Greg Holden is a very active, busy and successful New York City singer-songwriter. Surprisingly enough however, he began his musical journey in the UK and has only moved to NYC within the last couple of years.

I’ve only recently discovered Greg after becoming a big fan of Ian Axel (who also happens to be a successful NYC singer-songwriter featured on PFW a lot lately). I get the feeling that him and Ian are pretty close with each other, seeing that they not only help each other write, but also play a lot of shows together in and around New York.

Having only recently discovered Greg, I’ve found it a bit difficult to dig up any extensive biographical information on him (other than the fact that he relocated to NYC a couple of years ago from the UK to further pursue his musical journey). iTunes recently featured Greg as one of “Today’s Best Singer/Songwriters,” and featured his self-released debut A Word In Edgeways on their “What We’re Listening To” section. In addition, the track embedded below (“Choking On the Concrete”) was featured on ABC drama Private Practice. Not that I would know what that show is…

Once you take a listen to some of Greg’s songs, you’ll quickly realize where most of his success comes from. Sure, there are tons of DIY singer-songwriters (especially in NYC) but Greg Holden sticks out like a sore thumb (in a good way, of course).

The National debuted their single “Terrible Love” on Jimmy Fallon (via Stereogum). This track is from their impending LP High Violet. If you haven’t heard their previous record Boxer, you need to listen to it immediately because you’re seriously missing out. I’m very excited for this new record, but doubt it will compare to the greatness of Boxer.

SHAPES - Math Rock You Don't Need a Calculator For

Been pretty hooked on the international sounds of a band that does what people often call “math rock” very right. Leaving a lot of the genre’s signature confusion behind, UK trio Shapes make some intricate guitar licks, group shouting, and heavy-hitting songwriting way more palatable than say Dillinger Escape Plan ever would.

Shapes, formed in recent years out of the UK, blossoming out of a friendship between the band’s 3 members: Steven Bachelor, guitarist; Richard Buckley, bass; Gavin Filmer, drums. The band doesn’t expressly give anyone the title of “vocalist” because most of their tracks are instrumentally driven. The math rock-ness I mentioned is truly evident in almost all of their tracks, spurred on by Bachelor’s agile riffing and quickly followed tightly by the band behind him. If you like your music to groove, this isn’t your cup of tea. If you like your music to be really sick, however, then check out their latest “mini-album” The Pasture, The Oil. (How it differs from an EP, I don’t know, but that’s how they advertise it.)

This type of music is susceptible to a lack of diversity, repetitively spitting out one ridiculous song after the next, all of which go right over your head on first listen. Conversely, what I like about Shapes is that they’ve clearly put time into giving each of the 6 tracks on The Pasture it’s own identity. Most notably, I think, is the album’s closer “You Butcher,” rich with the aforementioned group yelling making for a really effective and I think very unique sound. Shapes is only 2 years old now, with a small number of EPs under it’s belt, but I have a feeling their next release will be mighty cool if its any improvement on the already mighty cool The Pasture, The Oil.
