A small patch of land that yielded a paltry crop of insignificant tiny vegetables.

The Philistines had gathered together into a troop that day, determined to take the field of beans… Lentiles.

Just a bunch of beans.
Not worth the struggle.
Never really liked them beans anyway.
Just let it go.
Didn’t even plant that stupid field… our parents did.
Just go find another field.

But someone stood up. Shammah did. He knew that old field was more than a bunch of beans.

It represented everything worth fighting for… worth living for… worth dying for.

If they gave up the field, the fence was next.

If they gave up the fence, the barn was next.

If they gave up the barn, the house was next.

If they gave up the house, the family was next.

If they gave up the family, everything was lost.

All because they gave up the field of beans. Tasteless old, undignified, worthless beans. Hand-me-down beans.

As the Philistines approached and the rest of the people vacated their property, Shammah sauntered out to the middle of the field of beans. Armed with a racing heart and a determination to preserve a generation,Shammah defended that insignificant patch of ground and slew every last enemy that threatened to take it away. Because he believed in the value of the beans.

Whatever you do, don’t give away the field.

As a schoolgirl, I had the opportunity of touring a steel treating plant near Detriot, MI. A tour guide was assigned to our class group and we followed her around the plant, over cat-walks, through tunnels and in and out of observation decks. I was fascinated by it all.

At one point she stopped to allow us to view the purging process. We were standing in an observation deck. Below us was darkness. Oppressive heat and the smell of fire rose toward us. Huge rectangular containers held the molten steel within the furnaces. As our eyes grew accustomed to the dimness, men in bulky, protective suits and welding helmets pulled the switches controlling furnace doors. A warning sounded that was impossible to ignore.

Once the doors were open, you could see black “spots” on the surface of the white hot metal. Using long handled ladles, they scraped off the black sludge as it rose to the surface. Sparks flew in the darkness like sparklers on the 4th of July when the black sludge was poured into nearby containers. Our guide explained that this purging process was repeated – until the steel was pure.

As she led the class on to the next station, some of the boys began scuffling and fooling around. A little notepad belonging to one of them flew over the rail and down into the open furnace. I watched as it fell. To my amazement, there wasn’t even a flash of fire. One second, it was falling – the next second, it simply wasn’t there – it had been utterly consumed, unforgettable impression.
You see, God’s design and desire for His people has always been holiness. Anything less must (sooner or later) be judged and eradicated; consumed in the presence of a Holy God.

We do not hire inexperienced workers at the same rate as experienced. Our clients also don’t expect to be charged the experienced rate for our junior designers. In addition, we have one rate for local work, and another for work we do in the San Francisco valley because of the demand and value of our work. Further, many of our contracts reflect hourly rate plus travel expenses, and lodging if necessary.

What I’m getting at is, there is a reason and an expectation for paying based on value and other factors.

If an evangelist is full-time, deriving his livelihood from his ministry, and I’m the only single service he has for the week, I believe he needs to earn a week’s equivalent wage from me. If I can get him a second or third service for the week, I try to. If so, I usually give less than a full week’s wage, knowing it will be filled out by the others.

If a minister isn’t deriving his livelihood from preaching out, I don’t believe it’s necessary to give an offering equivalent to a week’s wage. In those cases, I use a $200-$300 per service rule. The low end being local and/or less experienced, and the higher for more experienced. I also try to add what would be necessary for travel expenses, and pay for lodging. If they don’t require lodging, I sometimes add extra to their honorarium.

I’ve been preaching for 26 years, evangelized for 4 years, pastored for 11 years and when I preach out, the average I receive per service is around $200. Sometimes as low as $100, and sometimes as high as $300 per service. Usually, though, around $200-$250.

Our District pays $300 for each speaking slot, plus travel and lodging expenses. So, if a minister comes and speaks once, they will get $300 plus expenses. If he speaks 3 times, he’ll get $900 plus expenses.

I don’t know how it’s done elsewhere, but that’s how it’s done here.

About 18 years ago, a well-respected elder among us stood in his church’s pulpit and apologized for the way he had been teaching some things, and the expectations he had laid on his saints. He took a long time that night to explain clear, biblical teaching on things like facial hair, pants-length, entertainment, etc.

I remember hearing the news of this and being heart-broken… so shocked that what had been long-held understandings among us were being “let down”. What I saw from a distance was frightening to me, because I was among those who strongly felt the way they did before his message. I thought they were going “Charismatic”, whatever that was.

It was after a few years of observance that I realized this church hadn’t crossed any line biblically. They hadn’t started teaching crazy doctrines, or let down Bible demarcations of separation. They had just begun being honest about what the Bible said, and how to apply it in our culture.

This pastor is still very respected among us, and has authored many books that bless the fellowship. His church has sent out missionaries both foreign and domestic, and their church is a revival hub.

His approach to scripture, standards and discipleship is refreshing and honest, both to God and men. He didn’t leave the Truth, and didn’t steer the ship in a polar-opposite direction like some others have. He just did the right thing.

I understand how strong tradition can be. I understand how delicate it needs to be dealt with in order not to destroy the faith of those who have lived with it. But I believe with prayer, care, and wisdom, we can be honest about some things that perhaps fear, peer pressure, and embarrassment have kept us from.

If you know me at all, you would know I am biblically conservative, and respectful of others. I care about how my ministry is perceived, but more concerned about how God evaluates the way I divide his word and disciple his people.

I pray for the day when we can stop shaming others openly or around restaurant tables for offending our sensibilities of tradition and, in some cases, our ignorance.

Empire State ordered to leave Christian man’s Bible message alone

Posted: December 23, 2008
By Alyssa Farah

A New York man has won a battle with the New York Department of Transportation over a trailer he parked on his private property along a public highway that was targeted because of its Christian message.

Daniel Burritt installed a tractor-trailer for his company, Acts II Construction Inc., on private business property along U.S. Route 11 in 2007.

In May he got a letter from the New York State Department of Transportation stating that his trailer violated a state law and constituted a “public nuisance.” The NYDOT said a permit had to be obtained or the trailer would be forcibly removed and legal action would follow, even though the agency does not require permits for commercial messages being displayed.

Burritt’s legal counsel objected to the NYDOT’s requirement for a permit, saying it penalized him because of his faith.

(Story continues below)

“Christians shouldn’t be singled out and penalized for sharing their beliefs,” Alliance Defense Fund Legal Counsel Matt Bowman said. “We are pleased the court recognizes that displaying a religious message on private property has always been protected under the First Amendment.”

Bowman said the state violated the Constitution by treating religion in a less favorable manner than business, because it did not take into account that a central aspect of the Burritt’s construction business is evangelism.

ADF attorneys filed suit on behalf of Burritt in June and reached an agreement with the NYDOT to allow the trailer to stay until a decision could be reached. A state district court decision now has ordered the state to allow the sign to remain.

By Charles Grisham

Oh cleansing fir burn in me,
Purge my soul and set me free,
Remove each stain of sinfulness,
That I may in Thy presence rest

Cast far away my vain desires,
Refresh my soul in revival fires,
Come again thy wonders reveal,
Oh bless me now is my appeal

Prepare each heart to look above,
A world that’s lost and void of love,
Give us a burden, a vision too,
Oh how we long to be with You

What joy awaits the faithful ones,
The Master’s smile, the words, “well done,”
A crown of life, a race complete,
What bliss awaits at His dear feet.

http://www.infowars.com/nevada-governor-blasts-feds-first-amendment-area-in-bundy-dispute/

Here’s what’s happening…
There’s an endangered desert tortoise that the government’s Bureau of Land Management is trying to save on a man’s personally owned property. So, they come in and round up all his cattle to take them away. Now, that’s not the part I’m focusing on…

When the owner and others protested (1st Amendment), the government set up a small fenced in area and put a “Free Speech Area” sign on it, telling them they could only express their free speech in that area. Someone duly noted, “1st Amendment is not an area!”

Here’s a spiritual application… Satan is happy allowing Christians to be Christians as long as they only express such in limited areas, such as inside the church. If he can keep them confined to a place that doesn’t make a difference, they can be all the Christian they want to be.

But… Being a Christian is not an area.

Titus 1:15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.
