The Deceitfulness of Sin

"Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called 'Today,' lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin" (Heb 3:12-13). Sin loves to deceive the people of God. Too many Christians fall for sin's deceitfulness. This sermon explores why sin is so deceitful that Christians might not fall into Satan's trap.

Memorial Day remembers the sacrifice of brave men and women who willingly died for the defense of the United States of America. The Christian has another reason to remember a brave sacrifice: the death of Jesus on the cross. Each Lord's Day, the Christian remembers Jesus' sacrifice as he partakes of the Lord's Supper.

The elders at the Dale Ridge Church of Christ and I sat down to discuss what should be taught on Wednesday evenings. One of the elders, wanting to make application from the Old Testament, suggested that we explore Old Testament prophecies of Jesus Christ. While such a study was a daunting undertaking (especially at first), that study has richly blessed my life. I pray that it might also bless your life.

We have all known the frustration of getting tickled at the wrong time in the wrong place. Sara also gets tickled at the wrong time--when God informs Abraham that Sarah will bear a child. In the narrative of Genesis 18, we learn a great deal about God. This sermon seeks to help us understand something more of God.

Everyone has something which frightens him--spiders, snakes, or, in my case, tornadoes. There is nothing wrong with fear, per se. Yet, when fear stands in the way of our Christianity, "Jesus asks us to face our fears." Ananias, a disciple in Damascus overcame his fear to go to Saul and teach him the gospel. Modern Christians must be willing to face their fears and do right.

We live in a society where people honestly believe that they can determine what is right and wrong for themselves. "Do whatever makes you happy," people will say. Or, maybe some will say, "You can't tell me what to do with my life." Man has lived through a period that is almost identical--the Period of the Judges. "In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes."

The Third Day

Math has never been my strong suit. In fact, I'm not very good at math at all. However, there is one number I know quite well: THREE. God raised Jesus on the third day.

In sharing the Gospel with Cornelius and his household, Peter makes clear that Jesus' resurrection on the third day is very significant. This sermon looks at the importance of "The Third Day."

The church where I am working is recovering from division. Reconciliation has occurred and the church is moving more and more toward healing. This sermon is an attempt to help with that healing.

Jesus prayed for His church to be unified, and the modern church needs to be active in working for the unity of believers.

Jesus Calls a Sinner

Matthew, before Jesus called him, apparently lived a life of sin. At least, the Pharisees believed Matthew was a sinner. Yet, Jesus called Matthew. Jesus saw Matthew as redeemable. Jesus saw Matthew as one capable of great things in the kingdom. Jesus still calls sinners. Jesus still sees people as redeemable and as capable of much in His kingdom.
