Although this site primarily focuses on the Barclays English Premier League, we occasionally look at other football topics as well. With the South Africa World Cup coming up next year, and with our sister site being Vuvezela SA 2010, we’ve decided to look at how to go about purchasing tickets. South Africa looks set to become a hot destination quite soon, so, in future articles, we will also be looking at South Africa accommodation, news South Africa, various cities around the country like south Cape Town, Johannesburg Africa, Durban, and a whole lot more…

A lot has been said about the recent process for the South Africa 2010 soccer world cup tickets that was implemented a few days ago. From a user perspective it seems pretty unfriendly, so we’ve taken the liberty of doing some research and applying for a few tickets online.

Here then is a detailed process, along with screenshots to assist you in applying for football tickets for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in SA:

1 - Navigate to the following location at FIFA.com and register or login:
South Africa 2010 World Cup Tickets

The Welcome screen allows you to select your country of residence:

2 - The second screen lets you choose what ticket options you can apply for. You also need to accept the terms and conditions for the Ticket Application Form on this page.

3 - Screen 3 lets you choose your match requests. You need to select the venue, match, seat category, and ticket quantity. There are 4 seat categories, varying from most expensive at 1 to least expensive at 4. Only South African residents can apply for category 4 tickets.

You can apply for a maximum of 4 tickets per match, for up to 7 matches. Note that it is not possible to select tickets for multiple matches that are being played on the same day.

4 - After you’ve selected the tickets for the matches that you would like to attend, the next screen displays a summary of your current ticket requests:

5 - On the next screen you, as the applicant, need to enter your personal details. Note, as the ticket applicant, you must attend each match you have requested tickets for.

6 - The guest details fields are on the same screen as the applicant details (5), and you will need to enter the personal details of any guests that you have requested tickets for.

7 - The following screen allows you to review your requests. This is a final check before payment details are taken. Check your details carefully before continuing. On this page you may also select the option to accept a lower category. By doing this you consent to the possibility of being allocated a lower category if the requested category is not available.

8 - The following screen allows you to enter your payment details. You may register to pay with either Visa or Mastercard. The registered payment card details must belong to the main applicant.

Note that all tickets purchased by the general public will be made available for collection in South Africa. Payment will only be processed if your application is successful. This means that your credit card will not be debited after completing this application, but only once your application has been confirmed as successful.

9 - The next screen allows you to confirm your ticket application for 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, and submit your request. It is recommended that you check the summary carefully and print the page prior to submission, in order to retain a hard copy for your records.

10 - You are now allocated a Ticket Application Identification number. This number must be quoted when contacting the 2010 FIFA World Cup Ticketing Centre (FWCTC) with any queries. Shortly after this, you will receive a notification email confirming receipt of your application. Note that completion and submission of the Ticket Application Form does not guarantee the availability of tickets.

All successful applicants will be notified of their success via email within 3 to 5 days after the draw.

You have the ability to view the status of your application at any time within your customer account.

Conclusion: All-in-all, we found this quite a painless process, and credit needs to go to FIFA for this. Where things will get interesting though, will be after the actual draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup is made, and the time comes for World Cup tickets to be allocated.

Here’s wishing Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, and the rest of the cities in South Africa a successful football World Cup in 2010!

It’s been a long while since we’ve updated this site, due to various other going-ons, but the recent glut of games in the Premiership and subsequently, fantasy leagues, have got us thinking and reminded us of a few key principles to keep in mind during this busy time. These hold true especially when your team is not doing particularly well and you are thinking of re-jigging things dramatically…

1) DO NOT make 2 transfers in a gameweek, no matter what the situation. To us it’s just giving 4 points away unnecessarily. We’d rather take the risk of a player not playing than take a 4 point hit, because you are essentially hoping that the new players scores 6 points just to break even.

2) Try to keep short-term solutions to a minimum. Here’s an example. In the last couple of weeks I’ve brought in John O’Shea (Man Utd) and Alex (Chelsea) for short-term points spikes. Bringing in O’Shea was a short-term solution to pick up 2 quick clean sheets, and it seems to have worked reasonably well. I was planning on bringing in either Skrtel or Carvalho as soon as they came back, so enough cash was kept aside. Bringing in Alex however, didn’t work well at all, because he was injured within half an hour of Chelsea’s game against Fulham and may be out for an extended period. This means that he will have to be transferred back out after one gameweek, essentially making it a wasted transfer without picking up any real points. This may be the last time that I attempt such short-term (cheap) solutions.

3) This fantasy league game is a lot like the stock market… you can’t time all the ups perfectly, but you’ll do a whole lot better by staying with quality stocks (players) than those who are chasing the next big thing all the time.

4) Start getting a reliable bench in place a week at a time, so that you know u can rely on it when times are tough for yout team.

5) Once you’ve done all that, let that team have an extended run and try and not make too many changes to your core players (approx. 9 or 10 of your starting XI should be your core).

We’ll be back later in the week with a few more tips and some previews. Till next time, cheers.

Another full round of games in the Premier League, and fantasy league owners out there will be starting to make their last-minute changes this morning. Because we’re such nice folk, we’ll give you some help in picking 11 players who may bring you loads of points this weekend…

Goalkeeper - Reina (Liverpool)
Assured of his place in the Liverpool side every week, their game against Fulham should give you a good chance of getting off to a great start to the gameweek with a clean sheet.

Defender - Arbeloa (Liverpool)
Back from suspension, he is a lock at right-back at the moment, and should also pick you up a clean sheet, which is like free points.

Defender - Terry (Chelsea)
Scored in midweek for England, and he always looks good for a goal at set-pieces for Chelsea. The leaky Newcastle defence come to the Bridge this week, so he might well get you a goal and a clean sheet.

Defender - Turner (Hull)
A relatively cheap option in defence, and with Portsmouth struggling to score goals of late, he might be in with a shout of a clean sheet here, even away from home. Worth the gamble if you’re short of cash.

Midfielder - Lampard
Mr Reliable should be licking his lips at the thought of getting a few shots in against that Newcastle defence. Missed out last week, but doesn’t usually disappoint two weeks in a row.

Midfielder - Kuyt (Liverpool)
Starting to become almost a must-have in the game, with his now seemingly regular goals from the right side of midfield. The way Liverpool play allows him to get forward very often, and he must be worth a thought against Fulham.

Midfielder - Ireland (Man City)
Back to goalscoring form last week after a lean spell, he is a good mid-priced option in midfield against an Arsenal defence which is not the strongest. Jump on the bandwagon with this one, because he tends to score in bursts.

Midfielder - Nasri (Arsenal)
Same game, and there ought to be quite a few goals in it, so Nasri features quite highly now that Fabregas seems to be playing a bit deeper this season. Quality player who will get his fair share of goals and assists this season.

Forward - Torres (Liverpool)
Even though he may still be short of match fitness, look for Rafa to start him against Fulham and he should get his name on the scoresheet.

Forward - Zaki (Wigan)
Something tells me that Zaki is due a couple of goals if he gets the nod this weekend. He’s gone off the boil a bit recently, and the injuries haven’t helped, but if he gets to start against Everton, you can see him getting on the scoresheet, maybe more than once.

Forward - Saha (Everton)
Just starting to show signs of his quality at Everton, and if he can stay fit he will be a real threat to defences in games to come. Also has the potential to score more than once in games like this against Wigan, so if you’re a betting man then check this option out.

So there you have it… have a look at players in the positions you are looking to make transfers and take the jump. And then give us a shout next week once our picks have make you loads of points! Till next time, cheers.

That being said, the average score was just below 60, so there must have been a few disappointed fantasy football players out there. Here’s how my team did this last gameweek…

Goalkeeper - Van der Sar - 6 points
No surprise as United kept a clean sheet against Stoke.

Defender - Bosingwa - 13 points
Another huge week for the top defender in the game, capped by a great goal and a couple of bonus points.

Defender - Laursen - 12 points
People were starting to get rid of Laursen, but a 12-point haul will see a lot of them buying him back again.

Defender - Garrido - 4 points
Got an assist, but his long-term value doesn’t look all that great. Will probably transfer him out for Agger this week.

Midfielder - Ronaldo (captain) - 36 points
Nobody can expect to do well without him in this game.

Midfielder - D. Bentley - 5 points
Transferred in for Ashley Young last week in order to free up some funds, he had a reasonable first week in my team.

Midfielder - Lampard - 3 points
A rare off-week for Mr Consistency, he’ll come right soon enough.

Midfielder - Geovanni - 10 points
Another goal for Hull’s magician, must be among the best-value players in the game.

Midfielder - Valencia - 2 points
He’s not looking very good value right now with the amount of good fantasy league players in his price bracket.

Forward - Defoe - 4 points
Short of goals at the moment, but his bonus points are keeping him in my side. Might be due a big week soon.

Forward - Bendtner - 2 points
Another player on the borderline, I might give him another week or two to prove that he can score points.

My best week so far this season with 97 points, but I’m sure it was the same for the majority of fantasy league managers out there. I’ve now moved to 763 points and am sitting just outside the top 2000 players in the game, and inside the top 25 of all South African fantasy league players.

I’ll have some tips for this gameweek later on in the week, so pop back in to check it out. And feel free to drop me a line to let me know how all your teams out there are doing!

During the next few weeks we will be reviewing various sports betting websites out there, and helping you choose which ones are best suited for you to make some money off. We will be using some real cash to place different types of bets on various betting websites. Then we’ll present you with our findings. Today, we review the behemoth of all sports betting sites, bwin…

Sports betting has become a multi-billion dollar industry around the world, allowing some people to make huge amounts of money with their knowledge of sports.
We’ll be looking at a few of these betting sites, and reviewing, amongst others:

Range of sports

Registration and payment types

Range of bet types

Ease of use

What we won’t be looking at right now is the online casino arena, because that deserves just as much time as the sports betting industry. So we’ll go into those in a future article, after we’ve covered the various sports betting sites.

bwin

This is the largest online sports betting site in Europe with over 8000 bets placed daily, and it also includes poker, casino, and games sections. You have the option of betting on over 80 different types of sports, and you are able to bet on the most obscure sports as well as the more popular ones, like football and tennis.

This is bwin’s own description of their site:

“bwin is big time sports, real action and more. We do not just talk about fun and excitement, we actually make it happen. What’s more: you create the excitement with us. No matter whether you’re a pro or beginner – everyone can join in.

“We provide Europe’s biggest betting line-up of sports bets and are the Number 1 online. How about some numbers? We offer up to 9,000 bets daily with betting action in more than 90 sports – that’s a record, too. Here’s another number: The entire line-up is available in 20 different languages. And we promise there are more to come.”

Range of sports

“The huge football betting line-up, which includes well over 500 leagues – from Premiership to Serie A, from World Cup to Copa do Brazil –, is only the tip of the iceberg. Every day bwin bookmakers provide attractive odds on all the most popular sports like tennis, formula 1, basketball, ice hockey, golf, rugby and boxing. Are you looking for something more exotic? Then back your favourites in Futsal, lacrosse or chess – there’s bets on more than 90 sports to choose from!”

“In addition to the numerous sports on offer, the wide range of specials is another trademark of bwin. Special bets on almost every event – whether it’s football, tennis or motoracing – ensure extra thrill and excitement. Some examples: Who will score the first goal in the match between Chelsea and Liverpool? How many games will Henman win against Federer at Wimbledon? And will Capirossi complete the Italian MotoGP?”

“Enjoy gripping entertainment online: thrilling sports bets with a unique L!VE feeling – get closer to the action than ever before. And then there’s the casino atmosphere at its finest; live poker and numerous games for that short break in-between. Join bwin to get away from your daily routine and enter a world full of emotions.”

I don’t think you need any more of a description than that!

Registration and payment types

The bwin site is very, very easy to use, even for someone using it for the first time. The first thing you obviously have to do, as with all betting sites, is register your details with them. Once you have done that, you choose your payment type from the following list:

VISA/VISA Electron

Mastercard

Diners Club

NETeller

Moneybookers

Bank transfer

FreeBet card

Western Union Quick Pay

As a reputable company, bwin’s online transactions are as secure as can be. Now all you have to do is make your first deposit of the amount of your choice, and you’re good to go. The minimum deposit amount is 10 US dollars (just convert it to whatever your currency is), except for users with a FreeBet card, for which the minimum deposit is 1 US dollar. Maximum deposts range from 1000 to 5000 US Dollars for the various payment types. For any transactions using the credit card types (VISA/VISA Electron, Mastercard, Diners Club), you will pay a 2% fee.

Simple as that - you are now ready to place a bet on whatever sport, poker, or casino game you wish!

Range of bet types

There is such a range of different bets available that it would probably take multiple pages to review them all. We’ve found that the best way to view all the different types of bets is to actually register on the site yourself and have a look through what is on offer. You can place bets on multiple games at the same time and minimize your risk of losses, while you can also increase the odds of your bets by combining system bets, which is a great feature if you are good at predicting multiple results.

Another great feature is the Live Betting section where you are able to bet on matches while they are in progress. There is such a range of betting available here too, especially for the football games, including first person to score, amount of injury time to be played, how and when the goals will be scored, and too many more to mention here. We’ve found that the Live Betting section is a great way to pick up reasonably high odds on certain bets.

Bwin usually have various special deals going on, and there is quite often an opportunity to pick up some sort of freebie, especially when you’re a new user.

Ease of use

We definitely recommend bwin because of how easy it is to use and especially because of the security and reliability of the company. A real pleasure to play on when you have some spare cash laying around!

The betting calculator on each page is a very handy tool and allows you to play around with certain permutations while deciding on your final bet to be placed. It just adds to the user-friendliness of the site. Use the one below to play around with and see how simple it is!

Register for free now – and start betting right away!
Important: Betting at bwin is easy for newcomers. Not only do the demos on L!VE betting and how to place your first bet explain exactly how everything works, at www.bwin.com there’s also an extensive help menu and a friendly support team to answer any questions you may have.

What you waiting for? Register now for free and secure your ticket to 24 hours of non-stop action at bwin!
Register now!

Remember, gambling should be treated as a hobby, not the be-all and end-all. So please, play responsibly.

Fit again, and at 6.1m he’s a bargain, and he also fits in the same sort of price bracket as Ireland and Valencia. So if you’re looking for something different from the rest of your personal league, then he’s a good option for you.

We thought we’d give the obsessive lot among you some last minute fantasy league transfer picks to mull over. It’s almost time to get your teams in for gameweek 11, so hurry up! Here are a few interesting picks for this week…

Kranjcar (Portsmouth)
Fit again, and at 6.1m he’s a bargain, and he also fits in the same sort of price bracket as Ireland and Valencia. So if you’re looking for something different from the rest of your personal league, then he’s a good option for you.

Bendtner (Arsenal)
With both Adebayor and Van Persie out for this week, Bendtner looks like one of Arsenal’s only striking options. They are playing Manchester United, so there might not be a lot of goals in this one, but you’ll be kicking yourself if you missed out on him at 5.3m.

Milner (Aston Villa)
He’s starting to get more game time and looks good at 5.9m. You know you are going to get quite a few assists from Milner, so he’s a good option to have as a 4th or 5th midfielder.

Malouda (Chelsea)
In very good points-scoring form of late, he has the advantage of being cheaper than Wright-Phillips, Arteta, Young, and the like. Chelsea are scoring a lot of goals at the moment, and Malouda is involved in his fair share.

Cahill (Everton)
Same as Malouda, he’s cheaper than the rest of the 8.0m and up club, and you can guarantee he’ll score his fair share over the coming weeks.

A. Johnson (Fulham)
Just a hint that AJ is starting to get back to his old goalscoring ways, so might just be worth a pop at 6.8m.

Bentley & Bent (Spurs)
A decent run of fixtures coming up for Spurs, and they seem to be hitting some goalscoring form at last. Thes are the two players we would pick out of that team to be involved in most of their attacking plays. Decently priced as well, due to Spurs’ shocking start.

Martins (Newcastle)
The strong Nigerian bagged a double in his last game and looks a good bet to continue scoring in the long term, now that the Toon seem to be a bit more settled.

Miller (West Brom)
A bit of a wild card for this week because they are playing at Anfield, but Miller has looked a real threat in recent games for West Brom and at 4.9m, he will definitely fit the part if you are looking for a cheap 3rd striker option.

It’s been a pretty good gameweek 10 for me in the Official Fantasy Premier League game, but could have been even better had I not left Geovanni on the bench. These things happen though, and I believe they even out over the course of the fantasy league season. Let’s start at the back as usual, with the goalkeeper…

Goalkeeper - Van der Sar - 2 points
A bit of a freakish occurence in that Man Utd conceded three goals, so I don’t expect it to happen too often in future.

Defender - Bosingwa - 6 points
Another clean sheet for Chelsea, which is by now a regular occurence. Can’t go wrong with Bosigwa at the moment.

Defender - Laursen - 1 points
Poor result from Villa, but Laursen is a fantasy league points-magnet, so he stays in the side.

Defender - Paintsil - 2 points
Denied a clean sheet right at the end, but such is the Premier League.

Midfielder - Valencia - 2 points
Tough choice to keep Valencia right now because there are a couple of offerings in midfield which could provide better value.

Midfielder - Ronaldo (captain) - 30 points
Another huge gameweek from Ronaldo, and he is now starting to become a must-have in this game.

Midfielder - A. Young - 2 points
Didn’t really get into the game against Newcastle, so an unusually quiet gameweek for Young.

Midfielder - Lampard - 9 points
Mr Consistency once again comes to the party. EVERY fantasy football team out there that has ambitions to do well should have him in their side.

Forward - Zamora - 2 points
I’ve run out of patience with Zamora and will be dropping him in the next gameweek or two. And then he’ll probably go on a scoring spree…

Forward - Defoe - 2 points
Again played well at the weekend, and to me it’s just a matter of time before he starts scoring goals again.

Forward - Zaki - 7 points
A goal to break his short “dry spell”, so he’ll have re-assured a lot of fantasy league managers out there who were thinking of dropping him.

So a decent week, and it seems the plan is working to select my team to pick up a minimum of 50 points every gameweek. I’ve picked up 65 points to take my tally to 627 thus far.

I’ll have some more tips for this gameweek later on in the week, so pop back in to check it out. Might be time for all those people out there who haven’t gotten around to selecting Ronaldo for their fantasy league teams to start getting him in.
