If you’re a patient of Asian descent, you may understand how Asian eyelids differ from non-Asian ones. The “single fold” crease seen on Asian upper eyelids often creates differences in crease position, skin fullness, fat volume, and more compared to the non-Asian “double fold” eyelid. As a result, Asian eyelid surgery can produce different expectations, especially during the recovery period.

Asian eyelid surgery requires an educated understanding not only of the procedure but also of specific recovery instructions. It’s crucial to know how long recovery symptoms will last, when you can return to normal activity, and how to support your improved results without sacrificing your Asian ethnic identity and facial features.

What Patients Need to Know About Asian Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Asian eyelid surgery is not a one-size-fits-all procedure. Recovery time can depend on surgical technique, individual anatomy, and how your body heals. Puffiness, tightness, or asymmetry around the eye can appear early, which is why patience and strict post-operative care are vital for Asian patients.

Patients with thicker skin, greater upper lid fullness, or a more complex surgical plan may experience a longer healing process than someone who needs a less involved correction. For example, a non-incisional double suture and twisting (DST) procedure is typically shorter than a more intensive anchor incision.

These differences matter when you’re planning time off for travel, social events, and returning to normal routines. In general, the more precise and involved your eyelid surgery is, the more healing time you should expect.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery Timelines for Asian Patients

It may be helpful to think of Asian eyelid surgery in phases.

Days 1–3

The first few days following eyelid surgery are when swelling, tightness, and visible healing are most noticeable. Patients who have undergone the DST non-incisional technique will generally have a shorter downtime, lasting around two to three days. Conversely, deeper incisions offer greater precision in your results but longer recovery periods.

During this time, you may be concerned about:

How swollen your eyelids look

Whether asymmetry during healing is normal

When makeup and strenuous activities can resume

How soon your results will start looking softer and more natural

Healing can look uneven in the beginning, but this does not indicate that you’re at risk of any post-op complications.

Days 4–7

At this point, many patients start feeling comfortable going out in public as swelling begins to improve. Although healing is still in progress, you may notice meaningful improvements.

Weeks 1–2

Patients who underwent incisional eyelid surgery techniques, such as anchor incisions or inner epis, may start to see improvement around this time. At this point, you may slowly resume normal activities under your surgeon’s guidance. Swelling may still be present, but scarring and bruising around the eyelids are likely less prevalent than they were immediately post-op.

Several Weeks and Beyond

Your improved eyelid crease continues to refine as swelling resolves. However, it’s important to note that not every symptom improves in a linear manner. Even after three weeks, some patients still notice mild puffiness. This does not necessarily mean healing is wrong or delayed.

While general timelines can help you manage your recovery, the process should be seen as gradual and dependent on your unique anatomy. Final results should not be judged too early, especially with how different the standards for Asian eyelid contouring can be.

How to Support a Better Recovery From Asian Eyelid Surgery

Your exact aftercare instructions should always come from your surgeon. However, the general routine is straightforward: Protect your eyelids, allow swelling to improve gradually, and give your body enough time to heal before judging the final results.

A strong recovery plan includes:

Scheduling enough downtime based on your surgical technique

Staying near the practice as advised shortly after surgery

Attending follow-up visits consistently

Avoiding making quick judgments

Following all post-operative instructions carefully

Smoking, poor healing habits, and certain health conditions can affect long-term healing.

Why Choosing an Expert in Asian Eyelid Surgery Matters for Recovery

Asian eyelid surgery is not just the standard Western procedure with a different name. Asian eyelid anatomy differs markedly from that of non-Asian patients, especially in the common absence of a natural upper-lid fold that’s found in many Asian eyelids. Treating Asian eyelids means consulting a surgeon who understands the unique learning curve of Asian ethnic anatomy and designs surgical plans around the needs of Asian patients.

Dr. Charles S. Lee is board certified in both plastic surgery and facial plastic surgery, with years of experience performing complex facial procedures for Asian patients across Beverly Hills and Los Angeles. His practice is dedicated to tailoring treatment plans around Asian anatomy and aims to promote facial harmony while preserving cultural identity. Dr. Lee’s extensive understanding of how non-Asian eyelids differ from Asian ones helps him produce natural-looking, more youthful results for Asian patients.

Knowledge of these ethnic nuances matters from consultation through recovery. Choosing Dr. Lee can help you plan a smoother recovery experience, as the procedure and process are thoughtfully matched to your Asian anatomy from the start.

FAQs About Asian Eyelid Surgery Recovery

How long does recovery take after Asian eyelid surgery?

It depends on the technique used. Non-incision eyelid surgery recovery takes roughly two to three days, while recovery from incisional surgery generally takes one to two weeks.

Is recovery easier with non-incisional Asian eyelid surgery?

For the right candidate, it can be. The non-incisional technique has short downtime, but it is best suited for younger patients with thin skin, little fat, minimal ptosis, and no need for skin removal.

When will my eyelids look normal again?

Healing improves in stages. Some patients look presentable within a week, while others still have puffiness at three weeks. Final softening and refinement take longer, especially after incisional surgery.

Why should Asian patients choose a surgeon who specializes in Asian eyelid surgery?

Asian eyelid anatomy differs, and these differences directly affect crease design, symmetry, ptosis correction, and the overall appearance of the result. Dr. Lee emphasizes preserving ethnicity and tailoring surgery to the Asian face rather than trying to create a Westernized look.

Will I need to stay in Beverly Hills after surgery?

Double eyelid surgery patients should plan to stay in the area for two to six days, depending on the method used.

What Are the Benefits of Using Rib Grafting in Asian Rhinoplasty?

Different Techniques for Different Noses

The goal of all cosmetic surgery is to help patients love their outward appearance. An additional, equally important goal is that results are custom to the needs of the patient; that cosmetic results not only improve the patient’s appearance to their specifications, but that the techniques and approach to the procedure are mindful of the physical attributes of the patient.

These tenets are especially important for facial refinement procedures, as the face projects more character and uniqueness than perhaps the body. Therefore, with procedures like rhinoplasty, customization is key. This procedure alters the most central aspect of the face—the nose—in an effort to both correct issues the patient sees and create better facial harmony by balancing the nose with the rest of the facial features.

These concepts become more complicated because different races and ethnicities have distinct physiological attributes and beauty standards, leading to varied interpretations of the procedure. Namely, while many patients with Eurocentric or Western features may opt for a smaller, more subtle nose, Asian patients have different goals.

Asian Beauty Standards and Rib Graft Rhinoplasty

Plastic surgeons who specialize in Asian cosmetic surgery approach rhinoplasty much differently than they would for Caucasian patients. For one, a common complaint of Asian patients is that their noses are too wide and flat, that the nasal bridge is too low. This is in direct opposition to common rhinoplasty requests from Caucasian patients or those of non-Asian descent, as these patients generally want to reduce the projection or size of the nose.

In Asian rhinoplasty, rather than focusing on reducing size and projection, surgeons aim to make the nose extend further from the face; thus, they use techniques such as rib grafts to achieve this.

What Is Cartilage Rhinoplasty?

In rhinoplasty cases where the patient requires the nose to be elongated or projected out further, plastic surgeons utilize autologous cartilage, or cartilage harvested from the patient’s body. This safe and effective method reduces the chance of the body rejecting the graft, as it uses the patient’s own cartilage, and provides a stable structure to build out the nose.

Common cartilage options include:

Ear Cartilage

This option is typically used for minor rhinoplasty corrections, like tip refinement, because ear cartilage is soft and malleable. It is particularly suited for this use because it is a small donor location.

Septal Cartilage

There is a small column of cartilage located between the nostrils, called the septum. Some of this cartilage is used during rhinoplasty, in part because it is easily harvested during the procedure. Septal cartilage can be ideal for minor to moderate alterations, but it might not be available in many patients, especially those with a deviated septum.

Rib Cartilage

Cartilage harvested from the patient’s ribs is the ideal option for nasal bridge projection and larger reinforcing techniques. While this option does require a secondary incision, it provides the most abundant supply of sturdy cartilage, which lends itself beautifully to the needs of Asian rhinoplasty.

What Is the Rib Grafting Retrieval Procedure Like?

Harvesting part of the rib cartilage is an extra step during the rhinoplasty procedure. While the patient is safely under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes a small incision over one of the ribs: most commonly the 5th to 8th ribs, which are halfway down the front of the ribcage, or the 11th or 12th ribs, which are called “floating ribs” and are accessed through the patient’s lower/mid back.

Through this small incision, the plastic surgeon carefully removes a piece of the ribs. The amount is not significant enough to alter the structure of the ribcage or affect its function of protecting vital organs. Next, they will shape the rib cartilage to the specifications needed for the rhinoplasty procedure.

Once the cartilage is adequately shaped, the rhinoplasty procedure can resume.

What Are the Benefits of Using Rib Grafting in Asian Rhinoplasty?

It is not uncommon for patients to be allergic to foreign body implant alternatives, such as silicone. Using rib grafts or other natural grafts greatly reduces the risk of implant rejection, making this a much safer option. Since rib grafts offer a thicker and straighter structure, they are ideal for nasal bridge projection that is so popular with Asian rhinoplasty patients.

What Are the Risks of Rib Grafting Rhinoplasty?

All cosmetic surgery carries some risk, including rib grafted rhinoplasty. While rare, potential complications include:

Infection

Bleeding

Poor healing

Scarring

Asymmetry

When performed by an experienced Asian rhinoplasty specialist, this procedure is considered very safe. Dr. Charles S.
Asian Rhinoplasty Techniques

Want to Learn More About Expert Asian Rhinoplasty Results in Beverly Hills, CA?

What Is Asian Rhinoplasty?

The best cosmetic surgery results are customized—no two noses are alike, so no two rhinoplasties should be, either. The same goes for differences in physical appearance. Dr. Charles S. Lee is a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in Asian rhinoplasty, a type of cosmetic surgery that focuses on highlighting the physical and ethnic uniqueness of Asian patients.

There are certain key differences in the physical makeup of different races’ nose shapes, as well as cultural and aesthetic desires. Dr. Lee’s choice to focus on Asian rhinoplasty stems from an understanding of Asian nose shapes and the types of aesthetic goals that many Asian patients share. Dr. Lee utilizes his vast experience and cultural sensitivity to provide unique rhinoplasty results that honor—rather than change—the ethnic features of Asian noses.

How Is Asian Rhinoplasty Different From Other Rhinoplasties?

Asian rhinoplasty is a specialized type of ethnic rhinoplasty designed for Asian patients. The key difference is that this approach addresses common concerns and physical attributes attached to Asian patients. Since “traditional” rhinoplasty was developed and is performed with white, European, or Caucasian patients in mind, it might not adequately address the unique concerns of other races, including Asian patients.

Asian rhinoplasty addresses concerns common among Asian patients, as many have a similar nose shape. Consequently, the approaches used in Asian rhinoplasty are designed specifically for these shapes. While all rhinoplasty is intended to improve the aesthetic and functionality of the nose, Asian rhinoplasty usually addresses the following concerns:

Bridge augmentation. While white patients generally want their noses to be smaller, Asian patients often desire a more prominent shape to their nose bridge. This is a key difference in intent and approach to ethnic rhinoplasty.

Tip projection and refinement. It’s also common for Asian patients to desire a more defined and sculpted nasal tip.

Defining Asian Nose Types

Asia is a large continent with an incredibly diverse population, so we have to leave room for differences in facial structure and patient preferences when talking about Asian rhinoplasty. However, there are some generalities and overlaps in common nose shapes that plastic surgeons see when treating Asian patients. To better understand the techniques used in these procedures, it’s helpful to recognize the various types of Asian nose shapes and understand what patients might be requesting.

East Asian Nose

The East Asian nose can be characterized by a flat nasal bridge and a wide base, and is commonly associated with people of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean descent. Some other variations within the East Asian nose shape include:

Straight or slightly curved nasal bridge

Moderate width and proportions

Diverse nasal tip shapes

Less pronounced nasal bridge height

Southeast Asian Nose

The Southeast Asian nose shape is evident in people of Vietnamese, Thai, and Filipino descent, characterized by a short nasal bridge and narrow nostrils. As with East Asian nose shapes, the Southeast Asian nose shape has some variation in nostril shape, width, and bridge height.

Asian Rhinoplasty Techniques

As with other types of rhinoplasties, the overall goals of Asian rhinoplasty are to:

Create facial balance by adjusting the shape and projection of the nose

Make the patient feel happy and confident

But to reach those goals, Dr. Charles S. Lee uses a multitude of techniques and approaches to create a customized, flattering nose shape for his Asian patients.

Because Asian patients usually have shorter nasal bridges and flatter nasal tips, some common requests for adjustment include:

Balanced width

A more pronounced or built-up nasal bridge

Improved nasal definition

Reinforced or reshaped nasal tip

Adjusted nostril width

A common complaint that Dr. Lee hears is that patients feel their noses are too broad or are lacking sufficient projection. This is in stark contrast with many other patients of “traditional” rhinoplasty who want to reduce the size or prominence of their nasal bridge. To achieve the goals of his Asian patients, Dr. Lee utilizes some of the following surgical techniques:

Strong Nasal Bridge

Dr. Lee uses autologous or all-natural tissue to build up the nasal bridge to be stronger and more defined. He may use a small amount of rib or ear cartilage for a patient who requires a more dramatic result.

More Prominent Nose

To achieve better facial balance, Dr. Lee can use multiple techniques to enlarge the nose, lengthening it to appear more proportionate to the rest of the facial features.

Improved Nasal Tip

If a patient wants a more prominent nasal tip, Dr. Lee uses the patient’s own rib cartilage for support to the tip.

Narrower Nostrils

If the nasal tip has been reinforced, it can simultaneously achieve a narrowing of the nostrils, as the tissue is naturally pulled forward. If more narrowing is desired, Dr. Lee will surgically alter the shape of the nostrils.

Correct a Deformity or Injury

Dr. Lee can also perform surgery to restore a balanced, natural-looking appearance to a nose after injury or congenital deformity.

The Average Cost of Asian Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can yield amazing results by altering facial balance to better suit the patient’s features, revealing a harmonious aesthetic. Asian rhinoplasty is a specialized version of this procedure that differs from traditional techniques. It aims to adjust the nose so that it flatters the Asian face, embraces cultural beauty standards, and accentuates the unique and attractive facial characteristics of each patient. Many patients, young and old, seek this transformational procedure from Dr. Charles S. Lee in Beverly Hills, but the number one question is usually: How much will my Asian rhinoplasty cost?

According to findings from CareCredit®, the average cost of a nose job in California is $9,498. However, Asian rhinoplasty is a specialized procedure that requires an extra level of finesse and experience. Therefore, it’s not uncommon to pay more for high-quality Asian rhinoplasty. Typically, Asian rhinoplasty with Dr. Lee starts at $26,000 and can vary based on individual needs, aesthetic goals, and the complexity of the procedure.

Beyond the Averages: What Do Rhinoplasty Costs Mean?

Asian rhinoplasty is typically considered to be elective, so the patient usually has to cover all costs out-of-pocket. However, some costs can be partially offset by PPO health insurance when breathing is impacted. In addition, many practices offer financing options that can provide easy payment plans to fit a variety of budgets. Dr. Lee’s office partners with CareCredit®, Cherry, and PatientFi.

You may have difficulty finding specific costs online, as each surgeon creates a customized surgical plan for each patient. However, there are some basic cost variables that can influence the end price, so we’ll explore those below.

Surgeon’s Fees

Your Asian rhinoplasty will be performed by a plastic surgeon, preferably one who specializes in facial aesthetics like Dr. Lee. The surgeon’s fee, sometimes referred to as the surgical fee, is the main cost of the surgery itself.

Most surgeons’ prices reflect national averages, as they have to stay competitive, but also because this fee usually reflects the relative complexity or difficulty of the procedure in question. For example, Asian rhinoplasty is actually considered one of the most technically complex facial procedures, as it requires great surgical skills to execute well. Naturally, surgeons who are exceptionally talented in facial surgeries or who specialize in Asian rhinoplasty will charge more than perhaps less experienced surgeons.

The old adage remains true with plastic surgery: You get what you pay for. This is best to keep in mind while shopping for your Asian rhinoplasty surgeon—don’t get drawn into cheaper prices. Your choice of surgeon can be the difference between a beautiful, long-lasting result and a botched rhinoplasty that requires a revision.

Facility & Anesthesia Fees

Generally, this portion of the final cost can vary greatly from surgeon to surgeon, depending on whether they have their own on-site surgical facility, their own in-house surgical staff, and other variables such as location. Under the care of Dr. Lee, your Asian rhinoplasty will be performed at Enhance Medical Center, an accredited surgical facility located in Beverly Hills.

In most cases, Asian rhinoplasty is performed using general anesthesia. The anesthesia fees cover the cost of the medication as well as the fees for the anesthesiologist’s services.

The Price of Beautiful Results

The best way to determine the cost of your Asian rhinoplasty is to meet with an experienced facial plastic surgeon, like Dr. Lee. Dr. Lee is a specialist in Asian cosmetic surgery, possessing a deep knowledge of the internal structures of the face and nose. A true artist, Dr. Lee maintains a keen eye for beauty and incorporates an understanding of facial balance and traditional symmetries to deliver results that are not just beautiful but reflect the unique nature of the patient’s features.

During your consultation, Dr. Lee will examine your nose and listen to your goals for the procedure. He will discuss possible surgical options and potential results, encouraging your participation in the process. If you decide this procedure is right for you, he will create a custom surgical plan and provide you with an accurate cost estimate.

Why You Should Combine Facial Surgeries

If you’re considering facial plastic surgery, or perhaps more than one facial procedure, it’s well worth considering combining them into a single surgery. Why? This is a very common practice among surgeons for multiple reasons. We’ll break it down below.

1. Cohesive Results

Maybe the most compelling reason for patients to combine procedures is that the results are more cohesive and can yield an overall more natural-looking result. The face ages at an even rate, so by treating only one area of the face, such as the mid-to-low area, with a facelift, other untreated areas, like the brows, may appear more noticeably aged.

A facelift lifts and tightens sagging tissues throughout the lower face, around the mouth, chin, and jawline, for a rejuvenated result. Only treating that area, however, may cause furrowed, aged brows to look more stark in comparison. In fact, most facial plastic surgeons will suggest combining facial procedures in many cases, especially if the patient is already considering treatment in multiple areas. By combining your facelift with a brow lift, for example, the entire face is treated for wrinkles, ptosis, and loose skin, resulting in a more complete and harmonious look that suggests a more natural-looking rejuvenation, which is harder to detect.

2. Surgical Practicalities

By combining your procedures into one surgery in which your surgeon performs, say, Asian rhinoplasty and Asian eyelid surgery at the same time, you are reducing certain surgical risks and saving on extra surgical costs as well.

Most facial procedures require the use of general anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort and safety during the surgery. Now, not every patient wants or likes general anesthesia, and if you fall into this category, it’s best to combine procedures so you only have to do it once. Although it is necessary for many procedures and considered perfectly safe, the fewer times you have to undergo general anesthesia, the less risk there is. Additionally, by combining your procedures, you only pay for anesthesia once, rather than multiple times if you were to undergo all the procedures you want in separate surgeries. This applies to all other fees associated with plastic surgery, such as facility fees for using the surgical center and even prescription medications. You’ll still pay for each surgical fee (the cost of the rhinoplasty and blepharoplasty), but the other fees will only incur once.

3. Quicker Recovery

Each facial plastic surgery procedure has specific recovery requirements, including physical limitations, aftercare (such as the use of ointments, medications, and surgical garments), and the amount of time needed off work. Facial plastic surgery recovery is crucial to ensuring the best possible result and should never be rushed, which is why combining your procedures together can make this process a little more appealing, as you’ll only have to contend with one recovery period.

Consider the procedure with the longest recovery period, such as rhinoplasty or a facelift, as this will be closest to the amount of time you’ll need to spend recovering. If you have your rhinoplasty first, you can expect about a month of restricted activity, followed by another six months before you start to see the final results. If you want blepharoplasty as well, you’d have to wait at least that amount of time before you can undergo another surgery, and then wait an additional month to contend with that recovery period. Combining your procedures means you recover from both simultaneously, drastically reducing the time you’ll be recovering. It’s almost like ripping off the band-aid in one go–you’ll be recovering regardless, might as well take care of them all at once!

How to Plan Your Combo Facial Procedures

If this sounds like a good idea to you, you’ll want to start planning your procedures. The first step, beyond deciding which surgeries you would like, is to schedule a consultation with an experienced facial plastic surgeon, especially one who specializes in Asian facial plastic surgery.

Dr. Charles S. Lee is world-renowned for his subtle, culturally respectful facial surgical results for his Asian patients. With a unique understanding of his patients’ aesthetic and physical needs, Dr. Lee is also a master of safely combining facial procedures. During your consultation with Dr. Lee, you can discuss your specific goals for each procedure and your overall goals for facial aesthetics. Part of the benefit of combining procedures is that Dr. Lee can work on multiple areas at once, resulting in a more harmonious outcome. Once he has determined the path you’d like to take, he will create a customized surgical plan that encompasses your goals with safety and success in mind.

Not every surgeon has the skill and experience to combine facial procedures, but with Dr. Lee, you can expect the highest standards of safety, patient care, and stunning results for your combination facial procedures.

Noses are such a defining part of our faces, aren’t they? Many people find that small changes to their nose shape can boost their self-image at social events, in photos, or just when looking in the mirror. If you’ve thought about making subtle changes to your nose, Asian rhinoplasty might be the right fit for you. In this blog, we will walk you through how Asian rhinoplasty works and how it can improve your nose profile.

4 Min Read:

What Is Asian Rhinoplasty?

Asian noses often have distinctive features like a flatter nasal bridge and a wider base. These characteristics create the flat nose look that shapes the overall facial appearance. Asian rhinoplasty is a specialized procedure that addresses these specific traits with careful attention to facial harmony and cultural beauty standards.

During the procedure, the plastic surgeon makes small incisions inside the nose or across the columella (the tissue between nostrils). They then reshape the underlying bone and cartilage structure. For many Asian patients, this involves adding cartilage to build up the bridge or define the tip. This extra cartilage usually comes from the patient’s own body, perhaps from the nasal septum, ear, or, in some cases, a small rib section.

Asian rhinoplasty can help if you’re looking for:

A stronger nasal bridge

A more prominent nose profile

Better nasal tip definition

Narrower nostrils

Correction of a past injury or deformity

Benefits of Asian Rhinoplasty

Getting an Asian rhinoplasty procedure offers several advantages that go beyond just changing how your nose looks. This procedure is specifically developed with Asian facial structures in mind, making it a thoughtful choice for many.

If you’re still not sure if Asian rhinoplasty is for you, here are five more benefits:

Personalized approach for Asian features: Unlike standard rhinoplasty, this technique works with your existing facial structure rather than applying Western beauty standards.

Natural-looking results: The changes blend smoothly with your other features, so people notice you look better but can’t quite pinpoint why.

Improved facial harmony: A well-proportioned nose creates better balance with your eyes, lips, and cheekbones, bringing your whole face into better alignment.

Boosted self-confidence: Many patients report feeling more comfortable in social situations and taking photos after their procedure.

Preserved ethnic identity: The best Asian Rhinoplasty surgeons maintain your cultural facial characteristics while making the specific improvements you want.

Asian Rhinoplasty vs. Traditional Rhinoplasty

Asian rhinoplasty differs from standard nose surgery in important ways. The main difference? The direction of change.

Traditional rhinoplasty usually makes noses smaller by removing tissue. This works for many Western patients with larger noses. Asian rhinoplasty typically does the opposite.

Since Asian noses often have a lower bridge and wider base, surgeons add structure instead. They build up areas needing more height using techniques like rib rhinoplasty, where cartilage pieces create natural-looking improvements.

The goal isn’t to create a Western nose but to highlight your features while honoring your heritage. A good surgeon adds just enough to improve appearance without erasing cultural identity.

Why Choose Dr. Charles S. Lee for Asian Rhinoplasty?

What Is Asian Rhinoplasty?

While traditional rhinoplasty often seeks to make the nose smaller, Asian rhinoplasty is specialized in that it aims to balance and accentuate a patient’s facial features by making the nose more prominent or less flat in appearance. Asian rhinoplasty isn’t meant to erase a person’s ethnic identity or unique features. It’s also not meant to mimic a Caucasian nose. This specialized procedure helps refine the nose to give patients more confidence in their appearance. People seek out Dr. Charles S. Lee for his extensive experience in:

Creating stronger nasal bridges

Making the nose more prominent

Narrowing the nostrils

Improving the nasal tip

Correcting injuries or deformities

Dr. Lee works with you to bring your vision to life. Some of the many customizable rhinoplasty options include:

Balancing the nose’s width

Building up the nasal bridge

Improving nasal definition

Reinforcing the nasal tip

Adjusting nostril width

With expert precision, Dr. Lee crafts natural results that create harmony with the rest of the face.

How Is Asian Rhinoplasty Performed?

Asian rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. Surgery usually takes three to four hours but varies based on complexity and goals.

For example, to build the bridge of the nose, Dr. Lee prefers to use your own tissues rather than a synthetic implant. Cartilage is harvested from the patient’s own rib and then implanted into the nose to elevate the bridge. Implants consisting of silicone and saline may also be used.

Surgery is usually an open technique. Open procedures involve an incision across the column of tissue that separates the nostrils, which minimizes the visibility of any scarring.

What to Expect During Asian Rhinoplasty Recovery

After surgery, you will wear a splint on your nose for about a week. It’s typical to experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising. However, this can be managed with plenty of rest and over-the-counter or prescription medication prescribed by Dr. Lee.

In most cases, patients can return to work and most activities after seven to ten days. It’s important to avoid activities like contact sports that could put your nose at risk of being struck for at least six weeks.

Swelling and bruising improve significantly in the first three weeks after surgery, and you will begin to see your newly contoured nose emerge as your body heals. However, it’s important to remember that it can take up to a year to see final results.

The following tips can greatly improve your Asian rhinoplasty recovery experience:

Follow all post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon.

Sleep with your head elevated for six weeks. Use a foam wedge or two to three pillows. You can also sleep in a recliner.

Avoid blowing your nose.

Avoid rigorous exercise or strenuous activity.

Avoid wearing sunglasses or eyeglasses for at least four weeks. They can put pressure on your nose, which should be avoided during recovery. If necessary, you can tape glasses to your forehead or use cheek rests.

Do not smoke or drink alcohol.

Eat healthy, high-fiber foods and skip fatty, greasy, and spicy foods that can contribute to inflammation.

Asian rhinoplasty is a customized procedure designed to address the unique aesthetic concerns of an Asian nose while respecting cultural and personal preferences. For those considering this life-changing surgery, knowing how long the results will last is part of the decision-making process. Rhinoplasty is considered a permanent solution, but various factors will affect the longevity of the results. This blog will explain what to expect after Asian rhinoplasty, the factors that will affect the long-term results, and tips to keep the results for years to come.

4 Min Read:

What Are the Goals of Asian Rhinoplasty?

Asian rhinoplasty can reshape the nose cosmetically while maintaining ethnic uniqueness. Common goals are:

To augment the nasal bridge for a more defined profile

To refine the nasal tip for better projection or shape

To narrow the nostrils for balance and symmetry

To correct trauma-related deformities

To improve function by correcting breathing problems

The techniques and materials used during the procedure, such as cartilage grafts or implants, will affect the longevity of your results.

Long-Term Results of Asian Rhinoplasty

Asian rhinoplasty is performed to create permanent aesthetic changes to the nose. Once the bones and cartilage are reshaped or augmented, they will usually stay that way for life. However, several factors can influence the longevity of your results:

Surgical Rhinoplasty Techniques

Advanced techniques, such as autologous grafts (your own cartilage), will provide longer and more natural results compared to synthetic implants.

Implant Material

Silicone implants are used for nasal bridge augmentation. While durable, they may need to be replaced or adjusted if complications occur.

Autologous cartilage (septal or ear cartilage) will integrate with the body and has a lower risk of shifting or infection, making it a more permanent option.

Skin and Tissue Quality

Thicker nasal skin will have prolonged swelling or changes in how the results settle. Thinner skin will show more defined contours but will highlight imperfections.

Post-operative Rhinoplasty Care

Follow your surgeon’s recovery guidelines to help ensure the best and longest-lasting results, including not putting pressure on your nose, protecting it from trauma, and attending all follow-up appointments.

Asian Rhinoplasty Complications

While rare, complications such as implant shifting, infection, or scar tissue formation can affect results. Regular check ups with your surgeon will help address these issues promptly.

Aging Process

As you age, natural skin elasticity and facial changes can subtly affect the nose. While these changes will not undo the surgery, they will change the way the nose looks over the years.

Lifestyle Factors

Sun exposure, smoking, and overall skin health will affect the longevity of your rhinoplasty results, especially if grafts or implants are used.

Early Results vs. Final Results

After Asian rhinoplasty, the nose will go through a gradual healing process that will affect the results over time:

Immediate Rhinoplasty Recovery Period

Swelling and bruising are most prominent during the first few weeks after rhinoplasty. You will see some changes in the shape of the nose, but your final results will take several more months.

Months Three to Six

By the third month after Asian rhinoplasty, most of the swelling will have subsided, and the nasal bridge and tip will be more defined. For bridge augmentation, the profile is usually visible within the first few months.

Final Rhinoplasty Results

Full healing can take up to 18 months, especially in complex cases involving cartilage grafts or implants. During this time, the tissues will settle, and the results will become stable.

Asian Rhinoplasty Revisions and Maintenance

While Asian rhinoplasty is designed to deliver permanent results, some patients may need revision surgery due to changes in preferences, complications, or aging-related changes.

3 Tips to Maintain Your Asian Rhinoplasty Results

You can help your results last longer by following these three tips:

Protect your nose from trauma and sun exposure: Activities that involve physical contact and risk of injury should be avoided during the healing period and approached cautiously afterward. Use sunscreen and wear hats large enough to protect your nose from UV rays, which can affect skin texture and pigmentation, especially over scars or graft sites.

Healthy lifestyle choices: Maintain your skin’s health through hydration, a balanced diet, and not smoking to help extend the results.

Regular check ups: Periodic visits to your surgeon will ensure your nose is in good condition and any minor issues are addressed early.

This blog explores the reasons behind its growing popularity by examining the influence of media, societal beauty standards, and the desire for facial harmony.

4 Min Read:

Natural-Looking Results

One of the most significant features of Asian plastic surgery is the emphasis on natural-looking results. Many patients desire subtle changes that highlight their features while maintaining their natural look. Procedures like double eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and cheek reduction are not done to mimic Western beauty standards but to achieve culturally desirable aesthetics that align with traditional ideals of proportion and balance.

For example, creating a double eyelid crease through blepharoplasty is a popular request among East Asian patients. The goal is often to look more alert or expressive rather than Westernize the facial features. Similarly, rhinoplasty in Asian patients may involve refining the nasal bridge or tip to improve facial symmetry without changing ethnic characteristics.

These natural-looking results have contributed to the popularity of Asian plastic surgery as patients want procedures that boost their confidence without looking “artificially enhanced.”

Cultural and Societal Factors

Cultural values play a significant role in the popularity of plastic surgery in Asia. In many Asian cultures, physical appearance is tied to personal and professional success. Youthful, symmetrical, and defined facial features are often associated with confidence, competence, and social mobility.

For example, in countries like South Korea and China, there is a strong emphasis on presenting oneself well, especially in professional settings. This focus on appearance has led to the growing popularity of plastic surgery as a means to improve one’s job prospects or get ahead in the workplace. Many see cosmetic procedures as an investment in their future, just like going back to school or developing a new skill.

Societal acceptance of plastic surgery has grown exponentially in the last few years. In many Asian countries, undergoing cosmetic procedures is no longer taboo and widely accepted as self-care and personal improvement. Reality shows and celebrities openly discussing their surgical journeys have also helped to normalize these procedures.

Technology and Techniques

Recent technological advancements and innovative techniques have also contributed to the popularity of Asian plastic surgery. Minimally invasive procedures like thread lifts, laser treatments, BOTOX® Cosmetic, and injectable fillers are popular among younger patients who want temporary changes or proactive anti-aging techniques. These treatments allow individuals to see noticeable results without the downtime of traditional surgery.

Asian plastic surgery specialists have also developed techniques specific to their patients’ anatomical features. These surgeons may use softer, more flexible implants or all-natural tissue for rhinoplasty to create natural contours that best suit Asian facial structures.

Aesthetic Goals for Asian Patients

Asian plastic surgery is popular because it addresses the unique aesthetic goals of Asian patients. These goals differ from Western standards, where there is a deep cultural appreciation for smooth skin, balanced proportions, and delicate facial features.

Popular procedures include:

Double Eyelid Surgery: For a defined eyelid crease without losing the natural shape of the eyes.

Rhinoplasty: To augment the nasal bridge or refine the nasal tip to achieve facial harmony.

V-Line Surgery: Reduces the width of the jawline to get a softer and more feminine facial shape.

Skin Treatments: Address hyperpigmentation or uneven skin tone to get a glowing complexion, which is highly valued in many Asian cultures.

These procedures are not designed for Western beauty standards but use personal aesthetic preferences that align with cultural and individual values.

Social Media and the Beauty Industry

Social media can’t be ignored when talking about Asian plastic surgery. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube have transformed beauty innovations from trendy to viral, with influencers and celebrities showing off their surgically achieved appearance.

Asian beauty standards of youthful, glowing skin and balanced facial features seen in K-pop groups and Korean dramas have also contributed to the popularity of Asian plastic surgery.

Positive Self-Image and Diversity

Beauty standards are becoming more inclusive as individuals embrace their individuality while still feeling free to make subtle improvements. Asian plastic surgery reflects this trend, offering customized solutions that honor cultural identities and individuality.

Beverly Hills Asian Plastic Surgery Specialist

Asian plastic surgery has gained popularity because of its natural-looking results, cultural relevance, and advanced techniques. By addressing the aesthetic goals of Asian patients and offering the most effective solutions, this specialty is booming both in the United States and internationally.

Dr. Charles S. Lee studied in the U.S. and Seoul, South Korea, and now teaches this approach. He has also brought his knowledge and experience in Asian plastic surgery to Beverly Hills, California. This blog will explain what results to expect at each healing stage, from early changes to the final outcome, and how different techniques will affect your recovery and results.

4 Min Read:

When Will I See Early Changes?

Following Asian rhinoplasty, you will start to see early changes within the first two weeks of recovery. During the first week, a splint or cast may be placed on the nose to protect and maintain its new contours while healing. Bruising and swelling are expected at this stage, especially around the eyes, but usually subsides within 7–14 days.

By the second to third week, you will notice the bridge of the nose is more defined, and its new shape starts to emerge because of a significant reduction in swelling. However, deeper swelling takes longer to decrease, and the shape of your nose will keep evolving over the next few months.

How Long After Asian Rhinoplasty Will My Nose Be Fully Healed?

While early results of an Asian rhinoplasty are visible within a few weeks, seeing your final outcome requires patience. The most significant changes will occur three to six months after your procedure. By this time, most of the swelling will have subsided, and the results will almost be final.

The time it takes to see your ultimate Asian rhinoplasty outcome, especially with tip changes or augmentation, is 12–18 months, during which swelling is minimal, deep tissues settle, scar tissue matures, and any subtle asymmetries will resolve. Tip refinement, which is common in Asian rhinoplasty, will require the longest healing time as it involves delicate cartilage work.

Healing Stages of Asian Rhinoplasty

The healing process in Asian rhinoplasty is a gradual, multi-stage process. Here’s a general timeline of the healing stages after surgery:

Week One: You will experience the most swelling and bruising during this period. If a cast or splint has been placed, it will be removed by the end of the week.

Weeks Two to Four: Expect a significant reduction in bruising. Some swelling will still be present, especially around the tip of the nose.

One to Three Months: Swelling will continue to subside, and you’ll be able to see more definition. Bridge and dorsal augmentation will be close to the final result, but refinement will continue.

Six Months: At the six-month point, your nose will have reached about 80% of its final shape. Any prolonged swelling around the tip of the nose and other delicate areas will have subsided, and the nose will look even more defined.

Six Months to a Year and Beyond: During this period, you’ll begin to see the final results of your Asian rhinoplasty surgery. Complete healing, especially after a procedure including detailed nasal tip reshaping, can take up to 18 months.

How Your Nose Will Evolve Based on Your Treatment Plan

In Asian rhinoplasty, different techniques will be used based on your goals and nasal structure, each with its own healing timeline.

Bridge Augmentation with Implants or Grafts

Many Asian rhinoplasty procedures involve bridge augmentation, with silicone implants, cartilage grafts, or tissue taken from the patient’s body (often from the septum, ear, or rib). This augmentation adds height and definition to the nasal bridge, providing visible definition in the first few weeks. Swelling from grafting typically subsides in three to six months.

Nasal Tip Refinement

Asian rhinoplasty often involves refining the tip of the nose, as many patients want a narrower or more projected tip. Tip refinement involves intricate work on cartilage and soft tissue, with swelling lasting for several months, so it takes longer to heal than other areas. Full tip refinement results are usually visible between 12 and 18 months.

Alar Base Reduction

Narrowing the nostrils is a common request in Asian rhinoplasty. Alar base reduction heals faster than other areas of the nose. Any visible scars from this technique will be minimal and fade in a few months but should become undetectable within a year.

Septal Grafts or Structural Reinforcements

If structural support is added to create a stronger nasal foundation, especially with cartilage grafting, these reinforcements will support the shape of the nose long-term but may require a slightly prolonged healing period if extensive grafting is done.

How to Ensure a Smooth Asian Rhinoplasty Recovery

To maximize the quality of your recovery, follow post-op instructions and incorporate these suggestions:

Sleep with your head elevated for the first few weeks

Avoid strenuous activities

Limit sun exposure

Eat a healthy diet rich in nutrients

Stay hydrated

Don’t smoke, and limit alcohol intake

Long-Term Results of Asian Rhinoplasty

Over time, your new nose will settle into its final shape with subtle but cumulative changes over several months to a year or more. If you’re patient, you’ll be able to enjoy the full benefits of a more defined and natural-looking nose that complements your unique facial features and individual aesthetics.
