The Importance of Shelter in Survival

Survival hinges on the necessity of shelter, which provides essential protection against the elements. Effective shelter building is imperative in any survival scenario. Without proper protection, you risk life-threatening issues like hypothermia or heat exhaustion within hours.

Historically, humans have constructed various types of shelters using natural materials, showcasing our adaptability. A well-built shelter not only retains heat but also serves as a barrier against wind, rain, and snow, ensuring your body temperature remains stable.

Additionally, it provides safety from wildlife and insects, which can pose health risks. Understanding shelter construction principles is essential for your survival preparedness, as it forms one of the four critical needs alongside fire, water, and food.

Stay safe and resourceful!

Selecting the Right Location

Building a sturdy shelter is only effective if you start with the right location. Look for an elevated, dry spot to avoid flooding, steering clear of low ground or water sources.

Natural windbreaks, like hills or dense vegetation, can shield your shelter from harsh winds. Position your shelter to capture maximum sunlight during the day, which is vital for warmth, especially in cooler seasons.

Natural windbreaks and sunlight are crucial for shelter placement, ensuring warmth and protection from harsh elements.

Take a moment to assess the area for hazards, such as falling branches and wildlife trails, to guarantee safety.

Finally, evaluate the availability of natural resources—fallen logs, branches, and foliage are essential for building a shelter with natural materials and providing insulation.

Choosing wisely now sets the foundation for a secure and comfortable refuge.

Tools and Materials Needed

Creating a sturdy shelter requires a few essential tools and materials to guarantee your structure is both functional and durable. Start with a fixed-blade camping knife and a folding saw for cutting branches. Work gloves are vital to protect your hands while gathering materials.

You’ll need long, straight branches for the ridgepole and vertical supports, along with thinner poles for the frame and roof. Leafy foliage or bracken provides insulation and rain protection, while soft debris like leaves and grass makes comfortable bedding.

Remember to prioritize fallen branches and natural resources to minimize your environmental impact. Using existing trees as support can enhance stability and reduce the need for digging, making your shelter-building experience more efficient and enjoyable.

Building a Lean-To Shelter

When you’re ready to set up a shelter, a lean-to design offers a simple yet effective solution for protection against the elements.

To build a shelter, start by finding two sturdy trees spaced 6 to 10 feet apart. Use a long, straight branch as a ridge pole, securing it across the trees at shoulder height.

Locate two sturdy trees 6 to 10 feet apart, then secure a long branch across as your ridge pole.

Next, angle thinner branches at a 45-degree angle from the ridge pole to the ground, ensuring water runoff. Lash horizontal spars between the vertical supports for stability and weave in additional branches for rigidity.

For added insulation, layer spruce boughs from the top of the roof down, minimizing gaps to keep you warm and dry. Your lean-to will be a cozy refuge in nature.

Advanced Shelter Techniques: The Debris Hut

As you explore advanced shelter techniques, the debris hut stands out for its exceptional insulation and simplicity.

Start by selecting a location with natural protection. Construct an A-frame using two long poles for support and a ridge pole for stability. Lean smaller branches against the ridge pole to create walls.

For ideal insulation, cover the roof with at least a foot of leaves, grass, or bracken, ensuring it traps your body heat effectively. To enhance comfort, fill your sleeping area with soft organic materials, distancing yourself from the cold ground.

Finally, create a makeshift door with fallen branches or packs, allowing easy access while keeping the warmth inside. This shelter not only protects you but fosters a sense of belonging to nature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Essential Advanced First Aid Skills for Survivalists

As a survivalist, being prepared for any situation is crucial. While basic first aid skills are important, it is equally important to go beyond the basics and delve into advanced first aid techniques. In this article, we will explore some essential advanced first aid skills that every survivalist should master. From assessment and triage to bone fracture management and CPR, these skills can potentially mean the difference between life and death in a survival situation.

Assessment and Triage

Scene Assessment

When faced with a medical emergency, the first step is to properly assess the scene. This includes evaluating the safety of the environment and identifying any potential hazards. By ensuring the safety of yourself and others, you can effectively provide care without putting yourself in harm’s way.

Primary Survey

Once the scene is deemed safe, it is crucial to perform a primary survey on the patient. This involves quickly assessing the patient’s vital signs, such as their responsiveness, airway, breathing, and circulation. Identifying any life-threatening conditions is essential in prioritizing the care given.

Secondary Survey

After completing the primary survey, a more detailed examination of the patient should be conducted. This entails obtaining a thorough medical history, performing a comprehensive physical examination, and identifying any non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses. The secondary survey helps to uncover hidden injuries or medical conditions that may require immediate attention.

Triage System

In situations where multiple casualties are present, it is crucial to utilize a triage system. The goal of triage is to prioritize patients based on the severity of their condition and allocate resources accordingly. By utilizing a systematic approach, you can effectively organize your efforts and provide assistance to those in critical need first.

Wound Care and Dressing

Cleaning and Sterilization

When dealing with wounds, proper cleaning and sterilization techniques are vital to prevent infection. Start by washing your hands thoroughly and using sterile gloves when necessary. Cleanse the wound gently with an antiseptic solution or clean water, removing any debris. It is imperative to prevent cross-contamination and maintain a sterile environment throughout the process.

Hemostasis Techniques

To control bleeding, it is essential to learn different hemostasis techniques. Direct pressure is often the first line of defense, but if bleeding persists, you may need to apply pressure to specific pressure points or utilize tourniquets. Mastering these techniques allows you to effectively manage bleeding, potentially saving lives.

Suturing and Stapling

In certain situations, wounds may require suturing or stapling. Learning proper suturing techniques, including the different suturing methods and materials, can help minimize scarring and aid in wound closure. Additionally, understanding when to utilize stapling as an alternative can be beneficial for larger wounds or areas with less tension.

Bandaging and Splinting

Properly applying bandages and splints help stabilize and protect injured areas. Familiarizing yourself with different types of bandages, such as occlusive, compression, or triangular bandages, allows you to address various types of wounds effectively. Splinting techniques are valuable for immobilizing fractures or dislocations, preventing further injury and reducing pain.

Burn Treatment

Differentiating Burn Degrees

Understanding the different degrees of burns is crucial in determining the appropriate treatment. First-degree burns involve only the outermost layer of the skin and can often be treated with cold water and burn ointments. Second-degree burns affect deeper layers of the skin and may require additional interventions, such as dressing changes and pain management. Third-degree burns are the most severe, requiring immediate medical attention.

Cooling Techniques

For minor burns, cooling the affected area with cold water can provide immediate relief and minimize damage. However, it is important to note that for larger or more severe burns, cooling the burn site can lead to hypothermia. Knowing when and how to implement cooling techniques is key to managing burns effectively.

Dressing and Medications

Once a burn has been properly cooled, it is crucial to apply appropriate dressings and medications. Burns can be prone to infection and may require specialized dressings, such as hydrogel or antimicrobial dressings. Additionally, pain management through over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribed medications can aid in the healing process and alleviate discomfort.

Bone Fracture Management

Splinting and Immobilization

In the event of a bone fracture, knowing how to properly splint and immobilize the affected area is essential. By stabilizing the fracture, you can prevent further damage and alleviate pain. Understanding different splinting techniques, ranging from improvised splints to commercially available options, allows for quick and effective management of fractures.

Reduction Techniques

In more severe cases, fractures may require reduction, which involves realigning the bones into their proper position. This technique should only be performed by trained professionals or under their guidance. However, having a basic understanding of reduction techniques can be beneficial in emergency situations before proper medical help arrives.

Complication Identification

While managing fractures, it is important to be aware of potential complications that may arise. Complications can include compartment syndrome, nerve or vessel injuries, or bone infections. Being alert to signs and symptoms of these complications enables early intervention and improved patient outcomes.

Dislocation and Joint Injury

Splinting and Immobilization

Similar to fractures, dislocations and joint injuries require proper splinting and immobilization. By stabilizing the affected joint, you can reduce pain and prevent further damage. Utilizing techniques such as slings, splints, or wraps can effectively immobilize the area until medical help is obtained.

Reduction Techniques

In some cases, dislocations may require reduction to place the joint back into its correct position. This procedure should only be attempted by trained professionals, as improper reduction techniques can lead to further injury or complications. However, having a basic understanding of the process can assist in providing initial support until proper medical assistance is available.

Rehabilitation and Strengthening

Once a joint or dislocation injury has been treated and immobilized, rehabilitation and strengthening exercises play a vital role in recovery. By following proper rehabilitation protocols, you can regain strength, improve range of motion, and prevent future injuries. Learning and implementing these exercises can help facilitate a full recovery.

Head and Spinal Injuries

Recognition and Stabilization

Head and spinal injuries can be life-threatening and require immediate recognition and stabilization. Knowing the signs and symptoms of a head or spinal injury, such as altered consciousness, severe headache, or loss of sensation, allows you to provide appropriate care and prevent further damage.

Airway Management

In severe head or spinal injuries, maintaining a patent airway is crucial. Understanding the different airway management techniques, such as jaw thrust or modified chin lift, helps ensure the patient can breathe properly. Additionally, protecting the cervical spine during airway management is of utmost importance to prevent exacerbating any potential spinal injury.

Transportation and Avoidance of Further Injury

Transporting a patient with a head or spinal injury safely is a crucial aspect of care. Utilizing proper techniques, such as spine boards or cervical collars, aids in minimizing movement and reducing the risk of further injury. Additionally, ensuring a smooth and controlled transfer to medical facilities plays a critical role in the patient’s overall outcome.

Understanding Animal Tracking

Animal tracking is the ancient art of observing and interpreting the signs left by animals in their natural habitats. It involves studying their footprints, scat, feeding behaviors, nests, and other clues that offer insights into their whereabouts, habits, and even emotions. By understanding these tracks, we can begin to unravel the hidden stories that unfold in our own backyards, forests, and meadows.

Importance of Animal Tracking

Tracking animals is not just reserved for outdoor enthusiasts and wildlife photographers. It plays a crucial role in scientific research, wildlife conservation efforts, and even search and rescue operations. By tracking animals, we can gather valuable data about their population, migration patterns, feeding habits, and overall health. This information is vital for making informed decisions about land management, protecting endangered species, and preserving ecosystems for future generations.

Tools and Techniques for Animal Tracking

While animal tracking may seem like a daunting task, it can be made much easier with the right tools and techniques. One of the most essential tools for any tracker is a good field guide that provides detailed illustrations and descriptions of animal tracks. Binoculars, a camera, and a notepad to document your findings are also important. Additionally, a tracking stick or measuring tape can help determine an animal’s stride length and weight. Patience, observation skills, and a keen eye for detail are the key techniques that will enable you to become a successful tracker.

Interpreting Footprint Clues

Footprints are perhaps the most common and easily recognizable signs left by animals. Each footprint tells a unique story about the animal that made it. The size, shape, and arrangement of the toes can provide essential clues about the species, size, and gait of the animal. By observing the depth and condition of the footprint, you can even determine how recently the animal passed through the area. It’s like reading a book written in the language of nature.

Gaits and Stride Length

Animals have different ways of moving, known as gaits, which influence the pattern and arrangement of their footprints. Understanding these gaits can help you deduce the speed and purpose of the animal’s travel. Long and evenly spaced tracks often indicate a calm and steady walk, while widely splayed tracks may suggest a creature hopping or bounding. By measuring the stride length, you can estimate the size and weight of the animal, giving you a clearer picture of the tracks’ origins.

Signs of Feeding Behavior

The food choices and feeding behaviors of animals leave distinct signs that can be easily recognized and interpreted. For example, stripped bark on trees can indicate deer or beaver feeding, while shredded foliage and broken branches may point to the presence of rabbits or hares. Careful observation of these feeding signs can provide insights into the animal’s diet, foraging strategies, and overall health.

Examining Scat and Droppings

While it may not be the most pleasant task, examining animal scat (feces) can reveal a wealth of information about their diet, health, and territory. The size, texture, and contents of scat can help identify the animal responsible for it. By studying scat, trackers can determine if the animal is a herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore, and even detect signs of illness or stress. It’s a bit like being a detective, piecing together clues from the animal’s leftovers.

Identifying Nests and Dens

Animals create nests and dens for protection, shelter, and raising their young. By identifying these structures, trackers can gain insight into the animal’s habitat preferences and reproductive patterns. Nests can be found in the form of birds’ nests high in trees, squirrel dreys, or even underground burrows. Finding these structures not only unveils the animal’s presence but also offers a glimpse into their familial and nesting behaviors.

Trail and Rubbing Signs

Animals often leave behind additional signs of their presence in the form of trail and rubbing signs. These can include areas where grass or vegetation has been flattened, trees with bark scraped off, or bushes with broken branches. Such signs indicate paths used by animals or marking behavior, where an animal uses trees or rocks to leave their scent behind. These signs are valuable for identifying regular travel routes and territorial boundaries.

Tracking Wildlife in Different Terrains

Animal tracking is not limited to a particular type of terrain. Whether you find yourself in the dense forest, open meadows, or near water bodies, there are always clues waiting to be discovered. In forests, look for depressions caused by the weight of the animal or scratches on trees made by claws. In meadows, pay attention to flattened grass or disturbed soil. Near water, look for tracks in muddy or sandy areas. Each terrain presents its own unique challenges and rewards, inviting you to embark on exciting adventures in the great outdoors.

So, embark on the journey of animal tracking and uncover nature’s hidden secrets. With patience, practice, and a curious spirit, you can become a skilled tracker, decoding the clues left behind by the wildlife around you. Let the art of animal tracking be your guide to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Happy tracking!

Get ready to see familiar objects in a whole new light as you discover the extraordinary potential they hold in helping you navigate the great outdoors or handle unexpected emergencies.

Building Shelter

Building a shelter is one of the first and most essential tasks when it comes to survival in the great outdoors. Luckily, with just a few everyday items, you can create a sturdy and protective shelter to keep you safe from the elements.

Using a Tarp and Poles

A tarp is a versatile and lightweight material that can be transformed into an effective shelter. With the help of some poles or sticks, you can easily create a simple A-frame structure or a lean-to shelter using the tarp as the roof. Secure the tarp tightly with ropes or paracord to ensure it stays in place even during strong winds.

Creating Insulation with Newspaper

Newspaper may seem like an unlikely choice for insulation, but it can provide a surprising amount of warmth when layered properly. Crumple up the newspaper and stuff it between the layers of your clothing or bedding to create a barrier against the cold. This makeshift insulation can help retain body heat and keep you warm in chilly conditions.

Making a Bed with Cardboard

Cardboard may not seem like the most comfortable material, but in a survival situation, it can make a world of difference. Flatten out several pieces of cardboard and layer them on the ground to create a makeshift bed. This will provide a barrier between you and the cold, damp ground, and offer a more comfortable sleeping surface.

Using Trash Bags for Waterproofing

When it comes to staying dry in wet weather, trash bags can be a lifesaver. Use them to cover your backpack or gear to protect them from rain and ensure your supplies stay dry. You can also fashion a makeshift poncho by cutting a hole in the bottom of the bag and wearing it as a protective layer over your body.

Building a Fire Shelter with Aluminum Foil

In emergency situations, having a shelter that can withstand intense heat is crucial. Aluminum foil can be used to create a fire shelter, reflecting the heat away from the shelter and keeping you safe. Construct a small tent-like structure out of sturdy sticks or poles and wrap it tightly with layers of aluminum foil. This will provide a heat-resistant barrier while allowing smoke to escape.

Water Collection and Purification

Surviving in the wild requires access to clean water. Fortunately, there are everyday items that can help you collect and purify water, ensuring your hydration needs are met.

Collecting Rainwater with Plastic Bottles

Plastic bottles make excellent tools for collecting rainwater. Simply place a clean and empty plastic bottle under a steady stream of rainwater or tie it to a tree branch to collect water over time. This method allows you to accumulate a significant amount of water for drinking and cooking purposes.

Using a Coffee Filter for Purification

If you find yourself with murky or dirty water, a coffee filter can help remove sediment and impurities. Pour the water through the coffee filter into a clean container, allowing the filter to trap any particles. This simple filtration method greatly improves the quality of the water and makes it safer to drink.

Making a Solar Still with Plastic Wrap

When no clean water sources are available, you can create a solar still using plastic wrap. Dig a hole in the ground and place a container in the center. Surround the container with moist vegetation or urine, if necessary. Cover the hole with plastic wrap, leaving a small indentation in the center. The condensation that forms on the plastic wrap will collect in the container, providing you with drinkable water.

Constructing a Water Filter with Charcoal

Charcoal can act as a natural filter, removing impurities and contaminants from water. Fill a container with layers of sand, gravel, and crushed charcoal. Pour the water through this improvised filter, allowing it to seep through the various layers. The charcoal will help absorb impurities, resulting in cleaner water.

Using a Condom for Emergency Water Storage

A condom can be a handy item for storing water in a survival situation. Simply fill a condom with water and tie it securely. The durable latex material will keep the water safe and secure until you need it. Remember to use non-lubricated condoms to ensure the water remains uncontaminated.

Food Sourcing and Preparation

When it comes to finding food in the wild, improvisation is key. Everyday items can help you catch and prepare your next meal.

Creating a Fishing Net from Dental Floss

Dental floss can be repurposed as an effective fishing net. Tie a piece of dental floss between two sturdy branches, creating a net-like structure. Use this improvised net to scoop fish out of lakes, streams, or shallow water. The strong and durable nature of dental floss makes it ideal for catching small aquatic creatures.

Using a Soda Can for Fishing

A soda can can serve multiple purposes, including functioning as a makeshift fishing lure. Cut out a piece of the soda can to resemble the shape of a fish and attach a fishing hook to it. Attach the soda can lure to your fishing line, cast it into the water, and slowly reel it in to attract fish. The glimmering reflections off the soda can mimic the movement of real fish and increase your chances of catching something.

Building a Bamboo Trap for Small Game

Bamboo is a versatile material that can be used to construct a small game trap. Cut a section of bamboo and create an opening on one end. Place bait inside the bamboo, such as berries or nuts, and prop it up with a stick. When an animal enters the trap to reach the bait, the bamboo will tip over, trapping the animal inside.

Cooking with an Altoids Tin

An Altoids tin can be transformed into a compact and portable cooking stove. Fill the tin with char cloth or other flammable materials and ignite it. Place a small pot or container on top of the tin, creating a stable surface for cooking. This makeshift stove can be used to boil water or cook small meals, providing nourishment in survival situations.

Making a Backpacking Stove with a Tin Can

A larger tin can can be used to create a more substantial backpacking stove. Cut out the bottom of the can, leaving about an inch of material intact for stability. Poke holes around the upper side of the can to allow air to reach the flame. Fill the can with fuel, such as denatured alcohol, and ignite it. This improvised stove can be used for cooking larger meals and offers a lightweight and portable cooking solution.

Multitool

Leatherman’s Wave Multitool is one of the best on the market for the price. The Wave has 100% stainless steel blades and tools. It comes with needle nose pliers, regular pliers, wire cutters, hard-wire cutters, 420HC knife, 420HC serrated knife, saw, scissors, wood/metal file, diamond-coated file, large bit driver, small bit driver, medium screwdriver, 8-inch ruler, bottle opener, can opener, and a wire stripper. This one also comes with a nice Leather/Nylon combination sheath.

Paracord

425 lbs Paracord / Utility Rope for crafting, paracord bracelets, survival bracelets, tie downs, and camping. is a great all in one solution. Paracord is made up of 5 removable inner strands. The cord’s durable nylon sheath will perform in high tension wear and tear situations, even in harsh climates. Not only can you use the paracord as an extremely strong rope, but you can also take the strands out and use them for fishing, sewing, dental floss, nets, traps the possibilities are absolutely endless. Be careful though, some brands of paracord are poorly manufactured and can be missing strands making the rope weaker. Sometimes it can be made out of poor materials all together. I have had very good luck with SGT Knots products and plan to keep buying from them. Paracord is a wonderful addition to your survival pack.

550 Type III Paracord, 7-Strand Core, High Strength

Small Folding Knife

A small knife for smaller tasks is needed. Sometimes you don’t want to pull out your massive Ka-Bar to do a small job (even though we all love our Ka-Bar’s). This knife is made from CPM-S30V stainless steel and has a back lock for safety (back locks are MUCH safer in my opinion than side locks which sometimes malfunction and don’t hold). I will choose Spyderco over Ka-Bar folding knifes any day. They both have their place and Spyderco holds it’s own with folding knives.

Knife Sharpener

This knife sharpener is a great tactical and compact solution for sharpening your survival knives. The sharpener is made out of Diamond/Carbide. If you are chopping, skinning, or carving it will be extremely hard to with with a dull knife!

Sharpen your knife with Lansky QuadSharp QSHARP

Binoculars

These may not be quite as necessary as some other items listed here, however they definitely would be missed if they were not included in the bugout bag. Binoculars can be a wonderful protection tool. It is always nice to see what you may be walking into before you are already there. These binoculars are 100% waterproof and have a 12x magnification. It is hard to come by good waterproof binoculars, these are also a compact size to fit in your bag.

Bushnell H2O Waterproof/Fogproof Compact Roof Prism Binocular

Rain Gear

Staying warm and dry is crucial to survival. When the rain comes and you absolutely have to go out in it or have not prepared a shelter a poncho will be well worth having. This poncho is a one size fits all and has a fully tapped paratex dry shell. It also is designed to cover personal equipment and backpack, keeping your gear dry is very important as everything may not be 100% waterproof. Can be used as an emergency bivvi by design. For staying dry this Snugpak poncho is a great solution.

Snugpak Patrol Poncho

Extra Clothes

Extra clothes are very important for a survivalist. Try to find clothes made with good wicking material (synthetic fibers such as teflon or polyester) to help keep moisture out. Also keep them in a dry waterproof bag inside of your BOB in case your BOB gets wet unintentionally.

Conclusion

As with the basic bug out bag you do not need to buy ALL of these items at once, you can always reference back and get maybe a few items on this list every few weeks or months (whatever fits your budget). Most bugout bag’s are not built overnight, and shouldn’t be since it needs to be filled with survival gear that could potentially save your life in difficult situations so it’s always best to do your own research to ensure you get what fits your needs.

Obviously the most important part of a bug out bag. I don’t personally own this bag (wish I did) but I have friends that use this bag and love it. It is a great size plus it has MOLLE straps so that you can attach other MOLLE compatible gear to it (medical kits, magazine pouches, universal pouches etc..). This bag is Official US Military Surplus so you know that it will be great quality.

In my personal opinion Ka-Bar is the number 1 survivalist blade out there. For the price and performance you cant beat them. You can use this knife for protection, chopping wood, whittling etc.. These things are limitless and extremely durable.

This is a multiple purpose must have item.

The Lifeline Ultralight Survival Kit weighs in at only 7oz and measures 8″ x 7.8″ x 1.5″, a very small and light survival kit. It’s a good starter survival kit and well worth it for the price. You can easily get the items out of the waterproof container easily and if you need to they are easily replaceable.

The kit is packaged inside the Weatherproof Carry Case, so inside that you have: Waterproof Matches, Aluminium Foil (18″ x 12″), Emergency Blanket, 50′ Fishing Line, 4 Hooks and 4 Sinkers, 8′ Snare Wire, Map Compass, Emergency Whistle, 10′ Emergency Cord, 36″ Roll Duct Tape, Reusable Zipper Lock Bag, Surgical Blade, 5 Wound Closure Strips, 3 Safety Pins and a handy Survival Guide.

Water Filter

Clean water is ABSOLUTELY essential. Yes you may have some water saved up, but when you run out you will want a quick and easy way to get clean fresh water from any source. This personal water filter straw removes 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria (per the manufacturer). It will filter 1,000L of water, that translates to 264.172 gallons and will filter particles down to approximately 0.2 microns. Pick up a few of them.
Mess Kit

This is a Stainless Steel Mess Kit for cooking your food over a fire and eating out of. You can use this to drink out of as well. Most MRE’s will require you to have one of these.

Flashlight

This is a great flashlight for a bugout bag. Having an LED light will really save on batteries plus you should never have to replace the bulb. Maglite is known for durability and reliability, you can never go wrong.

Be sure and pick up some extra AA batteries to put in your bag! Batteries and a holster should be included.

A good EDC Flashlight is this MagLite SP2P11H LED 2 Cell AA PRO Flashlight with Batteries and Holster

Waterproof Tarp

A durable waterproof tarp is very important to have. Possibly one of the most important. You can use waterproof tarps for building a shelter, catching dew / rain water, an extra blanket as well as many other things. It would not hurt to get a couple extra here, in being a survivalist you never know what kind of situation you could end up in.

Multi-Purpose Silver/Brown Heavy Duty DRY TOP Poly Tarp 10′ x 12′

Matches

A fire is absolutely necessary as well when you don’t have access to shelter and/or electricity. These matches will stay lit if you drop them in water and will also stay lit in high winds. These UCO Stormproof Matches will stay lit for approximately 15 seconds.

Survival fire UCO Stormproof Matches, Waterproof and Windproof with 15 Second Burn Time – 25 Matches

Butane Torches

Once again fire is absolutely CRUCIAL to survival in any situation. Butane torches are great since they are wind resistant. So it’s definitely worth picking up a few of them, as well as some torch butane refill.

Camping Utensils

Cant go without eating utensils. Well you could eat with your fingers, but this is much easier and cleaner. This compact fold-able kit includes a knife, fork, spoon, corkscrew, and a bottle opener. This is much easier than carrying them all separately. It also comes with with a storage bag.

Foldable Shovel Spade Tool

A shovel is a great tool for building a shelter. This E-Tool also has a serrated and a plain edge for hacking, cutting, or slashing. Also this shovel will fold up into a very compact size to carry. It does not come with a cover to put it in, however those can be easily found on Amazon if you find it necessary to have one.

This basic 200 piece Coleman First Aid Kit is a great kit to start out with. If you want to add a few extra items I would include a good treatment for snakebites as well as a Basic Bleeding Control Pack down the road. You don’t want to get a terrible wound or a snake bite and not have a remedy close by. Trust me.

Food MRE’s

food is very important. This kit includes 12 meals and each meal includes a flame-less heater. Each meal is approximately 1250 calories. MRE’s do last quite a few years, but always check the expiration date to ensure that when you need them they will be ready to eat. For more tips, see our article on 7 Prepper Food Storage Tips For Survivalists.

Grab n go food storage like these MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) are a great option

Water

Water is also very important in survival instances. These little pouches are great to throw in your bag and will keep for 5 years. In most cases you will want to use these water pouches as a last resort, try to get your water from other sources or use your LifeStraw and save these for extremely harsh times.

Survival Handbook

The 29 piece ultralight survival kit comes with a small survival guide, but nothing like this one. This one will cover you in absolutely any situation and climate you come across. This has some extra tips on preparedness, how to make a camp, where to find food, what to eat, what not to eat, first aid, and disaster survival. If there is one book you want with you in harsh times, this one is much better than just a good read. It might save your life or someone elses.

Check out SAS Survival Handbook, Revised Edition: For Any Climate, in Any Situation by Lofty Wiseman

Protection

It may also be in your interest to have some sort of extra protection like a gun. You may have some around the house, if you have any extras you may want to throw a hand gun with a couple of magazines and some ammo into your bag. You won’t regret it.

Conclusion

Always keep in mind that it is not necessary to buy ALL of these items at once, you can always reference back and get maybe a few items on this list every few weeks or months (whatever fits your budget). Most bugout bag’s are not built overnight, and shouldn’t be since it needs to be filled with survival gear that could potentially save your life in difficult situations so it’s always best to do your own research to ensure you get what fits your needs.

In this post I am going to be looking at what I think is the best survival kit for hiking, for instance if you find yourself stuck in the mountains because someone has twisted their ankle while hiking. So in addition to a first aid kit you should also be carrying a survival kit.

EMDMAK Survival Kit

The EMDMAK Survival Kit is absolutely my most cherished hiking survival kit due to being light and compact. It only weighs 6.8oz and measures 5”X 3.5”X1.6”. It is a perfect addition to anyones hiking gear.

This is a high quality emergency survival kit. The case is zip fastened shockproof and waterproof and has everything you might need from a compass and emergency whistle to a wire saw and fire starter. All of the components are well made from stainless steel or durable plastic.

Inside the case you get

Stainless Steel Versatile Tool Card – This a multi tool comprising of a can opener, knife edge, screwdriver, ruler, cap opener, 4 position wrench, butterfly wrench, saw blade, direction ancillary indication, 2 position wrench, and a key ring holder.

Multifunction Flashlight Pliers – with a LED flashlight (battery included), needle nose pliers, wire cutters, knife, saw, cross and slot screwdrivers, bottle opener.

Fire Starter – A necessity in every survival kit. Simple to use just draw the strike rod down the block which will create sparks to light your kindling. It will make a fire whether it is wet, cold, raining or snowing.

Compass – Compact, flexible and easy to use

Wire Saw – Sharp and smooth blade to cut through small things quickly and not hurt your hand.

Emergency Whistle – Loud whistle with a keyring on one end

Emergency Blanket – Which can give you emergency protection in all weathers.

Conclusion:

It is a must have for any outdoor enthusiast whether you go hunting, hiking, climbing, camping or biking. You never know when you just might end up in an emergency situation and need it so having it will give you that piece of mind knowing you are prepared. Consider checking out the survival kit essentials.

In this article we will look at how you can quickly treat a fracture. The goal here is to protect your limb. Ultimately, you must get to a hospital and get it treated. X-rays will need to be done to determine the fracture and place a cast.

first aid techniques shown here are to be used to immobilize the affected limb so that pain is minimized, and any internal bone damage is not exacerbated.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Fracture

The first thing that you should be able to do is to recognize the signs and symptoms of a fracture. The most obvious type of fracture is the open fracture. This is where the broken bone has pierced the skin and is now protruding out of the limb.

If the patient heard or felt his/her bones crack or they can feel like bone rubbing against bone internally during impact, there might be a fracture. Other signs are swelling, a tingling feeling and numbness in the area. There may be other wounds close to the affected area as well. The pain of a fracture will worsens over time. This is one of the surest signs of a fracture.

How To Treat Arm Fractures

Contrary to popular belief, not all arm fractures require you to place the arm in a sling. If the fracture is close to the elbow and the bone breaks in a way where bending the arm at the elbow causes more pain, you should avoid a sling. Instead, place a towel between the arm and midsection of your body so that there is no gap between the arm and the body. You may use a belt or two bandages to tie around the arm and midsection. In this way, the arm will be immobilized and close to the body supported by the towel.

If it is a simple fracture, you can use a triangular bandage to form a sling for the fractured arm and tie the ends behind the patients neck. Once again, you can tie a second bandage around the arm and your chest to immobilize the arm further. The aim here is to provide support and prevent excessive movement of the injured limb.

How To Treat A Leg Fracture

Leg fractures are slightly more complicated. For a lower leg fracture, it is best to ask the person to lie flat and feel the patients affected foot to see if they can sense your touch.

Roll up a towel and place it between both legs. Now tie a bandage around the ankles with the towel sandwiched between. Tie a second bandage around both legs just below the knee. This will immobilize the legs and prevent the fractured limb from moving about.

In the event that there is an open fracture and the bone is protruding through the skin, the first step is to stop the bleeding. Apply pressure on the sides of the bone and skin to stop the bleeding. Do not apply pressure on top of the bone and try to push it back in.

Once the bleeding stops, roll up some towels or padding and place them around the affected bone. In this way, you are protecting the injured area with cushioning material. Roll up a towel and place it along the outer side of the leg. Place a wooden splint next to the towel and tie it all together with one bandage around the ankle and one around the thigh.

Now you have immobilized the limb. Using splints is required if medical help is out of reach. The splint on one leg will allow the victim to still move with a makeshift crutch till he/she gets to a place where they can call for help.

Remember the tips above and if you or anyone you know ever experiences a fracture out in the hills, you will know what to do. Stay safe. Consider learning more about first aid to be better prepared.
