Everyone knows that the Christmas season is all about giving and that no one should be concerned about how much a particular gift costs. But let’s face it: most of us also have to worry about our budgets while we are doing our Christmas shopping.

While there are truly some people to which money is no object, the reality is that most of us simply cannot afford to purchase everything we want during the Christmas season. We all have to make some concessions while we do our Christmas shopping and keep our eyes open for great deals. Fortunately there are always lots of bargains you can take advantage of during the Christmas season.

Finding bargains while Christmas shopping is actually quite easy.

Although most stores hold sales throughout the year, just about every retailer offers significant bargains in the weeks just before Christmas. These retailers know shoppers will be out in full force during this time, so they offer their best deals hoping to attract them.

The best way to ensure you are receiving the best possible deals while you are Christmas shopping is to spend some time window shopping well before the Christmas season. This will give you a good idea of what types of items are currently being sold. It also gives you a good indication of the regular prices of these items. This information can be used when Christmas shopping to determine just how much you are saving by purchasing sale items just before Christmas.

Ask yourself: are you really saving money, or is the store’s Christmas season discount exaggerated? The only way to know for sure is if you’ve already seen the same items at the same store months earlier, and noted its original retail price.

When shopping for bargain items at Christmas, be aware of the return policy on sale items. If possible, get the sales associate to write the return policy right on the bill of sale.

While you might think the gift is a great idea at the time, you may realize it is not such a good idea later. What if you learn that the gift-ee has already treated themselves to the same item? Or you may find a defect in the product and want to return it. However, if there was a no return policy on the product you will not be able to get your money back.

Even if you decide to keep the item, the recipient of the gift may not like the item and may wish to return it. However, if you bought it in a sale where no returns were allowed, she may not be able to return the gift.

There is, however, one aspect to shopping for Christmas bargains which all shoppers should understand: just because an item is on sale does not mean you should purchase the item. (I know: that’s a tough one!)

Some Christmas shoppers get caught up in the idea of purchasing a bargain item which has been greatly reduced in price but it may be an item they do not really need and that their recipient might not really want. When this is the case it is a better idea to not purchase the item. You will be saving money by doing this.

Think of it this way: you may find a warm wool coat which is reduced in price by 75%. This may seem like a bargain that is too good to pass up — but if you live in a warm climate and will never wear the coat it is actually a waste of money. You may be only paying 25% of the original price but if you do not buy the coat at all you will not be paying anything!

If you are one of those people who gets their Christmas shopping done early every year, you probably find yourself getting mean looks from others around the holiday season. This is especially true if you make a habit of letting others know you have already finished your Christmas shopping.

This happens because the vast majority of people do not get their Christmas shopping done early and may be envious of those who manage to finish their shopping early. The fact that most Christmas shoppers wait until the last minute is evident by the crowds who flock to malls and shopping centers in the final days before Christmas.

If you are one of these people who always finishes their Christmas shopping early you may already have a method to accomplishing this goal. However, if you are like the majority of people who spend every year last minute Christmas shopping, here are some tips for getting your Christmas shopping done early this year.

One of the best ways to get your Christmas shopping done early is to try to do a great deal of Christmas shopping for the next year in the first few days after Christmas. Although the stores are usually quite crowded on these days, there is not the same sense of urgency which prevails in the days just before Christmas so the atmosphere is more relaxed.

Additionally, many stores are holding sales so not only can you do a large portion of your shopping but you are also likely to save a great deal of money in the process. The first few days after Christmas are an excellent time to shop because you are likely still in the Christmas spirit.

Another way to get your Christmas shopping done early is to plan on doing all of your Christmas shopping online this year. This is an excellent idea because most retailers will wrap the item for you and ship it directly to the recipient. You will pay a little more for these services but the convenience of not having to do the wrapping yourself or stand in long lines at the post office is certainly worth the extra fee. Committing to Christmas shopping online really helps you to get you shopping done early because you know you have to make your purchases early in order for them to arrive on time.

Luckily, Amazon.com sells more than just books. You can get everything from books and DVDs to clothing and even gourmet food.

Another way to get your Christmas shopping done early is plan on purchasing two gifts for each person on your list at the time of their birthday. You can give them the first gift for their birthday and store the other item away until Christmas. This is a great idea because it helps you to get your shopping done early so you can avoid the hassle of going to overcrowded malls and shopping centers and searching for last minute Christmas gifts.

If you follow this simple strategy when the Christmas season arrives, you will already have most, if not all, of your Christmas gifts purchased already and you can spend your time relaxing and enjoying the holiday season instead of running around trying to find the perfect gift for each person on your list.

While this strategy is effective it is important to note you could be destined to some last minute shopping if you have people on your list who have birthdays in late December. In this case you will have to plan ahead and purchase their birthday gift and their Christmas gift early.

Several times a year retailers offer big sales on many of their items. Some of these times include President’s Day, Easter, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and of course Christmas. Retailers hold sale events during these times of year to encourage shoppers to get out and make some big purchases.

The last minute Christmas present shopping frenzy which takes place each year can be largely attributed to the sale events at Christmas time. Many shoppers specifically wait until the last minute to do their Christmas present shopping because they know many items will go on sale at this time.

While this is an excellent way to save money, savvy Christmas shoppers know that doing a little bit of their Christmas shopping at these other sales during the year can help to ease the stress and financial burdens often associated with last minute Christmas shopping.

Shopping for Christmas presents during big sales is definitely a good idea but it is important to remember that there are some ways to really take advantage of a big sale and some ways to have your Christmas shopping deterred by a big sale. Here are a few basic strategies for doing your Christmas shopping during big sales without falling into some of the common pitfalls often associated with shopping during sales.

One of the biggest pitfalls associated with doing your Christmas shopping during big sales events is to end up purchasing many items you donít need and would not have purchased if they werenít on sale. This can be a problem especially if it causes you to exceed the budget you have set for Christmas shopping. This often happens when shoppers encounter a sale they think is simply too good to pass up.

For some shoppers a discount of more than 50% seems very appealing and they may be tempted to buy these items just because the price has been reduced by so much but they might not really need the item. In this case the shopper may be saving 50% off of the original price because of the discount but if they wouldn’t have purchased the item if it wasn’t on sale they are really spending more than they would normally spend and are essentially losing money.

To avoid this pitfall, it is wise to make a list of each person on your list and what you intend to purchase for them so you will not be tempted by big bargains.

Another problem associated with Christmas shopping during big sales is that hesitancy often causes the shopper to miss out on an item. When you are Christmas shopping during a big sale it is important to be slightly impulsive. If you see an item you think you would like to purchase for someone on your Christmas list, you have to either buy it right away or run the risk that it will be gone if you come back later to look for the item. Retailers often put items on sale when they only have a limited quantity of the item in stock and therefore once they sell out the item is gone. So it is important to remember that when you are Christmas shopping during a big sale, you have to make decisions quickly. You need to either decide to purchase an item or completely forget about the item because it will likely be sold soon after you leave the store.

Searching for the perfect gift for everyone on your gift list can be a great deal of fun. It is also rewarding when you find and purchase a gift you just know your loved one will treasure.

However, there is one aspect of Christmas shopping which seems to be difficult for everyone. When it comes to buying clothing while Christmas shopping, everyone hesitates. There are just so many variables when it comes to clothes shopping that it can be difficult to shop for clothing for those on your gift list.

The matter of size is one thing that makes Christmas shopping for clothing so difficult. You may have a good idea about what size your friend or family members is but it can be difficult to select the correct size particularly for items such as pants, skirts, dresses or blazers.

Clothing such as sweatshirts in which the fit does not have to be perfectly tailored are easier to shop for, but even with these items you still run the risk of selecting a shirt which is too small. A sweatshirt which is too big is considered acceptable as many people where them that way. Put shirts and tops that are too small can be rather uncomfortable and will not likely be worn.

Some people — especially women — may be offended when presented with a Christmas gift in “Extra Large”! When Christmas shopping for clothing, select casual items. And make sure to check the store’s return policy.

As the salesperson if the item is likely to shrink in the wash. And if possible, get a “gift receipt” that doesn’t display the price you paid for the clothing. That way, the recipient won’t know how much you spent.

Selecting colors is another difficult aspect of Christmas shopping for clothing. In general if you know your friend or family members wears a particular color often, it is safe to assume they like this color and enjoy wearing it. However, even this safe strategy can backfire. You may decide to purchase an article of clothing in this particular color because you see your friend or family members wearing the color often but you may soon find out they are tired of wearing that particular color and were hoping to receive clothing in other colors to expand their wardrobe.

Again you can alleviate this problem by talking to your friend or relative and asking them what colors they would like to wear. This lets them know you are planning to purchase clothing for them for Christmas but does not give away the type of clothing or the style of the clothing.

Perhaps one of the most difficult dilemmas associated with Christmas shopping for clothing is selecting a style which will be appealing to the recipient of the Christmas gift and will look good on them as well. If you are purchasing a gift of clothing for a really close friend or family member, you already have good idea about the style of clothing she likes. Even so, it still can be difficult to pick out items which you know she will like and will be flattering on her in terms of style. Again one of the best ways to deal with this situation is to ask the friend or relative to come shopping with you.

One solution to all these problems is to give the recipient the best of both worlds: gift cards to use at their favorite clothing store. This is especially welcome at Christmas, because the recipient can use the gift cards to take advantage of post-Christmas “Boxing Day” sales that run until the end of the year. This way, they not only get the exact item of clothing they want, they can often get more items than they would purchase with their own money, thanks to all the 50% off sales.

After a close examination, you will likely see that they can be used for a lot more than you may have originally thought. Christmas Depot is your best bet for online shopping for Christmas lights.

Christmas depot has a huge selection of wholesale Christmas lights (regular or LED), and even different colors of wires so you can pick one that won’t stand out like a sore thumb or clash with your interior or exterior decor.

They even have a special blog all about Christmas lights: what kinds to buy, how to put them up and wire them safely and more information you’ll use!

As previously mentioned, when it comes to Christmas lights, we often associate Christmas lights with Christmas trees. This is because a large number of individuals decorate their Christmas trees with Christmas lights. What is nice about using Christmas lights on a Christmas tree is that the lights come in a number of different sizes and styles. It is possible to purchase Christmas lights with small light bulbs, as well as large ones.

Traditional Christmas lights come white in color or with a combination of all different colors. In recent years, the popularity of different colored lights has skyrocketed. You can now purchase single colored Christmas lights or lights with a specific color combination. These types of lights are available online from Christmas Depot, and are ideal for those who are looking to theme their Christmas tree.

Although many individuals choose to use Christmas lights for their Christmas tree, as stated above, there are other uses for them as well. One of those uses is for decorating the outside of your home. Online and in many retail stores across America, you can easily find Christmas lights that are designed for outside use, particular around a home. These type of lights are often referred to as icicle Christmas lights.

Icicle Christmas lights allow the lights to hang off the side of a house. While it is possible to find multicolored outdoor Christmas lights, you will find that they are most commonly sold in the traditional white color.

In addition to decorating the outside of the outside of your home with Christmas lights, you can also decorate the trees outside of your home. A number of homeowners, each year, decorate the trees outside their home, often exactly like their indoor Christmas tress.

Many times, these trees are relatively small in size; therefore, the same types of Christmas lights that can be used on a regular tree can also, sometimes, be used on an outdoor tree. Decorating the small trees in your yard is a great way to bring a touch of Christmas to your neighborhood.

You can also use Christmas lights to decorate any one of the rooms that can be found inside your home. There are many individuals who hang Christmas lights along the top of their walls. This is a great way to bring extra Christmas spirit into the room that your Christmas tree is in, as well as other rooms.

In fact, you can even use Christmas lights to decorate one of your home’s bedrooms. This idea is often loved by teenagers and other children; many enjoy the bright lights and colors. Decorating your home’s bedrooms is a great way to bring the Christmas spirit into a room that you may have otherwise not decorated.

As nice as it is to decorate your home for Christmas, you may also want to decorate your office or your workspace. Unfortunately, not everyone celebrates Christmas. This may pose a problem, when it comes to decorating your office workspace. However, you can still, in many cases, use Christmas lights to decorate your office.

In most cases, you will find that it is the decorations that scream Christmas that cause the problems, not the lights themselves. Therefore, if you supervisors approve, you could easily hang Christmas lights around your office walls or along the sides of your work desk.

Isn’t it amazing all of the different ways that you can use Christmas lights to decorate your home or even your office? What is even more amazing is the above mentioned examples are just a few of the many ways that you can use Christmas lights to bring the holiday spirit into your home or office.

Gift baskets are one of the most popular presents to give away simply because they are not only fun to buy or make, but they’re also fun to receive.

Just the thought of receiving a bunch of different small things, or a lot of one single thing, is enough to make anyone happy. Variety and abundance is the key to a gift basket everyone will appreciate.

Unless you’re buying a present for someone that’s intentionally on a diet or just can’t stand candy for some reason, candy is usually always well-received!

Here’s one idea:

Visit the huge array of candy gift baskets at Amazon.com — and instead of buying the finished gift basket from Amazon, note what’s in the gift basket you like the best, then buy all the ingredients and put it together yourself. You’ll save money and you can better customize the gift basket for the lucky recipient.

Here are more ideas for filling the gift basket you’re about to give with some of the best candy in a candy store:

Filling the Bottom
When filling a gift basket, make sure there is plenty of stuff on the bottom of the gift basket to enjoy. Many gift baskets simply have a soft padding, such as shredded paper or even tissue paper lying in the bottom, but for a candy gift basket one suggestion to use would be to fill the bottom with M&Ms or little chocolate candy pieces instead. It doesn’t matter whether they’re taken out of the wrapper or not, though, but if they were dumped out of the wrapper for the gift basket then chances are that they are going to be used simply for decoration anyway. But an M&M chocolate bottom can be used to hold the rest of the candy in the gift basket.

The Heart of the Gift Basket
There are plenty of options here, but the best thing to do would be to take a trip to the candy store and spend just a set amount of money on candy altogether. Little candy bars can be thrown in, candy mints, gummy worms and other gummy candies, as well as a whole bunch of other option. The best thing to remember, though, is to fill the gift basket to the brim if you’re going to do it right!

After you’re all done filling the bottom of the gift basket, as well as the main part that the recipient will see then it is time to buy a few other large pieces of candy so that they’ll lay neatly on top. Choose king size candy bars, big packages of variety packs of candy, licorice sticks, and just anything that would fit neatly on the top of the basket.

Of course you’ll also probably want to wrap the gift basket in shrink wrap so that none of the candy falls out.

TIP: purchase affordable, easy to use shrink wrap like Basket Accents Shrink Wrap Bags that you use with an ordinary blow dryer.

You can then wrap the basket with a nice bow or ribbon for presentation and to secure the shrink wrap.

All in all, a candy gift basket is easy and affordable to make, and a pleasure to receive as a present!

Christmas is a yearly holiday when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus and many families exchange Christmas gifts. Unlike “movable feasts” like Easter, Christmas is always celebrated on December 25th.

There are many holiday traditions including Christmas dinner, sending Christmas cards, visiting Santa, baking Christmas cookies and making homemade Christmas candies.

Homes are decorated inside and out with colorful lights and holiday decorations. People usually try to spread goodwill, compassion and peace during the Christmas holiday season.

Some countries celebrate on Christmas Eve, other on both Christmas Eve and Christmas day, while other countries celebrate Boxing Day on December 26th.

One church, the Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates Christmas on January 6th. Eastern Orthodox churches celebrate Christmas on January 7th.

(Note: The date is just a tradition and is not considered to be Jesus’ actual birth date.)

Many of the seasons decorations lead back to Christ’s birth such as Nativity managers, star ornaments and the giving of gifts.

Christmas day during the Middle ages was more of a festival. King William I of England chose Christmas Day to be crowned king in 800.

During the Reformation, Protestants condemned the celebration of Christmas as mere trappings, while Catholics promoted the festival as a religious event.

Colonial America saw the Puritans disapproving of the trappings of the Christmas celebration and it was outlawed in Boston in 1659 to 1681. However Christian residents of Virginia and New York celebrated the holiday.

Charles Dickens’ book A Christmas Carol, published in 1843 did much to revive the holiday’s popularity.

There was great controversy in the 20th century over the nature of Christmas (was it a religious holiday or was it a secular holiday). The issue was brought to trial several times to decide because of the view that a federal holiday was a violation of separation of church and state.

On December 6th, 1999, the verdict for Ganulin vs. United States declared that “the establishment of Christmas Day as “a legal public holiday does not violate the Establishment Clause because it has a secular purpose.”

This decision was later upheld on December 19, 2000 by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Indeed, many Christians believe the holiday has become too secular. It is common to hear cries of “getting back to the true meaning of Christmas” around the holidays.

He’s an expert who’s seen and tried it all. That’s why I (and thousands of others) look forward to his email newsletter every week. Each one is packed with highly practical, easy to understand information about beginning and advanced internet marketing and web best practices.

This week’s newsletter from Larry Chase is no exception. It’s devoted to sharing the “Best Holiday Shopping Sites and Apps for 2010.”

For example, here’s part of Larry Chase’s review of the comparison site FindTheBest:

Kindle vs. Nook? Beaujolais vs. Burgundy? Candy Land or Chutes and Ladders? If you can’t decide which one would make a better gift, run your options through this research engine and compare each product side by side.

He also talks about sites you may not be familiar with, such as ShopKick:

“If you’re willing to give up a little choice in the stores you shop at in exchange for special offers and reward points, Shopkick might help you stretch your holiday budget.

“Shopkick, a location-based shopping app available for iPhone and Android systems (at time of writing), points you toward partner stores in your vicinity that have exclusive deals and reward points called Kickbucks.”

So if you’re looking for a short, trustworthy overview of the best holiday shopping sites and apps for 2010, check out Larry Chases’ review.

Traveling by air is usually stressful to begin with. But when you have to travel during the Christmas holidays, it usually means taking along family members and that can add extra stress.

Reduce air travel stress by planning ahead and using these airline tips for a happy and stress free airplane ride.

There are a few things to keep in mind when traveling by air with kids in tow.

The first is that airline food is tasteless, plain and unappealing to most adults and certainly kids will find it equally disgusting. Bring plastic containers or baggies filled with your child’s favorite treats and meals such as fruits, veggie sticks, toddler finger foods, Cheerios and such that will appeal to their young taste buds and keep them happily munching. If you are bringing food aboard make sure they are in see-through containers, or factory-sealed food. Remember to bring along wipes as well, to clean sticky fingers.

Unlike a car ride, where you can pull off at rest stops, a plane is a long endless ride for youngsters. To help pass the time you can pack in your carry on baggage some simple toys to amuse them. Pack crayons and coloring books, stuffed animals, dolls and action figures. You can also bring along music CDs with headphones.

Babies will need a pacifier or bottle to suck on during times when the cabin pressure is likely to bother them like during takeoff and touchdown.

If possible schedule the flight during naptimes or bedtime so that your child will be less disturbed by these minor discomforts.

Check with your airline to see what carry on baggage is appropriate for youngsters. Ask if it is all right to bring a booster seat so that your child can see out the window. (Ask for a window seat for your child over five).

Arrive at least an hour early for domestic flights and two hours early for international flights.

Be flexible when it comes to flights as changing departure days be even so much as one day might give you a cheaper rate or an emptier plane (who likes a crowded flight).

If flying internationally check for passport requirements and vaccination requirements. This US government website has useful passport information.

Security wait times may slow you down so check before you leave home to find out if your flight has any wait times established. You used to be able to check security wait times at the TSA website, but it is currently under construction. However, Fox World Travel has a functioning security wait times calculator.

(Your family and friends can track your flight at FlightExplorer.com.)

You may have better flights using suburban airports than big city airports because they are less congested.

Ship packages to your destination well ahead of time, instead of using baggage, to avoid overweight fees and long check-in lines. You can try using Greyhound’s PackageXpress.

You may also want to check out Virtual Bellhop; they specialize in shipping excess luggage worldwide to your destination ahead of you, so you don’t have to drag it around with you and get penalized for having too much baggage.

Air security agents may open wrapped Christmas gifts so do not wrap presents until you get to your destination.

The day after Thanksgiving is commonly referred to as Black Friday. This day is traditionally one of the busiest shopping days of the years and for many signifies the first day of Christmas shopping.

While the term Black Friday was originally used to represent the day in which retailers returned to profitability, many who work in the retail industry use this term as a way to describe the crowds and chaos which accompany Christmas shopping on Black Friday.

Likewise consumers expect significant sales to go along with the large crowds which flock to stores.

For many shopping on Black Friday is a tradition which wouldn’t be missed for the world. These individuals look forward to the sales and starting their shopping as a way to get into the Christmas spirit. These individuals can be counted on to arrive before the malls and shopping centers even open to get a great parking spot, to make multiple trips to their cars to drop off packages before returning to the shopping area to make more purchases and to almost literally shop until they drop.

This year, Target is advertising the fact that there stores will be opening at 4 AM.

These are the individuals retailers count on each year to boost their quarterly earnings and to help them report profitability for the year.

Those who enjoy Christmas shopping on Black Friday feel this way for a number of different reasons. Some enjoy shopping on this day for the tremendous sales which are inevitable. Still others enjoy shopping on this day because they like to take things one season as a time and figure now that Thanksgiving is over; it is time to start focusing on Christmas.

There are even others who like shopping on this day for the excellent people watching opportunity the day presents. Whether or not they get any actual shopping done these individuals flock to shopping malls on the day after Thanksgiving because they know there will be tons of other shoppers to observe.

Finally there are those who start their Christmas shopping on the day after Thanksgiving because of a sense of tradition. It is these individuals who have simply always started their Christmas shopping on this day out of habit. Their parents probably started Christmas shopping on Black Friday and they simply learned this is the day to start Christmas shopping. They will also likely pass on the habit to their own children.

Conversely there are other shoppers who absolutely refuse to step foot inside a mall or shopping center on Black Friday. For these shoppers trying to get any shopping done on this day is near impossible. They are willing to sacrifice the opportunity to buy some items as gifts at excellent sale prices just to avoid the throng of shoppers who swarm the stores on this one particular day.

However, it is important to not that just because these shoppers avoid shopping areas on Black Friday does not mean they donít enjoy great sale prices on the Christmas gifts they purchase.

These shoppers may take advantage of sales throughout the year to accomplish their Christmas shopping within their set budget.

There are still others who typically do not do any shopping on Black Friday, but these individuals do not necessarily avoid the malls and shopping areas on this day either. There are many people who enjoy taking a trip to the local mall or shopping center on the day after Thanksgiving just to enjoy the hustle and bustle the day presents. For these people just walking around and experiencing the excitement around them helps to put them into the holiday spirit.

Whether you are an early Christmas shopper, a last minute Christmas shopper or just a people watcher, you likely understand it is appropriate to expect large crowds in malls and shopping centers on Black Friday. It is up to you to decide whether or not you choose to join the shoppers on this hectic day.

However, if that nostalgic film A Christmas Story is your favorite Christmas movie, you can now give Christmas gifts inspired by the beloved film:

* Remember when Ralphie got in trouble for swearing in front of his parents? Relive that hilarious, true-life moment with “A Christmas Story” brand “Ohhh… Fudge!! Creamy Chocolate Fudge.” This delicious chocolate fudge is a gag gift that recipients will actually enjoy and appreciate.

This fudge is made from scratch in a small family owned candy factory in rural Medina, Ohio… just minutes from where the movie A Christmas Story was actually filmed!

Each batch is hand stirred in copper kettles, using only the finest ingredients. Click here to order “Ohhh… Fudge!! Christmas Story Chocolate Fudge.”

* Be just like Ralphie’s dad and put an authentic Christmas Story Leg Lamp in your front window! Or use it as an alternative to a traditional Christmas tree. Embarrass your family and amuse your neighbors and guests.

The Christmas Story Leg Lamp is a 20″ scaled down version from the movie. A 3-way switch allows you to choose your lighting mood by lighting the leg, lampshade or both together! Click here to order the real 20-inch high “Christmas Story Leg Lamp”

* Not gutsy enough to place a Christmas Story Leg Lamp in your front window? Why not choose this identical but smaller and slightly less embarrassing 12-inch high votive candle holder. It even has a fabric lamp shade with fringe. Imagine how great one (or two) would look as a centerpiece on your Christmas dinner table!

The votive candle (not included) sits in the top of the lamp to provide a warm glow. Click here to order the 12-inch high “Christmas Story Leg Lamp Votive Candleholder.

* Can’t get enough of that “Leg Lamp”? Now you can put a 6-foot-high Inflatable Christmas Story Leg Lamp Decoration in your front yard or on your balcony. (Click here for details.)

* Finally, if your copy of the movie A Christmas Story is old and worn out, replace it with A Christmas Story in Blu-ray so you can enjoy Ralphie’s nostalgic adventures in the highest quality version of the movie available.

(PS: you can really buy a Red Ryder BB gun too, if you have your heart set on one.)

Can you imagine Obama as the Grinch who stole Christmas?

If you’re like millions of Americans, you probably can. Author David Hedrick is counting on it.

The Tea Party activist and would-be politician has just released a new storybook (for adults) called The Liberal Clause: Socialism on a Sleigh.

According to TIME magazine, The Liberal Clause is:

…the tale of a small town taken over by the “Liberal Party of Elves,” a pernicious band of scowling socialists led by Barack “Liberal Claus” Obama and his sidekick, Elf Peloosi.

The Portland Mercury has a less than flattering story about the book, complete with lots of pictures.

Even some fellow conservatives aren’t very impressed.

At $20, I’m not sure how many copies of The Liberal Clause author David Hedrick thinks he can sell from his website.

However, if you’re looking for a more-expensive-than-usual gag gift for the conservative, libertarian, Republican or Tea Party member on your Christmas list, this book may be something to think about.

And there’s other, unrelated, “Obama Grinch” merchandise out there to buy if you like the idea.

It seems that each year, the holidays bring not only fun and family gathering but they bring financial stress as well.

To head off this stress, it is a good idea to plan a Christmas budget now during the fall months, so that when the holiday shopping is in full swing, you won’t be stressing out over overspending.

It is a good idea to make your holiday budget comprehensive enough to include all the ways that you spend money on holiday preparations and Christmas related purchases. Here are a few ideas about how to set up your Christmas Budget.

Start early – ideally you should start in January for each holiday season. Many of us don’t think about Christmas that early.

If you are like most of us, October is when we start to think about the winter holidays. If you do start early, you can take advantage of those after Christmas sales to make purchases of holiday stables like ornaments, gift-wrap, and party supplies.

Make sure you sock some holiday savings away each month throughout the year so that you can have a Christmas Spending account that won’t dig into your regular household account during the holidays. The last thing you want is to take money away from paying your monthly bills in order to buy presents.

You can open a Christmas Club account at most financial institutions including credit unions that you can designate an amount such as $25, or $50 to come out of your paycheck each month and deposited into this Christmas fund. You can even set up auto-transfer for each pay period.

Shop for Christmas year-round. There are many sales events that you can take advantage of throughout the year, saving you money.

Make up a master-shopping list for Christmas that includes each person you need to buy gifts for along with some gift ideas. Keep this in your wallet or purse all year, so that you can refer to it while passing sales items.

Don’t forget about the values you can find online. You can comparison-shop to discover what stores have the best deals.

When actually making purchases online, don’t forget to take shipping into consideration when comparison-shopping for price.

Major stores will often have Internet discounts that are just for their online customers, so check Websites of stores that you frequent most often for these deals.

Save money by baking or making presents for relatives who may appreciate the extra thoughtfulness of these personal gifts.

There may be some people on your list who really do not need or want more “things”, but may be happy with the gift of time (running errands for them, or doing yard work, or household chores).

Keep a pocket notebook handy all year and jot down in it whenever someone mentions something they need, or something they see that they would like.

When you notice sales events of these items you can then purchase them at a savings. This handy notebook will also assure you that you are indeed buying gifts that the recipients will truly enjoy getting.

Christmas as a holiday period was instituted and celebrated at about the same time as other winter solstice festivities because church leaders at the time believed that would make more people participate in the new holiday period.

That objective was achieved, but people also carried over some pagan celebrations and traditions into the religious Christmas celebrations.

As an example, people would attend church and then take part in a raucous, drunken and carnival-like celebration, that has some similarities to Mardi Gras. During this celebration every year, there would be a crowning of a beggar or student as the ‘lord of misrule.’ Those taking part in the activities would pretend to be loyal subjects to the ‘lord of misrule,’

During this time some of the poor would also visit the rich in their houses and ask for some of their best food and drink. Those among the rich who didn’t cooperate would be subject to rowdy behavior and mischief by the poor. For their part, the rich used Christmas as the time when they would reach out to the poorer members of society by tolerating them in such visits or by leaving out food and clothing for them.

For many centuries before the birth of Christ and the recognition of Christmas, there had always been celebrations in many countries during the middle of winter.

During the darkest days of winter for example, the early Europeans were said to celebrate light and birth. The winter solstice was a period of rejoicing for many people because it meant that the worst part of winter was over and they could therefore look forward to having days that were longer with more hours of sunlight.

In that tradition, the Norse peoples in Scandinavia would celebrate a period of Yule from Dec. 21, which was the winter solstice or start of winter, through January. To recognize the re-emergence of the sun, fathers and their sons would take large logs home and set them on fire. There would then be a big feast until the log was completely burned out. That could take as much as 12 days to happen.

The custom also was one of hope for the Norse because there was the belief among them that every spark from the fire represented a new pig or calf that would be born in the New Year.

Many parts of Europe also thought that the end of December was a perfect time to celebrate because during that time, a lot of cattle would be killed to avoid having to feed them during winter.

For many people, the end of December was the only time during the year when they had a significant amount of fresh meat. By that time of year also, wine and beer that was made earlier in the year would have fermented and be finally ready for drinking.

The tradition of Santa Claus has also been an ancient legend with slight differences or variations in olden days from the 1700s in some countries.

In German and Switzerland, children who were well behaved would receive a Christmas present from Christkind or Kris Kringle. Christkind, which means Christ child, was believed to be an angel-like figure that went along with St. Nicholas on his holiday journeys to deliver gifts.

A jolly elf by the name of Jultomten was believed to deliver presents in Scandinavia in a sleigh that was pulled by goats. And in France, Pere Noel is the one who fills the shoes of French children with Christmas gifts, sweets or treats at Christmas time.

In Russia, there’s a legend that Babouschka was an elderly woman who gave incorrect directions to Bethlehem to the three Wise Men so that they wouldn’t find Jesus. She later felt sorry for doing so but couldn’t find the Wise Men to tell them about the error.

Today in Russia, it is believed that on Jan. 5, the day before the Epiphany or Three Kings Day, Babouschka visits Russian children and leaves presents by their bedsides in the hope that one of the children will be Baby Jesus and will forgive her.
