This weekend I did something I don’t normally do, I went to the cinema to see a movie. Something that is so uncommon, the last movie I saw at one was Horrible Bosses, which I thought was really funny, but pretty shallow beyond that. Yesterday I saw Chronicle, a Sci-Fi/Thriller about three high school students who develop super powers through mysterious circumstances.

The movie takes place through cameras that are already present in the world. In other words, the actors are aware they are being filmed. The main character, Andrew, is chronicling his life (no lie, I just figured out how they got the title of the movie), carrying his camera with him everywhere he goes. This works well because his telekinesis allows him to make the camera float around when all three boys are onscreen. At other times cell phone cameras, security cameras and police helicopter cameras are also used. It’s a technique that isn’t used very often is movies, as a matter of fact I never seen another movie that did it, but I’m sure there have been some.

I only have two problems with the movie. The first is that they don’t really explain where the powers came from. It shows the boys going through a cave underground and finding this glowing boulder, then later going back and being unable to access it again. However they never said what the boulder was, where it came from or how they got their powers from it.

My second issue was with the ending. They don’t say what happens with Andrew’s cousin, Matt. They kinda wrap up the movie with him at the end but don’t show any aftermath from the movie’s climax or what he does moving forward with his powers. I’d like to know if he returned to face the consequences of the climax or went into seclusion.

It takes a little while to get going, but once it does, it’s good. I enjoyed it enough to recommend as a solid Sci-Fi/Thriller. I’d probably go see it again for the matinee price.

According to Crystal Dynamics global brand director Karl Stewart, Tomb Raider fans looking to play this fall’s heavily hyped reboot of the series will have to do it on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, or PC.  He stated there are currently no plans to port the game for the Wii U launch or any other Nintendo platform.

The reason given for no port was that if they did make one, Crystal Dynamics would want to approach it differently and build it to take advantage of the unique functionality of the Wii U.  Whether that’s polite PR-speak to keep from burning bridges or a sign that the generational tradition of third party developers abandoning Nintendo consoles has already started before the Wii U could even launch, we’ll have to wait and see.  At any rate, it’s tough news for Nintendo fans that like Tomb Raider.

No word yet on an exact release date for the new Tomb Raider aside from the general “holiday season” but we should learn more about that as well as the games that will be on Wii U as we approach this year’s E3.

I’ve been known to dally in Minecraft from time to time and one of the things I’ve enjoyed is the number of mods the community has created.  This little mod here lets you create a helicopter in your cubist world and explore your randomly generated world.  What I find impressive, since one of my hobbies in Minecraft is training to be a demolitions expert with TNT, is it includes weaponry.  I for one look forward to being able to blast holes in mountain sides without having to spend the time of littering the whole thing with TNT and running like hell after I set it off.

On a somewhat related note, I love how at the end of the video the helicopter crashes into a building in his city and sets fire to it.  As someone who thought a quick way to clear out leaves would be to set them on fire, only to see the whole mountain side become a constantly burning Hell for the forest creatures, I like seeing people inadvertently set their creations ablaze.

We knew Resident Evil 6 was coming but now we have a trailer and release date.

Seemingly out of nowhere, Capcom unveiled a new trailer for Resident Evil 6 and announced a release date of November 20th of this year.  The release coming so soon was a bit of a surprise considering we’re already getting Resident Evil:  Operation Raccoon City on March 20th.  While RE:ORC is a mutiplayer tactical shooter made by former SOCOM developer Slant Six featuring a non-canon “what if” style story set between Resident Evil 2 and 3, RE6 is a full fledged sequel working from and building upon 15 years of story from the last five games.

While the trailer’s action came fast and furious, we’ve got some early details about the story and gameplay.  Resident Evil 6 is set 10 years after the original Raccoon City outbreak in the first game.  Instead of one single setting, you play multiple plots.  In one, you play as Leon Kennedy, exploring an outbreak in a small American city called Tall Oaks.  The other storyline features Chris Redfield fighting zombies and monsters in a bright and busy Chinese city.  The trailer hints mercenaries will play a big part in the story.  Rather than the Ganados from Resident Evil 4 and Majini from the 5th game, it looks like we’re back to regular zombies and monsters similar to the early games in the series.

The co-op gameplay from RE5 returns, with the game allowing two players to play couch co-op offline or up to six online.  In addition, there’s another unnamed online multiplayer mode that allows up to eight players.

The trailer shows fast-paced gameplay similar to the Rambo-esque style of the last two games rather than the slower and more sparse combat from the earlier games.  In addition, there’s a new cover mechanic added to the gunfights and we might even be able to move while shooting in this one.  Dave Turner, Capcom UK’s head of marketing, said Resident Evil 6 was developed as a faster paced action oriented game to appeal to fans of games like Call of Duty.

The action-based gameplay upsets some longtime fans of the series.  The 4th and 5th game were already controversial because they traded scary moments from the early games for excitement and gun battles.  The admission that Capcom’s going even further in that direction has some online communities upset that the series is moving too far away from what they originally loved.  On the other hand, hardcore gamers complain when Activision doesn’t change enough between Call of Duty sequels, so maybe this is a situation where fans are just too fickle to totally please.

At any rate, Resident Evil 6 already looks like another fun entry in the series.  These are just the first details Capcom’s unveiled, we should know even more in the near future.
