A 90 year-old D-Day veteran is set to marry his former fiancée 70 years after they split up due to the PTSD of his wartime experiences.

Roy Vickerman called Nora Jackson’s home to apologize for their split and told the taxi driver to wait outside for a few minutes while he presented her with a bunch of flowers.

Nora threw her arms around Roy as soon as she saw him and now, a year later, the couple have celebrated their engagement at Roy’s 90th birthday party.

The couple first met in 1940 at school in Bucknall, Stoke on Trent and soon became engaged, but the outbreak of war interrupted their plans.

The couple was reunited after Roy spoke about Nora on a local radio show and the host helped find her address.

Not knowing if Nora had a husband and not wishing to upset her, he simply planned to give her some flowers, apologise for the way their affair had ended, and then leave.

“Nora came to the door and put her arms around me and gave me a kiss. Four hours later, I had to tell the taxi driver I was staying.”

“I knew him straight away, but I never thought I would see him again,” Nora said. “It was a shock to see him, because it had been such a long time, but it was lovely. It was just like old times.”

After reuniting, the original engagement ring is back on Nora’s finger.

Of all the repulsive habits our canine companions have—drinking from the toilet, rolling in swamp muck, licking their butts—nothing tops the disgusting practice of eating poop. Their motivation may not be to gross us humans out, but it certainly does. So much so, in fact, that poop eating is often a reason people try to rehome a dog or even opt for euthanasia.

There’s a scientific name for this habit—coprophagia (kop-ruh-fey-jee-uh)—and also both behavioral and physiologic reasons why some dogs view dung as a delicacy.

If you have a poop eater, don’t despair. There are ways to discourage the habit.

Although not deeply probed by science—there are few studies on it—poop eating is a relatively common phenomenon. In a 2012 study presented at the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior annual conference, researchers led by Dr. Benjamin Hart, from the University of California, Davis, found that:

16 percent (one in six) of dogs are classified as “serious” stool eaters, which means that they were caught in the act five times.

24 percent of the dogs in the study (one in four) were observed eating feces at least once.

Hart wrote, “Our conclusion is that eating of fresh stools is a reflection of an innate predisposition of ancestral canids living in nature that protects pack members from intestinal parasites present in feces that could occasionally be dropped in the den/rest area.” His study consisted of two separate surveys sent to about 3,000 dog owners.

While it is repulsive to human sensibilities, it’s not really all that bad from a canine point of view. Dogs evolved as scavengers, eating whatever they found on the ground or in the trash heap, so their ideas of haute cuisine is somewhat different from ours. In his Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training, animal behaviorist Steven R. Lindsay says, that coprophagia “may be one of several appetitive survival behaviors that have evolved to cope with the periodic adversity of starvation.” In other words, when food is scarce, you can’t be picky.

POOP EATING IS NORMAL FOR MOTHERS AND PUPS

For some species, such as rabbits, eating fecal droppings is a totally normal way of obtaining key nutrients. In fact, if you prevent rabbits from doing this, they will develop health problems, and young ones will fail to thrive.

Fortunately, dogs do not need to get nutrients in this manner.

It is, however, a normal, natural behavior at some canine life stages. Mother dogs will lick their puppies to urge them to eliminate, and clean their feces, for about the first three weeks. Puppies will also naturally engage in this behavior, eating both their own fecal droppings (known as autocoprophagia), and those of other dogs (allocoprophagia), as well as cats and other animals. Some dogs find horse manure and goose droppings particularly appealing.

Eating their own poop is harmless, but consuming that of other animals may cause health problems if the stool is contaminated with parasites, viruses, or toxins. In most cases, this behavior will fade before the puppy is about nine months old.

SOME FACTS ABOUT DOGS WHO EAT POOP

When it occurs in puppies, coprophagia is generally considered part of the process of exploring the world around them. Most will be satisfied with a sniff, but a few will want, like human children, to put everything in their mouths. One bizarre fact: Dogs will rarely eat soft, poorly formed stools or diarrhea. They appear to be attracted most to hard stools. Frozen ones, in particular, are gulped down with relish. There is a reason why dog owners have coined the term, “poopsicle.”

In his study, Hart made some other observations about why dogs eat poop:

Coprophagia was more common in multi-dog households. In single-dog homes, only 20 percent of dogs had the habit, while in homes with three dogs, that rose to 33 percent.

Poop eaters are no harder to house train than any other dogs.

Females are more likely to eat poop, and intact males were least likely.

92 percent of poop eaters want fresh stuff, only one to two days old.

85 percent of poop eaters will not eat their own feces, only that of other dogs.

Greedy eaters—dogs who steal food off tables—tend to also be poop eaters.

WHY DO DOGS EAT POOP?

If your adult dog starts to dine on dung, you should consult with your vet to rule out such health problems as:

parasites

diets deficient in nutrients and calories

malabsorption syndromes

diabetes, Cushing’s, thyroid disease, and other conditions that might cause an increase in appetite

drugs, such as steroids

In many cases, dogs start to eat their own poop because of some kind of environmental stress or behavioral triggers, including:

Isolation: Studies have shown that dogs who are kept alone in kennels or basements are more likely to eat poop than those dogs who live close to their people.

Restrictive confinement: Spending too much time confined in a small spaces can cause the problem. It’s not unusual to see coprophagia in dogs rescued from crowded shelters.

Anxiety, often a result of a person using punishment or harsh methods during housetraining. According to this theory, dogs may eliminate and then eat their own poop to get rid of the evidence, but then they are punished more. It becomes a vicious cycle.

Attention-seeking: Dogs eat their own poop to get a reaction from their humans, which they inevitably will. So if you see your dog doing this, don’t overreact.

Inappropriate association with real food: Dogs who are fed in close proximity to their feces may make a connection between the odors of food and those of poop and will be unable to tell the difference.

Scenting it on their mothers. Lindsay writes that in some cases, puppies will get confused by sniffing fecal odors on their mother’s breath after she has cleaned them. Also, sometimes mothers may regurgitate food that is mixed with puppy fecal matter. He calls this an “appetitive inoculation,” which may set a puppy up to develop this bad habit.

Living with a sick or elderly dog. Sometimes a healthy dog will consume stools from a weaker canine member of the household, especially in cases of fecal incontinence. Scientists hypothesize that this may be related to the instinct to protect the pack from predators.

HOW TO STOP YOUR DOG FROM EATING POOP

Veterinarians and dog owners have seen improvements with a handful of strategies, including:

Vitamin supplementation. There’s been a long-standing theory that dogs eat feces because they are missing something in their diets. Vitamin-B deficiency, in particular, has been a prime suspect, and studies have backed this up. In 1981, scientists showed fecal microbial activity synthesized thiamine, a B-vitamin. Other research found other missing nutrients.

Enzyme supplementation. The modern canine diet is higher in carbohydrates and lower in meat-based proteins and fats than the canine ancestral diet. Some people have had success with a meat tenderizer that contains papain, an enzyme.

Taste-aversion products. The theory is that certain tastes and smells are as disgusting to dogs as the idea of stool eating is to us and that spraying certain substances on poop will make it less appealing. Many of these products contain monosodium glutamate, chamomile, pepper-plant derivatives, yucca, garlic, and parsley.

Perhaps the best way to stop the problem is through training and environmental management methods, including:

Keep the dog’s living area clean, including the yard, so there will be no poops for him to pick up.

Cat owners should keep that litter box clean or out of the dog’s reach.

Supervise your dog on walks, and pick up after him immediately.

Training. Work hard on the commands “leave it” and “come.” One simple exercise, suggested by Debra Horwitz, DVM, Diplomate ACVB and Gary Landsberg, DVM, Diplomate ACVB, is to teach your dog to come to you for a food treat as soon as he has eliminated. That way, the dog will develop a habit to run to you for a tasty tidbit, instead of reaching for the revolting recyclable on the the ground.

With the U.S. Senate now the world’s most prominent crusader against highly questionable American intelligence practices, Wikileaks — the site that once released whistleblower bombshells about U.S. military operations abroad and torture in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp — has been reduced to publishing travel advice. Julian Assange’s move into service journalism is a bit sad. But at least readers can now directly benefit from Wikileaks’ revelations rather than merely feel helpless outrage.

On Sunday, the site revealed two classified Central Intelligence Agency documents. I feel comfortable in providing this link because it’s absurd they were ever classified (much less marked as “NOFORN” — not for foreign eyes) in the first place. One file, named “Surviving Secondary”, teaches CIA operatives the intricacies of attracting as little attention as possible during airport security checks anywhere in the world. The other, entitled “Schengen Overview,” explains how European border control systems worked in early 2012. There is nothing in either of them that would justify keeping them secret: Mostly, they’re just common sense.

Assange tried to make the most of the scoop. “The CIA has carried out kidnappings from European Union states, including Italy and Sweden, during the Bush administration,” Wikileaks’ press release quoted him as saying. “These manuals show that under the Obama administration the CIA is still intent on infiltrating European Union borders and conducting clandestine operations in EU member states.” Major German and French news sites, on an otherwise quiet news day, dutifully reported on the leak from that angle. But few people will be surprised to know that CIA operatives sometimes pass through foreign airports, including European ones, with fake passports. One can’t really expect them to wear their badges on coat lapels while they wait in passport control lines.

The main source of the agency’s advice to its operatives is a 2004 manual from an Israeli security consultancy. Spies are told not to show “unusual nervousness or anxiety” and not to switch lines at security. The file further reveals, in case readers didn’t already know, that it helps to speak the language of the country that issued your passport, that tickets bought for cash in countries where credit cards are common arouse suspicion and that traveling without baggage and on one-way tickets sets off all kinds of alarms. (“Salvadoran security services identified a suspected Venezuelan government courier on the basis of a military style haircut, physical fitness, casual dress, and little baggage.”)

In general, it’s a good idea to look your ticket class, which includes the quality of your gadgets; don’t wear sweatsuit, in other words, if you’re traveling on a diplomatic passport. And it’s always a good idea to answer questions consistently and without hesitation.

One CIA operative who was passing through Europe is held up as a positive example. A European security officer found traces of an explosive in his bag. The CIA man explained he had been in counterterrorism training in Washington, DC, but the security officer was initially skeptical. Still, he “consistently maintained his cover story” and was eventually allowed to rebook his flight and leave inhospitable Europe behind.

Reading this story of inconsequential bumbling, I was reminded of the immortal final dialogue in “Burn after Reading”:

CIA Superior: What did we learn, Palmer?

CIA Officer: I don’t know, sir.

CIA Superior: I don’t [expletive] know either. I guess we learned not to do it again.

Still, there is something in the CIA manuals that should indeed worry anyone who travels to or lives in Europe. The agency reveals that out of the 1 million people on the Schengen countries’ common watch-list, only 2.5 percent are there because of some criminal activity. The rest of the alerts have to do with immigration matters such as visa denials or expulsions.

The European entry control system, in other words, is geared to fight illegal immigration, not crime, terrorism or spying. That’s good for the agents traveling with fake identities — and also for terrorists. If Europe’s focus ever shifted to looking for more consequential security threats than potentially fraudulent welfare recipients, the CIA might be obliged to write manuals describing more complicated tradecraft than that found in the Wikileaks documents.

One whiff of budding flowers and the pressure in your chest starts to build. Your nose feels twitchy, your eyes snap shut and a-a-a-a-c-hooo — a sneeze rockets out at 75 to 100 miles per hour. And with a long, miserable allergy season ahead, that’s going to be happening a lot.

We all know how a sneeze happens. What we don’t know is why our eyes automatically close when we do it.

School kids will tell you it’s prevent your eyes from popping out, an urban legend – at least for the most part. There has been at least one report of this actually happening.

Dr. Rachel Vreeman, co-author of Don’t Swallow Your Gum! Myths, Half-Truths, and Outright Lies About Your Body and Health says she discovered an 1882 story in the New York Times about a woman whose eyeball popped out (known as eyeball subluxing) after sneezing.

According to the story, published on April 30, 1882, a woman “met with a singular accident day before yesterday. While riding on a street car, she was seized with a sudden fit of sneezing and burst one of her eyeballs, from which she has since been suffering the most intense pain.”

Vreeman says there is no modern medical evidence of eyeball subluxing from sneezing, although she admits it has happened to people who violently vomit. Usually, though, this only happens to people who suffer from eye muscle problems.

Interestingly, those same muscles provide a bit of ammunition to shoot down the eyeball-popping urban legend.

“There is no way that keeping your eyelids closed can prevent [your eyes from popping out],” says Dr. Robert Naclerio, a professor of surgery and section chief of otolaryngology at the University of Chicago Medicine. “It’s not like the muscles are strong enough.”

Of course, just because the eyelid muscles don’t have the strength to hold your eyes in, it doesn’t mean they’ll explode out during a violent sneeze.

Optometrist Bert Moritz of the Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, Wis., explains that six extra-ocular muscles firmly hold the eye in the socket, making it almost impossible for eyeball subluxing (what a relief!).

And though it may feel as if pressure builds in your entire face before you sneeze, it doesn’t increase in your eyes.

“The nasal passage, where the air comes through, is separated from the eye by some bones and membranes,” says Naclerio.

So why then do we clamp our eyes shut when we sneeze?

“This is an involuntary reflex,” explains Moritz. “When our brain sends this muscle message, one part of the message is to close our eyes. It’s similar to a deep tendon reflex.”

A deep tendon reflex is what happens when a physician taps on your knee with that tiny hammer and your knee jerks. It’s simply an uncontrolled body response. Sneezing with your eyes open feels impossible without using your fingers to pry them open.

Which has certainly been done, by one of the guys on Mythbusters and countless others.

“It is certainly possible to keep your eyes open if you try while you are sneezing … but it requires working against the reflex,” says co-author Vreeman, assistant professor of pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. “It’s a very strong response. The body puts as much force as it can muster into cleaning out its airways.”

Others have theorized that we shut our eyes when sneezing to shield our eyes from whatever we’ve expelled, says Moritz. Generally, when we sneeze we’re protecting ourselves from allergens and the reflex to shut our eyes might have developed as a further defense.

“Some biologists think that when we expel our mucous and things [we close our eyes because] we don’t want that stuff to get in our eyes,” he says.

SHOULD PIT BULLS BE BANNED

Breed Specific Legislation (or BSL) is still very common and widespread across the country. Proponents of BSL […]

Breed Specific Legislation (or BSL) is still very common and widespread across the country. Proponents of BSL say Pit Bulls have inherent characteristics that make them dangerous, that these dogs should be banned from hearts and homes around the world forever.

Still many argue against banning them.

Pit Bulls have been vilified in the media for many years. This has caused some localities to ban this type of dog from their town or city limits. But is such a ban reasonable? Are these dogs more dangerous than other dogs? Do these dogs in general pose a threat to the community at large?

What is a Pit Bull?

What may surprise some people is that pit bull is not a breed of dog. Instead, it is a term used to describe several breeds of dogs including the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, The English Bull Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier. Some organizations also include the American Bulldog.

Others use the term “pit bull type dog”. The definition for that term is largely subjective and varies wildly depending on who is providing the definition. It is important to keep in mind that when you hear “pit bull type dog”, the speaker is probably not describing one of the dogs listed above. If they were, they would just say “pit bull”. When you hear “pit bull type dog” in a negative context what is happening is that pit bulls are being blamed for the behavior of a dog that does not even fit the description of a pit bull.

Pit Bulls Through the Years

Prior to the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, pit bulls did not get that much attention in the media. So where did these dogs fit in before they became the media’s favorite villains?

In the early 1900’s, this type of dog was the most popular family pet in America. So trusted and loyal were pit bulls that they were given the nickname “nanny dogs” because of the caring way that they watched over children in the family. Because these dogs were so popular, many companies used their image in advertising campaigns. The most famous of these was for RCA Victrola. Another very famous pit bull was featured on the Our Gang television show, sometimes remembered as The Little Rascals. The show’s four-legged rascal, Petey was a pit bull.

Helen Keller had a very beloved pit bull that was her companion for many years. Pit bulls also have their place among the ranks of this nation’s heroes. In fact, the most decorated war dog of all time was a pit bull named Stubby who did his service during World War I.

There are also modern day pit bull heroes including drug sniffing dogs, and pit bulls that comfort the sick and grieving through work as therapy dogs.

If, as some media reports and jurisdictions say, pit bulls are innately dangerous, none of the above would be possible.
