On a surprisingly hot summers day in July, 500 eager business attendees gathered at the NEC for this year’s FacetimeUK Exhibition Masterclass. Now in its third year the packed day served up fun, informative and inspirational presentations and speakers, not forgetting some fantastic catering. Lucy talks Preston and plastic containers

I’ve made visits to Preston on a number of occasions since the acquisition

of Alison Handling last year, a delightful trip on the M6 I’m sure many of you will agree! I’m always impressed by the enthusiasm in the office and variety of products available for purchase, the knowledge of the team is priceless but I suppose that’s what you get for being in the industry for 30 years.

People often ask what’s changed since the merger last year, what are Alison Handling now doing differently. What AHS do they do very well and it’s quite niche. They understand their focus, how many warehouses can you go to and select from a huge array of products, the exact piece of equipment to use, with no minimum order and next day delivery? If you were unable to tune in to BBC breakfast last Wednesday you will have missed our reusable fish trays making an appearance next to the famous red sofa.

BBC Breakfast reporter Steph McGovern reported live from Grimsby docks, bringing the spot light to Grimsby where she spoke to local businesses regarding the up and coming referendum and how this could affect the fish industry. Steph spoke to various fisherman and market tradesmen to discuss both sides of opinion on the EU referendum.

PPS’s reusable fish trays are a daily feature in the local fish market with the catch of the day being stored before selling, you can spot Steph in amongst our famous yellow trays. They were also spotted proudly sitting at each end of the red sofa making a fantastic focal point.

Here at PPS we have developed longstanding and established relationships within the fish industry in Grimsby to provide returnable packaging solutions, preventing waste packaging entering the supply chain. We have worked with the fish industry for nearly 30 years supplying and washing reusable fish boxes and equipment.

Andy treks China for charity

As you may be aware PPS’s Operations Director Andy Flynn will be taking a journey across to China with fellow volunteers to tackle the Great Wall of China.

Training hard Andy has been preparing physically and mentally for what lies ahead in China. Whilst he is physically active being involved in the air cadets and taking part in numerous Duke of Edinburgh awards, preparation will be key. Walking in humid heats with no toilet facilities on the wall the hike will be no casual stroll.

However it is important to be aware of the reasons behind such a big excursion. Andy will be raising money for the Boparan Charitable Trust who support children with disabilities, life-limiting conditions or are in extreme poverty. Last month PPS Midlands had the pleasure of presenting Liam Hallet who suffers with autism, a specialist trike to help him keep active.

Liam has trouble speaking and with his movement due to autism, the specially designed trike will give him the opportunity to interact with other children and play outside as well as strengthening his limbs.

The BoparanCharitable Trust provide such aid to children on a daily basis, this makes the gruelling trek along the Great Wall of China so important, to raise money to fund such aid. Andy will also be placing a commemorative brick on the wall in Liams name.

PPS takes home packaging prize.

The stage was set for PPS to present to the judges at this years EcoPack Challenge on Wednesday 24th February. Taking place during the Packaging Innovations Exhibition at the NEC, a show dedicated to sustainable packaging solutions it was the ideal platform to showcase the Re-Fresh box.

Four products were shortlisted for the event in a Dragons Den meets packaging style format. Sales Manager Andrew Lee had the pleasure of leading the presentation to the judges and attendees at the EcoPack theatre before Joanne Moss, Managing Director joined the stage for questions from the packed floor. The judges included Laura Fernandez, Packaging Technologist from Marks & Spencer, Jonathan Couper, Packaging Development Manager from 2 Sisters Food Group and Mark Shayler, Sustainable Design Consultant, Lecturer in the Circular Economy and Design, Royal College of Art.

The Re-Fresh box provides a full solution to supply chain packaging and incorporates sustainable services as well as the actual product through the pooling and rental options available from PPS.

We’re thrilled to announce that PPS were named winners of the challenge and we now look forward to developing the product with Marks and Spencer. It was a fantastic opportunity to highlight how supply chains can be revolutionised with the implementation of reusable packaging.

Hygienic Swab Testing

Here at PPS one of our primary focuses is on the washing we provide to our customers. In this blog we give you an insight into the science behind us achieving the highest quality of washing standards for our food industry clients.

Alongside our state of the art industrial wash machines, we operate a swab system to keep track of our wash standards to ensure hygiene is always maximised. The most frequent swab tests that we carry out are ATP swabs, these are completed on site. Our BRC accreditation requires us to perform ATP Swab tests 4 times a shift however, we can swab test equipment more regularly at the request of a customer. These give an overall cleanliness rating for the washed equipment. The rating is measured in Relative Light Units (RLU’s,) a large proportion of the food industry manufacturers use these as on site tests also. We conduct external lab swab tests where we test for various bacterial hazards.

Thinking Outside the Re-Fresh Box

The idea for our lidded Re-Fresh box was developed having received feedback from the fish industry in order to supply a reusable container for prepared fillets to the catering industry and food manufacturers. With the initial trials focused on fresh fish supply chains the units are now available to all industries and the possibilities for product storage are endless.

The leak proof lidded containers are available in two sizes and can be hygienically washed through our brand new BRC approved industrial wash machine. Available for purchase or rental, we’re always thrilled to receive customer feedback and hear what great things our containers have been up to.

Herbs “The best air tight containers I have used. Strong, stackable, washable and in my opinion designed to bounce not crack when dropped an all-round great buy.”

Prepared meat “Ideal for us to take our butchers produce to farmers markets.”

2015 in pictures

As 2015 now draws to a close it is time to look back on the year here at PPS. It has been an eventful 2015, we began the year settled into our premises here at Marchington.

With new members of the PPS team starting throughout the year, our sales team grew in April with Hannah joining as Sales Advisor, handling enquiries and quotes along with social media and marketing aspects. After a busy Easter period the spring drew to a close and we welcomed summer with open arms, the accounts department greeted Diane to their team as Accounts Administrator to handle invoicing and credit control.

Into summer the temperature are really started to hot up as we prepared for the Meat Up exhibition held at Stoneleigh park, it happened to fall on the hottest few days of the year. An event for the whole meat industry to come together to see the latest innovations and technology alongside competitions.

During August Charlotte was introduced to the Operations department working alongside Andy Moss our Operations Manager in running the day to day logistics of deliveries and collections, booking in drivers and handling stock control from our 24/7 wash site. We also redesign our lorry curtains which are part of the Jeffreys Haulage fleet.

As the summer drew to a close we were thrilled to announce the news of PPS acquiring Alison Handling Services, an exciting venture increasing the services of the PPS group. Alison Handling stocks 1000’s of plastic products suitable for a multitude of industries from bakery trays to pallet boxes to plastic dollys, all available on a next day delivery.

In September PPS attended the Movers and Storers show, a key exhibition in the Removals Industry held at Silverstone racetrack. The show was held over two days and consisted of keynote seminars held in the learning zone. Another successful event enjoying the company of both new and current customers. We also had the pleasure of staying in a Snoozebox, a 40ft container made into four bedrooms perfect for short stays.

September was a huge month for our Grimsby operation with the move to our new warehouse facility, almost tripling the size of our wash site. To celebrate, our open day was held to coincide with the World Seafood Congress of which we had the pleasure of welcoming Pete Ward, CEO of Youngs to cut the ribbon.

After introducing our Re-Fresh box to the fish industry in May at the Seafood Expo in Brussels, it was then released for purchase, rental and wash to industries including food, automotive and pharmaceutical. A brand new machine was also installed design to specifically wash the new box and lid to BRC standards.

With an increased focus on waste throughout 2015, it is sure to continue to receive strong focus into 2016. Our MD Joanne Moss spoke with Food Manufacture to discuss returnable transit packaging in the food industry, inevitably reducing waste in the supply chain. Click here to read the article.

Grimsby factory tours in pictures- The Wash Site

Since our expansion to a larger site, we give you this opportunity to visit the premises via a virtual tour around the factory in our latest series of blogs.

We wash around 50,000 trays and boxes used by seafood processing factories and fish suppliers for transporting fresh fish. Our boxes are also used for fish being sold on Grimsby fish auction market each week.

We also wash plastic pallets, bulk bins & tubs, fish smoking racks, freezing spacers and sometimes filters from smoking kilns along with our new ReFresh box which has its own specialist BRC washing machine.

It’s not just fish, Grimsby also wash equipment for the food industry.

Despite the high numbers of crates washed, PPS pride ourselves on the highest standard of hygiene using our BRC accredited wash plant.

Dirty crates are swiftly dispensed on to the machine belt with a box being washed through our machine every 30 seconds.

Once cleaned they are removed and stacked.

To protect the crates from being soiled in transport, they are placed on to a pallet wrapper, ready for dispatch.

Once wrapped the stack is barcoded ready for collection.

Grimsby factory tours in pictures- The Office

Delve into our PPS office on this factory tour.

As you enter the Grimsby office via our reception area, here you find our BRC certificate proudly displayed along with a range of artwork. The artwork on display demonstrates our warehouse facilities and reusable plastic packaging, this is also where visitors can signed in. The visitor hatch is also located in our reception area where you will be met by Paul Durrant our Operations Manager.

Moving on inside the office you will be greeted by the operations team. They are the first port of call for visitors. Operations is easily accessible from reception making it ideal for handling equipment movement.

The office is set out as an open plan environment making it easy for the team to work together efficiently, whist having their own space to work on their individual tasks.

Moving around the office, finance is located to one end of the room making it more practical to deal with confidential matters.

The last area is sales and marketing, here the team handle pooling, washing and fish box sales along with social media and other aspects of the business.

Our break out areas include an office room with desks for private working and meeting room.

Bright Star Ball

PPS were delighted to attend the 4^th annual Bright Star Ball on Saturday 7^th November in support of the Boparan Charitable Trust. The glamorous event was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London featuring a star studded itinerary.

Guests were treated to a champagne reception followed by a top class three course meal, all before a line-up of top performers including Jack Carroll, Sam Bailey and Tom Jones. Presenter duties for the evening were courtesy of Jack Whitehall, successful comedian and actor and last seen as the face of ITV’s rugby world cup adverts.

The charity has held a number of fund raising events throughout the year and the ball was no exception. Johnnie Gould, the UK’s number one auctioneer took responsibility for running a successful auction on the night. The lots included a South African Surprise, Golfers Delight, Meet and Greet with Amir Khan and an Equipment Pledge which gave the gift of mobility to those in need.

The team at PPS had a great evening and would like to wish everyone involved in next years charity challenges the best of luck, including our very own Operations Director taking on the Great Wall of China.

Hannah talks Movers and Storers Show, and those Snoozeboxes!

On Monday 14^th September both Lucy and I were on route to the Movers and Storers Show. After hearing so many fantastic things regarding the show from the previous years I was glad to be seeing what all the fuss was about.

We set up our stand and checked into our Snoozebox hotel, this a small and ultramodern design to transform your over night stay. The overall concept of the Snoozebox started life as a 40ft container split into four contemporary pods, sleeping 3 people in just a 10ft x 10ft space. Cosy you may say, comprising of a double bed with a single bunk above and ensuite shower room. The design is innovative and provides a cost- effective solution for temporary accommodation.

The Movers and Storers Show is always the perfect opportunity for PPS Crate Hire to showcase it's rental services. Show organisers Amino events did a fantastic job creating a vibe with social media before and throughout the event and developed a successful learning zone and competitions.

Overall we received a vast amount of interest and held a great stand location. It was fantastic to meet so many knowledgeable people from industry and I am already looking forward to attending next year’s event. Hannah Swinson, Sales Advisor, PPS Crate Hire.

The perfect day for a round of golf.

The belfry Golf Club was the venue to hold this year’s Boparan charity golf day organised by Two Sisters Food Group. Thirteen teams were privileged to play on the fairways of the award winning Brabazon course.

PPS were thrilled to sponsor the event and provide a team for the golf challenge. Jeremy Tutt Finance Director, with Paul Durrant Operations Manager attended with newly acquired Alison Handling Services Director Ray Hawley and previous Managing Director Tony Deardon. Joanne Moss (Managing Director) and Andy Flynn (Operations Director) joined for the evening celebrations.

The event consisted of a day’s golf at the Belfry, followed by an evening’s entertainment by the legend that is Tony Christie who performed 5 of his hits.

Finance Director Jeremy boasted to be the only person to putt the ball in to 10^th hole.

Managing Director Joanne Moss who attended the evening’s reception said ‘The evening was a well-planned event with great entertainment but most of all raising money for a great cause.’

We thank Two Sisters Food Group for inviting us to the event. We are already looking for next year’s fundraiser.

On the move with our own crates

The end of July saw our PPS East branch pack up and move over the road to a new warehouse facility boasting over 70,000 sq. ft. of internal space. The move from the existing 20,000 sq. ft. unit will enable the group continued growth and service the ever increasing demand in Returnable Transit Packaging. You might think it would have been an easy job as we have only moved over the road, but moving an operational wash facility and office comes with its challenges.

Our operations team have spent months on site with contractors refurbishing what was an unused warehouse space into an environment that could be used for hygienically washing plastic food and fish crates to a BRC standard. Contractors worked tirelessly including over weekends to ensure we experienced as little down time as possible, this can always be tricky when you are operating 24/7.

Being a provider of reusable plastic crates to the removals industry has great benefits when you are moving yourself. With PPS2 standard crates being used for personal desk items, PPS3 metre crates for filling system and C2 IT crates for computers and accessories, it’s safe to say the move went to plan.

We look forward to welcoming customers and suppliers to our open event on Wednesday 9^th September to raise a glass to our new chapter.

Each week we help a variety of customers when it comes to washing their crates during busy seasonal periods, prime at the moment is fresh produce. Food producers have spent so much time nurturing their goods, and putting it into dirty containers could lead to contamination and spoiling.

Fresh produce crates often arrive in various states of soiling with anything from dried tomato seeds, blood, dirt and fats. The boxes are then washed to high food industry standards, did you know we are approved by the BRC in storage and distribution? To ensure both parties are happy with the equipment washing we will run a small trial on the crates, we’re sure you’ll be impressed!

Colour Obstacle Rush

PPS Marchington is located minutes away from the town of Uttoxeter which provides ideal transport links to major motorway connections for us to despatch returnable packaging thoughout the UK. Saturday 4^th July saw the idyllic area host an event that is taking the world by storm. The Colour Obstacle Rush was originally founded in Finland in 2014 and has toured Finland, Germany, UK and USA in 2015, pit stopping at Uttoxeter Race Course. Combining a powdered colour run and obstacles sounded like a great afternoon out for the sales team at PPS.

With our clean white colour rush t-shirts and sunglasses on, all that stood in front of us was a distance of 5k, 10 inflatable obstacles and 9 colour stations. With the sun shining we were soon through the foam pit, over the hurdles and climbing the finishing tower before sliding into one final pool of paint powder.

It was a great to support the local areas activities, and having showered and cleaned out all the paint from our hair we are back in the office for a new week of washing, repairing, renting and selling.

Still using single trip packaging?

During our most recent exhibition at Meatup, one concerning fact became apparent. Whilst I stood watching the goings on of the show I couldn’t help but notice the vast amount of polystyrene boxes transporting meat in and out of the competition area. After thinking that companies are moving away from single trip packaging and being more conscious of the environment, we were surprised that there is still a vast amount of polystyrene being used in industries.

A helping hand with a crate donation

At PPS we stock both new and used returnable packaging whether it be plastic or metal equipment. Our product range allows us to offer customers the most suitable products for their application. As part of our crate hire rental our North West depot is located at Britannia Anchor Removals who do a lot of charity work for their local area. When we were contacted by Emmaus in Salford for storage options on recommendation by Britannia Anchor we knew it was something we could help with.

Emmaus Salford are a small charity founded in 2007. In 2009 they opened their first shop on Seaford Road in Salford selling recycled and refurbished furniture and household items. With the shop now growing and the charity receiving donations the storage they had in place meant items were becoming damaged in cardboard boxes that were getting crushed. In order to maximise the space when not in use it was important that we could offer them a crate that not only stacks but nests when empty. The items they were looking to organise were household bric-a-brac for which we had the ideal crate. The used 60 litre, 600x400x330mm stack/ nesting plastic crate would be suitable to hold a number of items and prevent the contents becoming damaged. We are thrilled to report that since collecting, Emmaus Salford have manage to rearrange their storage area and the reusable plastic crates are a perfect box.

Crates on TV

Did you spot them? PPS equipment has been appearing on BBC programs over the last few weeks, popping up on Mary Berry’s Absolute Favourites and Countryfile.

Typically used in food supply chains within The CompletePackage, the PPS bale arm crate featured in Mary Berry’s latest series of Absolute Favourites and was spotted growing herbs in her garden. The crates are ideal for storing fresh produce with their ventilation feature and ease of hygienic washing.

As the nation settled down on Sunday evening, viewers of Countryfile were treated to a feature regarding the rubbish gathering on UK beaches. 8 million tonnes of rubbish is dumped into the oceans each year which is affecting the marine environment. It’s estimated that 20,000 tonnes of litter is discarded into the North Sea alone every year (comments from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.) The clip featured a PPS East reusable fish box storing fresh fish after its catch, whilst the fisherman used a Fish 4 Litter sack to collect unwanted debris. Typical rubbish being found consists of plastic bags, netting, rope and food packaging. Fishermen up and down the coast are trying to create a healthier marine environment, this is something PPS are passionate about with supplying reusable fish boxes across the industry. We supply a range of reusable, hygienic, washable fish boxes in various sizes which is also reducing waste management issues as the equipment can be used over and over again. The boxes will also help keep fish fresher for longer.

A whale of a time

On a sunny Tuesday morning with a clear motorway and the sites of Grimsby soon approaching, I knew I was heading for a fishy day. With the World Seafood Congress and our new warehouse open day imminent I was heading north to spend time with the team in preparation for events and develop my knowledge of our fish sector and the industry.

The first stop on the trip was the Humber Royal for a breakfast meeting with the organisers of the World Seafood Congress. Only in Grimsby would you get a Kippolata at 9am! As Silver Sponsors of the congress it’s essential that we have an understanding of the programme and attendees for the three day conference. It was great to see how passionate locals are about welcoming the world to Grimsby and promoting everything the town has to offer.

On arrival at the current PPS East site it was clear to see our new, bigger warehouse which is only over the road. As with our move in the Midlands last year, increase in demand from customers moving to Returnable Transit Packaging and becoming more aware of the environment has enabled us to grow our facilities with modern premises and technology. The hive of activity is apparent as soon as you enter the warehouse with a constant flow of equipment being received and dispatched from the dirty and clean doors. Did you know PPS East are also BRC approved?

The new warehouse is currently undergoing construction work to house the machine wash lines and office space. The scale of the new site will allow us to house separate units for dirty equipment, wash lines and clean kits. To coincide with WSC we are thrilled to announce the open event being held on Wednesday 9^th September between 15:00- 18:00.

A Sunny Thursday In The Peaks

When I was asked if I would like to join our bank, RBS/NatWest, on a Corporate Day I quickly said yes as the venue was Matlock Golf Club. Then I noticed I hadn't read the small print, I realised my day out of the office would be a Cycling Sportive which comprised doing 55 miles around the Peak District and a total elevation of 5,000 feet!

Since buying a road bike earlier in the year and having only ridden a maximum of 35 miles at a time, to say I was nervous in the morning was an understatement. My main motivation for taking part was knowing that if I could complete this challenge, it would be good preparation for my bike tour of Belgium in July. With a nice sunny day, a group of 15 of us set out for our ride around the Peak District. The route consisted of 4 major hills which were the toughest I have faced to date however the views were spectacular which made the climbs worth it. At some point during the day a fellow rider pointed out that the elevation gain was more than Everest.

What turned out to out to be a well organised event ended 7 hours later with only 8 riders making it to the finish line. Apart from the hills my biggest challenge turned out to be avoiding getting sun burnt! Jeremy Tutt, Finance Director.

Since moving to our site at Marchington a year ago, it's not just the interior of the warehouse that has had a revamp. The outside area has to gone under some significant changes.

Due to the increasing number of lorries passing through our gates, two security barriers have been put in place to increase security and assist operations.

All drivers must then report to the operations office before proceeding to a loading bay, making tracking equipment simple as well as accurate.

Once entering the PPS premises lorries are loaded and unloaded with returnable packaging from a total of seven loading bays. Three of which have been installed with high quality Thorworld dock level doors, platforms and ramps increasing efficiency and bringing down turnaround time.

A range of equipment passes through our doors, this includes plastic crates, collapsible pallet boxes and plastic pallets.

Drivers must also report to the operations office when leaving the premises to ensure they receive correct dispatch information.
