Power Girl Captured by Doctor Doom

This is my latest illustration - for sale on eBay now. I haven't drawn a Doctor Doom in years, and this drawing is inspired by one of my favorite comics as a kid, Spidey Super Stories #31. It was a take on Star Wars, Spidey style. Moondragon played the Princess Leia part. Doctor Doom was in the villainous Darth Vader role. The story crossed the Death Star and Jaws and produced the ultimate weapon — Star Jaws, which was basically the Death Star with teeth. It threatened to swallow the Earth, but Spidey and friends save the day. In this illustration, Star Jaws is going after Earth 2, Power Girl's home planet.

I suddenly realized the timeliness of these illustrations given that Clash of the Titans in theaters now. In these drawings, Medusa has surprised Supergirl, Huntress and Mary Marvel. She has added the three heroines to her trophy room. I'm guessing only Perseus can save them.

Ms. Marvel (Dark Avenger Version) Original Artwork

This is the Moonstone (Karla Sofen) version of the Ms. Marvel character, currently appearing in the Dark Avengers title. Actually, I've always preferred this version of the Ms. Marvel costume. It's derived from the second Captain Marvel costume, but I always found it very iconic. Carol Danvers wore the original version of this outfit all the way to issue #19 of her first comic book series. Issue #20 debuted the costume we all know today.

I have no grand New Year's post yet, but — I have been going through my Netflix Instant Streaming queue while I draw. Here's how I spent my week . . .

Rise: Blood Hunter

I've heard a lot of people toss on this movie, but I liked it. It wasn't anything ground-breaking, but it wasn't crap either. I did think it was a perfect waste of a good Carla Gugino. She's a leading lady, people. But Lucy Liu is pretty interesting here - and I had no problems with her as the main character. I was surprised to see Michael Chiklis in this, too — along with weird cameos by Robert Forster, Nick Lachey and Marilyn Manson(!)

Humpday

I knew nothing about this one. It is a low budget indy about two old college friends. They meet up after years of not seeing each other, and we see the different paths each has taken. There's a proposed project/dare between them that really makes up the plot, but the outcome seems pretty natural without being predictable. I'd like to see more work from the guy who played Ron. Something tells me he could play a great villain.

House Bunny

Anna Faris is extremely likable. While most of the other characters in this piece are supposed to come off as caricatures, we get to spend more time with Faris, and she really sells the character. The only other thing I've seen her in was Observe and Report, and I thought she was hilarious in that. She's one to watch and is definitely the best thing about this movie.

Murder by Death

Ever seen this movie? It's short, clean and awesome. It stars the likes of Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness, Peter Falk, David Niven, James Coco, James Cromwell, Elsa Lanchester (the Bride of Frankenstein herself!), Nancy Walker and Truman Capote. It's a Neil Simon production with the above mentioned actors portraying classic detective archetypes (Charlie Chan, Miss Marples, Sam Spade, Nick and Nora Charles, Hercule Poirot) It's comedy, and these actors make some of the goofiest lines hilarious. Also - Charles Addams (creator of the Addams Family) did the poster art and intro/outro art.

Artistic Inspiration: Michael Golden

One of the first artists I noticed as having a very unique style was Michael Golden. He drew The Micronauts — a title I didn't start reading until later in the run, around issue 24 or 25. Hooked on the concept, I hunted down the back issues, finally picking up the illusive numbers 8 and 12 at Heroes Con back in the 80’s. Those first 12 issues, as told by Bill Mantlo and Golden, tell the saga of the first fall of Baron Karza, and they are awesome.

Micronauts 1-12:

What is impressive to me, is how Golden took concepts given to him by Mattel, and expanded on those ideas. There were the company’s characters - like Baron Karza, Acroyear, Biotron, Microtron - built-in designs that must be humanized to some degree. Then, he created other characters to fill the void of generalized action figures - Galactic Warrior, for example. Galactic Warrior becameBug, a fully realized character from a race of Insectivorids.Then there were original creations, like Commander Arcturus Rann and Princess Mari - designs that seem to have always existed side-by-side with Mattel’s creations.

Around these characters, he designed the Microverse, a fantastic, sci-fi Camelot that had the lush otherworldly feel of seventies fantasy. The battles fought in these settings felt incredibly organic, and I prefer the Microverse opposed to the time the Micronauts spent on Earth. But Golden’s dynamic art always makes it interesting to watch.

Through the saga, the characters are introduced to Professor Prometheus, Man-Thing, Captain Universe and others. The Micronauts are triumphant in issue 11, but I love the final, brutal blood duel between brothers in issue 12 as Golden shows the last violent showdown between Acroyear and his brother Shaitan. The imagery is blunt, memorable. There is a power to the battle that makes you feel the impact of the warhammers each brother dons. To me, it is a befitting cap to Golden’s run on this title.

Avengers Annual 10:

This is still my favorite issue drawn by Golden.

The issue introduces us to Rogue, who has never looked more evil than she does here. It also presents an array of characters in a light I had never seen before. Janet Van Dyne in casual everyday wear. Spider Woman sticking to the police department wall, having a cup of coffee. Iron Man talking on the phone, slipping on his gloves. Casual moments. Characters living in a very lived-in world. Not constant battle imagery, but everyday, walk-of-life stills where the characters are just there, breathing. Not to say the action scenes aren’t great. They’re unbelievable. Captain America getting tossed through a brick wall. Mystique firing her machine gun at Spider Woman as the bullets riddle off of Iron Man’s chest. Scarlet Witch conjuring a giant earth sculpture to smother Pyro’s fiery phoenix. It’s all so inventive.

These are only two of the works Golden has presented us over the years, but they were very influential for me. As I have said, his amoebic style produces a universe that feels alive yet steeped in fantasy. There are other issues of Golden’s that made a major impact on me, but I’ll save those for another post.

The Huntress - Now In Color!

I'm coloring some of my older pieces. In this Huntress scan, I've only put in the flats so far — next I'll start putting in some grads, shadows and start adding dimension.

I'm using Photoshop for this process, but I'm thinking about trying Illustrator for coloring a couple of these pieces. I'm not sure what advantage it would have yet, beyond vectorizing the artwork, but we'll see —

The original Huntress (Helena Wayne) was always my favorite, and the classic Paul Levitz/Joe Staton stories are not to missed!

Iron Man vs. Baron Karza

I've always loved the Micronauts. I've always loved Iron Man's old armor. And there you go. Here's hoping someday, someway, Marvel can regain the Micronauts license so this scene could actually happen.
