New pricenoia Version, New countries available

Here we are, again! We are working on a new version that is currently live at http://www.pricenoia.com! It's a beta, so there are several options that are not fully working yet.

We have included in the price comparison two new amazon stores that are available now, Italy and Spain!

Those new countries have no API but as we did in the past we are getting the info anyway, so you now can see prices from US, CA, UK, FR, DE, JP, ES and IT, including the updated currency conversion and prices including shipping, for new, used and third parties.

We have many ideas, so stay tunned. If you have any comment or ideas, please use our contact form.

Server down, again

Looks like Infinology, own current (for little time) hosting provider for Pricenoia is dead... not the server, but the COMPANY!! Amazing..

Well, until we solve the issue and migrate to a new server (probably on Amazon EC2) please be patient. Once in the new server, there won't be more issues of this kind.

As an extra, we'd like to announce that we are planning a new upgraded version of Pricenoia, developed on RoR. We'll keep informing from this blog!

We've had some problems with the server in the last days, and solving them is taking longer than expected. Sadly, Pricenoia is down in the meanwhile, but not dead!! :)

New feature: Other formats and editions

A new little feature is available at Pricenoia when comparing books, expanding the info offered by Amazon itself.

Until now, when looking at a book, Pricenoia listed similar products, using Amazon recommendations. We've now added a list of up to 10 other formats and editions of the compared book. You can find older printings, paperback editions of a hardcover book, editions in other languages, audiobooks, and some other interesting things.

Some of the books are available new at Amazon, and some of them are old editions that can only be bought used or from third parties (always at Amazon, of course).

For example: One hundred years of solitude, from Gabriel García Marquez.

This new feature uses the xISBN webservice offered by Worldcat. Great stuff!

Pricenoia turns one year old

Many people ask us for how long Pricenoia has been around. Well, as of today, for one full year!

In one year we've been discovered by lots of smart Amazon customers that use Pricenoia on a regular basis. We would like to thank them for sharing the word with friends, post on their blogs or link to Pricenoia when refering to a book online. But don't stop, we need your help spreading the word! :)

Lots of ideas are on the way of being new features, we hope you'll like them as much as we do!

Pricenoia featured in AWS Blog

AWS Blog is the official Amazon Webservices Blog. Yesterday Pricenoia was featured on the site, relating the new updates presented some days ago.

We are happy to see that not only consumers but developers and the Amazon webservices team find Pricenoia interesting and worth mentioning! We will continue to work on new features to improve the site and the buying experience at Amazon.

Lots of new updates to Pricenoia! Here's the list :

We've been betatesters for Amazon Fr and Ca webservices and are now using them. From the user point of view, you can search at Amazon France and Canada, so you have more search options! They are also used in some of the new features.
Added Used and Third party prices for each international amazon store! You can easily check them using specific tabs [new, third and used] or merge all the prices at every amazon site that has the product [all].
Search at all amazon sites at once : A new option in the store selection pulldown. The result is a combination of searches at every store, aggregating the same product when it's available at more than one. This option is useful if you enter a very specific search string, such as title or author name.
Added several product lines to the currently available for search : Electronics, computer software and camera&photo. If you are interested in comparing any other Amazon product, you can try using the Pricenoia Bookmarklet.
More currencies supported. Now if you're from one of the following countries you'll see the price of the product, shipment and total, in your local currency, daily updated : Canada, Japan, UK, Brazil, Australia, China, India, Korea, Mexico, and some others..
Sort by product price or site: By default rows are sorted by Total. You can now sort them by site, product price or even shipment cost. Just press the column title.
Remember preferences : Pricenoia will remember the last tab you selected. If you like the 'all' list, then you will always see this tab by default when checking for a product. The shipping country will also become the default one, and you will see the local currency even when performing a search.
Updated shipping rates: We've updated shipping rates for new products, and included 'Free Super Saver Shipping' to countries where it's available from a specific Amazon store. Todo: Update shipping rates for used and third party (the current ones are the same as New, and may be different) and update shipping rates for electornic and other products that may have specific shipment restrictions.

There are also some minor bug fixes and little features that we are sure you will discover..

Pricenoia Mobile app

We've just released a mobile phone version of Pricenoia. It's a little java application (j2me midp1.0) that can be installed in your mobile phone and do the Pricenoia's price comparison from anywhere.. Now you don't need to be in front of your computer to check a book price at every international Amazon store.

The app is made to run on almost every java phone out there, even if we can't assure that it will work on yours. The best way to know is to install it on your phone and try. It's a beta version, so we will be happy if you mail us with the results, including your phone model and carrier.

Pricenoia mobile is 100% free to download and use. It needs a data connection so you may be charged by your carrier for data transmision. It's made in collaboration with Funtropy, a mobile games and apps development company.

Graphical evolution of price history

This is not a today's new, but it's less than a week old so we think it's noteworthy.

We added a graph that shows the evolution of prices for the product you are checking. As we keep track of each time a product is compared (during the last 3 months), we know the original price it had. The graph is made using the original price at the moment it was compared, uniformised to € or $ at the current exchange rates.

Let's check for example Free Prize Inside!, the last book from marketing guru Seth Godin :

Sometimes it's curious, sometimes its damn interesting.. You can see and track special promotions, offers, discounts..

We've put the graphs, it's up to you to use them in a cool way now..

Hi everybody... first post to this little blog :) The one and only Pricenoia official blog! yeah!

We pretend this blog to be a communication channel with our users.. an easy and fast one, for sure. You will mainly find alerts on new features and site upgrades.. We have many ideas bouncing in our heads rightnow, and you could be the first to know them : just use some syndication (you won't see 10 posts a day -no blogspam-, keep assured).

We will also use it to get some feedback about what you'll like to see in the future or what you think about our current features.. Anyway, you can do it whenever you want using the Pricenoia's contact form.
