The World Doesn’t Need More Photographs. It Needs Better Ones.

Let me start with a number "1.8 trillion"

That is how many photographs were taken in the year 2023 alone.

Can you even recall 10 photographs that you saw last week? Not the ones that you took. Just the ones you saw on Instagram or on WhatsApp, or maybe on someone’s story? I guess you cannot.

We are taking more photographs than ever before. And yet, most of them are completely forgotten within seconds. We are producing images at a scale and pace that has never existed in human history.

and the result is that no single image feels important anymore.

This is the problem I want to talk about today.

The world does not need more photographs. It already has more than it can handle. What it needs and what I believe most photographers want to make are better ones, not more.

The ones that have intent, purpose, recall, meaning and staying power. Not something that one scrolls past in 0.2 seconds.

Let us look at why this is happening, and what we can do about it.

Part 1: Why Billions of Photos Are Useless

The Question You Need to Ask Before You Press the Shutter

I have been a Minimalist Photographer for over a decade. In that time, I have walked the streets of Jaipur hundreds of times with my camera, looking for the right frame. And the single most important thing I have learned from my experience is this:

Before you press the shutter, ask yourself , why am I taking this photograph?

Most people cannot answer that question. Not because they are bad photographers. But because they have never been asked to think about it, not by others, not by they themselves.

Today, taking a photograph requires close to zero effort. The phone is always in the pocket and the camera is always ready with one swipe.

There is barely any cost to pressing the shutter, unlike the film camera era. And so people press it constantly, without thinking, without waiting, without any real reason beyond “this is happening and I should capture it.”

The result is a photograph that has close to zero reason to exist in most cases.

We Have Confused Volume with Vision

Somewhere along the way, we started believing that taking more photographs makes you a better photographer. It does not.

Taking more photographs makes you a faster photographer. It is more practice alright, but It does not turn you into a more thoughtful one.

The photographers whose work we still remember like Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, were not known for the number of photographs they took. They were known for the quality of the photographs they chose. Ansel Adams once said that twelve significant photographs in a year is a good crop. Twelve. In one year.

Most photographers today post twelve photographs in a single day.

There is nothing wrong with posting often. But let us be honest with ourselves. Posting twelve photographs a day is content creation. It is not the same as making twelve great photographs.

Algorithms Reward Speed, Not Depth

Social media has made this problem worse.

Before digital photography, there was a natural filter in place. You shot on film cameras. Film rolls cost money. Development cost more money. Therefore one were careful.

Film photographers waited before pressing the shutter.

Then came digital photography which removed the cost of mistakes. And then social media arrived and rewarding people who posted often and fast to please the algorithm.

The algorithm does not know if your photograph is beautiful. It only knows if people responded to it quickly liked within the first hour or so, maybe they were just your friends motivating you who had no idea about art and aesthetics.

Photographers adapted and started posting more over time. They started chasing trends. They started shooting what gets likes rather than what feels true. This is what ruined it.

And the result is what we see today are a flood of images that all look the same, that all use the same presets and the same angles and the same captions, and that none of us can remember five minutes after we scroll past them.

A photograph captured without intent has no reason to exist. It is a useless photograph. And the world is currently full of such photographs.

Sure there are still a lot of thoughtful and talented photographers out there but most are buried under algorithms.

Part 2: Why Minimal Art Survives

What Minimalism Actually Means

I want to clear up a common misunderstanding here. People often think that Minimalist Photography means “simple” or “empty” or “boring.”

It means none of these things.

Minimalism means that every element in the frame has a reason to be there. The subject is there because it needs to be. The empty space is there because it helps the subject. The light is there because it creates the right mood.

Nothing is accidental. Nothing is extra.

This is actually much harder to achieve than a complex, busy photograph. In a complex photograph, you can hide behind lots of detail. But in a Minimalist Photograph, there is nowhere to hide.

Everything is visible.

The Power of Negative Space

One of the most important concepts in Minimalist Photography is Negative Space.

Negative Space is the empty area around the subject in your frame. Most photographers treat this as wasted space. They feel the need to fill every corner of the frame with something.

Minimalist Photographers understand that Negative Space is not wasted space. It is doing its intended work.

Negative Space draws attention to the subject. It gives the viewer’s eye a place to rest. It creates a sense of scale. It adds silence to the image and silence is powerful.

Think of it like music. Music is not just the notes. It is also the pauses between the notes. A song with no pauses at all is just noise.

In the same way, a photograph with no empty space is just visual noise. A photograph with thoughtful empty space communicates something to viewer. He can wonder and spend time with the frame in a much better way.

This is why Minimalist Art survives where other art is likely to be forgotten. It gives the viewer room to breathe.

The Photographs That Last

Let me ask you to think of a photograph that you consider timeless. One that was taken years or decades ago and still feels powerful today.

Now look carefully at what that photograph has in common with other timeless photographs.

In most cases, you will find that the photograph commits to a single idea, subject and feeling.

It does not try to include everything or tries to say five things at once. It just picks one thing and says it completely.

This is the key to making art that lasts.

Art that tries to include everything ends up saying nothing!

Less is the secret. Art that commits to one idea stays in the memory long after everything else is forgotten.

"Minimalism is not a trend that will go out of fashion with the next Instagram update. It is a basic truth about how people see and remember things.

We remember what we were able to focus on. We forget what competed for our attention."

Part 3: Why Fewer Images = Stronger Impact

The Simple Economics of Attention

Here is a straightforward way to think about this.

If you post one photograph a month, the person who follows you will notice it. They will look at it properly. They may even come back to it later as they know you don't post that often.

If you post twelve photographs a day, each photograph receives a fraction of the attention it would have received otherwise.

Attention is not unlimited. It is a resource. And like any resource, when there is too much of something, each individual unit becomes less valuable.

This is why photographers who post less frequently often have more engaged audiences than photographers who post every day. Their work is anticipated and noticed. It is given the time it deserves.

Self-Curation is the Most Underrated Skill in Photography

Most photographers spend a lot of time thinking about how to take better photographs. Very few spend time thinking about which photographs to show.

But choosing which photographs to share and which to keep private is one of the most important skills a photographer can develop.

A portfolio is not made stronger by adding photographs. It is made stronger by removing the ones that do not belong.

Ten exceptional photographs will always be more powerful than fifty average ones. This is not a small difference. It is a very large difference.

Slowing Down Changes Everything

I want to share something from my own experience here.

I have had periods in my photography where I was shooting constantly, coming home with hundreds of photographs and posting them regularly, on social media.

But, when I look back at those periods, the photographs that came from them are technically fine and are reasonably good compositions but they are not the photographs that I am proud of, to be honest.

"The photographs that I am proud of came from the slower days"

Slower days, the days when I went out without a plan. The days when I just picked up my scooter and headed out in no particular direction, following no fixed route.

Nothing was planned. I took intuitive turns, followed my gut and the changing light and let myself wander.

When I found something that stopped me, maybe a shadow on a wall or the way light fell on a textured surface, I stayed there and looked at it for a while before even raising my camera to capture it.

I would go into deep thought and ask myself why it had caught my attention. I moved around it, examined it from different angles and questioned what it was really about.

Sometimes, I put the camera down and came back another day at a different time, because the light was not quite right or I felt something was still missing.

Those are the ones that have created impact and that people write to me about, asking if they can buy a print or get an NFT of.

Slowing down does not mean taking fewer photographs, it means taking fewer photographs with more thought and intention, because you respect the process of observation and the meaning you put behind each frame, rather than indulging in rushed creation.

Become the Photographer Who Slowly Chooses

The world already has enough photographs. It really does.

What it does not have enough of are photographers who are willing to slow down and choose.

Photographers who wait for the right light. Photographers who will walk away when it is not there. Photographers who will press the shutter not because the moment is happening, but because they actually have something to say about it or they found a story in it or a saw a part of their sub-conscious mind in the frame.

One good photograph taken with intention, composed with care and chosen over all the others is worth more than a thousand rushed photographs.

I truly mean it. Less is indeed and always more. Try shooting less with more intent and you will absolutely love it. Like how I have loved it over the last 14 years.

Bonus: You will also have to transfer less photos to your PC, edit fewer ones and will enjoy captioning them as well.

Remember: "The camera does not make the photograph. Your decision to press the shutter does. Make it count."

A Black and White Minimalist Photograph of Shadow of Leaves falling a Textured Indian Wall.

"When nature is busy making art, all you can do is be stunned and watch."

This is exactly what happened here, but luckily I had my camera along with me for this was shot in my house. This wall belongs to my neighbor. It was peak afternoon and I had just came out for a walk in the garden after having lunch.

I have the habit of constantly scanning my surroundings for subjects, can't help it, I am a Photographer after all. While I stepped down in the passage from my garden, I spotted this beautiful Shadow of Leaves. Trust me, they were such a treat to watch. I instantly rushed inside to grab my camera for shadows change very quickly.

I had to compose this right and also in a unique way. So I decided to shoot the subject top-down and I started by placing a diagonal line of the wall in the center and then let the Shadow of the Leaves fall in the frame as they wished.

I was close, but still I had to make sure I wasn't way too close. Also, this photo is a good example that using negative space in minimalist photography in such a tight frame is not easy.

The worn out textured wall helped in setting a unique mood as well.

Paint Patch Vs Partial Window

Black and White Minimalist Photograph of a Patch of Paint on a wall versus the Partially Open White Window at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur - India.

The starting point here was the Patch of Paint in the foreground. Next, I looked for a complimentary subject.

In doing so, I found this open flap of a White Window. Then, I re-did my frame to make sure only a part of both the Paint Patch and the Window was visible, so as to create some mystery in the frame.

When I captured this, Jawahar Kala Kendra was in the process of re-painting the walls and therefore you even see the paint brush stokes on the wall. I generally don't like fine cracks in the wall but it looks good in a photograph so no complaints.

This did not require much editing. I shot this colored but I converted this into black and white to remove any color distraction so that one could concentrate on the juxtaposition of the Paint Patch and the Partial Window.

A Minimalist Photograph of the Side of a residential apartment building in Jaipur City.

This Looking up Minimalist Photograph was taken at Swej Farm Jaipur. The place hosts a lot of residential and office apartments.

This shot was actually predetermined. Even before getting out of my house, I knew that I would be capturing a Windows in Repetition Minimalist Photograph.

All I had to do here was to find a good set of well designed simplistic windows that were mounted on a wall with a decent color. The gray color and white bordered windows were prefect for a Minimalist Frame and color palette.

The next thing was to not be too close to the subject rather shoot this from a distance. This would enable me to leave some negative space, show the objects as small and therefore maintain the Minimalism feel.

The other question that popped up in my head was whether to convert this photo into Black and White, but since the Gray and White combination acted as a good Minimalist color palette, I left the photo colored.

Three Windows Blue Sky

A Colorful look up Minimalist Photograph of Three Windows of a residential apartment in Jaipur City, against clear blue skies.

This is a very old Minimalist Shot that I captured on 30th November 2014. I used to have a Crop sensor Camera back then. It was Canon EOS 600D. The lens I used to carry was the Canon 55-250 mm telephoto lens.

This Look up photograph was captured when I was coming home from Tonk Road. I remember there was this huge building right opposite Imli Phatak railway crossing and I was on my Activa Scooter with the Camera hung around my neck. I stopped right outside the building and pointed my Camera upwards to capture a few shots.

Soon, I realized that I could make a nice Minimalist Color palette using the Olive Green wall and the Blue Sky as base colors.

Therefore, I captured the Image in such a way that the entire frame was split in two sections by the White Strip. One being the Olive Green section and the other one of the clear Blue Sky.

To bring in more symmetry and order in the frame I carefully placed only Three Windows on the Olive Colored Section. To make sure there wasn't any clutter I zoomed in further to crop out extra windows/pipes. I captured this photograph hence at 116 mm.

The Windows are open because the building was not fully constructed, only final touches were left. There were no birds flying around or I could have waited for one to fly in the frame. A Minimalist Photograph of the lines of different terrace walls at Jawahar Kala Kendra,Jaipur.

This Photograph I dug out recently from an old folder thanks to the lockdown. In fact, you will find me posting my Old Minimalist Work in the coming days. I have a lot of pictures left unedited over the years that I call a buffer stock. It finally got put to good use during the corona crisis.

My intent in this Photograph which is clear from the title i.e Layered Lines, that I wanted to just shoot lines i.e Minimalism as Simple Geometry.

I also used a patch of shadow and placed that on the left hand side of the frame to create this composition. Both the lines and the shadow on the left, add depth, dimension and creative juice to the Minimalist Photograph. The focus is somewhere on the top right corner on the pillar, if you can spot that.

The color palette also has been kept very simple and Minimalist. The colors primarily being only Orange/Red.

As I have mentioned earlier, you can create complex compositions in Minimalist Photography but at first glance these Photographs should look non-complex to the eyes of the viewer. The first reaction should never be "Oh this is messy." and at the same time the photograph must look clean and fairly easy to comprehend. (of course exceptions are always there.)

A Word on the Composition of the Photograph:

What I was looking to create here was a Minimalist Photograph with Four Colors, each one getting enough attention and yet, not climbing over each other or crowding the frame. To make the Red Color behave, as it could have easily over powered my frame, I placed it on the top right corner of the frame. Placing the Blue color was a bit of a challenge. I had to place the Blue colored section with care. It should have been neither too high nor too low. In the end how I placed it, is exactly how I wanted.

A word on the Composition of the Photograph:

Here, I wanted to make the closed Red Door as the primary subject in the Minimalist Photograph. I let the other elements fall in place. To decide as to how much of the Blue wall portion I needed in the frame, I had to constantly bend up and down. Finally, I kept it around say 40%.

A word on the Composition:

My intent here was to only show a pair of two colors i.e Blue and Red. The idea was to keep the color palette very Minimalist. I zoomed out, then zoomed in, then I moved closer towards the wall and then I adjusted my shot yet again. I did fiddle a lot actually. Sometimes, when you are shooting something as simple as the Minimalist Frame above, you tend to mess it up, for you assume it is too easy. Trust me this happens.

A word on the Composition:

Just like the Minimalist Photograph prior to this one, the idea here again was to have a very Minimalist Color Palette and restrict the total number of colors in the frame to two, namely Red & Yellow. I gave the Red color slightly more space in the frame. Red being my favorite color I did have a bias for it.

A word on the Composition:

After the Red color, Yellow is a second favorite color of mine, especially when it comes to using that color in Minimalist Photographs. Maybe because, this is the color I find most in my city (Jaipur) after the traditional ethnic pink(orange-ish pink actually). Again the color palette was kept Minimalist here and the Yellow color was give a larger share in the frame.

This is a document of a specific moment in history. Jaipur, India, 2020. Shot in the middle of one of the strictest lockdowns in the world. It is also a minimalist photograph. Two circles and a bicycle. That is all there is in the frame.

While it may be a good idea to support some charities that contribute to the COVID-19 Relief Funds, you can also choose to Support Artists, by directly buying Wall Art from them.

Artists need a Bailout too, No one ever bailed them out.

First of all, they leave most of the Mainstream jobs to produce Art.

Second, some of the Artists might even give up art during this COVID-19 Pandemic altogether. For now, they know that it is about Survival and if they are not able to generate enough income from Art, they would simply give it up forever.

It is our moral duty to support them, while the government tries to support other sectors and people.

Look what you consumed during the Lockdown the most. Movies, Music, Books, Poetry, Watched Tv Shows, Sports, went on Instagram and saw works of Fashion Designers, Photographers, Sculptors, Painters, etc Correct?

All of them are artists. Keep supporting them.

If it weren't for the Artists and their Art, we would have gotten bored to death and would have started having mental issues early on in the Lockdown.

5. Good time to introduce your family to Art, for everyone is home.

During the Lockdown everyone is home. This rarely happens. The whole family is together and it is a good time to buy some Wall Art and hang it on the wall where the family generally sits for a discussion. This way, you can introduce your family, especially the young children to Art and get their views and perspective on it.

What a Golden Opportunity isn't it? Will this time come again in our lifetimes? Well, nothing can be said for sure but most likely Not. So, it is time for you to take some action.

Many of us feel like our Freedom is curtailed or rather forcefully taken away. We miss our Freedom terribly. We miss the feeling of being Free, of being able to go anywhere, to do anything without taking anyone's permission.

Guess what Artists do? They express freely and they use their Artwork as a medium for their expression. They don't care for society or for existing Artists or for any Art form dominating them.

A Minimalist Photograph of Hollow Photo Frames on a Blue Tent at St Xaviers College during a Photography Competition cum Exhibition.

I went to St. Xavier's College Hathroi, Jaipur to attend a Photo Exhibition. They had recently organized a Photography Competition and the participants Photographs were on display.

The results of the Photo competition were yet to be announced, so I was a bit too early.

There was a big Hall on the 1st Floor where all the participants Photographs were put up. I went through each one and since I am myself an Ex-Xavierite, I met a few known people there, also a few Photographers whom I was friends with.

After a while, a young Photographer who was from the College management, took me outside to the garden area to show me this Blue Tent with these beautiful Hollow Photo Frames.

I asked him, what will they be putting up there. He said, they would be putting up the results of the Winners of Mobile Photography Contest and DSLR Photography competition winner's Photographs would be displayed on a separate wall inside the hall.

Since, the results were yet to be announced, the Photo Frames outside were Hollow. On the announcement of the winners of the Mobile Photography Contest, they would simply place the Photographs from behind in these lovely golden border Hollow Photo Frames.

Before leaving, I thought It would be a good idea to shoot this subject as Minimalist Photograph.

All I could see was Rectangles against a Blue backdrop aka Minimalism as Simple Geometry.

A Black and White Minimalist Photograph of a Man commuting to work on his Bicycle and a Big Shadow Triangle formed on the Street.

This shot was taken with from Civil Lines Metro Station 1st Floor. When I went there to take a shot, the Metro Station was under construction, therefore I had easy access to the staircase.

I was with my Canon 600 D crop sensor camera with 50 mm prime lens mounted, looking down on the street.

First, I placed the Shadow Triangle on the bottom left and then I waited for people/vehicles to pass by.

I knew long shadows of such people/vehicles would be created because of the position of the Sun and because of my distance from the street the subjects that pass by would look small enough to create a a nice Minimalist Frame.

I saw this Man on Bicycle heading into my frame from a distance and I waited to place him in the frame in such a way that would allow ample Negative Space.

Negative Space and the distance from which this Minimalist Photograph was taken, converted this Street Photo into Street Minimalism.

A Minimalist Photograph of Idle Plastic Chairs contrasting each other, one being Inside and the other being outside.

What I saw here initially, was the Red Chair on Top of a White Chair placed nicely against the wall. Then I spotted the Red Chair Inside.

This made me change my shot from the straight flat from the from idea of the two chairs, to include the Red chair inside within the frame.

This helped me create the Inside Vs Outside Chair theme in the Photograph. One more way of interpreting the art could be One Chair Versus Two.

A Minimalist Photograph of Peacock Feathers against an old Heritage Door.

This Minimalist Photograph was taken when I was out on a photowalk near Hawa Mahal Jaipur.

The photowalk was organized by Anudeep Mathur in November 2016. Thanks to the Quarantine/Lockdown, that I am able to dig into my old folders and bring these photos to the forefront.

We assembled in front of Hawa Mahal at about 8 AM. The Sun was shining bright and I still remember the air that day was really fresh.

After the Group Shot, we were supposed to walk towards Jaleb Chowk and keep clicking photos on our way. While everyone was on a street photography walk, I was on my combo of Street And/ OR Minimalism.

While on my way to Jaleb Chowk, I spotted this old heritage door and these beautiful peacock feathers Set. These feathers set was kept against the heritage door by a peacock feather seller. When I asked him he said that he would be off to sell these in about half an hour.

I admired the peacock feathers for a long time. They were so beautiful that I forgot to even click a picture.

After a while, I took the lens lid off and composed this minimalist frame bending low on my knees.

The feathers contrasted nicely with the brownish-red old heritage door with built-in square shapes.

Overall it was an interesting color palette not to miss.

As for the Types of Minimalism category, this photograph falls under the Less Elements type, as you can see here there are basically only two elements here 1. the door and 2. the peacock feathers

Park Bench Corner

A Minimalist Photograph of the Corner of a Park Bench at Central Park, Jaipur.

My intention here was to emphasize on the Curve of the Bench Armrest and the Spiral shape it was forming at the top.

To achieve this, I used the widest aperture possible on my Canon 100 mm prime Macro lens, aka f/2..8

Shooting with such an aperture resulted in effective segregation of the subject in the foreground with the background, for this setting created Background Blur or Bokeh. The Bokeh effect results in sharp attention and focus on the key subject. Note: there must be some depth behind the subject for the bokeh/background blue effect to come out nicely.

I also wanted to show the Shadow of the Park Bench Corner on the wall, and to achieve that I moved a little to the left of the Armrest.

A Minimalist Photograph of a Square Versus Abstract Light Squares on a Red Wall at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur.

What I spotted here first, was the Four Light Abstract Squares on the Red Wall. These were formed due to light passing through an open window with 4 glass panes in it, right behind me.

Now, I had to contrast these Abstract Light Squares with something. So, I looked for a Geometric subject to go with it.

There was a Square on the wall next to this one. To include that with the Abstract Light Squares I shot the edge of the two walls and placed one subject on the either end of the frame. This juxtaposed the two subjects nicely.

Steep Stairs Red Walls

A Minimalist Photograph of a Steep Staircase and Red Walls at Jawahar Kala Kendra Jaipur.

When you climb up the Stairs where there is Parijaat I and Parijaat II Art Galleries at Jawahar Kala Kendra, this is the Terrace Area that you see on the opposite end.

I have never been there nor do I know how to reach there. I guess this is a restricted access area or maybe the students having a class can access it. But what I saw and how I saw it made all the difference or else it would have been a very boring/vanilla Minimalist Photograph/Composition.

The only reason I shot this was, that I visually wanted to see, what if I placed the Steep Stairs on the extreme left and leave the maximum amount of Negative Space possible to the right hand side, along with these striking Red Walls.

It looked really interesting and I immediately knew I got another decent Minimalist Frame. Also, I was at a slightly higher place than the Terrace in front of me and that gave a different kind of look and feel to the Photograph. Where you stand matters a lot. Sure, I have captured a lot of Minimalist Photographs at Jawahar Kala Kendra but moving to different places inside JKK helps me get different shots everytime.

Star Drenched In Rain

Usually I duck in when it rains, but thankfully that day I decided to take some risk and I kept moving around with the Camera while it was raining.

I was inside Jawahar Kala Kendra and I took a lot of shots at the main entrance gate. Sure, I had to keep wiping my lens every now and then as the wind brought along droplets on my lens.

Guess what I started shooting at first? Well, Street Photography.

There were some people moving around with Umbrellas and some without. Unfortunately, I did not get what I wanted with the Street Photos. Therefore, I decided to turn back to Minimalist Photography.

I always wanted to click this White Star but the frame would have been too boring as it would have been a very flat shot captured by a lot of people before.

But, capturing the Star Drenched in Rain in Black and White, made this a little different.

I knew I had to keep my shutter speed high. So I captured this at 1/1600 sec. More Technical specifications of the shot are below.

Abandoned Table

I carried my Camera to Curious Life Coffee Roasters, C-scheme, one fine day.

COFFEE + MINIMALIST PHOTOGRAPHY?

HELL YES!!!

While I was waiting for my friend to reach the place, I headed to the backside of the building. There, I saw that some kind of construction was going on.

And I found this Abandoned Table lying there. What was interesting that the Abandoned Table had a Colorful Abstract Backdrop.

What else I could ask for?

I was on my Canon 100 mm Prime Macro Lens (as I planned to take some Macro Shots inside the Cafe or Coffee and other stuff)

I stepped back a little as 100 mm lens is already pre-zoomed in, and the subject appears too close.

Then, I composed the shot in the Portrait Mode/Vertically, leaving Negative Space on the Top.

Now that is a fairly simple Minimalist Photograph and the Composition is pretty easy to comprehend.

Open Window Squares and Shadows

Look-Up Minimalism is Lit.

And when you find a subject like this, it is like hitting the Jackpot. This Open Window was found near the Art Gallery 1 and 2 at Jawahar Kala Kendra.

I usually stroll there on Sundays hunting for Art Exhibitions and Hustling for Minimalist Compositions.

Jawahar Kala Kendra never disappoints. I am amazed myself as to how many different composition I have got from Jawahar Kala Kendra. Just Search my Blog using "Jawahar Kala Kendra" as keyword and you would know. I still can believe it and I am still not tired shooting there.

Anyways, What I liked here was that the Window has 4 Squares in it and the same Squares were also visible in the Shadow. I purposefully shot only a part of the Window to make the composition a bit interesting.

Lastly, The huge Light and Shadow combination is what made my Jaw Drop.

I had to hurry a bit to take the shot, as with past experience I know, shadows change lightning fast and your composition dreams may instantly go for a toss.

Table Lamp

A Black and White Minimalist Photograph of a Table Lamp shot at Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur.

This shot was taken during a Clay Festival at Jawahar Kala Kendra. You can look at the Table to see cracks and that is proof of clay.

The cracks seem intentional though and they were eye catching therefore.

The Table Lamp is not made of Clay though, and it is just like any other electric Table Lamp.

I was passing by this art Installation casually, like how I did with the previous ones. What made me to stop and give this attention, was the Cracks in the Clay aka the Cracked Clay Desk.

I thought, shooting the cracked clay would make a nice Minimalist Pattern Frame.

Soon, I realized that this was indeed very basic Minimalist Photography and I should improvise. So, I decided to include the Table Lamp along with the Clay desk in the frame.

Initial few shots were taken from the front and they did not do the trick.

It is strange, though I shoot most of my Photographs from the side, I tend to forget doing so most of the time. After about 3 shots I moved to the side of the subject to shoot.

Viewing this from the side, I knew I had my shot.

Since, the lighting was low, I had to take 2 more shots. Obviously, I messed up with the Manual settings in the 1st shot. I still do ;)

Actually, I shot this in Color. But, of all the shots that I had in my folder for this subject, this one looked the best fit for a Black and White Frame.

Thanks to post processing, I now have my Black and White Minimalism Table Lamp Shot ready.

Jasmine Flower Reflection

A Minimalist Photograph of Jasmine Flowers and their Reflection on a Glass Table.

When I go to Jawahar Kala Kendra, I usually sit at Indian Coffee House. The place that I mostly sit there is the one that is the unofficial Smoking Zone. Not that I smoke, but the thing is that, there you have nice Jasmine Plants and Nature around you.

Sometimes, these Flowers Fall from the Roof covered with the Jasmine Flower Plant, onto the Glass Coffee Table creating these reflections.

Most of the time while having coffee, I try to click a few pictures. This time though, I got one worthy of a blog-post.

The Reflection of the Jasmine Flowers on the Glass Table was my primary intent and I think I got it executed nicely.

As you can see, I spotted some amount of Negative Space between those two Flowers and I kept some more of it under their reflection, keeping the Minimalist Essence of the Photograph alive.

Twig Spiral

A Minimal Art Photograph of a Twig Spiral and its Shadow shot at Home Sweet Home.

This shot was taken in the backyard of my House. There is this nice plant climbing all over the Wall Fence, forming these Twigs with different shapes and forms.

I used the 100 mm Canon Macro Lens to capture this shot. The composition is relatively simple. I started by focusing on the Twig Spiral on the lowest possible aperture I could, to ensure decent bokeh in the background/background blur.

The other thing I made sure of, was to get the Shadow of the Twig Spiral right under it, also aligned nicely within the Minimalist frame.

I retouched this Photograph quite a lot in the Editor because, some darker areas were too dark and the lighter ones too light.

Though, editing the RAW version consumed a lot of my time but in the end, I am satisfied with the results.

Four Lights Vs The Cloud

This shot was taken right before the Entrance of Cafe Quaint, Jawahar Kala Kendra. I always wanted to shoot these Four Lights but I never found much aesthetic beauty in the frame, even with birds flying across against them.

But, today I found an Abstract Cloud floating in the Sky and I thought that would provide a good Juxtaposition to the Static well shaped Four Lights set.

The Cloud is the reason this frame exists.

OK, but I did a mistake, I shot this Colored. I should have shot this in Black and White.

But, That is OK, I made this Monochrome during Editing.

You see, Photo Frames with clouds in the Sky look amazing in Black and White. Next time, whenever I am to compose a Photograph with a Cloud in the frame, I will shoot in the Black and White/Monochrome mode.

I had taken plenty of Fork Shadows Minimalist Photographs with my Mobile Phone earlier. But, so far I had not captured one with a DSLR aka my Canon 6D Mark II Full- Frame Camera on which I have spent a fortune.

So, here is the classic Fork Shadow Minimalist Photograph. It took me a while to figure it out as I did not want the shot to be very common.

I spotted the Sunlight coming from one direction and had the Fork placed in such a way that an Elongated Shadow was created.

I tried many angles but I kept this one, as this was the most creative. You can see the Edges of the Marble Table on the Top, creating a Triangular shape, and that is what is key here in the composition. Also the Dark parts above those lines.

The Fork is placed on the right with lots of Negative Space to the left. This is how I followed all the Photography+Minimalist Photography rules.

Sure the contrast is a bit high, and some like it that way.

One reason to do so, was to bring the 3 Tones of Black and White aka, Light, Medium and Dark. In hindsight, I could have had more of the Lighters Tones.

How to Shoot Fork Shadow Photography

Fork shadow photography is one of the simplest yet most rewarding minimalist photography projects you can do at home. Here is exactly how I did it and how you can too:

1. Time of Day

The best time is when sunlight comes in at a low angle, early morning or late afternoon. This creates long elongated shadows which are far more dramatic than short midday shadows. Again, it also depends on the angle of light.

2. Position the Fork

Place the fork at an angle to the light source. I tried many positions before settling on this one. The key is to make sure the shadow falls on a clean uncluttered surface. So you can capture clean and clear shadows.

3. Choose Your Surface

A marble table, white paper, or plain floor, a wooden table works best. The cleaner the surface the more the shadow stands out. I used a marble table here which also added a faint texture to my shot. Select your base carefully. It is a very important aspect of Fork Shadow Photography

4. Camera Settings

Shoot in manual mode
Use a low ISO (I used ISO 100) for a clean image
A small aperture like f/7 keeps everything sharp
Fast shutter speed 1/160 sec or higher since you are shooting in bright sunlight

5. Composition

Do not centre the fork. I placed it to the right with lots of negative space to the left. This follows the rule of thirds and gives the shadow room to breathe. Make sure the Fork Shadow has room to breathe. Look for any natural shapes the edges of your surface create. Here the marble edge created a triangle which added to the composition.

6. Black and White

Convert to black and white to remove any colour distractions. This forces the viewer to focus purely on shape, tone, and shadow. Aim for three tones: light, medium, and dark. This uplifts the black and white fork shadow compoistion a lot. Do edit it properly.

Fork Shadow Photography Ideas to Try at Home

Try different kitchen utensils, a spoon creates a rounder shadow, a knife creates a sharp thin line.
Stack two ore more forks for a more complex overlapping shadow.
Try coloured surfaces for a different mood, if you want but black and white is the best.
Shoot from directly above (flat lay style) for a different perspective.
Try at night with a single lamp instead of sunlight.

I went to Ganpati Plaza Shopping Complex in October 2018, a few days before Diwali Festival that was in November. The Shopping Complex was decorated with Colorful Drapes and fancy lights. It is a tradition here in India. Most of the Bazaars are decorated right before Diwali and they host huge discounts to promote their Sales.

While I was on the Ground Floor, I looked up at the Drapes and mentally composed a Few shots with only the Colorful Drapes and Blue Sky.

Then I wondered, if I could get a bird flying across the frame. But, since it was still not evening, the chances of birds flying past my pre-composed frame were fairly slim.

Therefore, instead of waiting for a bird to fly across my frame, I chose these Static Curved Street Lamps instead.

Since the Key Subject here are the Two Street Lamps, I started my composition with them by placing them at the bottom right corner of the frame.

Then, I adjusted my movement to fit in the Colorful Drapes. There were other Colored Drapes as well, but I chose these Olive and Reddish ones, for they made for a better Color Palette.

Lines Versus The Floor Mat

Poppin Cafe has now shut down, but I used to visit if often and I made friends with the owners Akul and Ritika.

Since I was friends with them, at times I used to carry my Camera to the Cafe and roam around freely searching for shots.

This is the reason I was able to get such a shot. I was free in the mind.

This twisted perspective is what I would love to shoot even more. Believe it or not, I started by placing the Wooden Table on the top left as a bar of straight line, then I adjusted my movement for the rest of the elements to align and form some kind of balance.

As you can see, there is a lot of Simple Geometric Elements in the frame and Negative Space, hinting at a classic Minimalist Photograph. The Floor Mat forms a Triangle and there is another one under the table and then there are Straight and Diagonal Lines.
