Today was a big day for Google, Bing, Twitter and Facebook.

This information is on my Blog, but it is pretty big news and I definitely thought it was worthy of an email to you.

To quickly recap the big news:

Bing announced they have made a deal with Twitter AND Facebook to pull their updates into the SERPS (search engine results pages).

Hours later Google announced they too have a deal with Twitter and will be delivering Tweet feeds in the SERPs.

This is exciting and interesting and it confirms one thing:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and Social Media are partners in your success. You shouldn't neglect either.

But I digress - this isn't a sale pitch, I wanted to share the news and some tips with you.

So, no one knows exactly how this is going to play out yet but we've all started preparing for it already.

Off the top of my head, here are some tips to help you prepare.

Since we don't know how they will sort through the massive volume and pick the tweets to return in the results, we don't know exactly how to give our tweets the best shot at getting picked up.

Let's look at a little logic and a little Google knowledge.

They like history and they like quality. They also like volume.

So, get an account now if you don't have one already. Get as much history in as you can. Accounts that have been around longer with more tweet history may fare better. (PLEASE don't go overboard - the last thing we need is people to start keyword stuffing mass volumes of tweets).

Tweet often but keep it natural - and tweet quality. Tweet when you have something to ask, share or teach.

Use keywords - but don't stuff with keywords. If the tweets are about your industry, you should be using keywords naturally anyway.

If you are going to retweet your messages at different times of the day to be more likely to catch your audience, make sure you vary them a little bit (and again, don't go overboard).

Use links in your tweets back to your site (to relevant content on your site) and share the link love - link to other quality sites out there.

Make sure you use your keyword in your bio and if you are just setting up your username, maybe in your username too? This may or not help. Again, I must say - do not stuff keywords anywhere - not in tweets, not in your bio, not in your username.

This is a good thing, but if people abuse it and bring the overall quality of Twitter down, we will all be sorry.

If you have a feed that sends your tweets to Facebook, or your Facebook status to Twitter, you may want to consider turning it off. If you have the same message in both places you are missing an opportunity for Bing to pick up both. If they are unique, you have 2 chances to get in there!

It's been a long day, so I'm going to leave you with this for now. Just wanted to get some quick thoughts and tips out to you.

Web Development Framework

I recently had the opportunity to develop a small online booking system. This time round I was determined to make use of some development framework. Not for me the slow slog of writing all my code from scratch - surely we have moved beyond that now in web development?

The big question was - which framework to use? Since the advent of Ruby on Rails, development frameworks have become quite the flavour d'jour and there are now, well, maybe not thousands of them, but quite a few! The last time I heard there are about 80 development frameworks out there. I am not 100% user of this number, it could be a bit higher, it could be a bit more conservative (on this site you can find about 40 PHP frameworks listed - http://www.phpwact.org/php/mvc_frameworks). The point is, the web developer is now really spoilt for choice. Which is a problem in itself, since having too much choice can leave you dithering between different options.

This article is therefore about how I made my choice, which was CakePHP, and which factors I took into consideration.

Obviously and certainly I will get bombarded with "Why don't you try X framework, it is really much simpler to use..." type responses. That is quite OK, to each his own! But this is the choice I made and I am sticking to it. Frankly, the idea of going through another learning curve gives me the heeby-jeeby's....

I found that the selection criteria were not independent. In other words, once I've ruled out some frameworks due to some specific criteria, other factors came into play. It was therefore more a process of elimination than judging all the frameworks off a predefined set of criteria.

The first major selection point was: Ruby on Rails or not.

Obviously there is the attraction of using a brand new, hip, buzz-word hyped framework. You can't go wrong with something that is getting so much attention... or can you?

Let's look at some of the selection criteria that filtered out Ruby on Rails"

1. Ease of installation and ability to run on shared hosting

The problem is that most of my clients make use of a shared hosting environment. Can Ruby on Rails run on common-or garden variety type shared hosting? The answer was, I soon discovered - no. One needs to either have access your own private servers or run on a shared hosting environment that has Ruby on Rails pre-installed. Admittedly, there are a couple of them now starting up. 2. Minimize the learning curve

Even though I knew that any new framework will involve a steep learning curve, I really didn't have the guts to go through TWO learning curves - one for the language itself and one for the framework. I might still have been prepared to go through the learning curve though if it wasn't for the fact that RoR requires special hosting.

So basically the decision was: Not RoR. And based on criterion 2, I decided to stick to a PHP framework, and not go for something else based on Perl or something else since I've been developing in PHP for the past two, almost three years. Having said this, it is all very well to say that CakePHP allows you to use your PHP skills - because it is an object orientedframework/MVC based framework it has its own rich language infrastructure. You still need to learn the CakePHP terminology and the learning curve is pretty steep!

3. Ability to run on PHP 4

Although PHP 5 offers more object oriented features, once again, not all shared hosts offer PHP 5 out of the box. I decided that I wanted to stick to a framework that will offer backwards compatibility and enable me to run on most of the servers that I, as well as my clients, host on.

My further criteria came down to:

4. Must have good documentation

Under good documentation I count the following:

- User manual

- Examples and code snippets

- Screen casts and videos - although I do not see these as essential

5. Good support by the user community

This, in combination with formal documentation is absolutely essential. All of these frameworks are pretty young and the documentation is also constantly evolving. Some documentation might be patchy in details. This is where the user support in terms of the community comes in. How active are the forums? Is there a bug tracker? Any other informal tutorials, write-ups, comments, blogs and other support?

6. Regular upgrades and bug fixes

..but not so close to each other that the software becomes unstable and unusable. Backward compatibility is also important.
Version number of the software can be used to indicate maturity.

Working off the following list (http://www.phpit.net/article/ten-different-php-frameworks/) one can see that the list has narrowed down to the following frameworks:

- CakePHP

- Seagull Framework

- WACT - 'disqualified' since the latest version now requires PHP 5

- Zoop

- CodeIgniter

The next step was a bit less scientific - but still fitted in with point 5 - how well is this Framework regarded? How much support does it generate in the 'community'.

I scouted through forums and followed links and surfed the net and tried to get a general feel - and overall, CakePHP did seem to come out tops. A similar check that one can do is the following - do a Google search for each of the frameworks and see how many results are returned. This will give you a good idea of the general support, number of tutorials, number of forum posts and general 'talked about' factor for the specific framework. In summary therefore, the support for Ruby on Rails and the amount of information available for it is astounding and you will probably not go wrong if you decide to go this route. But if you want to stick with a PHP framework - CakePHP seems to be the route to go!

Web designing involves creativity. Most people would think that it is all about the how the designing is done. However, being a web designer, a good one at that, should not just take into consideration how the whole finished product would look like. Although that would be the first thing that people would notice, there are other essentials that web designers should think of and should prioritize when designing a website.

In order to be sure that your web designing is going through the right path, make sure it is TUFF.

Time efficient

Do not cramp your website with too much graphics and details that it would cause loading problems. The last thing that you would want to have is a very beautiful website with no visitors. Admit it. People are lazy. They do not want to wait for your site to finish loading when they can view other sites in a matter of seconds. No amount of graphics would make them want to stay. So, to avoid this problem, keep the graphics and content at a minimum to avoid slow loading.

Utilize CSS

Table based websites are gone. CSS is the way to go. It offers answers to problems on being accessible, being reusable and being able to have a relatively not so big file size. Through CSS, users are given a wider range of control on how the website should look like. For beginners, especially those non-programmers, you can start with learning how to make hyperlinks, bullets and numbers and modifying texts.

Fits All

People should be able to access your website. You need to think if the graphics you are using would fit all screen resolution. Well, maybe not all, but majority of the users of the Internet world. Your designing would all be futile if computers' screenresolution will not be able to give justice to what you have done. Also, put into mind that technology is fast evolving. Thus, your design should still work well with any advances that would come or may be easy to adjust once new technology sets in. And, most importantly, do not limit your website to just one or two browsers.

Friendly to users

This means it should be easy to navigate and the layout should be easy to understand. Second to waiting, people do not like not knowing what to do and where to go. Unless people really need your site badly, they would not shed any effort figuring out how your website works if it's too difficult to see at first glance

To make your blog worth reading and revisiting you need to think about the type of content that is suitable for your blog in order to make it readable and, possibly, profitable. First off, I want you to understand that many blogs have no fixed scope, which means many bloggers write about whatever they are interested in. Other bloggers will target specific topics and stick to those. In a minute you will see why topics may be the reason a visitor first comes to your blog but it is not the main reason they will come back, again and again.

The difference between a blog worth revisiting and one that is forgotten about is the way the blog is written. Just imagine, would you prefer to read your university professor’s lecture notes or the latest novel by your favorite author?

I will say you prefer to read the novel because it appeals more to your interest and because it is not as mind-numbing as the lecture notes by your professor. The most important point to remember is people like to read “light” stuff most of the time. You see, when people log on to your blog, they are not only looking for information – they are also looking for information they can obtain easily. They want it in a relaxed manner and entertaining if possible.

You might be thinking - "I can't write that way. Never could get the hang of it". I assure you, you can write that way.

Here are some key points that will transform your writing style.

Before you write one word of your post, write a compelling headline to grab their attention. For example, the title of the article you are reading right now - "Blog Content Is About You!". This title must have attracted you to my blog. Why? Because it is about "You"! I also posted it in Article Directories which will attract even more readers, like you. This can be done by simply imagining you’re talking about a certain topic with your personal friend. An extra bonus for your readers would be a great sense of humor, so try to add funny comments in your articles where they are suitable. Do avoid using vulgar language unless you don't care about turning off a major audience of blog readers who will be offended. There are many blogs I will never visit again just for this reason.

Another important key point is to avoid addressing your reader as a plural unit, that is, as - "we", "us", etc. Sometimes this is appropriate but most times it is to be avoided. You should not write as if you’re preparing a lecture. Instead, you should write as if you are having a conversation with one person because this will make your visitor think of you more as a personal friend rather than a professional writer or professor. I used this one-to-one technique as a Radio and Television News broadcaster. I imagined I was giving the news to just one friendly person who was interested in what I had to say and who trusted me. I wrote it and voiced it as if I were telling the stories only to them. In other words, I write like I talk.

The most important change in your writing style is to establish your own personality through your words. Because you are reading this article I assume you are a very curious person, just like I am. Based on the headline, you wanted to know what this article was all about. As you read, you likely are thinking - "Who is this writer?". It follows that your visitors come to your blog to find out as much about you as the information you’re offering them. I hope I am giving you some insight into who I am as a person and how I think because, in reality, I am using all the pointers in this article to demonstrate that they work.

You make your blog distinctive - not the subject of your blog! Having your distinctive personality show through in your blog will make all the difference between your blog about gadgets and all the other blogs about gadgets out there. Get the idea? Let me repeat for emphasis: You make your blog distinctive - not the subject of your blog! This is a lot like creating your own brand name, where people immediately remember your blog’s name when they need to find out information about gadgets, or whatever you regularly write about, in the same way people immediately think of McDonald’s for burgers or Nike for sportswear.

Still think you can't do it? I challenge you to write just one blog post using the pointers I have given you and see what happens. Call it - "My Personal Opinion about (whatever)!". And, let your personality out of prison, just once!

Google and Sites That Don't Belong

Warning: this tutorial is a little long, but it has great information on the questions people ask me about the most!

SEO is complex. SEO is maddening. SEO is confusing. But more than anything SEO is EFFECTIVE.

It is unanimously agreed that SEO is the top source of driving targeted traffic to sites. Everyone wants top SEO rankings. The problem is, you look at the SERPs (search engine results pages) and you find sites there that you don't expect to. You see sites that are filled with spam, you see sites with no content, you see sites with no inbound links.

And worst of all is what you don't see - YOUR site.

It makes no sense - you've done everything you can, followed all the rules and still your site is no where. How are these other sites that don't belong there holding on to your coveted spot?

The truth is, as smart as the engines are, they don't catch all the garbage sites out there as quickly as we would like them to. There are 2 things we can do to help eradicate this problem.

1. Report any and all spam and garbage sites to Google (and the other engines you use). This is not being a tattle tale, this is not going out for revenge. This is simply asking Google to uphold the rules that they are asking you to follow. It is saying, "I'm playing fair here, so level the playing field so my competitors that are "less-than ethical" don't rule the SERPs". To notify

MAGIC #1
An Indian found that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the Computer
which can be named as "CON". This is something funny and inexplicable. At
Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this happened!
TRY IT NOW, IT WILL NOT CREATE A "CON" FOLDER

MAGIC #2
For those of you using Windows, do the following:
1...) Open an empty notepad file
2.) Type "Bush hid the facts" (without the quotes)
3.) Save it as whatever you want.
4.) Close it, and re-open it.
Noticed the weird bug? No one can explain!

MAGIC #3
Again this is something funny and can't be explained. At Microsoft the
whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened!
It was discovered by a Brazilian. Try it out yourself.
Open Microsoft Word and type

And then press ENTER
