We've been giving some thought to reworking some low level layers of Povo's wiki rendering system. Along the way we ran up against an impressively difficult problem in converting some "weakly typed" classes to C# generics. A more full writeup is <a href="/Member:DjMax/Code/Generic_Challenge">here</a>, including links to help you tell us why we're missing the easy answer. (ahem.)

We use the excellent <a href="http://extjs.com" class="external text" title="http://extjs.com" rel="nofollow">Ext JS</a> library for the fancier bits of our user interface. We wrote an article about our modifications which you can read <a href="http://www.povo.com/Zine:Povo_Staff/ExtJS" class="new">here</a>.

We've been furiously developing "real" applications for the iPhone. We were happy to hear the announcement of a formal SDK, but we're not waiting until January. We have three application bits at the moment:

<ol><li> The main "<a href="/Zine:Povo_Staff/Povo_iPhone_Client">Povo Client</a>"
</li><li> A <a href="/Zine:Povo_Staff/Povo_iPhone_Plugin">Mobile Safari Plugin</a> to allow any web application to get GPS information (with user permission of course)
</li><li> A <a href="http://www.povo.com/Zine:Povo_Staff/QRCode" class="new">iPhone QR Codes</a> (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code" class="external text" title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code" rel="nofollow">Wassat now?</a>) decoder application, allowing you to use the camera to get bookmarks, contact info, etc.

Sometimes we find a public data source, like the list of <a href="http://www.cityofboston.gov/parks/openspaces/" class="external text" title="http://www.cityofboston.gov/parks/openspaces/" rel="nofollow">Boston Parks on cityofboston.gov</a> that we'd like to have in Povo. There are some good tools out there for doing this, such as <a href="http://openkapow.com/" class="external text" title="http://openkapow.com/" rel="nofollow">OpenKapow</a> which present graphical interfaces for defining your "crawler." But I wanted something a little more generic. An account of my insanity, and ultimately success is described in detail on the <a href="http://www.povo.com/Development/GeckoFX_Javascript_Engine">GeckoFX Javascript Engine</a> page.
