Over 1,000 people have already signed a petition to save the historic Old Bennett School — started by a young resident who said, “This isn’t right.”

Built in 1909, the grand Bennett School isn’t just another old building. It represents education, community, and the healing of our area after the Civil War. As one advocate put it: “It’s a piece of history that people want to touch.”

Now it’s on Virginia’s Most Endangered Historic Places list… while facing possible demolition for courthouse expansion.

Micron Technology has started manufacturing its 1α (1-alpha) DRAM chip at its Manassas facility, marking a significant milestone for domestic semiconductor production and the local economy.

Manassas City Councilman Mark Wolfe shared the news on Facebook, writing: “More fabulous news for Manassas! Thrilled to be a part of Micron’s unveiling of production of their 1-alpha chip. The most advanced memory chip ever produced in the USA, it’s made right here in Manassas.”

The announcement, made official by Micron on May 22, 2026, positions the Manassas fab as a key site for the world’s most advanced DDR4 technology. The 1-alpha node is expected to quadruple Micron’s DDR4 wafer supply at the Virginia facility, supporting long-lifecycle memory for critical sectors including automotive, defense and aerospace, industrial, networking, and medical devices.

Qualified production is anticipated by the end of calendar year 2026 as part of a broader modernization and expansion project backed by more than $2 billion in company investment and $275 million in finalized CHIPS and Science Act funding.

Ties to 2018 Expansion

This development builds on Micron’s landmark 2018 announcement — at the time Virginia’s largest public-private partnership — when the company pledged a $3 billion expansion of its Godwin Drive facility. That project promised 1,100 new high-paying jobs and helped establish Manassas as a growing tech hub.

Since then, Potomac Local has tracked the facility’s growth, including infrastructure upgrades, workforce development partnerships with local colleges, and community trade-offs.

Status of Adjacent Baseball Fields Remains Uncertain

The Micron facility is located next to the E.G. Smith Baseball Field Complex, longtime home of the Greater Manassas Baseball League (GMBL). While Micron’s May 2026 press release and related announcements focus exclusively on modernization and expansion within the existing fab footprint — with no mention of additional land acquisition or the baseball complex — questions about the future of the fields persist.

Potomac Local has reported extensively on this issue. An option agreement from earlier negotiations gives Micron the right to purchase the complex, but the company has not exercised it during the current 1-alpha production phase. As of early 2025, the Manassas City Council held closed-door discussions on the matter, leaving the long-term future of GMBL at the site uncertain.

Micron did not indicate in its latest materials that it would require expansion onto the baseball fields at this time.

Local and Broader Impact

City leaders and state officials, including U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, attended related celebrations at the plant. The expansion supports more than 3,100 jobs tied to the facility and the surrounding ecosystem while strengthening U.S. supply chain resilience for memory chips.

Potomac Local will continue monitoring developments regarding both the Micron expansion and the future of the E.G. Smith Baseball Complex.

Prince William County detectives have charged two men in the shooting death of a 42-year-old Bowling Green man. The fatal altercation happened on May 12 in the 1200 block of Potomac Vista Drive in Woodbridge.

Detectives say the incident stemmed from a narcotics transaction involving people known to the victim. Taiyon Damari Jackson, 20, of Alexandria, and William Latrale Lisenby, 23, of Lorton, face murder charges along with related firearm offenses. Both men were arrested last week and are being held without bond.

Officers responded to the scene around 8:58 p.m. after the victim, identified as Frances Joseph Douglas, sustained multiple gunshot wounds in a parking lot fight. A third person produced a firearm during the physical altercation. Douglas was able to reach his vehicle and was driven to a hospital by a family member, where he later died.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to contact Prince William County police at 703-792-7000 or submit a tip at pwcva.gov/policetip.

Manassas Monday: Preserving History at the Old Bennett School – Memorial Day Special

May 25, 2026 — On this rainy Memorial Day edition of Manassas Monday, we discuss local news, weather, and a major preservation battle happening right in the heart of Manassas.

We’re joined by Manassas City Councilwoman Teresa Coates Ellis and Colin Turner of the Save Old Bennett School effort. They share why the historic 1909 Bennett School — a grand Romanesque-style building on the Prince William County Judicial Campus — has been named one of Virginia’s Most Endangered Historic Places in 2026.

The building, which served as a school from 1909 to 1969 before becoming county office space, now faces potential demolition as the county moves forward with courthouse and jail expansion plans. Councilwoman Ellis and Colin make the case for preserving this architectural treasure rather than tearing it down or relocating it.

Quantico residents lost power Thursday evening, May 21, after an osprey nested on an electric pole. The outage hit the entire small Prince William County town around 10 p.m.

Dominion Energy crews responded quickly and restored service. The company identified the osprey on a pole along C Street as the cause. Town officials thanked Steve and Roger from Dominion Virginia Power for their fast work and clear explanation.

Quantico, a community of about 580 people near the Potomac River, occasionally deals with wildlife-related utility issues given its location.

Several local swimming pools remained closed this weekend as rain and cool temperatures washed out the start of the summer season. Prince William County announced Saturday evening that all outdoor pools and water parks would remain closed on Sunday, May 24, due to inclement weather.

In Manassas Park, officials canceled the Soft Opening for Signal Bay Waterpark on Friday night and kept the facility closed on Sunday because temperatures stayed below 70 degrees with ongoing rain. The city expressed disappointment after months of preparation and encouraged residents to sign up for text alerts for future updates.

Fredericksburg also closed the Doris E. Buffett Pool on Saturday due to low water and air temperatures.

The rain also led to the cancellation of fireworks in the town of Quantico. “Event cancelled due to weather. Reschedule date is TBD.”

The National Weather Service forecast calls for continued showers and possible thunderstorms through Memorial Day, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and a good chance of rain each day. Many families hoping to kick off summer at the pools will need to wait for drier conditions next week.

Stafford County Public Schools and Stafford County Fire and Rescue partner on the High School Fire Academy, a hands-on program that gives local high school students real-world training in firefighting and emergency medical response. The program allows students to earn high school credit while learning skills that can lead to careers in public safety.

Class sizes appear to vary. Recent sessions have included around 20-25 students. The latest, High School Fire Academy 7, graduated in spring 2026. The program has grown since its start, with earlier classes having smaller groups.

The initiative has been in place for several years, with the first classes launching around 2019-2020. By May 2025, Class 6 had graduated, and Class 7 followed in 2026, indicating it has operated for roughly six to seven years as of now. It continues to serve as a key pathway for young people interested in serving the community.

Students from all five Stafford County high schools can apply. Applicants typically need to be at least 16 years old, maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher, submit a transcript, provide letters of recommendation (including one from a fire department member if possible), complete an application, and write an essay. Academic performance is reviewed as part of the selection process. The program runs during the school year, often with students attending half-day sessions.

Stafford County firefighters responded quickly to a house fire early Sunday morning in the 200 block of Choptank Road near A.G. Wright Middle School.

Crews arrived just over five minutes after the call came in, before 5:30 a.m., and found fire coming from the side of a two-story single-family home.

They brought the blaze under control in about 20 minutes while searching the residence under high heat conditions. All five occupants were safely evacuated before firefighters arrived and reported no injuries.

Smoke alarms were present and activated during the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family. Unfortunately, multiple pets inside the home did not survive.

The Stafford County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause as routine. Quantico Fire & Emergency Services assisted at the scene.
