A soda can can serve multiple purposes, including functioning as a makeshift fishing lure. Cut out a piece of the soda can to resemble the shape of a fish and attach a fishing hook to it. Attach the soda can lure to your fishing line, cast it into the water, and slowly reel it in to attract fish. The glimmering reflections off the soda can mimic the movement of real fish and increase your chances of catching something.

Building a Bamboo Trap for Small Game

Bamboo is a versatile material that can be used to construct a small game trap. Cut a section of bamboo and create an opening on one end. Place bait inside the bamboo, such as berries or nuts, and prop it up with a stick. When an animal enters the trap to reach the bait, the bamboo will tip over, trapping the animal inside.

Cooking with an Altoids Tin

An Altoids tin can be transformed into a compact and portable cooking stove. Fill the tin with char cloth or other flammable materials and ignite it. Place a small pot or container on top of the tin, creating a stable surface for cooking. This makeshift stove can be used to boil water or cook small meals, providing nourishment in survival situations.

A larger tin can can be used to create a more substantial backpacking stove. Cut out the bottom of the can, leaving about an inch of material intact for stability. Poke holes around the upper side of the can to allow air to reach the flame. Fill the can with fuel, such as denatured alcohol, and ignite it. The cord’s durable nylon sheath will perform in high tension wear and tear situations, even in harsh climates. Not only can you use the paracord as an extremely strong rope, but you can also take the strands out and use them for fishing, sewing, dental floss, nets, traps the possibilities are absolutely endless. Be careful though, some brands of paracord are poorly manufactured and can be missing strands making the rope weaker. Sometimes it can be made out of poor materials all together. I have had very good luck with SGT Knots products and plan to keep buying from them. Paracord is a wonderful addition to your survival pack.

Small Folding Knife

A small knife for smaller tasks is needed. Sometimes you don’t want to pull out your massive Ka-Bar to do a small job (even though we all love our Ka-Bar’s). This knife is made from CPM-S30V stainless steel and has a back lock for safety (back locks are MUCH safer in my opinion than side locks which sometimes malfunction and don’t hold). I will choose Spyderco over Ka-Bar folding knifes any day. They both have their place and Spyderco holds it’s own with folding knives.

Knife Sharpener

This knife sharpener is a great tactical and compact solution for sharpening your survival knives. The sharpener is made out of Diamond/Carbide. If you are chopping, skinning, or carving it will be extremely hard to with with a dull knife!

Binoculars

These may not be quite as necessary as some other items listed here, however they definitely would be missed if they were not included in the bugout bag. Binoculars can be a wonderful protection tool. It is always nice to see what you may be walking into before you are already there. These binoculars are 100% waterproof and have a 12x magnification. It is hard to come by good waterproof binoculars, these are also a compact size to fit in your bag.

Rain Gear

Staying warm and dry is crucial to survival. When the rain comes and you absolutely have to go out in it or have not prepared a shelter a poncho will be well worth having. This poncho is a one size fits all and has a fully tapped paratex dry shell. It also is designed to cover personal equipment and backpack, keeping your gear dry is very important as everything may not be 100% waterproof. Can be used as an emergency bivvi by design. For staying dry this Snugpak poncho is a great solution.

Extra Clothes

Extra clothes are very important for a survivalist. Try to find clothes made with good wicking material (synthetic fibers such as teflon or polyester) to help keep moisture out. Also keep them in a dry waterproof bag inside of your BOB in case your BOB gets wet unintentionally.

Water Filter

Clean water is ABSOLUTELY essential. Yes you may have some water saved up, but when you run out you will want a quick and easy way to get clean fresh water from any source. Waterproof Tarp

A durable waterproof tarp is very important to have. Possibly one of the most important. You can use waterproof tarps for building a shelter, catching dew / rain water, an extra blanket as well as many other things. It would not hurt to get a couple extra here, in being a survivalist you never know what kind of situation you could end up in.

Basic First Aid Kit

This basic 200 piece Coleman First Aid Kit is a great kit to start out with. If you want to add a few extra items I would include a good treatment for snakebites as well as a Basic Bleeding Control Pack down the road. You don’t want to get a terrible wound or a snake bite and not have a remedy close by. Trust me.

Food MRE’s

food is very important. This kit includes 12 meals and each meal includes a flame-less heater. Each meal is approximately 1250 calories. MRE’s do last quite a few years, but always check the expiration date to ensure that when you need them they will be ready to eat. Water is also very important in survival instances. These little pouches are great to throw in your bag and will keep for 5 years. The 29 piece ultralight survival kit comes with a small survival guide, but nothing like this one. This one will cover you in absolutely any situation and climate you come across. This has some extra tips on preparedness, how to make a camp, where to find food, what to eat, what not to eat, first aid, and disaster survival. If there is one book you want with you in harsh times, this one is much better than just a good read. It might save your life or someone elses.

In this post I am  going to  be looking at what I think is the best survival kit for hiking, for instance if you find yourself stuck in the mountains because someone has twisted their ankle while hiking. So in addition to a first aid kit you should also be carrying a survival  kit.

In this article we will look at how you can quickly treat a fracture. The goal here is to protect your limb. Ultimately, you must get to a hospital and get it treated. X-rays will need to be done to determine the fracture and place a cast.

first aid techniques shown here are to be used to immobilize the affected limb so that pain is minimized, and any internal bone damage is not exacerbated. 

What Are The Symptoms Of A Fracture

The first thing that you should be able to do is to recognize the signs and symptoms of a fracture. The most obvious type of fracture is the open fracture. This is where the broken bone has pierced the skin and is now protruding out of the limb. 

If the patient heard or felt his/her bones crack or they can feel like bone rubbing against bone internally during impact, there might be a fracture. Other signs are swelling, a tingling feeling and numbness in the area. There may be other wounds close to the affected area as well. The pain of a fracture will worsens over time. This is one of the surest signs of a fracture. 

How To Treat Arm Fractures

Contrary to popular belief, not all arm fractures require you to place the arm in a sling. If the fracture is close to the elbow and the bone breaks in a way where bending the arm at the elbow causes more pain, you should avoid a sling. Instead, place a towel between the arm and midsection of your body so that there is no gap between the arm and the body. You may use a belt or two bandages to tie around the arm and midsection. In this way, the arm will be immobilized and close to the body supported by the towel.

If it is a simple fracture, you can use a triangular bandage to form a sling for the fractured arm and tie the ends behind the patients neck. Once again, you can tie a second bandage around the arm and your chest to immobilize the arm further. The aim here is to provide support and prevent excessive movement of the injured limb.

How To Treat A Leg Fracture

Leg fractures are slightly more complicated. For a lower leg fracture, it is best to ask the person to lie flat and feel the patients affected foot to see if they can sense your touch. 

Roll up a towel and place it between both legs. Now tie a bandage around the ankles with the towel sandwiched between. Tie a second bandage around both legs just below the knee. This will immobilize the legs and prevent the fractured limb from moving about.

In the event that there is an open fracture and the bone is protruding through the skin, the first step is to stop the bleeding. Apply pressure on the sides of the bone and skin to stop the bleeding. Do not apply pressure on top of the bone and try to push it back in.

Once the bleeding stops, roll up some towels or padding and place them around the affected bone. In this way, you are protecting the injured area with cushioning material. Roll up a towel and place it along the outer side of the leg. Place a wooden splint next to the towel and tie it all together with one bandage around the ankle and one around the thigh.

Now you have immobilized the limb. Using splints is required if medical help is out of reach. The splint on one leg will allow the victim to still move with a makeshift crutch till he/she gets to a place where they can call for help.
