This is to get it ready for some new features we'll soon be rolling out. During the maintenance, the SMTP and IMAP/POP3 servers will be intermittently unavailable. You may also occasionally get "incorrect password errors".

During this change we don't expect any mail to be lost, but it might be delayed. Normally we restrict who can use our SMTP server to connections from our own network, and to other servers sending mail to our users. This is so spammers can not use our server as an open relay. This has the unfortunate effect of also keeping legitimate users who are traveling from using the server. Authenticated SMTP allows you to log in so that you can prove that you're authorized to send mail.

Also - many ISPs are blocking port 25 (The normal SMTP port) from your machine to everywhere except to their servers (Another anti-spam measure). This means even if Pretzel Logic's mail servers allowed everyone to send mail - most ISPs would block you. Fortunately, authenticated SMTP runs on a different port. This means as you move around from home to the office to your favorite coffee bar, you never have to change the settings on your mail client.

Here are the settings:

The outgoing mail server is outbox.pretzel-logic.ca
Your username and password is the same as for the IMAP/POP3 server
The port is 465

Your e-mail application likely has a section labeled "My outgoing mail server requires authentication", then you should see fields for the settings above.

As always, if you have any problems or questions, give us a shout and we'll be happy to help.

Cheers

IMAP authentication was broken

Last night, one of our database maintenance scripts encountered a bug and prevented some domains from authenticate via IMAP.

The problem existed from about 6:15pm to 10:40pm.

We'll be working on the script today to permanently fix the bug.

During this problem all mail was delivered, and authentication to the web service continued to work. The TCP ports were responding, so it looked like it working but mail was not being delivered. The problem was fixed, and should never happen again.

Second, when the RAID was reconfigured, we didn't catch that the drive assignments needed to change. Because of this we are only writing (and reading) to a single drive - instead of the RAID array. Unfortunately this will require another 90 minutes of downtime. Since this is a brand new drive, I'm not too worried about it, but it is something that will need to be fixed eventually in order to have fully redundant disks.

I'm really sorry about these problems. Our policy is however to be completely up front when these issues occur. They affect you and as much as I'd like to hide what is happening, or sugar coat the problems, you deserve to know what is happening to your service.

I also encourage you to comment, or email us if you have any questions.

Cheers.

Everything Checks Out.

All checks are completed, and everything checks out - though we will keep an extra eye on everything over the next few days to make sure everything is happy.

I expect you might notice a speed increase as well.
