Angela said: “My 13 year-old daughter is our primary stitcher. Last spring she and I made bookmarks for all the teachers our children have had in the local elementary school. It was our last year there, so we had the teachers over for a luncheon to thank them for their work. They each chose a bookmark to take home and were just thrilled. Teachers do love books, and what a great keepsake.

“Instead of folding the paper in half to hide the threads, we mount the bookmark on a second piece of cardstock in a coordinating colour.”

The earliest know references are to silver for the 25th wedding anniversary and gold for the 50th wedding anniversary. The tradition may have originated in medieval Germany. The spouse would give his wife a silver garland when they had been married for 25 years.

A reference to wood for the 5th wedding anniversary was has been found dating back to 1875. Other anniversary names have been added over time. The diamond was a well known symbol for the 75th wedding anniversary, but became popular for the 60th wedding anniversary after Queen Victoria’s 60 years on the throne in 1897 was widely marked as her Diamond Jubilee.

The modern names have evolved in response to commercial influences. For example the American National Retail Jeweller Association issued a list in 1937.

If you are not in the UK you are invited to add a list of wedding anniversary names for your country as a comment to this post.

There are two beautiful cards made using the Stitching Cards Free Awareness Ribbon Pattern which has a choice of two sizes of ribbon.

Nedlnut said: “In October, we held a month-long breast cancer fundraiser. The owner of A Stamp Artist Place and I donated the supplies so that all of the money raised could go to our chosen charity. For a donation to The Hope Chest, I taught people how to do paper embroidery using the free ribbon pattern. The Hope Chest is a local organization that helps women in Western NC who are diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer. Thank you so much for designing this pattern and offering it for free so that it can be used for teaching purposes. I love it when someone learns to stitch and it was a bonus to be able to raise money for a wonderful charity.”

To mark 60 years of Her Majesty The Queen as Head of State in the United Kingdom Stitching Cards have released a free Diamond Jubilee pattern.

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations will centre around an extended weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.

Queen Elizabeth II came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002.

The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897.

The Stitching cards Diamond Jubilee pattern would make a great souvenir of this royal occasion.

You can download the pattern at stitchingcards.com.
