first time in life to see lively the biggest flower in the world which happen to be only in my Province, Bengkulu-The Land of Rafflesia.The site is situated about 50 kilometers from the capital city Bengkulu, or about 60 minutes drive.

Fortunately, there a Raflessia Arnoldi Flower was in blossom when i visit there. Even it has bloomed for 7 days, but the greatness and the beauty of this giant flower is still exist. The tourist guide to the flower told me, that if i come in the next 3 days, the flower has no longer able to show its beauty. The best time to see it is about 3 days after it bloom, and it last for about 7-10 days.
According to what i've read, it says that Rafflesia arnoldii is a parasitic plant, without roots or leaves. The main body of the plant resides inside the host plant. The only visible parts are the flowers, which burst through the host plant’s bark as compact buds, and later the fruits. The flowers are up to 1 m in diameter, and their flesh is reddish-brown with white spots. Well, that's the theory that i want to discuss in another occasion, but now let's take a look at this images of the remarkable flower....The Rafflesia Arnoldii from Bengkulu - Sumatra Island -Indonesia land.

When fully blossom, one healthy condition rafflesia arnoldii can reach the diameter more than 1 meter

At the rightmost is the bended root of Tetrastigma, the plant that climb with tendrils and have palmately compound leaves. It is known that this plant is to be the solely host of Rafflesia Arnoldii.

A bulb is seem to grow at the upper part root of the tetrasigma plant. According to the rafflesia keeper, this bulb will be bloom in the next two months. That is in December. In the December of this year, it is estimated at least 2 or 3 of this giant flower will blossom.

The foetid smell of the flowers attracts carrion-flies (of the genera Lucilia and Sarcophaga)

In USA they call it Downy Rose Myrtle, in some other countries they call it ceylon hill goose berry meanwhile In Bengkulu-Indonesia we call it Keramunting. It is some kind of berries that used to very popular among the kids in Bengkulu-Indonesia around 80s. It because of this berry could be found easily everywhere in Bengkulu. Almost in every bush in Bengkulu has groups of kramunting shrub. But now, this fruit is so hard to find because almost every kramunting bush had been opened and transformed into residences. Now only a few places in the city of Bengkulu that has Keramunting shrub, one of them in Rawa Makmur bush, 2 km from city central.

The Amazing Sound of DOL - Traditional Drum From Bengkulu

Dol is a traditional music instrument from Bengkulu-Indonesia. It is a typical of percussion instrument which shaped like a big drum. Dol is made of wood which is pierced in the middle and then covered with cow husk. Its diameter is about 70 - 125 cm, and its beater appliance has 5 cm in diameter and 30 cm in length. The way of using it is by lapping it.

For some time, the only purpose of this instrument is to accompany the Tabot event which is held annually in Bengkulu-Indonesia between 1-10 Muharram (first month of Islamic Calendar) to bring the spirit to all performer and audiences of Tabot event all over the circumtences. And that was an obligation that had to be obeyed according to Bengkulunese tradition. But today, along with the development of new paradigm about this tradition, the prohibition in using the dol outside the tabot festival time is no longer exist. And without the that prohibition, now Dol is getting more popular. This instruments is used so often in all festival or event held in Bengkulu, and really does it bring the spirit to whoever around it.

Maybe this is the fastest method in catching the fish. A cast net (Indonesian Language called jala) is very common for Indonesian fishermen or fishing hobbyist as a mean to catch fishes from the shallow and free of obstruction water. A basic cast net is a circular net with weighted edges. The net is attached to a line so that it can be retrieved, and another line is attached to a drawstring which can be used to pull the net closed, trapping fish inside. It is operated by throwing it in such manner that it could spread out on the water, sink and trap the catch. Anything could be catched by cast net as long as the size of the catch is bigger than its mesh

Thomas Parr Monument - This monument was built in 1808 as the grave for British Resident of Bencoolen (Bengkulu) Thomas Parr who was murdered in December 27 1807 by local civilian as the result of bad relationship between local rulers and EIC (East Indian Company) servants. But as the British administration worried about security of the remain, the remain of Thomas Parr then removed to Fort Marlborough. The monument still stand with its original state altough many big earthquakes happened in Bengkulu from time to time, except that the surrounding of the monument is renovated by Bengkulu's government in 2010

This grave separated about 1 km from British Cemetery, and now the position of this grave is on the center of street junction. In his last will Hamilton wrote : .... I appoint James Moore Esquire and my brother Captain John Hamilton her Guardians and I recommend her to the protection of Mrs. Moor in particular to whom I take the liberty of bequeathing fifty Pound stirling. ...

The name of this fort was chosen by Joseph Collet (Appointed Deputy Governor of Bencoolen) in honour of John Churchill, a famous British commandant who was given degree "Duke of Marlborough." Additional construction were made in 1759

The memorials of Thomas Parr and Charles Murray who were killed at a local dispute two days after 1807 christmas day and an unidentified grave.
