When i cast my vote for President Obama in 2008, I did so because he’s black. It may sound ignorant to you, but unlike today’s generation of youth who were forever changed by this election cycle, I know what it’s like to grow up without an Obama, without any major black public figure in your government in a position to lead the free world, where the only positive figures who look like you are a few entertainers, a few more athletes, some writers, and a few politicians who you never see until they need your vote. For a generation of not only black youth but young people of all races all over the world to see a person of color ascend into that position and have that as a source of inspiration, I would vote for Obama a million times over. but I must also say that I for one never bought the “change” line. I believed in it based on what he symbolized and the turning point that it meant in our history, but I didn’t vote for Obama with the hope that he would change our entire governing system into some utopia of free universal health care, racial equality and a thriving economy where everyone can be a billionaire in 5 years. He said all that stuff because he had to say it. He wouldn’t have gotten elected otherwise. He said it because we as Americans can’t handle the truth. We set ourselves up to be disappointed. Think about it. You’ve basically been lied to in some way shape or form for most of your life. Dumb lies, too. Like the one about the fat man who can fly with a bunch of deer around and despite his size, slides his way down your chimney (even houses that don’t have chimneys) not to rob you, but with a full bag of toys to give away, and somehow he manages to do it for everyone on earth in 8-10 hours. We like lies. We believe fairy tales. And even when we find out that they aren’t true we find new ones to latch onto and believe in because we need it. It’s the only way we can become comfortable with the nonsense that happens around us. But perhaps the biggest truth we can’t handle, the main reason why I was never entirely sold on “change” is that our government is corrupt (there isn’t a governing body on the planet that isn’t. ours is no exception). It’s not just a few people, either. It goes to the core of everything that it does. It’s not criminal or even really wrong. We force them to lie to us, otherwise, we won’t vote for them. So the idea that after all these lies that we’ve put up with and even requested in some instances that all of a sudden we expect complete truth and transparency is ridiculous. Our government tortured people. 3 people as far as we know, but possibly many others that we’ll never know about. Either way, we all kind of knew something fishy was going on the whole time. When obama released those memos, it wasn’t the first time we’d heard the words “waterboarding” or “advanced interrogation techniques.” And knowing about it, we were all, whether we admit it to ourselves or not, complicit. We may have protested and postured and shouted in drunken disgust to our friends at parties about how bad it was, but 8 years ago before there was an Iraq War or a 9/11 or torture that we knew about, there was the 2000 election when we as a country allowed George Bush and Co. to steal an election, allowed the voices like Limbaugh and Hannity to be louder than ours who screamed in protest and we let them assume the power that allowed them to do whatever they wanted against the will of the American people. Sure, we were emotional, we lost lives as a country and we needed leadership, and we sacrificed our standing in the world because of it. But to now, after that complicity turn around and say, President Obama, you fix it, you throw the bums in jail, you make this right, is like telling the kids to give Santa back their toys because Mommy and Daddy are broke and didn’t mean to spend that much. We wanted the lies. We allowed ourselves to be lied to. And now we know the price we paid. Let’s say tomorrow we decided to prosecute anyone who sanctioned torture. Where would it end? How far up the ladder would it go? How many people would the administration have to alienate, how much real legislation that would better the lives of everday americans be sacrificed because of it? I remember my father used to say in sermons that every time you point a finger, you’ve got three pointing back at you. The TRUTH is that everyone’s hands are dirty, including ours. I understand raising your voice about it, and i encourage it. THIS IS NOT A DEFENSE OF TORTURE. Trust me, I would love nothing more than to see Cheney himself in a year doing a 60 Minutes interview from Rikers Island with Leslie Stahl dressed like Glenda the Good Witch, hearing him say that he sees the error in his ways, asking for forgiveness and redemption. But that scenario sounds comical because we all know stuff like that only happens in movies and fairy tales. In real life, the “bad” guys get away with that shit. In real life, they’re not even really “bad” guys because there’s always a way to rationalize it, to say what you knew and didn’t know, to keep blurring the line between right and wrong so much so that it’s almost not even there, giving you free reign to navigate around it in any way you want. That’s the reason why we repeat the cliche of the “bad” guy whose brought to justice in our folklore, because we need that escape from the our grim reality where his fate isn’t decided by justice, but by circumstance. We don’t have a monarchy in America, but we do have royalty. We do have classes. And because of that certain people will never go to jail, no matter what they do or what laws they break. And the sooner we stop lying to ourselves thinking that our current justice system is actually just enough to send the right people to jail all the time, the sooner we stop allowing ourselves to be lied to by these criminals in the first place, allowing them to lobby and pander and convince us that their actions are in our interests instead of their own, only then can we start to close some of these loopholes they seemlessly navigate through and start working on the laws to not only make sure that torture never happens again, but to also ensure that our government works to better the lives of as many Americans as possible.
