But in the Kingdom of God, the way down is the way up.

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

And yet it is in choosing obedience over comfort that we offer God the deepest form of worship.

When we surrender our preferences, our plans, and even our fears to follow His will, we become living sacrifices set apart, holy, and pleasing to Him (Romans 12:1).

Pray for strength: Obedience requires grace. Don’t try to obey in your own strength rely on the Holy Spirit.

6. When You Don’t Feel Like It

Let’s be honest: sometimes we don’t feel like obeying.

We’re tired. We’re afraid. We don’t see the point.

There’s a misconception in today’s culture that following Jesus is a feel-good, comfortable lifestyle. A motivational pick-me-up. A gentle guide to success and happiness. But Jesus never marketed the Gospel like that. In fact, His invitation to discipleship came with a cost and He never softened it.

He said, “Follow Me” but also, “Take up your cross.”
He promised abundant life but also suffering, trials, and sacrifice.
He offers grace but calls us to lay down our lives.

This is the paradox of the Gospel: the path to life runs straight through death death to self, to comfort, to control.

And yet, it’s in this surrender that we find true life. Eternal life. Abundant life. Purposeful life.

1. What Is the Cost of Discipleship?

To be a disciple is not simply to believe in Jesus it’s to follow Him. To be shaped, stretched, and sanctified by Him.

Jesus was clear:

"Do what makes you happy."

Jesus says the opposite:
“Deny yourself.”

“Follow Me.”

Surrender isn’t natural. It goes against every fleshly instinct we have. Our hearts crave independence. We want to be in control. We want Jesus to bless our plans, not change them. But discipleship requires the opposite posture: submission.

Even Jesus Himself had to surrender. In the garden of Gethsemane, He cried out:

“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

He chose the cross. For us.

3. The Rich Young Ruler: A Case Study in Cost

The young man walks away, grieved, because he wasn’t willing to pay the cost.

Jesus wasn’t being cruel. He was revealing the man’s idol.
His heart clung to wealth more than God.
And Jesus, in His love, wouldn’t allow him to follow halfway.

The same is true for us. He will put His finger on whatever competes for our affection because He loves us too much to let us live in divided loyalty.

4. What You Gain When You Let Go

Let’s be honest: surrendering control, comfort, or personal ambition is painful. But what comes from it?

Peace that passes understanding (Philippians 4:7)
Joy that isn’t based on circumstances (John 15:11)
Intimacy with God that can’t be manufactured
A life that bears eternal fruit (John 15:5)
The crown of eternal life (James 1:12)

Jesus doesn’t call you to lay down your life so He can ruin it He calls you to lay it down so He can redeem it. When you give up your small plans, He replaces them with a Kingdom vision that spans eternity.

As Jim Elliot famously said:

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

Romans 12:1 says:

“Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God this is your true and proper worship.”

A living sacrifice keeps crawling off the altar. That’s why surrender isn’t a one-time moment; it’s a daily decision. Every morning, we must ask:

Will I choose comfort or calling?
Will I choose my way or His?
Will I follow feelings or faith?

It’s not easy. But Jesus never said it would be. He simply promised it would be worth it.

“Whoever loses their life for My sake will find it.”

Following Jesus is costly. It requires everything. But if we’ve truly seen the worth of Christ how could we give Him anything less?

When we talk about being a “living sacrifice” to God, it can feel abstract something deeply spiritual, perhaps even distant. But the call to be a living sacrifice is incredibly practical. It means we offer all of who we are to God: our time, our talents, and our treasure.

It means our calendars, our gifts, and our bank accounts are no longer ours alone they belong to the Lord. And when we learn to surrender these things to Him daily, we step into a life that is rich with purpose, impact, and intimacy with God.

1. Time: Offering God Your Most Irreplaceable Resource

Time is the one thing we can never get back, and that’s why how we spend it reveals what we truly value.

It’s easy to fill our days with urgent tasks meetings, errands, responsibilities while letting our time with God become an afterthought. But Scripture says:

“Be very careful, then, how you live not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
—Ephesians 5:15–16

Giving God our time doesn’t just mean quiet time in the morning (though that’s powerful!). It also means:

Being present with others and showing up in love.
Creating space for rest and Sabbath so your soul can breathe.
Serving in your community or church, even when it’s inconvenient.

Time spent with God and for God is never wasted. In fact, it's where your soul is renewed and your purpose is clarified. Every moment offered to Him is multiplied for eternity.

2. Talents: Using Your Gifts for His Glory

Each of us has been uniquely gifted by God not for our own fame or comfort, but to bring light into a broken world.

Whether you’re good at organizing, encouraging, writing, teaching, fixing things, designing, leading, or simply listening you have something Heaven has placed in you to serve others.

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us…”
—Romans 12:6

When we withhold our talents from God, we rob the Body of Christ. But when we say, “Lord, this gift is Yours. Use it as You will,” miracles begin to happen.

You don’t have to be on a stage or behind a pulpit for your talents to matter. God uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways when they offer their gifts to Him.

So what has God placed in your hands?

A camera? A pen? A love for children? A heart for administration?

Offer it back to Him. Watch what He does with it.

3. Treasure: Honoring God With Your Finances

Money is one of the greatest tests of our heart’s allegiance. It can be a tool or a trap. That’s why Jesus spoke about it so often not because He wants our money, but because He wants our hearts.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

When we give God our treasure our finances we're declaring, “God, You are my provider, not my paycheck. My security is in You, not my savings.”

Tithing, generosity, and financial stewardship are acts of worship. They’re ways we show God that we trust Him more than we trust our bank accounts. They’re also how we partner with Heaven to fund the Gospel and meet real needs in the world.

It’s not about how much you give it’s about the posture of your heart. Are you willing to honor God with the first and best of what you have?

4. The Example of the Widow’s Offering

Jesus once watched people give large amounts of money at the temple. Then a poor widow came and gave just two small coins everything she had. And He said:

“Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.”
—Mark 12:43

Why? Because she gave out of her love and trust, not out of abundance.

That’s what God looks for not the quantity, but the quality of our surrender.

5. God Multiplies What We Offer

When we give God our time, talents, and treasure, we never lose. In fact, we gain more than we could ever imagine.

The boy who gave his small lunch five loaves and two fish saw it feed over 5,000 people. Why? Because he gave it to Jesus.

“Little is much when God is in it.”

Whatever you offer no matter how small becomes powerful when it’s placed in the hands of the King.

6. Living Sacrifice Is a Daily Choice

Romans 12:1 calls us to present our bodies our whole lives as living sacrifices. That includes your minutes, your gifts, and your wallet. This is true worship.

It may feel radical, but this is the kind of life that reflects the heart of Christ. He gave everything for us. How could we not give our all in return?

“He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?”

Final Thoughts: What Are You Holding Back?

Surrender is not just a one-time event it’s a daily lifestyle. And God is not after a portion of your life; He desires the whole thing. Not out of obligation, but out of relationship. Out of love.

What time do you need to give Him?

What part of your finances are you holding too tightly?

He’s not asking for perfection. He’s asking for your heart.

1. What Is Surrender?

The key word is daily. Yesterday’s surrender won’t carry you through today’s challenges. That’s why Jesus said:

To the world, this sounds foolish. But to those who have tasted the deep, soul-satisfying joy of walking closely with Jesus, it is the secret to true life.

So what does it mean to die to self, and why is it necessary for living a life fully devoted to Christ?

1. The Call to Die Before You Truly Live

When Jesus called His disciples, He didn’t promise them ease or comfort. He said, “Take up your cross.”

In the Roman world, the cross wasn’t a metaphor it was an instrument of execution. So when Jesus invited His followers to take up their cross, He was inviting them to die not physically, but to their will, their desires, their ego.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me…” —Galatians 2:20

This is the core of Christianity: we don’t just believe in Jesus we are united with Him in His death and resurrection. We lay down our old selves so that His life can rise in us.

2. What Dying to Self Looks Like Daily

Dying to self is not a one-time event; it’s a daily decision. It's saying:

“Not my will, but Yours, Lord.”
“I will forgive, even when I don’t feel like it.”
“I will serve, even when no one sees.”

The Apostle Paul makes it clear: the flesh and the Spirit are in conflict.

“For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit… They are in conflict with each other…” —Galatians 5:17

“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” —Galatians 5:24

This means we don’t give sin room to grow. We don’t justify disobedience. We don’t flirt with temptation. Instead, we put it to death so the Spirit can thrive within us.

4. Why Dying to Self Leads to Freedom

It sounds paradoxical, but it’s true: dying to self is the pathway to freedom.

When you die to self, you’re no longer bound by people-pleasing. You stop striving for worldly approval. You’re no longer a slave to sin, ego, or fear.

You become free to love purely, serve joyfully, and live boldly. You’re free to say, “Lord, whatever You want, I’ll do it,” and actually mean it.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” —2 Corinthians 3:17

The more you die to your own agenda, the more you come alive in God’s purpose.

5. Jesus: The Ultimate Example of Dying to Self

Jesus didn’t just talk about dying to self He lived it.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, faced with the weight of the cross, He prayed, “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” (Luke 22:42)

He laid down His divine rights, His comfort, and ultimately His life—for us.

And now He calls us to follow Him in that same surrender.

“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus… He humbled Himself and became obedient to death even death on a cross!” —Philippians 2:5–8

6. Resurrection Always Follows Death

Here's the hope: every time you die to self, God brings new life.

Die to fear, and rise in courage.
Die to pride, and rise in humility.
Die to sin, and rise in holiness.
Die to control, and rise in peace.

The cross is never the end it’s the beginning. Because just as Christ rose in power, you too will rise in purpose, in passion, and in the presence of God.

“If we have died with Him, we will also live with Him.” —2 Timothy 2:11

Final Thoughts: Will You Lay Your Life Down?

The invitation to follow Jesus is not an easy one. It costs everything. But it also gives you everything that truly matters peace, joy, purpose, eternal life.

So today, ask yourself:

What areas of my life am I still holding onto?
Where do I need to surrender and die to self?
What would it look like for Christ to fully live in me?

The altar is open. The cross is before you. Will you lay your life down?

Because in losing your life… you’ll finally find it.

There is a kind of worship that goes beyond singing. It transcends Sunday morning services. It seeps into our daily choices, our thought life, our relationships, and even our pain. This kind of worship is radical. It is total surrender. It is being a living sacrifice.

But what does that actually mean?

In Romans 12:1–2, the Apostle Paul uses language that would have shocked his original Jewish audience a living sacrifice? In the Old Testament, sacrifices were dead. They were offered on an altar, laid down completely, often representing atonement for sin. But Paul flips the script. Now, under the mercy of Jesus, we are not called to die on an altar, but to live fully yielded, fully surrendered, fully available to God.

Let’s dive into what this looks like in our everyday lives.

1. “In View of God’s Mercy…” A Response to Grace

Paul begins with a plea: "I urge you..." This isn’t a suggestion; it’s an impassioned appeal. But notice the motivation—God’s mercy.

We don't surrender to earn God’s love; we surrender because of His love.

Look back on your life. Look at the cross. Reflect on the grace, the forgiveness, the second chances. When we truly grasp the mercy we've received, the only reasonable response is full surrender.

“We love because He first loved us.” —1 John 4:19

“While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” —Romans 5:8

You don’t need to be perfect to surrender. You just need to be willing. Let mercy move you.

2. “Offer Your Bodies…” Surrendering the Whole Self

When Paul says “bodies,” he means your entire being your time, energy, gifts, desires, plans, dreams, sexuality, relationships, finances… everything.

This isn't partial. This isn't conditional. This is complete surrender.

“You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” —1 Corinthians 6:19–20

To offer your body means to give God your hands to serve, your mouth to speak life, your feet to go where He sends, and your heart to love deeply even when it’s hard.

It’s daily. It's intentional. It's costly.

3. “Holy and Pleasing to God…” The Call to Purity

God isn’t asking for perfection, but He is asking for purity. The Old Testament sacrifices had to be without blemish. In the same way, God desires a life that is set apart, not stained by the patterns of this world.

“Be holy, because I am holy.” —1 Peter 1:16

This means saying no to compromise. No to gossip, to sexual immorality, to greed, pride, or bitterness. Not because God is harsh but because He’s holy, and we are made in His image.

Holiness isn’t legalism. It’s love. It’s living in a way that says, “God, I want nothing to come between us.”

4. “This Is Your True and Proper Worship…” Worship Is More Than a Song

Worship isn’t confined to church walls or music lyrics. Worship is obedience. Worship is how you love your spouse, how you do your work, how you treat strangers, how you endure suffering.

True worship is living every day for the glory of God.

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” —1 Corinthians 10:31

You may never sing on a stage, but if you live a surrendered life you are offering a melody heaven hears loud and clear.

5. “Do Not Conform… But Be Transformed” A Different Kind of Living

To be a living sacrifice is to live in constant transformation. The world says, “Do what makes you happy.” God says, “Do what makes you holy.”

The world says, “Follow your heart.” God says, “Guard your heart.”

This transformation happens as we renew our minds with the Word of God, with truth, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” —Psalm 119:105

You cannot live surrendered if your mind is saturated with lies. Replace the lies of culture with the truth of Scripture. That is how you become transformed from the inside out.

6. Daily, Not One-Time

Notice Paul says living sacrifice, not once-living. This is not a one-time altar call, but a daily choice.

You crawl on the altar every morning.

You say, “Here I am, Lord. Not my will, but Yours be done.”

And some days, you’ll want to crawl off. But God, in His faithfulness, meets you with fresh mercy each time.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” —Lamentations 3:22–23

Final Thoughts: The Altar is the Safest Place

It may sound scary to fully surrender. To give God control. To be a living sacrifice.

But here’s the beautiful paradox: the altar is the safest place. Because what you place in God’s hands, He multiplies. What you surrender, He sanctifies. What you lay down, He lifts up.

And in the end, you’ll find that the life you gave away is the one worth living.

“Whoever loses their life for My sake will find it.” —Matthew 10:39

So today, choose surrender. Choose worship. Choose transformation.
