A Guide To SLAGIT - The TSM Shopping List & Auctioning Group Import Tool

SLAGIT was created by our longtime livestream viewer Rootfix and can be found at the "SLAGIT" link at the top of Power Word: Gold. Read on for our guide on how to use SLAGIT to speed up your TSM group and shopping list creation.

What Does SLAGIT Do?

The simplest answer is that SLAGIT saves time. Lots of time.

SLAGIT allows you to copy and paste large sections of websites that include WoW item links (Wowhead, The Undermine Journal, Wowuction etc.) and instantly generate Auctioning Group and Shopping Lists that can be imported into TradeSkillMaster.

How Do I Use SLAGIT?

You highlight the webpage with the links you want to make a list out of and paste them into the large box in SLAGIT and press the "SLAG IT!" button.

SLAGIT then generate text which can be imported into TSM as a Auctioning Group or Shopping List.

You may be asking "Do I have to copy each link one-by-one into SLAGIT?" the answer is No! The beauty of SLAGIT is that you can copy and paste lots of links into the window and SLAGIT will handle them all with ease.

What Should I Use SLAGIT For?

Whatever you want. One of the common things I use SLAGIT for is creating temporary shopping lists from The Undermine Journal's "Great Deals" page.

Another use I've found for SLAGIT is creating shopping lists for specific item or item sets that I want to make dealfinding lists for.

I used SLAGIT in this way to create my "Uber" Blue TSM Dealfinding lists. (See MoP "Uber" Blue TradeSkillMaster Dealfinding Lists.)

You can use SLAGIT anytime you need to create TSM auctioning groups or shopping lists that include a large numbers of items. This could be for transmog items, crafted items and anything in between.

If you can somehow get a webpage that will show links to the items, SLAGIT will create a auctioning groups or shopping list for it.

An Few Examples

I thought I'd go over a few examples for people so you can see SLAGIT in action.

The two examples I am going to use are building a shopping list for a "Great Deals" page on The Undermine Journal and creating a shopping list for Crafted Dreadful Plate items using links from Wowhead.

While I am giving you a few examples be sure to use your imagination. You'll be amazed at what you can do with SLAGIT. The possibilities are nearly endless.

The Undermine Journal Great Deals

The Undermine Journal has a fantastic "Great Deals" page that shows you items it thinks may be underpriced. This is useful for gold-makers looking to find items that we could flip for a profit.

Using SLAGIT we will quickly generate a TSM shopping list so search for these potentially underpriced items on our server.

The first step is to go to The Undermine Journal and select our server and faction. We then mouse over the "Great Deals" menu item and select "Great Deals" from the sub-menu. (Bookmark the resulting page for easy access in the future.)

Once on the Great Deals page we use our mouse to highlight all the items on the page. You can click hold down your mouse while moving your mouse down the page to hightlight it all.

(We've also noticed that if we start our selection on the right and highlight down and to the left it selectes all the items down the page without having to scroll all the way down.)

Once you have all of the page selected copy the page by pressing Ctrl + C or right-clicking and selecting "Copy".

Once you have the items copied paste them into the first large box under "Step 2" on SLAGIT. The pasted items will look something like this.

As you can see from the image above you simply paste the entire clipboard of items into SLAGIT. It doesn't matter that is has formatting and tables etc. SLAGIT can handle that no problem. All SlAGIT is really looking for is the HTML item links.

Once you we have the page copied into SLAGIT we hit the "SLAGIT NOW!" button. When we hit the button we will be presented with the following type of results.

Above you can see that we are presented with two sets of results.

The first is the text that we would use if we were importing it into TradeSkillMaster as an Auctioning Group.

The second is the text we would use if we were importing the results into TradeSkillMaster as a Shopping List.

Item & Sets From Wowhead

For our second example we're going to create a shopping lists from a set of items that we can find on Wowhead.

For this example I'll be using the Crafted Dreadful Cloth PVP items.

The first thing we need to do is get a Wowhead page with just the items we are looking for.

In this case we will do that by going to Wowhead and mousing over "Database" menu item in the lower left and using our mouse to navigate the cascading drop down menus to Items > Armor > Cloth.

This will get is to a results page with all cloth items.

Once on the results page we will be using a simple "Name" filter to find only the items that have "Crafted Dreadful" in their name.

To do this we type "Crafted Dreadful" into the "Name:" field and press "Apply Filter" below the filter options.

Once you have the results page we highlight all the links and copy them by pressing Ctrl + C or by right-clicking and selecting "Copy".

Just as in the precious example we paste the items into the large window on SLAGIT.

(As you can see we are literally pasting what ever was on the Wowhead page into the SLAGIT window, formatting and all. No need to "clean it up". SLAGIT doesn't mind. All it is looking for are the HTML links to items.)

Once the results are pasted into SLAGIT we press the "SLAGIT NOW!" button and SLAGIT gives us TradeSkillMaster Auctioning Groups and Shopping Lists-importable text.

Importing Shopping Lists Into TSM

So now that we've used SLAGIT to create TSM-importable Shopping Lists and Auctioning Groups how do we actually get them into TSM?

We first open the TSM settings by typing /tsm or clicking the TSM minimap button.

Once in the TSM settings window:

Click the "Shopping Options" icon (aqua and bronze "badge)
Click the words "Shopping Lists" in the left-hand column
Click on the large "Import Shopping List" button.

Once you click Import Shopping List the "TSM_Shopping - Import List" window pops up. In this window we type a name under "List Name" (can be left blank whereupon the list will automatically be named "Imported List") and press "Okay".

We then copy the text that SLAGIT gave us in the "SHOPPING LIST" window and paste it into the "List Data" section of the "TSM_Shopping - Import List" window and press the "Accept" button.

We then press the large "Import List" button to create our new TradeSkillMaster shopping list.

Once the list is imported you can view its contents (as well as add items, remove items etc) by selecting its name from the left-hand column of the Shopping Options page inside TSM options.

Using TSM Shopping Lists to Search

To use the shopping lists we've created to search for items we open the auction house and click on the "TSM" tab at the bottom of the window. (TSM may be the default interface when you open your auction house.)

Once we have TSM open it may open directly to the "Search" tab. If not, press "Search" from the far-left column.

If you don't see a list of shopping lists (white text) and Dealfinding Lists (green text) in the far right column press "Save Searches" from the buttons at the top of the Search pane.

You should see the name of the Shopping List you created in the far-right "Shopping/Dealfinding Lists" column.

To perform a search for your newly created shopping list simply click on the white name of your list in the "Shopping/Dealfinding Lists" column.

TSM will then begin searching for the items on your list. By default TSM may sort the results by the "% Market Value" column.

If you are searching for items from a list you created from The Undermine Journal "Great Deals" page you may want to sort the items by "Price Per Item" to show the cheap items/good deals on top.

To buy an item from a TSM Shopping List search simply select it and press the "Buyout" button.

Building a Auctioning Group

Just as we can build Shopping Lists using SLAGIT we can also build Auctioning Groups. You may want to do this if you're getting into a new market or if you're having to rebuild a group.

In this example we will be building an Auctioning Group for the same Crafted Dreadful Cloth PVP items we used in the above example.

Because we are using the same search results that we put into SLAGIT in the previous example we will be able to simply copy the text in the "AUCTIONING GROUP" box.

Once we've copied the text from inside the "AUCTIONING GROUP" box on SLAGIT we go into our TSM options by typing /tsm or using the TSM minimap button.

Once in TSM Options:

Select the "Auctioning Groups/Options icon (gold coin) in the top left
Select the text "Groups/Categories" from the left column
Select the "Create Group/Category" tab and the top of the right-hand column
Press the "Import Auctioning Group" button.

Pressing the "Import Auctioning Group" button will open the "TSM_Auctioning - Import Group Data" window.

This window works exactly like the Shopping List import window.

Give the Auctioning Group a name and press "Okay". Paste the text you copied from the SLAGIT "AUCTIONING GROUP" window into the "Group Data" box and press "Accept". Press the "Import Auction Group" button.

One difference from the Shopping List import window is the "Don't Import Already Grouped Items" check box.

Much like it says, if this box is checked TSM will not import items that are in groups already. If you are re-making groups and want the items removed from their old groups will will uncheck this box.

Now that your new Auctioning Group has been created it will be listed under the <Uncategorized Groups> heading in the far-left column of the TSM Auctioning Groups/Options" section (golden coin).

To move the newly created group into one of your Auctioning Categories:

Select the Auctioning Category you want to add the new Auctioning Group to from the left-hand column in the TSM Auctioning Groups/Options window.
Select the "Add/Remove Groups" tab at the top of the right-hand column (if it is not already selected).
Click on the new groups name in the left-hand "Uncategorized Groups" column until it is highlighted in yellow.
Click the "Add >>>" button in between the columns.

This will move the groups into the right-hand "Groups in this Category" column and your group will now be added to that category.

You will also want to go into the Group Overrides for your newly created group and set those up as well.

Conclusion

I hope that you will enjoy SLAGIT as much as I have. It really is the fastest way to create TradeSkillMaster Auctioning Group and Shopping Lists from websites.

I use it on almost a daily basis to create TSM Shopping Lists from the Great Deals page on The Undermine Journal.

It is also my go-to tool for creating shopping lists for groups of items like "Uber" Blue items, transmog items and much more.

"Virtual Realms" Combine Auction Houses in 5.4

This is (virtual) insanity. In 5.4 Blizzard may be "fusing" servers together. These "virtual realms" will combine all aspects of the realms together including the Auction House.

Say bye bye to low population server economies. I can't tell yet if this is a good thing or a bad thing. What would it be like if every economy ran like a high population realm's economy?

Has it finally come to this that World of Warcraft has so many low-population servers that is finally has to start merging....I mean "fusing" them together just so players can feel like their playing an actual MMORPG? You know, a Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing game?

(Also, it seems like Blizzard announcing this right after offering 50% off Paid Character Services is kinda a sketchy move.)

New Feature: Virtual Realms

Virtual Realms are sets of realms that are fused together, and will behave exactly as if they were one cohesive realm. Players on the same Virtual Realm will be able to join guilds, access a single Auction House, join arena teams and raids, as well run dungeons or group up to complete quests.

Players belonging to the same Virtual Realm will have a (#) symbol next to their name.

Patch 5.4 PTR Profession Notes - New Cooldowns & PVP Items

MMO Champion has posted new data-mined information from the Patch 5.4 PTR. Read on past the jump for some new profession information Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, Tailoring and Enchanting.

Please be aware that as with all data-mined information there is a chance that none of this will make it to the live game. This is information from the PTR (Public Test Realm) and not the live game. Please note the "test" in Public Test Realm.

That said, this does give us a bit of information on what may be coming in patch 5.4.

It seems that in 5.4 we may be getting a new Crafted PVP sets (Crafted Malevolent). The mat cot for the sets seems to be a bit higher than the current Crafted Dreadful set (12, 15 and 20 vs. 8, 10 and 15 Ghost Iron Bars).

Blacksmiths will be getting a new Daily cooldown that will also teach us new patterns. I wonder if this will work as it did in 5.2 with new Crafted Malevolent items being learned one-pre-day similar to how we learned Crafted Dreadful sets.

This would be a change from how they've done it in Cataclysm for example where PVP patterns automatically upgraded in player's profession book.

If this is true it will mean a whole new cycle of just a few people knowing the patterns and more and more learning them as time goes on.

The "PH" (likely Place Holder) items at the bottom of the list are interesting because while they don't show an item name they do show that they are losing Lightning Steel Ingot as a material and gaining Balanced Trillium Ingot.

Head to the MMO Champion post to mouse over the PH to see the tooltips but it appears the top three PH are plate legs and the bottom three are plate waists.

It seems that Trillium will be used for the new Blacksmithing daily cooldowns. This, along with the current demand for trillium by Alchamists making Living Steel, could help drive the prices of Trillium up.

If I was a stockpiling man (which I rarely am) I may sock a few Trillum Bars away ahead of Patch 5.4 to help meet the demand for these new Blacksmithing cooldowns.

How the Balanced Trillium Ingot recipe is obtained will also be something to watch for.

Enchanting

Many enchants are now instant cast and have no minimum item level, see the WoWDB PTR site if you are interested in a specific enchant!

Interesting. Very interesting. I wonder if "non minimum item level requirement" will mean that these enchantes can be used on Heirloom weapons and armor.

If so there may be a bit of a bump in the enchant markets as players are better able to modify their heirlooms as they level.

Like with the new Blacksmithing Crafted Malevolent items, the Leatherworking Crafted Malevolent items seem to have an increased mat cost from the current Crafted Dreadful (2 and 3 vs. 1 and 2 Magnificent Hides).

In addition it looks like players will be using 2 Magnificent Hides to create a Hardened Magnificent Hide for their daily cooldown. This is liekly how they will learn the Crafted Malevolent items.

I may start picking up low-priced Magnificent hides now to prepare for these new Crafted Malevolent items. Out of all the Crafted Dreadful items I craft Leathworking is by far the most supply-constrained.

With people wanting the new PVP items, unless Blizzard gives us some new easy way to obtain Magnificent Hides I can see the demand for them going up quite high.

As it is my Crafted Dreadful Leatherworking markets are pretty much unprofitable at the moment so I may also simply stockpile the Magnificent Hide I currently make with my daily Magnificence of Leather cooldown.

As with the Blacksmithing "PH" (likely PLace Holder) items these are legs and belts. They have lost Magnificent Hide as a mat and gained Hardened Magnificent Hides.

We have a new daily cooldown for Tailoring (are you seeing a pattern here?) Celestial Cloth. It takes 10 Bolts of Windwool Cloth (up from 8 for Imperial Silk) and also teaches you a new pattern (anyone want to guess Crafted Malevolent?).

(Does anyone else get the feeling that Blizzard making players learn new patterns via daily cooldowns is their way of making crafters stay subbed for a few months just to learn all the patterns?)

As with Leatherworking and Blacksmithing it appears the crafting costs for the Crafted Malevolent PVP items will be going up from Crafted Dreadful (6, 7 and 8 vs. 4, 5 and 6 Bolts of Windwool Cloth).

Conclusion

So there you have it. It seems from all the information above that Tailors, Leatherworkers and Blacksmiths will be getting new daily cooldowns to create new materials and possibly learn the new patterns including the new PVP patterns.

If you're done the current cooldown, new PVP item, craft item, sell item, do cooldown, learn new items, creaft item routine then it seems that 5.4 won't be much of a change at least in the mechanics.

The fact that we might gain some pattern exclusivity early on in the patch is good news.

If special interest was the Magnificent Hide requirements for Leatherworking. As I mentioned above there were many times during these last few patches when I didn't have enough Magnificent Hides to craft the items I needed.

The fact that the cost for Magnificent Hides has remained fairly steady just goes to show me that it may not be a bad idea to stock up on a few extras if I can find them cheap to prepare for patch 5.4.

87-88 MoP Item Sales Analysis & Adjustment

Once I've been working a new market for a while I like to stop and take stock of what's selling and what's not so I can adjust accordingly.

I did this for the "85-89" Mists of Pandaria market that I started preparing for before 5.3 and have since been selling in since Patch 5.3 dropped.

In analyzing this market I came to some conclusions and interesting discoveries that allowed me to adjust my tactics. Head past the jump for more.

Measure Twice

The reason I wanted to get into the "85-89" (now 87-88) market was due to the 30% reduction in experience required to get from level 85-90 that was introduced in Patch 5.3.

My plan was to work the market in a very similar way to my current 83-84 MoP item markets. (See The Big List Of 77-79 & 83-84 Item Flipping Information and My New 85-89 MoP Item Market - Initial Results And Design.)

The first interesting fact I found when researching selling items from level 85-89 was that there was no such thing as a level 89 Bind on Equip item. They don't exist.

I know it sounds strange but BOE items go from 88 straight to 90. This means that I was able to eliminate level 89 items from my searches. Now we were down to level 85-88 items.

Sales Analysis

After selling level 85-88 items for a few weeks I decided to do some analysis to see which of these items were actually selling.

This would (hopefully) allow me to narrow down the items I was selling by eliminating item categories that didn't sell.

The method I used was very similar to how I analyzed my 83-84 item sales. (See Level 83-84 MoP Armor Sales Data And Analysis.)

Adjustments

As you can see from the sales numbers above the level 85 and 86 item sales just don't stack up to the level 87 and 88 sales.

I sold a total of (14) level 85 item and (7) level 86 items. In contrast I sold (43) level 87 items and (57) level 88 items.

With those disparities in mind I decided to stop buying and selling level 85 and level 86 items. I know only buy and sell level 87 and 88 items.

Level 85

So why did I sell so few level 85 items? I think a few factors may have contributed to the low sales.

Many players may simply use their previous level 85 items to start leveling especially if they raided in Cataclysm.

The beginning quest rewards and even the vendor-sold level 85 items may be lower then their raiding gear.

Another reason why level 85 sales may be slow is that there are level 85 crafted Mists of Pandaria armor that is available for purchase often at low prices.

The last reason may be that there are "Adventuring Supplier" NPC vendors that sell level 85 items in many if the starting areas.

Level 86

As for why level 86 items aren't selling I'd imagine that many of the same reasons that the level 85 items aren't selling.

Along with that there is the chance that players don't really see that much of a difference in level 85 and level 86 items.

Another possibility is that the quest rewards when leveling through Mists of Pandaria satisfy player's level 86 item needs.

Level 87 and 88

I was happy to see these item sales numbers. It reinforces my belief that getting into the level 87-88 markets was a good idea.

Since moving exclusively to 87-88 I've been able to lower my inventory by not having to stock level 85 and 86 items that weren't selling.

It also saves me time and money not having to purchase and store extra items and therefore gives me more room to stock up on level 87-88 back stock.

Sales So Far?

So how have my level 87-88 item sales been going since this analysis? Pretty good. I've been able to supplement my 83-84 item sales really well.

I'm selling the 87-88 items for right around the same prices as my level 83-84 items. Buying for 45g for armor, 75 g for weapons. Selling for 245 for non-plate armor, 395 for plate and 1H weapons and 495 for 2H weapons and Hunter weapons.

As mentioned above I think many players are leveling their 85+ alts now that the experience that is required to level from 85-90 has been lowered by 30%. I know I'm leveling mine.

If you're interested in getting into a new market definitely give level 87-88 items a look. You may be surprised how well they sell.

Looking Back - My 250K Gold-Making Milestone

Back in July of 2011 I hit my 250K gold milestone. At the time the place everyone wanted their milestones posted was Warcraft Econ. Warcraft Econ was a blog about gold-making that also allowed people to submit gold-making milestone posts. (These days everyone is welcome to submit their milestone posts to the Community Gold-Making Milestones page.)

Since that time Warcraft Econ has shut down and my original 250K milestone post is no longer accessible. For the sake of posterity (and a bit of nostalgia) I've included the full-text of my original 250K gold milestone post. Read on for a blast from my gold-making past.

Please tell us a little about yourself and your gaming experience.

I am a blogger who writes about making gold in world of warcraft. I’ve been writing my blog, Power Word: Gold, for just over 6 months. In that time I’ve I’ve learned more about blogging than I ever thought I would and have come to know a ton of fantastic people (readers and bloggers) in the gold-making community.

I have been playing World of Warcraft for around 6 years or so. Before WoW I was mainly a console gamer but MMOs have drawn me in in a way no console game ever could. I believe it’s the community aspect of an MMO that really appeals to me. Even though I consider myself predominantly a solo player just having others around me in a game world makes it feel more alive.

Do you raid or PvP most? Both? How do you enjoy the game?

I did some light raiding in The Burning Crusade and early Wrath of the Lich King and enjoyed it very much but for the most part I’ve been a solo and small-group player. I enjoy leveling and learning about all of the different classes and class mechanics. I currently have (9) level 85 characters and am working on leveling my 10th level 85 (one of every class) on my main server. I thoroughly enjoy 5-man dungeons and am lucky as my wife plays World of Warcraft as well. We are often able to do dungeons together. I times I’ve gotten into PVP but in general I enjoy PVE the most.

Why did you choose to collect this amount of gold?

Honestly It just sort of “snuck up” on me. When I started writing my gold blog I think the most I could ever remember having at one time was 40K. I certainly didn’t let the fact I hadn’t reached a huge gold milestone keep me from blogging about gold-making but as I saw others in the community reach their gold-making goals it made me feel a little “behind the curve”. I never actively had a set gold milestone in mind but over time my enjoyment of the gold-making process just naturally produced an increase in my total gold (imagine that.) I enjoy the act of gold-making and the mental exercise of always finding ways to “make the sale”.

How did you go about getting to this gold amount? Any creative or original ideas?

I am not really the type of gold-maker who has detailed bookkeeping records of how I made every single gold. That said being a blogger (and doing a 2 hour gold-making podcast each week) has helped me at least be aware of what methods have worked best for me in gold making. Below are the major gold-making areas that have worked for me from the last 6 months or so.

Jewelcrafting – Raw Cataclysm Uncommon and Rare gems. A large percentage of my gold has been made by working this one market. Prospecting Obsidium Ore and finding just the right price for the raw gems has been one of my favorite markets for all of Cataclysm. There aren’t many markets where I feel as comfortable as I do selling these gems. While I have a good variety of Rare gem cuts I still tend to lean toward working the raw side of the market for the most part.

Vendor Items – I make a surprising amount of my gold by selling vendor-bought items. While in the past I’ve gone as far as to do “supply runs” of vendors in places like Outlands and “Vanilla” areas like Booty Bay for the most part the majority of my income for NPC items has come from selling vendor pets with the majority of them lately being the 3 sold in Dalaran. With the portals placed back in Dalaran to Stormwind and Ogrimmar I have a good number of my character’s Hearthstones set in Dalaran. The thing I enjoy about the Dalaran pets is the ease of restocking and the high profit margins. These have really picked up in the last month or so. Other pets I tend to keep in stock are the Wintersaber Cubs as well as the pets available at Stormspire in Netherstorm. All of these NPC vendor items are set up in TradeSkillMaster groups and selling them is pretty much an automated process at this point.

Engineering – Although I often hear players say they don’t find Engineering profitable I’ve found that selling engineering items has provided me with a good mount of gold in Cataclysm. The main sellers for me are Handful of Obsidium Bolts and Electrified Ether. I started selling these early on in Cataclysm and the demand and prices has never dropped. I maintain a price of 17-19g each for Handful of Obsidium Bolts and 47-54g each for Electrified Ether. This is one of my markets where I never seem to have sort of steady competition. Because I’ve been working the market so long I know that my items will sell and what prices to sell them for. As an amusing side note one day I picked up around 1000 Handful of Obsidium Bolts (crafting accident?) off the auction house for 2.5g each. I’ve been steadily working them back into the market for the last few months at nothing less than 17g each. Other engineering items that have perked up as of late are Handful of Cobalt Bolts (12-17g each) and Overcharged Capacitors (75-85g each).

What items are in your Snatch list?

Cheap Obsidium/Elementium Ore (under 30g/stack). For shuffling purposes.

Volatile Life (under 8g each). Used to supply my (4) Transmute-Specced Alchemists daily Living Elements Transmutes.

“Justice Point” boots selling in trade (500g or under). I consistently flip these for 1500-2000g+ still.

How did you learn to do it? Anyone or resource you would like to thank?

The Undermine Journal’s “frontpage” (before they shut down the first time) that listed a large number of gold-making blogs was the first place I found out there was even such a thing as a “gold blog”. I started off (like many people) by reading the blogroll at Just My Two Copper. From there I found Alto’s Goldish Advice, Cold’s Gold Factory and Nerf Faids. I’d have to say my early experiences were most influenced by those three blogs. When I decided to start blogging about gold-making I was thrown into a whole new world of gold-making ideas and (much like the Borg) have tried to “assimilate” as many gold-making tips as I can. Not every strategy is a fit for my own personal gold-making style but I’m fascinated by how others are making their gold.

I would like to thank all those in the gold-making community who share their time and effort writing gold-making blogs. I’d also like to thank all those who read my own blog and offer encouragement and share their own gold-making wisdom with me.

What addons, if any, do you use to help you make gold and why are they needed?

Auctioneer – The “grand daddy” of all gold-making addons. I use this for all my AH scan data as well as the “Appraiser” tab for quickly listing items in my bags I may not otherwise know I have available to auction.

Auctionator – My new favorite addon for posting one-off items due to it’s ability to quickly choose which of the current auctions to undercut. Also indispensable for it’s shopping lists feature which I use for monitoring gem markets as well as important tasks like knowing which of the “Justice Point” boots are available at the time, etc.

TradeSkillMaster – An absolutely indespensable part of my efforts to save time via automating many of my markets. I use TSM groups for listing all my glyphs as well as vendor items. TSM is worth it alone for it’s ability to scan and purchase herbs used in crafting glyphs.

Altoholic – Used when resupplying vendor items as well as coordinating mats across multiple characters. When you have 10 characters with 20 max-level professions it pays to know which particular materials are on which particular character. Couldn’t live without it.

Are you still going for more gold? If so, do you have a new goal? Are you close?

I’m more of a “tortoise” rather than a “hare” when it comes to gold-making. The act of making gold is my fascination. What makes markets tick. How to find just the right angle or discover a new market on my server. I believe my gold balance will continue to climb as I tend to work in such as way that I don’t have many large expenditures etc. That said I could see myself hitting 500K in a few months. I’m not actively pushing for it though.

Do many people know you have this amount of gold?

Not on my server. I generally don’t talk to anyone on my server about my gold. As far as outside the game I haven’t made my gold totals public up until this point have. I think part of it was feeling inadequate as I saw readers of my blog and other bloggers reaching much higher gold milestones than myself. As someone who blogs about making gold I guess I felt a bit of pressure to “prove myself” by having some huge amount of gold. I have since gotten over my initial trepidation about talking about my gold totals. While I don’t think I’ll worry bringing it up again (at least not until I feel I’ve reached another significant milestone) at least I don’t feel ashamed or defensive anymore when someone asks me how much gold I have.

Did you spend your gold on fun things? What have you bought? What things would you like to buy?

My wife let me know that to celebrate my 250K I needed to buy her a chopper. Besides that I’m still fairly frugal with my gold. I still think items like Vial of the Sands are just too expensive. Perhaps I’ll feel different if/when I reach 500K.

If you were the professor of a gold making 101 college class, what would be some things you would talk about?

It takes time to make gold. While markets may go up and down you need to put in the time at the auction house to learn how to make gold. Once you’ve put in your time and you have your own gold-making system in place you will be prepared to capitalize on sea changes in markets brought about by patches, new content, hotfixes etc.

How about an advanced gold making class?

Building your crafting alts is never a waste of time or resources. While it is not a necessity to know everything about every market having your crafting alts set with maxed professions will allow you to take the fullest advantage of new tips, tricks and techniques you learn from around the gold-making community. Being diversified in this way will also cushion you a bit from stark changes brought into markets due to patches, hotfixes or market shifts.

Do you have good farming strategies or spots?

Sethria’s Roost in Mt. Hyjal (pre-Firelands daily phasing) is my favorite spot for farming Blackened Dragonscales. I purposefully didn’t do Firelands dailies on one of my skinners just so I could keep this spot accessible.

Deepholm is my choice for farming Elementium and Obsisium Ore when prices spike above my threshold. I also farm herbs in Deepholm when Volatile Life prices spike above my threshold.

What was the best deal you ever came across?

I picked up Sylvanas’ Music Box for 6k in trade chat. I was able to flip it for 25K a few weeks later.

Do you remember any of your worst deals?

Picking up the Enchant Bracer Major Strength early on in Cataclysm for 10K. One of my biggest regrets to this day. This one mistake has shaped my gold-making since. I am much more careful to research high-risk gold-making techniques like this before attempting them. “Measure twice. Cut once.” and “Look before you leap.” are both maxims I live by now.

What are your future plans with WoW?

As long as I find enjoyable things to do in the game I plan to continue playing. With 10 high level characters and 30 possible talent specs to choose from there is always something new to try. (My latest endeavor has been to learn to play a Retribution Paladin. So far I’ve had limited success.)

Luckily for me gold-making is an activity that provides endless amounts of enjoyment and new experiences . As long as there is gold in the game I’ll continue to keep working to make it.

What are you predictions for the future WoW economy?

I believe a big growth-market for the game will be the players who are coming back to World of Warcraft. I’ve had good success selling items that these returning player’s need such as level 77-80 green Cataclysm items as well as mid-level Cataclysm enchants. While much of the talk about WoW revolves around end-game raiding (especially now with a new raid tier just released with Patch 4.2) I believe the population of returning players most likely outweighs the number of raiders.

Please tell us a little bit about how you handle your real life finances. What are the differences and similarities with how you do things in WoW?

The great thing about a fantasy world like World of Warcraft is that we get to play out our fantasies. This includes monetary fantasies of “being rich” and “successful”. Unfortunately Blizzard hasn’t yet figured out a way for us to pay real-life bills with in-game gold. Until that day I’ll have to just be happy with the fact that in at least one aspect of my life (albeit a virtual one) I’m “well-off” so to speak. (Plus I always have a job in World of Warcraft.)

My New 85-89 MoP Item Market - Initial Results And Design

Just a quick post to say that, at least initially, the 85-89 Mists of Pandaria item market I decided to take a gamble on right before Patch 5.3 seems to be paying off.

The reason I got into this market was because the XP required to level from 85-90 was reduced buy 33%. This means more people leveling and thus more people buying weapons and armor from the auction house.

So Far

The image above is from the mailbox of my 85-89 MoP seller. So far the market seems to fairly robust. I can't wait to see the results from the weekend as I normally make more flipping sales over the weekend.

The Market

What I am buying and for how much:

85 Mists of Pandaria non-crafted armor that is 45g and under.
85 Mists of Pandaria non-crafted weapons that are 75g and under with the exception of 1H caster weapons (wands, daggers and maces).
86-89 armor for 45g and under.

Sounds Familiar

If the above settings sound familiar it is because I based my new 85-89 Mists of Pandaria markets on my original work on my 83-84 Mists of Pandaria item markets.

Pricing is about the same. I buy items in the same way (Auctioneer Saved Searches).

The changes are making the minimum item level to 390 and making one search with the level range 85-85 (I do my 85 searches separately to better ignore crafted items) and 86-89.

Caveats

If you do decide to work in level 85 items you have to be sure not to purchase crafted items. These can be readily undercut by competition. You're much better off sticking to dropped items.

If you're not sure if a item type is crafted look it up on Wowhead or check your tooltips for a source (some addons show items crafted by certain professions).

If you are on a high population realm know that there may be tons of these items up for sale under my prices. If that is the case think about being more picky about the items you buy.

I can say that Plate and 2-Handed weapons are a good place to start if you're on a high popluation realm.

As always the items that are "...of the Whale", "...of the Beast", and plate items, 2-Handed swords and shields "...of the Tiger" are terrible and should be avoided.

The Future?

So will the 85-89 market be as robust as the 83-84 MoP item market? Time will tell. If it end up petering out I'll simply abandon the market and vendor the items.

Best-case scenario I've found a new market for myself.

Markets I'm Abandoning

Every once and a while it is a good idea to take a step back from your gold-making and evaluate which markets are working and which might need to be put out to pasture.

After the jump I go over a few markets I've decided aren't worth my time anymore.

These are the markets that I am abandoning. (Note: These markets may still work just fine on your server and faction.)

Transmog

I just haven't sold enough items to justify the time and expense of posting transmog gear anymore.

The current competitors are welcome to the market.

I'll be giving all my stock to April to pick through after which I'll see if I want to use any for my own transmog and fire-sale or disenchant the rest.

Low-Level Leather

This market included leather items level 19-76 that included Agility (originally Intellect as well). While I have sold some items, the market is just too slow.

Trying to apply the principles of markets like 77-80 Cata an 83-84 MoP to low level item markets was an solid idea. It just didn't pan out.

Crafted Dreadful Cloth PVP Items

Too much competition. If I wanted to babysit the auction house I might make some sales. I don't.

As with many crafted markets when your competition can simply conjure up as much stock as they want the undercuts will flow.

I'll stick to flipping mob-dropped items. While you can farm mobs to obtain these drops the chance you'll get the exact same item as I'm selling is fairly low.

Conclusion

The idea of letting my competition "have" a market is a hard pill to swallow but in the long run it will be for the best.

By getting out of markets that are unproductive you free up time that you can use to find new markets or better tend markets that actually are bringing in gold.

After all, it's not personal. It's just business.

Kiryn & Riko: An Undead + Monkey Love Story

I level characters. A lot of characters. In Mists of Pandaria I do that mostly through questing. Every once in a while Blizzard makes a quest chain so epic that you savor doing it every time.

The Horde quest chain in The Jade Forest where we are introduced to Kiryn, Riko and the rest of the Horde "A-Team" is hilarious and surprisingly touching.

Patch 5.3 So Far (New Markets And Re-Posts)

What have I been doing since Patch 5.3 landed today? Posting a new market I'm experimenting with (85-89 Mists of Pandaria gear) and re-posting lots of Crafted Dreadful Gladiator gear of all types (Cloth, Leather, Mail and Plate).

I just get the impression that lots of people will be looking for PVP gear to try out the new PVP changes. I also think many people will have held of on leveling their alts until the 33% XP reduction for levels 85-90. Those people will be looking in the Auction House for leveling gear.

Some initial 85-89 sales. So far so good.
