The ideal bathroom countertop is affordable, functional and durable. But it should also be beautiful, adding aesthetic appeal to the bathroom for years to come. Fortunately, that last criteria is the easiest to fulfill. In fact, no matter your price point, you can find countertops that will add beauty to this hard-working room.

To help you out, I’ve gathered my top five picks for countertops that, with the right care, will still look amazing down the road. While countertop prices generally range from $10 to $100+ per square foot, installed, they can vary from state to state and from installation to installation. You’ll want to be sure to get detailed cost information from your bathroom contractor.

Here are five countertop materials to get you started.

1. Laminate

The most affordable option for countertops, laminate is formed by bonding paper and melamine resin. At prices starting at $8 per square foot, post-formed laminate is the least expensive. These ready-made counters, however, offer few custom options. High-pressure laminate is available starting at $10 per square foot, and comes in a broad array of colors and styles. If done well, some offer the look of natural stone. While laminate is extremely durable, it is costly to repair.

2. Ceramic Tile

With prices starting at under $25 per square foot, ceramic tiles offer waterproof bathroom countertops at an affordable price. Glazed tiles are non-porous and durable, and are available in a wide range of colors, patterns and textures. A major drawback are the grout lines that divide them. Grout needs frequent attention to keep it looking fresh. Gray grout, however, is growing in popularity. Gray grout not only needs less maintenance, but adds a subtle, decorative touch to tile countertops.

3. Fiber Cement

For both the look and the feel of stone at a reasonable price, fiber cement countertops are a good option. Prices start at $30 per square foot. The material resembles slate, but is far more versatile, as it can be ordered and cut into just about any shape imaginable. Colors are limited, however. Fiber cement usually comes in red, green, light gray and dark gray. Fiber cement’s main drawback for bathroom countertops is that it is porous and must be resealed every few months.

4. Solid Surfacing

Made from polyester or cast-acrylic, solid surfacing prices start at $45 per square foot. These hardened plastics are extremely durable and entirely non-porous. The easy-care material can be cut to any specification. Manufacturers continually release new patterns and colors, including several new ones that resemble quartz, mica or glass.

5. Stone

Stone is considered the most luxurious material for countertops, both for its elegant look and for its price. The most durable stones are often the most expensive. For sheer beauty, it’s hard to match the look of marble. A fine Italian marble starts at about $100 per square foot. Many stones, but not all, can be polished or honed. Most stone materials require periodic sealing.

Around the world, there are toilets that have been transformed from a basic bowl and water tank into something worth checking out. If you’ve been jaded by the toilet in your own home, take a peek at these interesting alternatives.

This bizarre-looking skull toilet is found in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where you don’t flush paper down the toilet due to bad pipes. Instead, the toilet paper is dropped into a wastebasket . . . in this case, the missing molar at the back there. Toilets with teeth never seem to be a great idea, even when they’re non-biting ones like this.

Even if the majority of us disagree with many celebrities’ extreme plastic surgery choices, few, if any, could believe that Jocelyn Wildenstein’s botched face was done by design. Jim Davis

Jim Davis’s Army career began with him breaking both of his legs during basic training. He recovered and conquered that mishap, but then two injuries to his back ended his service time and put him on the VA’s partial disability list. His back pain escalated throughout the years, and in 2002, he took a nasty fall in his garage that tore his bicep tendon from his left elbow and damaged his hand’s nerves.

As a person who has just discovered online stores after being loyal to Lowes for over ten years, this battle between two different ways to do business was definitely inevitable. I like that Lowes has a service desk with customer service reps available in the case you have questions about your order. What I don’t like, however, is the fact that because they are a commercial company with many stores throughout the country, they are always busy. At least this seems to be the only reason I can explain their rude service. When I asked a simple question about the quality of the Lowes vanities, the man I spoke to gave me quite an attitude. People have said that I am naïve. As a young person, I just think that I have a lot of faith in the world. I think that we can save the environment by doing our part. I have a serious problem. I am what they call a “pack rat”. That means that I may end up on the news one day with the headline “Young Woman Found Stuck In Home With Too Much Stuff”. I wouldn’t be able to escape past the doors of my house because I’d simply have too many iof my beloved possessions trapping me in. I am the first to admit it: I am a compulsive hoarder.

I recognize that it’s not natural to have 1,646 different kinds of tea pots. Or that I keep all the airline napkins that I have ever gotten. It’s an issue I’m trying to deal with. In the meantime, I just need a more reasonable storage solution. My bathroom was moderately sized when I moved into my house but now it’s been almost completely eclipsed by various towels, mouthwash bottles, razors, and empty shampoo bottles.

I decided that I need larger bathroom cabinets to accommodate all of my things. I can shuffle a large chunk of the less valuable items underneath the sink and into the spacious bathroom cabinets. As a self-professed nostalgia hunter, I like to find antiques that were popular during certain historical periods. In fact, my home is a Victorian-era home built somewhere around the turn of the 20^th century. The aspect I love most about my home is that much of the original flair remains. The marble fireplace, the beautiful crown molding, elaborate pediments over the doors–all of it stands as it would when it was first built. I didn’t want to reproduce the look so much as I wanted to preserve it. There are many ways to actually achieve this. The most important one is by buying time-appropriate furniture.

Lately, I have discovered that purchasing antique fixtures is increasingly difficult. Since my husband got laid off from his job, we don’t have much expendable income. Unfortunately, this also means I have less of an incentive to buy the $3,000 authentic antique bathroom vanities that my heart beats so ardently for.

Reluctantly, I decided that perhaps I should cut back on my spending. The other day, as I was surfing the Internet, I stumbled upon a site called “Premiere Vanities”. I know, I know. “Them’s fightin’ words!” I do have a good reason that I will explain to you in the proceeding entry.

You see, I used to be a Home Depot junkie too. I mean, practically everything in my home had the “Home Depot” logo on it. The reason I really frequented this place so much was because it’s only about ten miles from my home. I know that convenience shouldn’t be the motive to spend thousands of dollars but as a busy father, I simply don’t have time to stray from well-established habits. Eventually, I learned that Home Depot wasn’t as infallible as I had thought. It all started when I purchased a couple wooden single bathroom vanities.

The wood bathroom vanity that I bought was fine when I bought it. About two months into it, the cabinet doors came apart. Two months! I fixed it and moved on. No big deal. Then later, I heard from a friend who worked at Home Depot that their wood products come from old growth forests. I am by no means a “tree hugger” but I do feel that we should all do our part to be eco-conscious. The fact the wood on my vanity was obtained from a primary forest made me blow my top. I knew that this once symbiotic relationship between me and Home Depot was officially over.

Soon after, I went online and decided to find a vanity that way. Even if it would take some time to arrive at my door, I knew I did not want to physically enter a hardware store for awhile. The wound was too fresh. There was no way I was going to resort to having vanities Home Depot style.
