As a mother of three rough and tumble boys fighting stains is a never-ending battle. I think the hardest stains to try to get out are the grass stains. But the odor – that knocks MY socks off! I’m scared when I think about how horrible its going to be when they are teenagers!

Oscar really loved Captain Underpants and the Revolting Revenge of the Radioactive Robo-Boxers!  He read the entire book in two days!  He really likes the cartoon pictorials and the really awesome illustrations.  He also likes that this book includes Flip-O-Rama’s which when flipped quickly back and forth it makes the illustrations turn into one animated picture!  A very cool addition in this mom’s opinion too.

February 11th is Clean Out Your Computer Day!  What a great idea to have a day dedicated to reminding us about cleaning out old files and running performance checks on our computers.  Sponsored by the Institute for Business Technology, Clean Out Your Computer Day has been in existence since 2000.  It falls on the second Monday of February each year.

One of my best friends is pregnant with her first baby.  I have to say, this friend is absolutely clueless when it comes to preparing for the birth of her baby.  She is the last one of my friends that I would ever expect to get pregnant.  Thankfully she has me, veteran mom of three, to help her navigate the rough waters of being a new mommy.

There are so many products available to new parents and when you have absolutely no idea what you need it can be tough to decide which items are right for you when sticking to a budget.  Since I have tons of experience with what babies need my friend immediately starting picking my brain about all the items she needs to have before her baby arrives.  She wants to be prepared yet she also doesn’t want to buy items that she won’t have a need for during first six months.

While going over everything on the monstrous check off sheet of new baby must haves, she posed a question about child safety gates.  Are child safety gates really necessary?  Should they be on the must have list or could they wait on purchasing one? Do they even need one?

This is a great question!  I think that most people will find that a child safety gate is a necessity.  It varies from family to family so some need one right away and others can wait.  Some may do fine without one at all.  It really just depends on your living situation in my opinion.  If you own a pet, such as a dog, you probably want good safety gates on your must have list before baby is born.  That way you can utilize it for separating your child from your pet when need be.  Believe me, there will be times that you want them separated.

If you don’t have a pet but you have stairs or other areas in your home that are not child friendly you may not need a gate right away but you should have one before the baby starts crawling.  Unfortunately I experienced this the hard way.  My husband hated placing the gate at the top of our stairs and kept putting it off.  One day I literally watched my 9 month old tumble down the stairs and even though I was only a couple of feet away I wasn’t able to catch him before he went down.  It was an awful sight to see and an awful feeling as a mother.  Luckily, my baby was okay after the fall.  But it was one of the worst days of my life!  All which could have been prevented if our safety gate was in place.

So, in my opinion, child safety gates are extremely important if there are dangerous areas in your home or if you have pets.  The biggest thing to remember is that once they start crawling babies get into anything and everything in their way.  It’s important to childproof as much as possible in order to avoid unwanted harm coming to your baby.  One of the best suggestions I have is to crawl around your home on your hands and knees to see what your child will see and look for possible dangers.  Any thing that you find that you wouldn’t want your baby to be exposed to should be placed out of reach or made off limits.

Ultimately you have to decide what’s best for your family.  I strongly urge the use of safety gates because prevention is the key to keeping our children safe.

In our household we are very into games, whether they are on one of our many gaming systems or played on our iPad, iPods or iPhone, we just can’t get enough of them!  I think that for all of us playing games is our way of relaxing and tuning out the real world going on around us.  My boys play tons of games – I mean TONS and TONS of games.  Being boys they are highly competitive with each other too.  They are always trying to out do each other by getting the highest score, most coins, extra gear or whatever the case may be depending upon which game they are playing.

But I can’t really fault them because they must get it from me.

I may not be into to as many video games as they are but I am definitely into all the fun gaming apps for my iPhone.  My favorite apps always include a bit of competition too.  I like playing random opponents and kicking their butts!  I will play for hours at a time sometimes just back and forth with some stranger trying to beat them at whatever game I’m playing.  My recent favorites include SongPop, Scramble With Friends and Monopoly.  My all time favorite game to play for hours is Bejeweled Blitz though. 

I can play Bejeweled Blitz forever – or until my hand cramps – whichever comes first!  But I think I love it the most because it’s linked up to Facebook and I get to compete against my Facebook friends that play it too.  Every week I make it my life’s mission to get the highest score of all my friends.  It’s time consuming but oh so rewarding when I come out victorious!  It’s my favorite way of relieving stress.  Little do my friends know that once I beat their high scores I’m doing my “IN YOUR FACE!” victory dance.

I even go as far as to capture a picture once I beat one of my friends scores and text it to them.  I have no shame.  To the right is an actual image of one of my highest scores that I have gotten – and texted to my competition – while playing Bejeweled Blitz.  I’m so proud cause it’s hard to get that high of a score in just 60 seconds!  Believe me, I know, I’ve got problems

As part of my resolution to eat healthier I have been looking for ways to add more fruits and vegetables into my meals.  To be honest I have always preferred fresh or frozen vegetables but some times I don’t have time to run to the store and it would be really convenient to take advantage of what canned fruits and vegetables have to offer.  I was sent some canned fruits and vegetables from Del Monte and I was pleasantly surprised with flavor and quality.

Spicy Black Bean Garden Salsa

Ingredients

1 can of black beans

1/2 can of Del Monte canned corn

1/2 can of Del Monte diced tomatoes

1/2 a tablespoon of Chili Powder

1 teaspoon of Ground Cumin

1 teaspoon of Crushed Red Pepper Flakes

1/4 of a large onion diced (optional)

Directions

In a medium saucepan combine all ingredients and stir over medium heat for approximately 10 minutes.  Stir occasionally on low heat until ready to serve.

This dish makes a great side and it also tastes great with tortilla chips as a salsa.

This year our school district adopted a 4 day school week so every Friday my kids are home with me.  I have been looking for ways to entertain the boys that occupy their minds, inspire creativity and that will also be enjoyable for them as well.  Crayola has some really great new products that do exactly that!  Over the last month the boys and I have been playing with the Crayola Marker Airbrush and the Crayola Digital Light Designer.  All three boys have tons of fun which is really impressive considering their ages span from 4-9.

The other exciting Crayola product we have been playing with is the Light Designer.  The boys love the magic of drawing with lights!  At first it’s a little more complicated to figure out but after you get the hang of the controls the creativity just flows.

The boys were really excited to see what the Digital Light Designer could do.  They loved to draw pictures and watch them turn into movies right before their eyes.  The boys had fun playing Maze Craze, one of the digital games, because they love mazes.  They also found joy in just coloring the entire area a solid color.  They were just enamored by the pure fun of seeing the stylus change the colors on the screen.

A really great feature is that you are able to save up to 50 of your favorite designs to the memory.  My sons were happy to learn that their digital designs would not be lost once they turned off the machine.

Unlike the Marker Airbrush, the Digital Light Designer runs on 4 D batteries.  Which only bugs me because my sons will leave it running while they run off to go play something else.  You can purchase an AC power adapter seperately from Walmart.com or Amazon.com for only $13.  Which I may have to pick up once these batteries die.  The adapter is one item that I feel should have been included with the product.
