Missing My {Wo}Man Cave

The garage-workshop is starting to look great.

The drywall is all up, and my Dad and I will finish “mudding” it today… then paint this weekend!

There’s still a ton to do, and a few special things I’m hoping for {new pull-down attic ladder, washer, dryer, sink}.

It’s been weird not having my workshop though.

All my projects have been on hold while my table saw slowly rusts under a tarp in the back yard, and my tools are spread in piles throughout the house.

I’ll be inspired to do a project, and in my mind I reach for the tool off my pegboard tool storage book, and then… remember… that it’s somewhere in a pile in the guest room.

I think it’s making me a little depressed. I was sick for 7 weeks too, with seriously sore ribs from coughing. Now that I’m finally feeling better I’m ready to build and blog (and maybe clean… maybe ).

More reason to hurry up and git’er done!

Let’s Blow This Joint {Blow-In Insulation}

We got a lot done today and I feel good {and tired!}

First I spent Saturday night {with a pair of flashlights} scrambling to finish the electrical work before the insulation went in today.

We got our insulation blowed-in, blew-in, installed, in under 4 hours {‘course it was only 360 sq. feet of wall – so we’re pretty slow}.

It’s a dirty job. I wouldn’t want to do this in the house…

The vapor barrier held quite well {I was worried the pressure from the insulation might pop it off the wall – it was no problemo.}

I’m glad {really glad} I put 2½” holes in the wall for blowing in insulation – the attachment on the blower was 2½” and the reducer {to 2”} caused a backup {I’d say install was easier on the stud-n-vapor-barrier-wall}.

Funny story.

We were using this stupid thing to poke the bale into the thresher. And the hook fell off into the thresher. Haha… hilarious, right? So we unplugged it and scooped out all the insulation into a box looking for the hook. I got down deep into the thresher poking around for it. Then I grabbed a flashlight and looked through the output tube. We searched for 30, 40 minutes. Couldn’t find it. Arrggh. So we gave up and started putting the insulation back in. Guess where the hook went? We’d scooped it up with the insulation without realizing it. It was never stuck inside the thresher mechanism {so that’s good I guess}.

Sound like it was hard, dirty, dusty work?

YUP. But I’d do it again.

I love the cellulose we used. No itchies {which is good because there was dust everywhere! Looked like we were hit with a blizzard made out of shredded newspaper}.

Unlike fiberglass, cellulose is very “green”, decomposable {so the stuff that ended up all over the ~~yard~~ neighborhood is OK}, and it also has great sound reduction properties {so they’ll forgive me the mess ‘cause they can’t hear my table saw anymore}.

Anyway, we spent the second half of the day “rocking” the room {but you’ll have to wait to hear about that because I need a long nap}.

Until the Shock Wears Off

Spent $1100 adding a 100 amp subpanel to our household electrical system this week… {not gonna DIY that one – ya know?}

Ouch.

But it sure is pretty yes?

And I also get 4 spots for adding circuits in the future, a spare circuit!, and a dedicated 20 amp line to the garage for my dust collector {whoo – hoo!}.

Still, I am not sure I can afford tic-tacs, much less any new power tools.

Getting ready for the big insulation blow-in tomorrow!!! Eeee! And I’ll let you know what we’re doing to get ready.

Turning The Garage Into A Workshop

Today went by sogoshdarnfast and I only just realized – I’ve been blogging for a year… today.

Building My Bookcase Doors; Which Style Should I Use?

Hey friends, I am hoping to start building the doors for my built-in bookcases {finally!}

but I am having some trouble deciding which style I like best…

Can you take a look and let me know what you like?

I am most partial to #1 and #3 to be honest…

and these doors will be very narrow – 9”x35” (right case), 12”x35” (left case)

installed in pairs on the bottom half of the bookcase.

Please excuse the bad drawing – in a rush you know…

P.S. Went to the doc yesterday {still sick!} and some cough syrup with codeine and amoxicillin is going to have me right as rain in no time ;) {I hope I hope I hope}

Why I No Longer Eat Mint Ice Cream

Ahh, the things we do for love, right?

Like mint ice cream, which my favorite sweetheart doesn’t like (he says it’s like brushing your teeth with dessert LOL), so I gave it up too.

A small price to pay when you love someone. For me he’s given up gluten. Yep, food made with wheat – like take-out pizza, Chinese, most pasta and bread – hamburger buns!

I am so lucky. My sweet hubs cooks all those things for us using gluten-free flour mixes. He is always making waffles, biscuits, pizza, bread, buns, pies, cakes and cookies. All gluten-free!

This is serious folks. Can you imagine?
Weekend mornings are always full of home-baked goodness covered in maple syrup. Weekdays are peppered with healthy gluten-free meals – I think we’re having pesto pizza tonite!

This stuff takes time to make, and Mr. Gorgeous does it without complaint, almost every. single. day.
A sign I made for my home says it perfectly!

It’s true that we would not eat so well if I was in charge of food. But my sweetie works – I don’t (right now). So why does he do it?

Because he’s the most wonderful man. He loves his family very much. And we love him too. Who needs mint ice cream?

My Family Command Center

What did I do before this? Oh wait… I have a picture.

Messy, no?

Here’s what it looks like now.

It’s simply a coupla boxes on the wall, a calendar, and a corkboard, hung over my DIY recycling center, but it has changed my life!

Here’s a quick run down of my returning home (with kiddos) after … let’s say… picking up Bamm-Bamm from preschool.

I have grabbed the mail on the way in and also have Bamm-Bamm lunch box. Bamm-Bamm strips off his jacket and shoes (and sometimes his pants and underwear) and Little Man looks for toys and/or cheerios to put in his mouth.

I head over to the ~~recycling~~ Family Command Center and drop off my keys, toss trash, wrappers from the lunchbox and junk mail, open the mail, post coupons, write down appointments, and place bills in the inbox –all before the kids get bored and start begging for (food, candy, TV, clean diaper, fill-in-the-blank).

Life is ~~good~~ better.

The mail bins were cheapo, quick coat of paint, thrift store transformations.

The board is an old calendar holder-thing that I flipped upside down and glued some corkboard to.

The calendar is just a piece of construction paper I drew a 5x7 grid on.

Over this I wedged a piece of acrylic (instant dry erase board), glass would have worked too. Add some pretty ribbon to hide the edge - viola.

Easy, peasy – so why didn’t I do it sooner?

The family is so much more “commanded” now ;)

Sometimes I think I just don’t know what I am missing.

This wall-o-organization only cost me $2 (hand-me-down frame, old corkboard and acrylic I had, $2 letter bins-thingy!!!). Oh, well, I guess I did spend $5 on some new dry erase markers ;)

I’ve received 2 (two!) Stylish Blogger Awards (thanks so much Vonda @ Newlyweds & The Old House and Katy @ Mom and Her Drill!!)

That means it’s time to share some stuff about myself and pass on the award to a “new crop” of stylish blogs.

I’m a little surprised to receive a “stylish” award since I’m usually NOT -stylish that is (yes my sister, who is stylish, is nodding and laughing right now).

I often have paint in my hair and sawdust on my clothes when I pick my son up from preschool (they never say a thing). Not stylish!
I check out mystery novels and woodworking books from the library.
I love working with all molding except crown against a ceiling (crown as a shelf is awesome though).
I’m a “low-tide food” lover… oysters, shellfish, mackerel, sardines, herring (not lutefisk, though, blech!)…
In college, I asked a cute guy to show me how to change my oil. Yeah I already knew how, but look how well that turned out – we’ve been married 7.5 years!
I used to be crazy, crawling on the ground, ~~afraid~~ terrified of heights. Now I’m just weak-kneed, hate standing on a chair, don’t make me look, afraid of heights.
Our last little guy was a surprise. We love him and wanted him as soon as we found out – but wow – surprise!
I’m not “always” happy, but I never ever forget how blessed I am.

DIY Meets CSI

I LOVE mysteries.

You know… whodunits, detective stories, crime novels… Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, Nancy Drew, the famous Sherlock Holmes, and now…

Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree, the intrepid DIYer and amateur sleuth in Sarah Graves’ Home Repair is Homicide mystery series.

They are the best kind of books if you love mysteries (with names like Trapdoor, Tool & Die, and Wicked Fix) and even more fun if you also love DIY home renovating.

Peppered throughout are useful home repair and renovating tips, hilarious reminders of how an 1823 federal-style house needs constant upkeep and repair, and a sense at the end that you should have somehow figured out who-dun-it and wouldn’t a paint sprayer be a good investment.

Sarah Graves’ novels have become my latest obsession, and I want to read them all!

Sarah, may I call you Sarah… if you don’t already have a fan club on my street, consider it done!!

When does that ever happen? Being done I mean (and the well done part too since I’m asking anyway).

Some nice weather (65 degrees, baby! Yes I am rubbing it in) allowed me to “finish” edging my front lawn…

(Yes, the grass was even growing out of the layer of dirt on the sidewalk in ~~some~~ many places.)

I have gained inches on the width of my walkways (and those inches look like I will be spending the weekend scrubbing them with bleach).

but now I feel like I should weed a ~~little~~ lot, mow the lawn, trim back the flowers (they are starting to take over), and buy some new plants to replace what didn’t survive the winter.

Flattening A Curved Chest

My hope chest has a curvy figure… I love it, but lamps fall off.

I needed to provide a stable surface for a lamp and reading materials

but the chest is a beautiful heirloom, and I really did not want to drill holes in it.

The super-easy solution is a pair of 1x2s painted black and screwed to a sheet of Plexiglas (drill holes slightly larger than the screws through the Plexiglas first).

DIY Tip: use a small propane torch (I have one for cooking) gently on the edges of the Plexiglas for a smooth glass-like finish.

The kids mess with it and it slides around, so I think I have a idea to fix that… coming soon!

There’s no reason not to use something you love (even if it takes a little adaptation), right?

Can I Take a Rain Check

I got a new toy today.

A Black&Decker lawn edger.

I’m not normally a B&D fan, but the price was right.

I can hear my neighbors cheering already (and thinking maybe now her front yard won’t look so decrepit!)

I got started right away - the sun was shining, and the baby (Little Man) was happily sitting in his high chair by the open front door watching me.

Perfect right? Ummm, I guess I forgot to knock on wood!!

After the first pass along only one side of the walkway, it began to drizzle (what happened to my sun!)

Next thing I know, I’m caught in a sudden torrential downpour at the same instant Little Man begins a screaming wail that threatens to strip paint.

I packed away the tools and glanced back out at the lawn which had that hopeful look that said Please don’t leave me like this!

So… I didn’t get to spend much time with my new toy,

Little Man is screaming, and

it took 5 minutes before I realized…

I had stepped in dog crap.

A Diaper for my Table Saw

From the sheer amount of time I spend with my table saw you would think it’s like my 3rd baby… and it’s as messy as one too.

This li’l stinker needed a diaper (you might call it a dust bag). Only $5.99 at Harbor Freight – my day is made!

Drilled holes into the stand…

And screwed in the snaps. Took me about 10 minutes total.

And now my much loved, used (and abused) table saw picks up after itself just a little better! (Wish my boys did too)…

I’m still in the market for a small dust collection system, but until I scrape together the dough for that, I’ll have a (slightly) cleaner garage!!!

DIY Book Nook for the Kids

I’m pleased with the new book nook in the playroom.

It was maybe the cheapest build I have ever done – most of the lumber was from MDF scraps left over after other projects.

At just 3.5 inches deep – it doesn’t use a lot of wood. A 3/4” spade bit cut the sides for the dowels.

The wall is a different kind of square at the top and bottom, so I used copious amounts of caulk at the edge to hide the gap.

My handy dandy Dremel MultiMax cut holes in the 1/8” hardboard back for the outlet and light switch. I used box extenders to “extend” the outlet and switch box to their new depth with the bookcase in place (see this post for more on box extenders).

I also used it to cut down the outlet cover so it would fit (a little sanding cleaned the edge right up). Don’t use your table saw for this – it will shatter the plastic (I learned that the hard way ;)

Now, the playroom is still messy – this doesn’t help the kids pick up their books (yet!), but they don’t dump them in a pile just ‘cause anymore.

For the uninitiated, the light switch can be a fun treasure hunt (but since the room has a skylight, it only matters at night).

Now I just need to build a little sofa or couch, and I can see sitting here reading to the boys “all day long” (as Bamm Bamm would say).

Challenge Organization: Week 1 - Kitchen

Thank you Laura @ Organizing Junkie and Maryann@ Domestically Speaking for giving me some incentive to clean and organize my house (my husband thanks you too).

This week’s challenge – the kitchen. I don’t do the cooking, but that doesn’t mean keeping a tidy kitchen isn’t my responsibility (he cooks – I clean – most women would agree it’s a fair trade).

So I dove in… and I’m not done by a long shot, but things are starting to get better!

1. I don’t have to do it all this week (I have 52 weeks to organize the whole house – so I’ll pace myself! ;)

This cabinet wasn’t terrible, but there was a little of everything – no overarching theme here (except messy).

2. To organize sometimes it gets messier before it gets tidier. So true – I’ve still got stuff all over my counters.

Now, I’ve got medicines in a basket at the top, flours in the middle, and oils/vinegars on the bottom.

3. Put like with like, and place it near where you use it. A drawer becomes dedicated to vitamins. Baskets for medicines and flours. I used to have these things scattered all over the kitchen!

And I learned something. I had some of these exceptional gluten-free flours from Norway – being saved for a special day. When I had gathered them together, I had more than I thought. I also realized that I was hoarding them! There’s no point in having something special if it never gets used because it is too special. I am going to use these flours – they aren’t doing me any good in the cupboard!

Oh my goodness I can NOT wait to see everyone’s organized kitchen projects!

52 Weeks

of Organizing starts here…

with the Recycling Center I built over the holidays!

Since we started using this, the change at our house has been amazing.

Junk mail used to pile up on the table. Empty milk cartons and yogurt cups sat on the counter until I got around to taking them outside. Aahhh!

Now, into the handsome cabinet bin they go, hidden until I take out the trash. Plenty of room for 13 gallons each of trash and recycling… this has been the perfect way to kick off Laura’s 52 Weeks of Organizing Challenge!

Now I’m working on week 2’s project (book storage for my kids’ playroom), and the other 50 weeks of organizing.

Doing a little every week (with the occasional big project), will help keep me from becoming overwhelmed. This year I’m getting organized!
