At 24' long, with a 5'4" cabin top, the SJ24 sails very well, is fast for her size and is a great cruising or racing boat. She is particularly strong in light air yet is also competitive in winds above 20 kts. Comfortable inside, sleeps 4 adults, with a dinette table and galley cozy, clean and perfect for long weekends or extended trips on inland waters. With only a 4 foot draft, she can sail into shallow bays and waterways that would keep other boats away. This is a very nice San Juan 24 with very low hours on a new dependable motor.

Features:

New paint, bottom coat and teak restoring in 2011.

Has been refitted with all new deck hardware, mast, halyards and running rigging
Sail inventory includes 2 loose footed mainsails, one older and two sets of reef points, , one Mylar Genoa, one spare Genoa, one heavy jib that can be reefed plus 2 to 4 other headsails, new spinnaker with spinnaker pole and gear and mainsail cover

VHF-DSC radio license and Pleasure Craft Operator's Certification Class

A number of sailors have approached me about getting their VHF-DSC radio licence and /or their Pleasure Craft Operators' Certification.
I am planning to do these programs in the near future, probably the next couple of weeks. So people can have their certification for the cruising season.

I am heading the nominating committee to develop a slate of board candidates for the coming year? The elections will be held at the Annual General Meeting next month.

This is a time for you to raise your hand to nominate yourself to be on the Board of your yacht club. Don't be shy. We need the help and need to get more members involved in running the club. This is a great chance to contribute to the club, develop leadership skills, and have a great time with a fun group of people. In the last year we have established a growing racing program and the coming year promises a strong cruising program and more significant youth training program.

You can also nominate someone else, but please get their consent first.

Because of the change in the Bylaws, this year we will be electing the Commodore position in addition to the others.

The positions are:

Commodore - Chief Office of the club. Exert and provide leadership in carrying out the objectives of the club. Represent the club to the community at large.

Vice Commodore - Perform duties of commodore in his or her absence. Serve as the Board liaison to the committees.

Treasurer - Keep and maintain an accounting of all funds and financial records of the club. Prepare and make regular financial reports.

Secretary - Keep and distribute the minutes of all Executive, Annual and Special Meetings.

Cruise Director - Chair committee to plan and execute the cruising program of the club.

Keel-Boat Racing Director - Chair committee to set race schedule, deciding on weekly races, maintain race results, and award trophies.

Small Boat Program Director - Chair committee to develop the youth training program, support a youth racing team, and facilities to support small boat use by club members.

Public Relations Director - Develop marketing materials and execute marketing programs to support the goals of the club.

Membership Director - Maintain membership list, collect dues and turn over to Treasurer, develop programs to grow membership of the club.

It is really great fun.

Calgary Yacht Club Invitation to Desolation Flotilla

Member of PRYC Laura Kew would like to invite members to join the Calgary Yacht Club Annual Flotilla, heading to Desolation Sound from Saturday April 27^th to Saturday May 4^th.

Laura is a previous member of this club, and knows that these are a great bunch of fun sailors- all very experienced on the ocean, despite their land-lubber location. The Calgary Yacht Club is a very active club, in operation since 1933 on Chestermere Lake, just east of Calgary. Actually, the manager for the past 12 years or so has been Fie Hulsker, who is the Grandmother to Jasper Mohan, and Mom to Barb.

The flotilla will begin with a night on the dock in Lund, carry on up to Tenedos Bay, Gorge Harbour, Octopus Island Marine Park, Squirrel Cove, Cortes Bay or Bliss Landing, and then carry on down to Powell River. We hope to be able to get a dinner together to introduce the clubs at the end of the flotilla, possibly at the Savoury Bight Restaurant.

Below is the schedule. Around 5 boats have signed up so far, chartering out of Desolation Yacht Charters in Comox. This is a great chance to spend a week on the water with the company of other boats and sailors- with lots of camaraderie and fun to be had.

Laura has participated in many of the CYC flotillas, and it was always a great time. She is looking forward to taking her own boat along to join this event, Quetzal, a Catalina 27. Other members interested in joining all or part of this cruise please contact her at laurakew@shaw.ca, or at 604.483.7652.

Reservations will be made in advance for dockage.

This is the proposed route, weather permitting. Should make for great sailing, socializing and new and interesting destinations to explore. We are still finalizing crew assignments for some boats and we’ll get back to you A.S.A.P.

Sixth Race in the Frostbite Series

It was the best wind of the year and a great race by all accounts. Unfortunately, Brian and I were attending a racing rules seminar in Vancouver and missed out on a great race. It was a great seminar, but not as much fun as racing.

St. Patrick's Day Party !!

Gerard and I usually kick off the new boating year with the hosting of the St. Patrick' Day party. We will host the club on Saturday, March 16th at 7 p.m. Our address is: 6655 Drake Street. (In Cranberry. Turn left at Mitchel's Grocery store, drive past the park and we are the second house on the right)

Four boats showed on time for the race, but the wind was 2.5 hours late. The race from Willingdon to Grief Point took 3.5 hours. It was 2.5 hours on the outbound leg with most of the progress coming from the tide. The return leg saw the wind pick and took 1 hour.

Second Race of the Frostbite Series

This one was really low wind and the race was only from Willingdon Beach to Grief Point. It still took over 3 hours. A real test of patience.

Unfortunately I lost the times, do to a computer problem.

First Race of Frostbite Series

The wind was very light, but we were treated to a dry sunny day, always something to be thankful for in January, to kick off the winter series. The race course was shortened to be from Willingdon Beach to Grief point and a return to Willingdon.

Special thanks to Kim and Gary for putting new markers out.

We had four boat and plenty of crew for this race. A good turn out for a winter race. The after race meeting at the Bowling Alley was great fun.

St. John Ambulance First Aid Courses

In addition to tuning up your boat this spring for the coming cruising season, think about adding a new skill that could save lives. We can be far from medical help on our boating trips and it is reassuring to know that you have the knowledge and skill to assist others while waiting for that help.

St. John Ambulance offers a two day standard first aid course which is well suited to a boaters needs. The next one is this Monday and does have open seats. It is a course that is regularly offered by the branch. You can register for this course or find about future ones by calling (604) 483-2250.

Special General Meeting on December 5th

A Special General Meeting was held on December 5th for the purpose of adopting a new constitution and bylaws for the Powell River Yacht Club. The meeting was well attended, the needed quorum was present, and the motion to adopt the new constitution and bylaws was passed without dissent.

Information Request from Guy's Cycle Works

We would like assistance as from club members about what would be
their "most common" needs.

While we cannot hope to stock everything, there are those "most common"
items that everyone needs in their spare parts kit - fuses, wiring
connectors, heat shrink tubing, tie wraps, plugs, ropes, anodes, gear lubes,
fuel, additives, etc. We plan to stock the most commons, and will be able
to bring in anything, usually in 1-2 days. We are very excited about some
very necessary items that are excellent proven sellers, being excellent
products that are both good for boaters and for the environment. We also
are promoting winterizing, as poor winterizing leads to horrible spring
starts...

Thanks for your assistance! You and the rest of the Yacht Club members are
invaluable resources for our business!

Question from new boat owner

Hi everyone,

I’m looking at an O’Day 31 and wishing to install a heater to extend the cruising season. I’m also looking (down the road) to upgrade the 2 burner alcohol stove to a 3 burner with an oven unit.

As this is my first sailboat, I’ve been doing some research. And then getting confused!

Here are my questions:

Which is better – propane or diesel?
I did some reading about Espar or Webasco – but they seem to be a bit overkill for a 30 ft boat – are there advantages I’m missing?
Can I get a get a 3 burner stove/oven unit that will also be a heater – or do I need 2 separate appliances?
Is there a preference for propane or diesel for the stove/oven unit?
