Ever wonder how you could possibly record or rip a song that’s being streamed across the Internet onto your computer for free? Trying to download streaming audio directly to your computer can be quite difficult because different sites have different security measures put in place, so one program might work for one site, but not another.

However, one surefire way of recording streaming audio from any web site is to simply capture it via the sound card on your computer. Basically, there are programs that can record whatever is being played by your computer’s speakers, so if you can hear it, it can be recorded. Of course, you’ll have to listen to the entire song since the recording is live, but it’s definitely much easier than trying to download the file from the web site directly.

There are two programs that I use to capture and save streaming audio: one installs as a toolbar into Internet Explorer or FireFox and the other one is a standalone program.

If you don’t mind having another toolbar installed in your browser window, FreeCorder is a very convenient program to use if you’re going to be recording music that’s mostly played via the web, such as Internet radio, etc. Also, it has many other features that make it quite useful, such as the ability to extract audio from videos and record from your PC’s microphone or line-in port. It also supports Windows Vista and has absolutely no spyware or adware, so you don’t have to worry about pop-ups, etc. You can save the recordings out as MP3 or as WAV files.

Once you have it installed, click on the Settings button to configure the source for the sounds or music.

By default, the “Record From Freecorder Audio Driver” is selected and this will record anything that is being played through your speakers. If you have a Windows input device, such as a microphone, you can select the second or third option. However, remember to de-select the other options and only have one checkbox checked at a time, otherwise it creates a separate file for each source.

You can also change the output format to WAV, prompt for a filename or automatically timestamp it, and choose the location for the destination files. Now start playing some music on your computer and press the red Record button. A little box will pop up and you should see the green line moving up and down. The nice thing about this program is that you can have your laptop sound on Mute or have your speakers turned off and it will still record whatever is being played.

Click Stop when you’re finished and then click Play to view your recordings. And that’s it! A pretty easy and cool way to record any sound or music off the Internet or from your computer.

If you don’t like the idea of cluttering up your browser toolbar, you can use a standalone program called MP3MyMP3 Recorder, which is also free. Like FreeCorder, this program also records whatever is being played by your computer’s speakers. However, unlike FreeCorder, this program requires that your sound NOT be muted. So if you want to record anything, it has to be playing and you have to be able to hear it yourself.

Also, by default, MP3MyMP3 tries to record from your microphone and not your sound card, so click on the Source button and choose Stereo Mix as the sound source. The recording quality for both of the products was very good and sounded just like the originals from what I could tell. Personally, I like FreeCorder better, but MP3MyMP3 is also a fine alternative.

How do you record cassette tapes to PC/Computer

So you have a bunch of old audio cassettes that you want to copy or transfer to your computer? There are many programs out there that you can buy which will help to try and make the process as simple as possible! However, since I’m a techie and my blog is all about easy to understand computer tips, I’m going to try and teach you how you can transfer audio cassettes to your computer for free!

What you’ll need before you can copy cassettes to your computer or PC:

1. Audacity – Free recording and editing software

2. Cassette Tape Deck with RCA output jacks

3. Stereo RCA cable with mini-jack connector

4. Sound card with line-in jack (usually in blue)

Step 1: Connect tape deck to computer

The first thing you’ll need to do in order to record the audio from a cassette tape is to connect the tape deck to the computer itself. You’re going to need the Stereo RCA cable with mini-jack for this step.

Go ahead and connect the male RCA side of the cable (red and white) into the female RCA connectors on the tape deck. Make sure that the RCA jacks on the tape deck say “Line Out” or “Audio Out“.

Now it’s time to connect the other end of the cable to your computer. If you’re using the RCA cable with mini-jack connector on the other end, then simply plug it into the female Line-In jack on the back of your computer (the blue one out of the three). However, if you have an RCA cable that has red and white RCA connectors on both ends, you’ll need to buy a mini-jack stereo adapter shown below.

However, if you’re going to be buying this, you may as well buy a cable with the mini-jack already on the other end! Using an adapter may cause a loss of audio quality.

If you’re using a Dell, it should be color coded, which makes it much easier to figure out where to connect it to. Basically, it’s the blue colored jack that is your Line In.

Step 2: Record audio from cassette tape using Audacity

Now that you have your cassette tape deck connected to the computer, we can use the open-source audio recording and editing software Audacity to capture the audio.

Firstly, open Audacity and click on Edit and then Preferences way at the bottom. If it’s not already there, click on Audio I/O in the left hand menu. This is where you can select the Input Source that you want to record sound from. You should see a section heading called Recording and under that a drop down menu called Device.

Make sure that you do NOT pick Microsoft SoundMapper if you’re on a Windows machine. It should be something similar to what you see above or something like “Line-In:Realtek HD Device“, etc. You can try all of the options in the drop down until you actually get the sound to record, one of them will work.

Now you simply need to adjust the volume for your recording by clicking on the downward pointing arrow on the right hand (red) VU recording level meters.

Now click on Monitor Input or Start Monitoring. Now when you begin recording by clicking the Record button, if you see the sound is going too far to the right (red bars), then you can adjust the input volume level by dragging the slider to the left in the Mixer Toolbar (which is slightly lower and to the left of the recording levels meters.

When you are finished recording, go ahead and click the Stop button (yellow color) and go to File and choose Save Project As. This is will save it as a Audacity project so that you can come back and edit it later.

To export the final edited version of your recording to MP3 or WAV format, click on File and choose Export As. You can then take these MP3s and burn them to CD or import then into iTunes. You can choose between WAV, AIFF, OGG, FLAC, and MP2 format for exporting.

Remember you can always pause the recording at any time if there are parts of the cassette tape you don’t want transferred to your computer. Otherwise, you should now a digital version of your audio cassettes!

How to Create Bootable USB Stick for Windows 7, Windows Server 2K8 and Windows Vista.

I recently had the need to install Windows 7 from a USB stick. This was because I didn't have a working DVD drive to hand. I found a couple of tutorials online explaining how to create the disk.They generally explained this technique:

Requirements : USB Pen Drive (Minimum 4 GB), Windows Operating System DVD or ISO image (32 bit or 64 bit)

Go to COMMAND prompt, Type C:\> diskpart

(You may see an error sometimes. Therefor don't forget to run COMMAND prompt

using Run as Administrator option)

DISKPART> list disk

Select the USB device from the list and substitute the disk number below when necessary

DISKPART> select disk 1

DISKPART> clean

DISKPART> create partition primary

DISKPART> select partition 1

DISKPART> active

DISKPART> format fs=fat32

DISKPART> assign

DISKPART> exit

xcopy X:\*.* /s/e/f Y:\

where X:\ is your mounted image or physical DVD and Y:\ is your USB device

However it appears diskpart is unable to see USB sticks under Windows XP. Therefor those using Windows XP I have found an alternative method.

Firstly find the bootsect.exe tool on the Windows 7 disc (in the boot directory). Then run this command where Y is the drive letter of the USB stick.

D:\boot> bootsect.exe /nt60 Y:

Now copy all the files from the Windows 7 disc onto the USB stick. This can be done by dragging in the GUI or using the xcopy method shown previously.

(You may see an error sometimes. Therefor don't forget to run" add-sdp.bat " file using Run as Administrator option)

3. Double click the key WriteProtect in the right pane and set the value to 0 in the Value Data Box and press OK button

4. Exit Registry, restart your computer and then again re-connect your USB pen drive on your computer. That is it, done.

Why you should backup Gmail?

If you are not a huge fan of desktop applications or if you think that setting up a Gmail backup plan involves way too much effort, you can consider creating a backup of your Gmail account in the cloud itself. Before we get into the details, here are three situations where an online backup of Gmail messages will come handy:

Reason #1 - If your main Gmail account gets hacked, you will still have access to all your previous emails.

Reason #2 – If you delete an important email from your Gmail Inbox by mistake, you can easily retrieve it from the online backup. Google Apps Premier has Postini to restore deleted emails, here you’re getting that facility for free.

Reason #3 - If the Gmail service goes down (yes, it happens), you will still be able to read your older emails. Gmail outage won’t affect work.

Backup your Gmail Messages Online

There are three services that can help you automatically backup your Gmail (and Google Apps) email accounts online and luckily, they won’t cost you anything.

The first and most obvious choice is Gmail. Create a new Gmail account and under Settings –> Accounts and Import –> Check mail using POP3 –> Add POP3 email account, enter the email address of your main Gmail account that you want to backup.

Within an hour or so, the online mail fetcher program will pull messages from your main Gmail account and will copy them to your new “backup” account. In my limited testing, I found that Gmail’s mail fetcher left all the messages that were either “read” or have been previously downloaded by another POP3 client so it's not "true backup."

That brings us to another alternative – copy your Gmail mailbox to Windows Live Hotmail. While you can add a Gmail account to Hotmail using POP3 (just like Gmail’s mail fetcher), there’s a much better and reliable option out there for copying emails from Gmail into Hotmail and it's called TrueSwitch.

Setup a new Hotmail account and TrueSwitch, an awesome web-based email account migration service, will copy all your emails and attachments from Gmail to your new Hotmail address. If you have a relatively large Gmail Inbox, the backup process might take up to 24 hours but you’ll get an email as soon as the transfer is complete.

Like Gmail, Hotmail too offers “expanding” storage so it can possibly fit your large Google inbox as well. You can then add your Gmail address to Hotmail (click “Add an email account” in the sidebar) and this will ensure that new messages that land in your Gmail inbox in the future are also saved in Hotmail.

That said, both the services discussed above have one common drawback – they’ll always backup your entire Gmail mailbox and you cannot limit the backup process to a specific set of folders (or labels in Gmail). So if you have a fairly large mailbox and don’t want to backup each and every Gmail folder (or label), try Backupify.

Backupify, as you know, can backup your online accounts (including Gmail) to Amazon S3 and a unique point about Backupify is that it lets you specify labels that should be included in the backup process. The messages are stored in the cloud as EML files that you can view inside Outlook or, you can change the .eml extension to .mht, and read the file inside IE.

Backupify supports XOauth so you can add your Gmail account to the service without having to share your Google Account credentials. They are not using a very practical format for saving messages but the advantage is that Backupify will scan your selected mailbox folders every single day for new emails and will archive them automatically.

Publish the Same Blog Post to Multiple Blogging Sites at Once

You got multiple blogs hosted on different blogging platforms and are looking for simple ways to cross-post or publish the same blog post on all these blogs at once.

Solution: There are several options / workarounds but my favorite is Blog It! – this blogging editor is available as a Facebook application and lets you send the same article to multiple blogs in one go.
You first associate all your different blog accounts with Blog It! and then check the ones where you want to publish that particle post. The blog editor supports only plain text but it can correctly parse all the included HTML tags.

And though Blog It! is a product of TypePad, it works will all popular blog platforms like Tumblr, Blogger, WordPress.com, self-hosted WordPress, Movable Type and LiveJournal.
Write To My Blog is a web based blog editor that lets you compose and simultaneously post the same blog entry on to three different blog services. It supports Blogger, WordPress and all other engines that implement the MetaWeblog API.
You may use the service without registration though in that case you'll have to add the blog details each time you publish a new blog post.

The workaround in that case is that you compose a post, publish it on Blog A, change the current blog from A to B, republish the same post again and so on. This is slightly tedious but you get a more user-friendly blog editor and there's support for more platforms including Drupal, Windows Live Spaces, Xanga, etc.
My next recommendation is either Windows Live Writer or ScribeFire for Firefox. Now these are full-featured blog editors with image uploading capabilities and a WYSIWYG interface and support all blogging platforms but won't let you publish the same article on multiple blogs at once.

Facebook has unveiled Facebook Messenger, an Android and iPhone app dedicated to sending messages and texts through the world’s largest social network.
The mobile app, which is now available in the Android Marketplace and iOS App Store, is the direct result of its March acquisition of group messaging app Beluga. Facebook Messenger is the first mobile application the company has developed and released outside of its official Facebook app.
“It’s a mobile app about real-time communication,” Beluga co-founder and Facebook engineer Ben Davenport told the media. All messages are sent and received in real time — no refreshing required.
The app, much like Beluga, is simple and straightforward. Once users log into Messenger with their Facebook credentials, they’re taken to a screen with all of their recent Facebook chats and messages. Users can jump into any of their past conversations or create a new one. Messages can either be sent via Facebook Messenger or via SMS.

Users can also send photos to their friends with the app. It also lets you give message threads a name, for easier organization.
One of the key elements of Messenger is its alert system. Users can choose to receive alerts for new messages, or they can turn them off. They can also delay alerts for an hour or until 8:00 a.m. the next day. The alert settings can be tailored for individual message threads or for all messages through Messenger.
Facebook admits its official mobile app will eventually have all of Messenger’s functionality, but the company believes that having an app dedicated to quick messaging on the Facebook platform is something that will benefit its millions of mobile users. If you service your Page content from a regular (http) connection, all they’ll see is a “turn off secure browsing” warning messages.

You can easily avoid this issue with the help of Google Sites.

How to Create a Facebook App for your Page

Enough of theory, let’s now get our hands dirty and build a custom tab app for our Facebook Page.

Step 1: Open Google Sites and create a new site. Choose “Blank Slate” for the theme and set the width as 500px (the Facebook Pages canvas can be 520px wide).

Step 2: Create a new page in Google Sites and add some content to this page using either the built-in WYSIWYG editor or switch to the HTML view for any custom code. You may insert images, maps, videos, and everything else just like a regular HTML page.

Step 3: Switch to Facebook and search for the “Developer” app. Add this to your Facebook Profile and then click on the button that says “Create a new App”. Give your app a name and also add an icon since it will show up in your Facebook page.

Step 4: Under Facebook –> Canvas Settings, set the URLs for Canvas and Tab the same as your Google Site’s URL. The regular Canvas /Tab URL should point to the http version of the Google Sites while the Secure Canvas /Tab URL should use the https version.

Step 5: We are almost done. On the “Canvas Settings” page itself, click “View App Profile Page” followed by “Add to My Page” to add that app to any of your Facebook Pages as a new “tab.” If you wish to create more tabs for your custom Facebook Page, you just have to create new apps using the same steps.

Germen Dog gives birth to 17 puppies

A dog in Germany has given birth to 17 puppies, leaving their owner thrilled but fatigued after having to feed them with a bottle for several weeks because their mother couldn't cope with the demand.
Owner Ramona Wegemann said she barely slept for more than a couple of minutes without interruption during about four weeks in an "exhausting" struggle to make sure all of the purebred Rhodesian ridgeback puppies would survive.
She said when she was "finished feeding the last puppy, the first was hungry again".

Wegemann's dog Etana gave birth to eight female and nine male puppies in Ebereschenhof, which is near Berlin, on September 28.
At least five times a day, Wegemann gave the dogs a bottle with special milk because their mother's nipples could never have coped with the demand, and when the puppies were not hungry, they wanted to be entertained, she said.

Wegemann said when dogs give birth to so many puppies several of them die within the first week.
"But all of our puppies survived. This is incredible and wonderful," the 32-year-old added.
It was the second time that Etana gave birth. She gave birth to eight puppies in her first pregnancy, not uncommon for the dog's breed, Wegemann said.
"The birth of the puppies was very special. All puppies were born naturally, no caesarean was necessary," she added. It took Etana a full 26 hours to give birth to all of the puppies - and Wegemann was as baffled as amazed.
But caring for 17 puppies turned out to be a full-time job: Wegemann put her work as an independent animal psychiatrist on hold and her husband took as much holiday as he could.
Their lives have been turned upside down by the puppies, and their living room is now occupied by a giant box that houses the puppies.
But even Wegemann still struggles to recognize them: the females puppies are called Bahati, Binta, Bahya, Bashima, Batouuli, Binki, Bora, Bisa and the male ones are Baakir, Banjoku, Belay, Bruk, Bundu, Bayo, Bukekayo, Biton and Bulus.
Wegemann gave them all African names because the Rhodesian ridgeback is an African hunting dog.

Skype outage sparks criticism

Internet phone service Skype is facing criticism over its handling of a software failure that brought down connections for millions of consumers and businesses in the US, Europe and Asia.

Skype blamed the problem on the failure of "supernodes", parts of Skype's peer-to-peer network that facilitate calls between users, at about 8.30pm on Wednesday night (22DEC). When some of those failed, the reminder of the network struggled to cope with traffic that typically handles 25m calls at once.

But Skype was slow to respond to the problem, leaving users in the dark without any updates or advice on the company's official blog, with a minimal message on Twitter that said it was investigating the problem.

A spokesperson dismissed the suggestion that the problem was due to sabotage. "Skype has no evidence to suggest that this was a malicious attack. We've identified a bug in the Skype software which was the root cause of the downtime."

Veteran telecoms blogger Om Malik said the service has become "part of the economic fabric for startups and small businesses around the world", adding that its massive infrastructure should mean it is protected against major outages.

"The outage comes at a time when Skype is starting to ask larger corporations for their business. If I am a big business, I would be extremely cautious about adopting Skype for business, especially in the light of this current outage," said Malik, adding that Skype is keen to attract more lucrative corporate business.

Though Skype was keen to point out that the problem had not affected users of its Skype Connect business product, Malik said the problem demonstrates Skype "is slowly starting to ignore its core and passionate user base who are happy to spend money on its products - consumers and small businesses".

A post by Peter Parkes on Skype's blog said Skype was working to create new "mega-supernodes" to get the system up to speed, and by mid-afternoon yesterday (23DEC) claimed it had recovered to handle around ten million calls - 40% of its typical capacity.

Skype has built a vast and loyal user base by offering a free basic product that allows users to call each other from anywhere in the world for free. It claims 124 million monthly users as of June 2010, and half a billion registered users.

Its last major outage was in August 2007 when part of a Windows update left some users Skypeless for two days
