noreply@blogger.com (Jeane) — Tue, 29 Sep 2026 18:32:12 +0000

A first look photo of Matthew Macfadyen as George Smiley (photo: The Ink Factory/ Des Willie) in the upcoming BBC series Legacy of Spies has been released today by BBC and MGM+ via BBC Media Centre. Filming has just wrapped up on the highly anticipated espionage thriller, which will launch exclusively on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK and MGM+ streaming in the U.S.

Read more info. via BBC Media Centre below...
Adapted from le Carré's global bestseller, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, and drawing on additional material from his 2017 novel A Legacy of Spies, the eight-part drama marks spymaster George Smiley's long-anticipated return to television with two-time Emmy and BAFTA award-winning Matthew Macfadyen in the iconic role, alongside Emmy-nominated Charlie Hunnam as the embattled, world-weary agent-runner and field operative, Alec Leamas.

As previously revealed, the series also stars, among others, Daniel Brühl as Josef Fiedler, Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu as Doris Quinz, Agnes O'Casey as Liz Gold, Felix Kammerer as Hans-Dieter Mundt, Dan Stevens as Bill Haydon, Jake Dunn as Peter Guillam, Anjana Vasan as Connie Sachs, Charlotte Ritchie as Ann Smiley, Joe Alwyn as Jim Prideaux, with Hugh Laurie as Control.

When Alec Leamas, a highly experienced Circus field operative, recruits Doris Quinz (Devrim Lingau Islamoğlu), a young and dynamic East German woman, to smuggle high-value Stasi documents into the West, it sets in motion a series of events that threaten to explode in the crucible of Cold War Berlin. Pursuing Leamas and Doris are Josef Fiedler (Daniel Brühl) and Hans-Dieter Mundt (Felix Kammerer), two Stasi operatives whose ferocious desire to shut down the intelligence leak is matched only by their internal rivalry and an iron will to outmatch each other.

Pulled into the action is Liz Gold (Agnes O’Casey), an idealistic young woman whose courage and conviction force Leamas to navigate a world where loyalties fracture and betrayal is inevitable. Behind the scenes, the brilliant and taciturn spymaster George Smiley orchestrates operations while the elusive Soviet mastermind Karla looms in the shadows, setting the stage for a conflict that will define a generation. Personal lives become collateral in a ruthless intelligence war, and as the lines between duty and love begin to blur, every emotion becomes a weapon.

Legacy of Spies is set to launch exclusively on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, and on MGM+ in the United States, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Brazil and Spanish-speaking Latin America.

The series was filmed principally in the Czech Republic, with location filming also in the UK and Germany.

Series Review: The Other Bennet Sister (2026)

noreply@blogger.com (Jeane) — Sun, 20 Sep 2026 03:58:35 +0000

I recently binge-watched The Other Bennet Sister's limited (10, 30-minute-long episodes) series on BritBox. I must say, I loved and enjoyed watching this little Pride and Prejudice spin-off show as told in Mary Bennet's POV from the first episode to the last one. It was fun and entertaining to watch.

Read my review of TOBS series below...

The Other Bennet Sister (2026)

Starring: Ella Bruccoleri, Richard E. Grant, Ruth Jones, Indira Varma, Varada Sethu, and more.
Screenplay: Sarah Quintrell (9 episodes), Maddie Dai (1 episode)

Adapted from Janice Harlow’s same title novel and based on Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice novel

The Other Bennet Sister offers a fresh take on one of Jane Austen’s most unassuming characters: Mary Bennet. Forced to step out of her sisters' shadows, Mary embarks on a journey of self-discovery – finding love, and most importantly herself, along the way.

Watch the BritBox trailer for The Other Bennet Sister

Here are my thoughts on The Other Bennet Sister's random episodes I loved and enjoyed watching as well as the pros and cons of things I liked/loved and disliked (though just my constructive criticism, nothing against the cast and crew...who did a fantastic job, by the way, and just my personal opinions on certain things I didn't like or rather was not into from TOBS series...can't love everything, right?).

The Pros (things I like/love):

👒 Ella Bruccoleri - Though I must say, I've never seen nor heard of Miss Ella Bruccoleri before she was cast as Mary Bennet in this series, so I didn't know what to think or expect of her in this role. Still, I waited until after I've seen this series first, to form my thoughts and opinion of her. After seeing her in the series, in my opinion, I thought she was perfectly cast as Miss Mary Bennet and did an amazing job playing this role. I loved and enjoyed watching her as Mary aka the middle child and forgotten Bennet sister. She really nailed this character and that makes watching this series even more fun and enjoyable.

👒 Great casting on familiar faces from previous Pride and Prejudice screen adaptations for Mrs. Hill (Lucy Briers aka Mary Bennet in P&P 1995 miniseries) and Mrs. Gardiner (Indira Varma aka Caroline Bingley in Bride & Prejudice 2004 movie). They were both great in this series and were both a big part of Mary's journey in TOBS. Now, if only they had Talulah Riley (aka Mary Bennet of P&P 2005 movie) to make a surprise cameo appearance in one of the episodes to pander to P&P movie fans as they did with Lucy Briers (from the 1995 miniseries) and Indira Varma (from B&P movie) to cater to P&P 1995 and B&P 2004 fans...they might as well do the same to P&P 2005 movie fans, right? But even without Talulah Riley, it was still nice to see familiar faces from previous P&P related adaptations in this series.

👒 Good casting for Mr. Collins - Indeed and he's short too like the 2005 Mr. Collins, hahaha!

👒 Love seeing the many random references to previous P&P screen adaptations (1995 and 2005). I especially loved and enjoyed spotting several references and nods to the 2005 P&P movie! See a separate post here: Pride & Prejudice (2005) x The Other Bennet Sister (2026)

👒 Mary and Lizzy Bennet scene conversations - While I loved and enjoyed watching the sisterly bonding scenes between Mary and Lizzy, I thought that Lizzy was a bit harsh and critical on Mary. I get that she cares for Mary, but she should just be a big sister and support her on whatever decisions she makes for herself. Having said that, I did love and enjoyed their sisterly moment at Pemberley when Mary was playing the pianoforte and Lizzy and her had a lovely conversation and their brief embracing each other moment. Love that little scene. Wish it was a bit longer. Of course, the butler (would've been nice if it was Darcy who did that since we barely see him in his own home in Pemberley. Though it was funny when he entered randomly reading a newspaper in another scene and made a quick exit as soon as he saw the Bennet women gathered in one room, lol) had interrupted their adorable moment, haha!

👒 Mary Bennet & Mr. Hayward - I like Mary & Tom's pairing in this series. I thought they had chemistry and were cute and adorable together. I definitely ship them and preferred Tom for Mary over Mr. Ryder.

👒 The 10 (30-minute) episodes were too short, but I love this set up as the episodes didn't drag, gets your full attention, and leaves you wanting to see more!

The Cons (things I dislike/hated/disappointed):

👒 Mrs. Bennet - I really hated Mrs. Bennet (the character not the actress) in this series. She was extremely mean to poor Miss Mary (at mostly every scene they were in together...I hit the fast forward button to skip their scenes). It's interesting that she was portrayed as an antagonist in this series. But, I think I tolerated her in the 1995 series (even though she was cringe, annoying, and overbearing) and she wasn't too bad in the 2005 movie (I actually liked Mrs. Bennet in the 2005 movie version because of the way Brenda Blethyn portrayed this character as relatable despite her being annoying sometimes. She just wanted to make sure that her daughters have a roof over their heads or that they marry wealthy and handsome gentlemen for their own benefits and a better future).

👒 The love triangle trope - I'm not very fond of the love triangle (Mr. Hayward x Mary Bennet x Mr. Ryder) part in this series. Not too mention, both men have curly hair. I forget who was who between these two curly gentlemen, hahaha...

But seriously, this love triangle thing is not necessary, even though it was used to create conflicts. Good thing it was minimal and not dragged out for far too long in this series.

Interesting and funny homage to the Darcy wet shirt

in the lake scene in P&P 1995!

👒 Charlotte Lucas - I didn't like how Charlotte Lucas' character was portrayed in this version. She was unlikable and mean to Mary. To think she's Lizzy's best friend, but she shouldn't be looking down on Mary...I understand Caroline Bingley doing that, but not Charlotte.
👒 The casting of Jane and Elizabeth Bennet - Okay, the casting of Jane and Lizzy were not too bad, but it took me a bit to get used to it as I didn’t know who was playing who at first. I mean, the actress who portrayed the eldest Bennet sister, Jane (blonde) looked younger than the actress who played Elizabeth (ginger). Even the pelisse coat Lizzy wore (the light blue one) looks like a homage to Rosamund Pike's Jane Bennet wore in P&P 2005 movie. You'd think she was the one playing Jane (the one who's actually playing Jane should've wore that as a nod to a previous Jane before her and Lizzy should've wore one that's either a nod to Keira's Lizzie or Jennifer Ehle's Lizzy)...just saying...It's like they were playing these iconic characters, but they lack something. I don't really see/recognize the charm and personality or character traits of Jane and Lizzy as described in the novel nor the ones I've seen from the 2005 and 1995 (and even other loose screen adaptations of P&P) versions that would make me say, yeah...they are Jane and Lizzy Bennet!! But that's just me...and besides they were minor characters here in this spin-off adaptation in Mary's POV. I do still like them, the lovely actresses Maddie Close (Jane Bingley) and Poppy Gilbert (Elizabeth Darcy) the eldest Bennet sisters (who are now married to Bingley and Darcy in this version...reminds me of Death Comes to Pemberley's Jane and Lizzy, who were married in that version) in their own interpretations.

👒 No sisterly bonding moments or scenes between Jane and Mary - I was a lil’ disappointed that there wasn’t a Jane and Mary sisterly bonding moment (like Lizzie and Mary did) or even just a little interaction between just the two of them in this series. I only saw a bit of them that I could remember when Jane inquired about Mr. Ryder to Mary, but that was quite brief with Lizzie joining in the conversation.

👒 Mr. Darcy’s casting (and unfortunately, Mr. Bingley too, while we're at it) and cameo - Okay, I get that Mr. Darcy (and Mr. Bingley, who was only seen for a second or so in the second episode, if I remember correctly. I don't even remember what he looked like...) is not an important character and more of a cameo and background character in this series and probably not handsome enough to tempt me or anyone (other than Elizabeth, of course), especially Mary, as we’re seeing him (unattractive) through her POV.

Still, it would’ve been awesome if a handsome looking actor (side note: okay, I googled the actor who's playing Darcy in TOBS and his name is Victor Pilard. He's actually good looking...that is, of course, when he is not in a Darcy costume and makeup...) as Darcy has been casted even if he had a brief, blink and you missed his brief and random appearances, lol.

Victor Pilard

Victor Pilard as Mr. Darcy in The Other Bennet Sister

See what I mean?! 😐 Joking aside, I just find this Darcy (see screen capture above ^ from TOBS) unattractive and forgettable, even with a cameo appearance. I’m sorry, I just thought he looks more like a Mr. Collins here than a Mr. Darcy. He should’ve at least had a strong presence and an unforgettable moment with Lizzy, especially at the Pemberley scenes (which was interesting that we didn't see one) even if he had a brief appearance and no dialogue. After all, he owns the place and he’s the master of Pemberley and married to Mary’s older sister, Lizzy. Instead, he was a background character in his own home. But then again, he's not an important character here nor Mr. Bingley, and their wives (Lizzy and Jane) have minor, supporting characters. So, that's just my thoughts and opinion on Darcy's cameo appearance in this series.

Overall:

I thought The Other Bennet Sister was a great miniseries. It was well-made with a good storytelling, great casting (especially with the casting of Ella B as the main character Mary Bennet), and it had a nice intro with an equally nice score to listen to. Also, it was fast paced and a fun limited series to watch. Despite my list of pros and cons, I must say, there are many things to love and enjoy about this series. It's an easy watch. I even rewatched all 10 short episodes while writing this review. I highly recommend you check this out and add it to your must watchlist, if you haven’t already done so!

Carey Mulligan (looking stunningly gorgeous in a romantic white and royal blue dress that was reportedly from The Row's autumn/winter 2026 collection. The Row was founded in 2005 by the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley!) attended the 78th annual prime time Emmy Awards in LA last Monday night (September 14, 2026) and she made her Emmy debut as a double nominee. Her recent Netflix's Beef (Season 2) series received a total of 16 Primetime Emmy nominations including two nods for Carey. She's nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series and for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series (as one of the executive producers of the series’ season 2)! Unfortunately, Carey and her co-stars lost the acting nods they received and their series only won 3 Creative Emmys out of 16 nominations. Well, better win 3 Emmy awards than none, right?

Movie Casting News: Tom Hollander reunites with Pride & Prejudice co-stars Keira Knightley and Simon Woods in upcoming dark comedy 'The Worst'!

noreply@blogger.com (Jeane) — Wed, 26 Aug 2026 03:35:53 +0000

Here's a new further casting update of Simon Woods' upcoming feature film directorial debut The Worst, a dark comedy which he also wrote. This film is currently in-production and it stars his former Pride & Prejudice co-star Keira Knightley. And now, with this recent casting news update, looks like Tom Hollander along with Sam Claflin, Anna Maxwell Martin, and more has been added to the already fabulous ensemble cast. Unfortunately, Jamie Dornan, who was previously announced has left the production. No reason has been cited for his departure. My only guess would be scheduling conflict as he looks to have some upcoming film projects he's been busy working on.

So, with Tom joining 'The Worst" cast, we'll have another P&P mini cast reunion with Keira, Simon, and Tom!

Here's more info. on additional casting including Tom Hollander, Sam Claflin, and Anna Maxwell Martin per Variety...

Sam Claflin, Tom Hollander, Anthony Boyle and Josh Finan Among Ensemble Joining Keira Knightley and Alicia Vikander in Dark Comedy ‘The Worst’ (EXCLUSIVE)

With shooting now underway in the south of France on dark comedy “The Worst,” the production has added a major cohort of names to its already buzzy cast.

Sam Claflin (“F.A.S.T.,” “Daisy Jones and the Six”), Tom Hollander (“Gosford Park,” “The Night Manager”), Anthony Boyle (“I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning,” “The Altruists”), Josh Finan (“Say Nothing,” “Waiting for the Out”), Anna Maxwell Martin (“Star City,” “Until I Kill You”), Dustin Demri-Burns (“The Magic Faraway Tree,” “Slow Horses”) and Sian Clifford (“Fleabag,” “The Ballad of Wallis Island”) have joined the film, which was first announced by Variety earlier this year.

Zackary Momoh (“Doctor Sleep,” “Parish”) and Eka Chavleishvili (“Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry”) round out the ensemble.

The new additions join the previously announced Keira Knightley (“The Imitation Game, Pride & Prejudice”), Alicia Vikander (“Firebrand,” “The Danish Girl”) and Erin Kellyman (“Eleanor the Great,” “28 Years Later”). Meanwhile, Boyle replaces fellow Belfast-born actor Jamie Dornan, who was originally cast. Marking the feature directorial debut of Simon Woods, “The Worst” — which was launched at the European Film Market by Protagonist Pictures, Logical Pictures Group and UTA Independent Film Group — is described as a “wickedly entertaining class satire” that “skewers privilege, power and performative morality, turning an elegant couples’ getaway into a hilariously disastrous night to remember.”

The film centers on socialite Emily Fisher (Vikander) and her husband Max (Hollander) as they invite their equally wealthy friends to their new chateau in France for the night. Among the guests are a group of people who really can’t stand each other: Jim (Clafin) and his wife Holly (Knightley), a struggling diversity consultant who continuously clashes with everyone until she gets a migraine, and Danny (Boyle) a quick-witted talent agent that name-drops his client list every chance he gets. As the evening begins to unravel and dark secrets are revealed, waitress Niamh (Kellyman) finds herself right in the middle of their chaos.

Written and helmed by actor-turned-playwright-turned-director Woods (National Theatre’s “Hansard,” “Such a Lovely Day”), “The Worst” is being produced by Andy Berg and John Sachs of Eclipse Films, alongside BAFTA winner Josh Hyams of Promise Pictures. Frédéric Fiore, Ryan Wickers and Andrei Kamarowsky serve as executive producers for Logical Pictures Group, alongside Dave Bishop, James Pugh and George Hamilton for Protagonist Pictures and Charles Low for Eclipse.

Logical Pictures Group are financing the film, and co-rep international sales alongside Protagonist Pictures. UTA Independent Film Group co-represent domestic rights.

Today (August 25th), is Pride & Prejudice's own brilliant director Joe Wright's (photo by Focus Features from P&P’s 20th Anniversary screening in LA in April 2025) 54th Birthday! I found out several years ago that his birthday's today and he shares the same birthday as Tom Hollander! They've worked together 3 times in 3 (Pride & Prejudice, The Soloist, and Hanna) of his 5 feature films.

Joe Wright (born 25 August 1972) is an English film director best known for Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, Hanna, and Anna Karenina.

Wright was born on 25 August 1972 in London, where his parents founded the Little Angel Theatre, a puppet theatre in Islington.

Joe Wright P&P Related Quotes
"Pride & Prejudice (2005) is my first film with a happy ending. Before, I naively thought they were a cop-out, but now I've come to believe that happy endings and wish fulfillment are an incredibly important part of our cultural life".

"On our first day of filming we shot a dining room table scene, which any director will tell you is tough, and with Dame Judi Dench at the head of the table - on the first day of my first feature - terrifying. But she's a professional and a genuinely nice person, so it was a joy to see her play a difficult woman." (Joe Wright)

“This is about a girl who falls in love. I wanted to hold back looking at Darcy, seeing Darcy, for a while. So you don’t really see him clearly until Elizabeth sees him. The whole idea of the film is to make it as subjective as possible. So you’re constantly seeing the world through her eyes”. (Joe Wright)

"It was lovely. What a joy of job. Three months skipping around the English countryside with loads of girls. It was heaven." (Joe Wright)

Joe Wright on casting Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet:
"I wouldn't say that I didn't want to cast her, I didn't go to anyone else before Keira but I felt perhaps that she was too beautiful to play Elizabeth Bennet. So I met her anyway, and she was the right age and I was very keen to cast people that were the right age. So I met Keira very late one night in a hotel bar in Montreal and discovered this scruffy little kid who's a tomboy really, sort of spiky knees and elbows, and suddenly it occurred to me that was perfect for Elizabeth. Elizabeth Bennet is a tomboy and she refuses to conform to the feminine ideals of the period. Then I started talking to Keira and discovered her to be incredibly bright, incredibly funny, independently spirited, very strong young woman who doesn't say what she thinks you want to hear, but says exactly what she thinks. All of those qualities made me think that Keira was perfect for Elizabeth Bennet."

"She was the most incredibly focused person of any age that I have ever met and I think that is part of her strength. She's extraordinary, she's almost Zen-like in that way, she's really extraordinarily focused. She conserves her energy; she puts it all into those moments when the camera is turning. She's incredible."

Joe Wright on casting Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy:
"First, Matthew's the right age. Second, he's a big strong manly man. I didn't want a pretty boy, boy band kind of boy, I wanted a man, and he's an incredible actor. I've loved his work for many years and I think he is an astonishingly good actor. I know also he is not vain; he's not coming to the role trying to promote himself as a f---ing sex symbol. He's coming as an actor trying to understand who his character is. He's interested in people and I think that's probably why he acts and so for all of those reasons he felt perfect. Also, he is just a big sexy man and when I put him opposite Keira Knightley they were just astonishing together."

Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen on Joe Wright

“I loved working with Joe Wright. I think he did an amazing job with the movie. It’s only an impression of the book. I think he was really successful in telling the story in two hours and still managing to appease the whole spectrum of people from the hardcore Austen fans to men in the street who went grudgingly to a girlie film.” (Matthew Macfadyen)

~*~

"On-screen chemistry between two actors is rare. I think creative chemistry between actor and director is even more rare -- and for some reason Joe [Wright] and I have that." (Keira Knightley)

~*~

"Joe is an actor’s director. There are plenty of directors who aren’t that interested, but Joe likes actors I think, he’s interested in the process of it. So it was a treat, it really was." (Matthew Macfadyen)

~*~

"Joe just kept saying that he believed in me, which is amazing because all actresses are, by nature, completely insecure beings. If they say that they’re not, they’re lying. It’s a profession made out of insecurities. You’ve got to use them all. So, to have somebody say, `I believe in you, you can do this´ is absolutely extraordinary. He [Joe Wright] was so sweet and he kept saying, `I’m going to keep you safe darling, don’t worry about it´" (Keira Knightley)

TV Casting News: Matthew Macfadyen to reunite and lead star with Claire Foy in 'You Are Here' screen adaptation for BBC and Starz!

noreply@blogger.com (Jeane) — Thu, 30 Jul 2026 17:06:02 +0000

Matthew Macfadyen is reuniting and lead starring with his Little Dorrit co-star Claire Foy in the small screen adaptation of David Nicholls romance You Are Here.

The eight-part BBC and Starz series, following the undeniable attraction between characters Michael and Marnie, is based on Nicholls' best-selling novel of the same name.

Read more info. via The Hollywood Reporter below...

Matthew Macfadyen and Claire Foy will star in You Are Here, an eight-part adaptation of David Nicholls’ acclaimed, best-selling novel of the same name.

The BBC and Starz have greenlit the series, directed by Lenny Abrahamson (Normal People) and produced by Element Pictures.

Succession alum Macfadyen and The Crown‘s Foy will lead the cast as Michael and Marnie, respectively. When a mutual friend throws them together, the pair unexpectedly find themselves setting off on an epic walk.

Against the odds, they end up on the brink of a relationship that neither was looking for, but which might be exactly the one they both need. Michael and Marnie go coast-to-coast across the stunning — and soaking — English countryside, navigating an undeniable attraction that is as exhilarating as it is terrifying.

“I’m so delighted to be working on You Are Here with Element, the BBC, Starz and Lenny, whose work I’ve admired for many years,” said Nicholls, who also wrote the widely adapted One Day. “Matthew and Claire are both just dream casting, wonderful in comedy and drama, so detailed and thoughtful and sympathetic. The intention with the novel was to write a close-up study of a relationship, but set against this magnificent landscape, and that’s our ambition here too; to make something both intimate and epic, funny and dramatic, a romantic comedy with real emotion.”

Abrahamson added that the story is ultimately “deeply hopeful.” He said: “As a huge admirer of David’s writing, I’m delighted to be collaborating with him to bring You Are Here to the screen. The novel is such a beautiful love story — funny, profound and ultimately deeply hopeful. I’m also extremely excited to have Claire and Matthew, two actors I hugely admire, playing Michael and Marnie.”

Both Nicholls and Abrahamson also serve as executive producers alongside Foy and MacFadyen, Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe and Emma Norton for Element Pictures and Jonny Richards and Anna Ferguson for the BBC. The series is produced by Clare Shepherd.

Global sales will be handled by Fremantle with De Maio Entertainment spearheading the partnership with Starz. Set along the Coast to Coast walking trail from the Lake District to Robin Hood’s Bay in North Yorkshire, U.K., You Are Here will be filmed in the Lake District and around Manchester.

Throwback when Matthew Macfadyen & Claire Foy previously co-starred in Little Dorrit miniseries!!
