The core of our ministry is to fulfill the mission statement of Barnabas International:

“The mission of Barnabas International is to edify, encourage, and strengthen servants in ministry. We creatively seek ways to fulfill our charter through personal, small group, and conference ministries. Our ministry priorities are targeted toward missionaries, pastors, national church leaders, and their families."

I grew up in a home in which my mother went to church every Sunday, but my father attended only Christmas and Easter services. I went to Sunday School through high school but never heard the Gospel. It was the summer before my senior year in high school that I began my search for more substance in Christianity than what I had been exposed to.

I grew up in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, where I lived until enrolling at Miami, University in Oxford, Ohio. My father was a traveling salesman for the safety shoe company founded by his grandfather. He was away from home five days a week and in the summers the entire family traveled with him. By the age of eleven I had been in 48 states and traveled in over seventeen countries. Upon graduation from high school in 1977, my parents gave me a trip to any place of my choice. Remembering the Soviet flags I had seen flying in Prague in 1970, I chose to go to the Soviet Union. Although I was not yet a believer, that summer trip to Leningrad would have a tremendous impact on my future desire to serve Christ in the Soviet Union.

Having been to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union before I became a Christian, I immediately decided to be involved in that area of the world once I did make a commitment to Christ. In fact I was determined to start the first mission to the Soviet Union when I realized, the first time I was in a Christian bookstore, that such a mission, Slavic Gospel Association, had been in existence for over forty years. I visited SGA for the first time in the summer of 1978, and came to study at their Institute of Slavic Studies in January 1982. That spring I heard about the ministry of Biblical Education by Extension (BEE) for the first time.
Cheryl and I were accepted to missionary service in March 1985 and were with BEE until April 1992 when we joined the staff of Barnabas International.

Charley to Attend Evangelical Theological Society in Atlanta

From November 16-19 Charley will attend the annual meetings of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) in Atlanta, Georgia. He will be attending several sessions on global Christianity and theology, and he also plans to meet with professors and other missionaries during the conference. Please pray for his meeting with a member of the ETS Executive Committee on connecting ETS with a similar society of evangelical theologians in Eurasia (the countries of the former Soviet Union). The Evangelical Theological Society hopes to forge a partnership with the Eurasian Theological Society, with Charley acting as liaison between the two organizations.
