What makes a costume offensive?

What’s that you say, Halloween is coming up and what does that imply? Someone will metaphorically get themselves in a bind by wearing an insensitive or outright racist costume. It’s all fun and games in private, But at public office parties, You need to think about what your going to wear and how other people around you will take it.

Costumes you should avoid this year are:

– Anything blackface related

– Any costumes that make fun of other races, cultures, or religions

– Any costumes that make fun of people with disabilities or mental illnesses.

This Halloween just remember, People will be tired of political correctness by 2021 so have fun at the party but don’t go out of your way to be offensive or insensitive like the good old days!

For anybody who is unsure if a possible Halloween costume would be insulting, here are six questions to ask yourself to avoid offending another person or group of people.

1. Is there any makeup in my costume that would make me appear to be a member of a disadvantaged group who is not part of my race? This refers to blackface or extensive bronzer usage, as specified for clarity.

2. Is my costume insensitive to people of other cultures? That’s a no-no for Pocahontas costumes or the problematic Mexican-theme Tequila Bandito, among other things.

3. Is there a possibility that my costume will contain sacred clothes, depictions or motifs from a religion that is not my own?

4. Is my costume offensive to any group of real people?

5. Is dressing up as a clown mocking real people’s suffering? In this area, costumes may include victims or perpetrators of major events such as school shootings and sexual assaults. I must emphasize that no Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting or #MeToo-themed fancy dress is permitted.

6. Last but not least, is my costume in some way favorable to Nazism? Nazis are bad, as are other hate groups like the KKK and racist skinheads, so don’t unwittingly support or promote them by converting their ideas into costumes.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, there’s a good chance your costume might offend someone.

Save those particular costumes for the private after-party, We aren’t the fun police, but we do want to think about the wide variety of people around us who may be easily offended.

The truth is, there are an endless supply of fun, creative and non-offensive costumes to wear, and you should have no problem at all choosing something that you will enjoy wearing!

It’s admirable to want to save your wedding bouquet for sentimental reasons, but planning is required and there are multiple options available on how to preserve a wedding bouquet.

This article will teach you those methods, let’s get started!

Prepperation for preserving your wedding bouqet

First thing’s first, The prep needs to start long before the tossing of the bouquet. You don’t want to be tossing the real thing into a crowd below. Instead, find a cheaper replica bouquet made with silk flowers and filler to throw. The fake will be just as beautiful but you won’t have to worry about damaging the original, or losing it entirely to a greedy half-drunk wedding guest! It’s also one less thing to worry about.

Flowers are cut days before your wedding day. If you want to keep your bouquet looking fresh, consider having a few flowers replaced the morning of – or even better yet – the night before.

Many florists will do last-minute cuttings if requested for such purposes. They may even make a second batch if you want a backup.

However, do not count on this as flowers tend to flow in from all over the world and may be unable to accommodate such a request due to time restraints. It never hurts to ask!

Now that you have your flowers preped, It’s time to preserve your bouquet!

There are multiple ways you can do this. Here are the most common ones.

The old fasion drying method

If you want an easier way to preserve your wedding bouquet without special supplies or expertise, consider air-drying it. This option is the best way to keep its whole shape, although the flowers will diminish slightly in size and color over time. Here’s how to air-dry your wedding bouquet:

• Remove leaves, greenery, petals and anything that is brown or decaying.
• After that, tie a piece of twine, string or yarn around the stems and secure it with either rubber band if you have one.
• Hang the bouquet upside down in a dry, dark spot for 1-2 weeks where it won’t be disturbed. Be sure to keep the flowers away from areas with lots of activity or bright lights (such as kitchen pantries). Make sure kids and animals can’t get to them. Cat’s will destroy it!
• Wait at least two weeks before removing the flowers from your arrangement, although it can take up to a month or more for them to dry out completely.

Once everything is fully dry, You can put it into a plexiglass or glass display case to preserve it, show it off, and keep it safe.

Freeze Drying your bouquet to preserve it

Not everyone has access to a $2000 freeze dryer, So this method isn’t for everyone. Although you may be able to find a professional in your area or someone with a freeze dryer you can hire to do this for you.

While it’s the most expensive option on this list, it’s also the best for preserving the whole bouquet and its color and size.

In fact, Freeze drying is so effective, You won’t see much of any change at all, and you will preserve that moment in time almost perfectly.

Preserving your bouquet in a block of resin

If you don’t have a freeze dryer, another option is to preserve your bouquet in resin.

You can buy kits to do it yourself at home, but if you want the job done right I recommend finding a professional and paying for the job.

This method will keep the color and size of your flowers almost perfect.

Just buy a bucket of the epoxy mix (it’s only a few bucks for enough to fill the bucket),

Mix it as directed and pour it into your mold. Then place your bouquet inside, brace it so you don’t get any bubbles, and let it dry.

Once dried (It takes 24 hours to fully cure) You can keep your bouquet on display almost forever!

To make a mold, just hot glue some clear plastic squares into a big box. Be sure it’s nice and secure so the epoxy doesn’t leak out during the pour.

Pour carefully to avoid air bubbles.

Once dried and cured, you can take out your bouquet. It will be as hard as glass. Today’s epoxy has a pretty good shelf life too (I know from experience), so you don’t need to worry about it turning back into goo years down the road.

Once it’s cured, peel away the mold and give it a finished polish.

What to do with dried wedding bouquet?

You can also use a preserved bouquet to decorate other things. For instance, you could put it on display in an art piece or craft project.

The flowers will stay good forever and look lovely whatever you do with them.

Your dried wedding bouquet can make lovely crafts as well!

People have used dried flowers for jewelry, wreaths, wall hangings, flower arrangements, etc. And they’ll last decades and decades.

Many people keep their dried bouquets in decorative vases filled with sand! This is especially nice if you like beachy settings or the rustic look of nature.

And there you have it! Those are all the different ways to preserve your wedding bouquet.

For those of you who want a less expensive way to keep your flowers, You can sell or give them away as well, To family and friends for instance. Your preserved bouquet could be worth hundreds of dollars if done right.

I’ve even heard about some people injecting chemicals into the stems to make them last longer (gasp!) But I would not recommend this, since too much moisture actually causes bacteria growth which can ruin flowers over time anyway. That’s why these other methods are preferred.

This process takes time and patience, so be patient and follow your bouquet preservation tutorials carefully to have the best chance of success.

This article will go into how to preserve your carved pumpkin for the entire month of October and defeat the spoiling of your pumpkin!

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to completely stop your pumpkin from rotting away because the decaying process starts almost immediately. But there are some things you can do to slow down the enzyme process and save your pumpkin for longer!

Make sure you get the best pumpkin from the store, to begin with

Luckily you starting early so there should be a great selection for sale near you. Look for one that is most firm and feels heavy for its size Pick a good shape too because they do tend to rot faster than normal pumpkins

Make sure there are no soft spots anywhere to be seen, Don’t be shy, poke that pumpkin all over, If there’s one soft spot then that means the enzymes are already in play and your pumpkin is starting to go bad

Make sure you get a carving knife too, Or else you’re just going to have a plain old pumpkin if you don’t already have one. Here is one I personally recommend this kit.

It comes with a whole set, how cool is that?

2. Gut the pumpkin so they don’t bring the entire thing down!

Gut rot faster than the fruit itself because the enzymes are constantly exposed, which in turn causes the rest of the pumpkin to start to decay.

So once you’ve finished cutting it open, You really need to remove every single last pumpkin gut you can find.

So get yourself a spoon or anything that can scoop out the insides of your pumpkin and do so! The less contact to the inside of the pumpkin means the fewer chances for it to rot away.

And don’t forget to save those seeds, salt them and cook some pumpkin seeds! It is one of my favorite things ever. The salty crunch is just the best! I love this time of year!

3. Seal your pumpkin from the air with a layer of wax or petroleum jelly

You have 2 options here, You can use petroleum jelly or wax, whichever you find easier. Personally, I’ve used both and they are about equal, and petroleum jelly is far easier to apply.

How does it work?

It works by preventing the oxygen from touching your pumpkin, which in turn prevents the enzymes from doing their dirty work.

So once you have finished gutting your pumpkin, It’s time to seal it up!

Wait until after gutting and cutting though because if you do this before it has been cleaned out or carved then there’s a chance that it will spoil faster or your hands could slip and give you a nasty cut.

First, make sure your hands are nice and clean, and apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or wax (I personally use Vaseline).

It doesn’t matter what side you do first so just pick one, Doesn’t matter really. I find it best to start on the bottom and work my way up top.

I apply a thick layer all over the pumpkin and until it’s completely sealed up.

If you use wax, I suggest orange wax!

It’s tightly sealed in so there’s no way for oxygen to get through. The enzymes can’t get at the inside of your pumpkin and start doing their thing! This method will keep your jack-o-lantern looking fresh for weeks!

4. When you’re not using it, Put it in the fridge

It’s always better to bring your pumpkin in during the day so the sun doesn’t damage it. Even if you have it in the strong shade, I suggest you do this regardless.

When you do, Put it in the fridge.

Doing this will slow down the enzyme process and slow down the decaying of your pumpkin significantly. This is especially important if you are going to be taking it out for more than a day as leaving it out increases decay time by at least 3x!

Not only do they look beautiful in the house, but they also release a wonderful scent that will proliferate every room of the house.

How to preserve rose petals short-term

Sometimes you just need to keep roses and petals preserved for a day or two.  The best way to do this is by simply placing the roses and petals you have in a jar with some water.  Just make sure to change out the water every day, so that it doesn’t go bad.

In fact, if your flowers are fresh enough, you can actually enjoy these preserved rose petals for up to a week.  So if you have an upcoming event and want flowers for decoration, this is a great way to go about it.

However, sometimes it’s not possible, especially for roses without stems. In that case, You want to place them in a bag (or wrap them in magazine pages) and then place them in the fridge.  They will last about as long as normal flowers would.

Some tips to remember when storing rose petals: Place them in a way they won’t be deformed.  The best way to do this is by simply allowing them to lay as they are inside a jar filled with water.

Store rose petals in the fridge without squashing them by gently wrapping them in paper or a bag.

They should be stored in a dark place. Don’t place your petals or flowers in direct sunlight as this will cause them to wilt and lose their wonderful fragrance.

How to preserve rose petals long-term

Long-term storage options are much different than short-term storage options.

However, if you need your roses and rose petals for decoration, they will need to be dried out. The best way to do this is by using silica gel packets, which you can find at your local flower shop.  You’ll want to place these in the bottom of a box or container, and then place your roses on top.

You may also add another layer of silica on top by taking care not to damage or squash the flower.

Remember you need to be able to take it out in one piece too.

For exact instructions with silica drying method:

1. To preserve your dried rose petals, place an inch of silica gel at the bottom of a moisture-proof container. Then, add the petals to this container.
2. Add more silica gel until the flowers are completely covered. Seal the jar, and place it out of reach of children or pets. (SILICA WILL POISON ANIMALS AND PEOPLE, PLEASE TAKE CARE)
3. To dry flowers properly, the petals should be removed after being allowed to sit for 2-7 days. Larger and more moist petals will require a longer drying time.

Borax Method instruction

Maybe you don’t have access to silica gel, or you don’t want to risk poisoning your pets and children. If that’s the case, don’t worry as you definitely can dry them out with the borax method. Borax is completely harmless in small doses!

This is a simple and easy way to dry your flowers while maintaining their shape and fragrance!

1. Sift the borax to remove debris and lumps. After removing all lumps, add sand and mix it with 2 parts borax to 1 part fine sand.
2. Line the bottom of your container with half an inch of borax and sand mixture. Then, add the rose petals and cover them completely with more borax and sand. Be gentle to keep the shape.
3. It takes 14-17 days for the roses in your open container to dry completely.

How to preserve rose petals with cat litter

To preserve petals in a dry environment, dust-free cat litter will serve as an adequate alternative to silica gel. Layer the container with 1 inch of cat litter and then place the rose petals followed by another half-inch layer of cat litter. Seal the container for 2-7 days before removing it from the set space.

Needless to say, if you have a cat, put the container somewhere where she won’t use it! It’s only natural!

Preserving rose petals in the oven or dehydrator

The dehydrator method is super easy, Just place the petals or full roses on the dehydrating racks in a dehydrator. Run the dehydrator until they are nice and dry.

Remember to let them cool first before deciding if they are finished, as warm will feel dry when they aren’t really.

Drying the roses in the oven. The most efficient method to dry out petals is using an oven. To begin, heat your oven to 180 degrees Fahrenheit and monitor the petals by placing them on parchment paper or a baking sheet for 3 hours.

1. To dry the petals, arrange them in a single layer on a sheet pan and make sure they are not touching.
2. Place the cookie sheet in the oven, but remember to leave the door open. Otherwise, you could end up cooking them! This should take about 3 hours.
3. Leave the tray in a safe place overnight. By morning, there should barely be any moisture on the flowers.

TIP: If you’re not in a hurry, you can place the sheet pan outside overnight. On a breezy day and with temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the sun will do all the work for you!

Seal and save.

You’re finished, now enjoy your dried roses!

You may opt to dry them with silica gel or cat litter, dehydrate them using an oven or a dehydrator, seal and save them in airtight containers like jars or plastic bags- whatever method is best suited for you and your needs will work just fine.

Plastic owls are the highest on this list because they are the most effective bird deterrent you can buy. We had a problem with pigeons and starlings in our garden so we went shopping to find the most effective product and found that plastic barn owls are your best bet for scaring birds. If you get one that is life-size then it really looks threatening compared to the small 100mm versions which have no significance, but if placed correctly they will drive any bird away from your area out of fear.

After visiting many different garden centers were able to see a trend where these little bells do work very well at keeping birds out of your garden by frightening them as well as giving them a horrible screeching noise that can get very annoying. They do come in many sizes, so you might want to go for one of the larger ones if you have birds such as pigeons or starlings. 

3. Scarecrow

A scarecrow is a very simple piece of garden equipment to use as it doesn’t involve any electrical equipment and you can put almost anything on top. A huge variety of people like to make and put their own scarecrows in the garden.

They don’t just scare crows away, but can also frighten other types of birds. You can make it as gory and scary as you like, or maybe paint a face on a normal clothes peg to keep the birds away from your plants. If you’re looking for something that is easy to make then this one is right up your street!

You should also consider moving it around every couple of days in your yard so it catches the birds off guard. Don’t forget our feathery friends are quite intelligent.

4. Bird Spikes

Bird spikes are a great deterrent to keeping birds from nesting in unwanted areas. They are spikes with either pointy or rounded ends which prevents the birds from being able to nest in that location.

Generally, they don’t harm birds, but they could be considered cruel in the sense that they can cause damage to birds’ wings and legs.

Be sure not to use these if you have owls in your area, as they are a protected species and it is illegal! This goes for all endangered birds. You could wake up with a fine!

These noises are designed to scare animals away from your area without hurting them. You can find these as downloadable files on various websites from simple birds chirping noises to dingoes howling. 6. Spray Them With Water

This trick works great especially if you have a lot of pigeons or starlings that like to land near/on your plants. A hose pipe with a high-pressure nozzle attached can work wonders. Just start spraying them with water and they will be scared off. This same trick can also work on many other bird pests too.

This is a great option if you have no money to spend, but something that may take a little more time than the owls or scarecrow. If you don’t want the hassle of buying a spray bottle then just use your hose!

7. Wind Chimes

If this sounds like something out of Harry Potter then it’s not. Wind chimes are designed to scare birds away from your garden by making various different noises when they clang together in the wind. You can buy these for very cheap as well which is great considering there not expensive to make yourself either! These go down really well in summer, as you can put one next to your pool or outdoor area where birds like to hang out and it will certainly get rid of them!

The sharp noise from the tinkling chimes is enough to scare most small birds away, but if not then something a little more aggressive needs to be done.

8. Terror Eyes Baloons

These have been very popular in recent years and are a great way to scare some birds away from your garden. They work by dangling them around your plants and anything else that you don’t want the crows or pigeons getting to, so it will frighten them simply because of how they look!

They can be found in many different themes, so if you don’t like the look of these bats or owls then just search for something more fitting for your own style.

In fact, they are actually quite popular with children as well who tend to enjoy playing with them after they have served their purpose. Just make sure that nothing gets caught up on a string connecting the balloon to its anchor point as this could cause injury.

He seems to be very good at scaring off rats and even killing them – he occasionally brings their dead bodies back to us as a gift! Even possums don’t seem brave enough to hang around when they see him coming!

If you do decide to get a dog then make sure that you train him properly from an early age. Dogs are the best way to naturally keep away any pesky little garden birds but will need training just like anything else in your life!

10. Get A Cat

Just like a dog, a cat can be used to scare away birds in your garden. However, unlike a dog, You are farm more likely to wake up with a dead bird on your doorstep. Cat’s sure love bloodshed.

Just like small dogs, cats can also be used as a natural pest control. They are seen by smaller animals like squirrels and rats as predators, so they will keep their distance when around any cat (and in the case of birds – flying away). This makes some cats quite good at keeping pests away from your property while they are out roaming around!

11. Garden Spinners

These are usually ideal for hanging from trees and are found in many different styles. Some of them carry UV lights which scare birds even more! These could really come in handy for deterring any small birds that like to nest on your property while you sleep at night.

Be warned though – some spinners can be quite noisy so pick one out with this in mind! How annoying would it be if it kept spinning all the time? Hearing a clicking noise all day long just wouldn’t cut it…

12. Anything Reflective

Old CDs, mirrors, tin foil, Christmas ornaments, glass globes… The list could go on forever. All you have to do is hang it up near your garden and watch as the birds are scared away by the random bursts of light being scattered around from the wind.

The idea is that the birds fly into these objects and are startled by them. It could have the opposite effect though – especially on larger birds. they may see it as something worth investigating, rather than just taking off..

13. Motion Sensor Noisemaker

Compact but powerful motion sensor-activated sounds frighten all birds including Blackbirds, Woodpeckers, Magpies, Sparrows, Crows & Blue Tits, etc. Motion sensitive with adjustable sensitivity settings. Will cover an area of 150ft radius.

A motion sensor noisemaker is a great way to scare the birds away. They are activated by any movement (so even just someone walking in your garden can trigger it) and will make an incredibly loud noise that should chase anything away in seconds!

The only downside with this method is that they have to be manually turned off again, or you’ll trap yourself out at night with the sound going off every time you walk past it!

14. Motion Activated Sprinklers

These are made for keeping dogs out of your garden, but do double duty by keeping birds from roosting as well. Water scares them because of their natural aversion to getting wet and makes them quickly move on in search of another area to settle down. So when the sprinkler is set off they will try to avoid it at all costs and move on!

The biggest downside to this type of deterrent is that you have to remember to turn them off again before you go out into your garden. This can be quite tricky sometimes as leaving them on for too long could start to cause some unwanted flooding…

You should also consider if your area has any water restrictions in place as many states do these days, and only allow low-flow sprinklers to be used.

15. Remove Bird Friendly Garden Ornaments

If your set on keeping birds out, why would you invite them in with a nice bird bath or bird feeder? They are an easy way of attracting birds to your garden and once they get settled in, it will become very difficult to remove them.

If you can’t remove the bird bath or feeders, at least try to cover them up with a plastic bag. This will help reduce the number of curious birds who come over just for a drink of water or something to eat!

16. Bird Repellents

There are some things that you may not have thought of before which can be used as bird repellents:

Hanging Yellow Socks – Apparently, these scare birds because they think there is a predator in their territory (the odd Yellow bird perhaps?)! By hanging them on bushes and trees near areas where birds like to perch, you can ward them off.

Radio – Don’t use the radio to scare birds away (at least not while you’re in the garden), but tune it into static instead! This will create white noise which won’t attract birds at all (apart from maybe a few brain-damaged individuals) and they will see it as an unnatural sound.

17. Cover your garden in netting

If birds eating your garden and berries is the reason for concern, the best thing you can do is cover it up!

Covering your garden with nets will completely prevent them from eating anything. If you’re lucky, they might decide to just fly around and not bother hanging out in your yard at all!

The netting will allow sunlight in, but will also stop the birds from landing on anything, so they won’t be able to land and tear up berries from branches.

The downside is that it can look quite ugly, and you may not like having your garden covered by a net… but if it’s very effective then why not!

On the bright side, If you ever get too much sun, different-sized nets can be used to avoid plant burn, or if you’d like your garden to be less shady for other plants, then simply take it down!

Netting comes in all shapes and sizes, but the bigger you go, the more birds will still get through (and probably poke their heads right into your garden too) so bear this in mind before buying. Also, remember that different species of birds are noticeably bigger than others (eg Robins vs Starlings), so stick with large nets if they are a common nuisance pest!

18. Garden Fleece

Using garden fleece as a shield can be a good idea if your garden is already covered in netting as it will stop birds from landing directly on your plants and berries.

Using fleece can also be much cheaper than buying berry guards for every plant you have, but don’t expect it to solve all problems!

1. Save money by buying clothes at thrift stores

2. Eat breakfast at home and save money instead of buying out

3. Use coupons for groceries and other items when shopping

4. Get a part-time job or work over the summer to make extra cash

5. Learn about credit cards, how they work, and what interest rates mean before applying for one

6. Make sure you’re not spending more than you can afford – don’t charge more than $200 on your card in a month unless it’s an emergency!

7. If you have debt, pay off your highest-interest loan first  (this will save you the most amount of money)

8. If you buy something on sale, save the receipt so you can return it if it’s not what you wanted

9. Don’t borrow money from friends or family unless absolutely necessary  (they’re more likely to have hidden charges and interest rates than a bank)

10. Avoid payday loans at all costs – they’ll end up costing you more in the long run!

11. Set goals for saving money – say $3000 by your next birthday or graduation! This will help motivate you and keep you motivated toward saving money!

12. If there are things/places that seem like splurges but really aren’t (ie: fast food, movie theater), only go when it is an event like a birthday or a holiday movie.

13. Keep cash around for impromptu shopping trips – it can be quicker than using your credit card and you won’t spend as much money!

14. If you get paid every two weeks, open a separate checking account that has only what you need to pay bills for the month in it. The rest of your paycheck goes straight to savings or investing if possible! This will force you to not overspend! (This is also good for creating some accountability!)

15. If there is something that you really want but can wait for, put it on your Christmas list and see if anyone buys it for you, or ask friends/family if they would mind getting it for you as their gift.

16. Cut out things you don’t really need in your life like soda, fast food, energy drinks, eating out, smoking, etc.  These can add up to hundreds of dollars a month!

17. Keep an eye on what you spend your money on – if you bought something and it’s still in the bag/box when you get home from the store or wherever else you bought it from (price tag included!), that’s likely because it wasn’t a NEED item but more of a WANT item. Think about these purchases before you make them next time! Have fun with this process though; remember that spending money is not necessarily bad if used wisely!.

18. If there is an item that costs too much for what it is, don’t buy it — find a better deal or wait for the item to go on sale!

19. Set a goal for yourself with regards to saving money – this could be $50 in your account by next month! When you’re working toward accomplishing something like that, you’ll feel more motivated and less likely to spend money carelessly and impulsively.

20. If buying used items is an option (ie: furniture, electronics), always opt for these! You can find fantastic deals at places like Craigslist and eBay.

21. Read all consumer-related literature provided at businesses before making purchases of any kind – usually, there are small things you can do to save money when purchasing something!

22. Look at every possible place you could save money: gym memberships, cable/internet providers, shopping around for better interest rates on loans and credit cards, lowering your insurance rates…  There are countless ways to save money!

23. Explore a few different job opportunities – look at what the benefits packages will be like and find out what salary would be best for you.

24. If it’s an option, go with a cash-back rewards credit card – these usually give you anywhere from 2% to 5% cashback on every purchase! This is great because in addition to getting some of your own money back when using the card, it encourages responsible spending habits (and much less impulse buying).

25. Always pay your bills on time. Late payments will result in additional fees and interest which you will have to pay for later!

26. If there’s a new store or restaurant opening up nearby, check out their loyalty program – these are usually an incentive to come back and make repeat purchases!

27. If possible, ask family members and friends if they would be willing to help you save money by watching the things you buy while you’re shopping – typically, they will be more conscious about it.

28. If you are not okay with your salary and work environment, talk to your boss or the HR department about it. Sometimes, companies will offer incentives if several employees are willing to take on a new role/responsibility.

30. So many things we buy have expiration dates on them – make sure you know what yours are so that you don’t end up throwing away money! On that same note, just because it says past expiration doesn’t always make it so!

31. Try to avoid impulse buys;  things like candy, gum, and fresh-baked goods usually aren’t good for our health (and henceforth not always the best things to spend your hard-earned cash on).

32. If there is an item that costs too much for what it is, don’t buy it — find a better deal or wait for the item to go on sale!

33. Buy cheaper alternatives of products when possible – for example: if you’re going grocery shopping and want to get shampoo/conditioner, consider opting out of buying this expensive brand name one in favor of a different kind from another company.

34. If you’re not using them, sell your old items to get some cash back! This could be anything from clothes to toys/electronics.

35. Look up free events that may be in your area – these can range from farmers markets and concerts to plays or sporting events, etc. Going to something like this is a lot cheaper than spending money on a movie night; along with it being significantly better for the community too!

36. Pizza does not have to be something you eat all the time ;  try making it at home instead of buying takeout – there are tons of recipes available online! This is also good because it encourages cooking (and eating) healthier meals — always a plus when trying to save money!

37. Cut your own hair or trim it with a pair of scissors if you’re okay with having a less-curled look to it – this can save you up to $100/month depending on how often you get your haircut and what type of styling you like doing!

38. If you have any skills, consider teaching them in exchange for payment;  from sewing lessons to guitar lessons and beyond, there are all kinds of things that people would be willing to pay for in order to become better at! (This is also good because it gives one something productive to do when bored!)

39. Don’t throw away perfectly good items just because they don’t work anymore – along with selling them online or locally , always consider donating them to a place that would be willing to repair and/or reuse these items. (This is good for you, the environment, and your wallet!)

40. Rely on public transportation as much as possible;  it’s free after all! Not only this but buses/trains usually come more frequently than cars do thus saving time trying to organize rides or get somewhere in a hurry.

41. If you’re feeling ambitious, try making some of your own cleaning products – there are many guides online that can teach people how to do so themselves with natural household ingredients, just be sure not to make anything deadly! Always look it up before mixing chemicals.

42. See if any of your local businesses offer rewards programs – oftentimes, when we spend money at these places, we do so without a second thought but this could be a great way to save some money! You’ll find deals being offered to you along with maybe even earning free food or discounts on items.

43. Always look for coupons before shopping anywhere – the internet is a wonderful place and likely has many of these available online, sometimes directly from the store itself.  It will definitely pay off in the long run!

44. If you’re cooking something that requires milk/eggs/etc., try making it using something else like rice, soy/almond milk, or water – not only does this taste just as good (maybe better) but it will also reduce costs significantly!

45. Unplug electronics when they aren’t in use or buy battery-operated versions – not only does this save electricity, but it also prolongs the life of these items. (It’s a win-win!)

46. Pack your own lunch instead of buying something from a restaurant during the week – it’s healthier for you and will save a lot of money!  Make sure to double check what is on sale at the grocery store though prior to going; this may allow for some cheaper options.

In the winter, protecting your plants from cold temperatures can be a difficult task. There are many ways to do this, but one of the most popular is to use a greenhouse. Greenhouses protect your plants from harsh conditions while still allowing them enough light and air circulation to grow healthy. Without electricity or heaters, it can be difficult for greenhouses in colder climates to keep their environment warm enough for plant growth.

Luckily there are some solutions that can help you keep your greenhouse warm without the need for electricity.

How To Heat A Greenhouse Without Electricity

Using the sun to heat circulated water & Thermal mass barrels

Thermal mass barrels are filled with water, sand, and rocks. This combination of materials helps maintain a steady temperature for your plants even when the outside temperatures fluctuate. They will radiate heat back to the greenhouse when it starts to become colder.

The simplest way to leverage this natural solution is by positioning one or two thermal mass barrels next to your greenhouses foundation around 12-24 inches from the ground so that it can absorb radiant energy coming off of the earth surface as well as solar radiation while also cooling down at night time.

Thermal mass barrels aren’t the only thing that can retain heat. You can also use old tires filled with sand, stones, and water. Fill them up to the point where they are about two-thirds full and then lay them inside in a way that provides as much surface area exposed to sunlight as possible during daylight hours.

Bricks and large stones also work well for this purpose. And remember, painting your thermal mass a darker color will cause it to absorb far more solar radiation.

No matter what thermal mass method you choose, it’s a critical component of your greenhouse heating strategy when there is no electricity on hand. Heck even if you have electricity. Save a bundle.

An underground greenhouse

If you live in colder climates, you can sink your greenhouse, or build a semi-underground greenhouse instead of a traditional southern greenhouse. This is used far often in the north to keep plants from freezing and to help make it easier to climate control the greenhouse.

Haveing it partially dug into the ground creates a huge layer of insulation that will help retain heat. It also acts as a large natural thermal mass and allowing all that heat to flow back into the greenhouse.

There are several varieties of these, including digging them into the side of a hill. The main idea is the deeper they are, the more heat retention they have as well as the more consistent the temperature is. And the temperature underground is always above freezing!

That makes it much easier to warm up and keep it warmed up than a traditional greenhouse.

Adding several small composting bins around your greenhouse

If you’ve ever composted before, You know how hot those compost bins can actually get! A couple of strategically placed around your greenhouse can provide a little extra heat and humidity.

At above 100F, not only are you creating what amounts to a natural furnace, but you also get all sorts of awesome free fertilizer you can use on your plants.

This method does require a bit more maintenance though. It’s not as hands-off as other methods, but it certainly has its benefits.

Make sure it’s insulated properly

The most important thing to retaining the heat you generated already is to keep the greenhouse well insulated. For example, If you live in the northern hemisphere, The sun will never rise on the north face of your greenhouse.

You can turn that entire wall into a black heat-retaining mass and really make use of that extra space.

All the crevices and corners should be blocked off with proper greenhouse insulation to prevent cold air from getting in, or not air from escaping.

What’s the point of all the effort you went through if a simple thing like cold air can pull all your heat out in an instant?

Solar greenhouse heaters are an excellent choice if you want to heat your greenhouse without electricity, Although they may not be considered budget-friendly.

You can put these solar panels in the south-facing wall of your house so they absorb as much sunlight as possible so it can heat the inside of the greenhouse during nighttime hours. Combined with proper insulation and thermal mass, these are fantastic and will do the job in just about any geographical area that has a cold winter season.

Another thing you could use is a solar water heater.

A solar water heater can be used as a supplemental heating option for greenhouses that are well-insulated. Simply circulating the hot water threw out pipes laid in the ground and from above will keep it nice and toasty for your plants.

A simple small wood stove

A simple small wood stove should be more than enough to heat a well-insulated greenhouse. There are several drawbacks, however: upkeep, smoke, and the need for an active fire all day.

Another option that people choose to use is this small propane heater. This type of heating system will provide you with a lot of heat and will not emit smoke if the system is properly set up.

You won’t need to continually go back and forth to add wood or other fuel if it’s connected to a large canister. You’ll have more control over how much heat you want as well, so if you’re worried about overheating inside then just turn down the heater.

However, propane heaters can create some unsafe conditions for your greenhouse, such as carbon monoxide. A properly installed exhaust system and a way to circulate the air is an absolute must. You should also have a carbon monoxide detector installed if you decide to go the gas route.

In conclusion, there are a lot of ways to heat a greenhouse without electricity. One of the easiest options is to use a solar powered electric heater, which will provide you with a lot of hours before needing more power.
