The Basic ADLs Include:

1. Eating
2. Bathing
3. Dressing
4. Continence
5. Using the restroom
6. Transferring (the ability to move oneself

Why are ADLs Important?

ADLs, or Activities of Daily Living, are tasks that a person performs throughout their day. As we age, our ability to remain independent is contingent upon our ability to perform ADLs. Around half of all Americans entering care facilities do so because they are unable to perform ADLs. Once someone begins to need help with some of these basic ADLs, it could mean that they are no longer safe to remain independent. Coverage for nursing costs requires that a person be unable to perform at least two basic ADLs.

Depending upon the severity of the ADL that is unable to be completed, the level of care varies. Most long-term care is not medical care, but rather assistance with ADLs and people can choose from in-home care to assisted living or a nursing home.

What are IADLs?

There is also a group of activities called IADLs, or Instrumental Activities of Daily Living. IADLs include: cooking, driving, caring for pets, completing housework, using the phone or computer, shopping, managing finances, and keeping track of medication. Oftentimes, people who are unable to perform one or more IADLs can still remain independent with a little bit of outside help. This help could come from adult children or from a home health worker or aid. IADLs are the activities that keep a person independent and maintain quality of life, but are not necessarily life threatening if unable to be performed. For example, it is far less detrimental if someone can no longer drive than if they can no longer transfer alone.

Do I need Long-term Care?

When deciding what type of care is best for your loved one it is best to have an honest conversation about what they can and cannot do. If certain things are beginning to become more difficult and may be impossible in the near future, then it is good to come up with a plan now rather than later. Talk to a medical social worker, placement agency, doctor, or care manager about your options.

Are you looking for the best medical alert system for home and away? There are many options for this. One product we offer is called the NextAlert and it does not need a landline connection. Everything needed to make it work is contained within the medical alert necklace or bracelet for home and away. This means it will work both inside your house and outside. The best part of the NextAlert is that it is water resistant. Unlike most of the cellular medical alert systems on the market, our system actually works in the shower, bath, etc. Since the bathroom is a high risk area, having water resistant fall protection is invaluable.

Once you press the NextAlert medical alert system for home and away, you are connected directly to an emergency operator. The operator will ask you if you need any assistance. Similar to a telephone, you speak directly through the pendant and communicate your emergency and location to the operator. Once you’ve told them what is going on, they will dispatch the appropriate emergency response and help will be immediately on its way. If you have any questions in regards to our medical alert systems for home and away, feel free to give us a call 24/7.

The good news is that there are many great options. The first question you have to ask yourself is do you or do you not have a phone line. If you don’t have a home telephone line, you might want to look into a cellular medical alert system like the eResponder that not only works in the home but outside. The eResponder works in the shower as well making it a very versatile and user friendly device. Additionally, if you are interested in any of our other systems without a phone line simply mention that you don’t have one and one of our representatives would be more than happy to help.

Prime Medical Alert offers two personal medical alert systems you can speak directly through the necklace called the LifeSentry. If you have a phone line and are looking at the most basic device backed by Prime’s high quality monitoring, the Linear PERS personal medical alert system is a great option.

A lot of seniors today do not have peace of mind for several reasons. One, they are bothered by the changes that happened with their physical body. Just imagine being able to walk independently during your younger years, and then gradually lose all of these things? Secondly, most seniors no longer have the presence of their children and other family members. Most of the “old folks” now are living alone, and basically are living in empty nests. Their kids have left trying to pursue a career. When it comes to emergency situations, these are some of the things that make it hard for them to reach the medical professionals during their time of need. When walking a few steps could take minutes or hours, it is imperative to minimize the lag between the accident, or the medical emergency and the time when the medical professionals arrive.

Things that Can Happen in Minutes

In a matter of minutes, the lack of oxygen in the brain can cause irreparable brain damage by killing brain cells. Just imagine a senior not getting enough oxygenated blood to the brain usually caused from a heart attack or asphyxia? These are some things that can be the difference between life and death.

So what should be done in order to save lives? For most of us, it is ideal for us to know how to assess a situation and carry out proper medical care. OIf you are unfamiliar with a situation, you should not interfere and seek professional help. There are ABCs in terms of assessment and carrying out medical care to anyone in an emergency situation. These ABCs have become useful especially during catastrophic events in providing triage.

A- Airway

Airway is the main priority above all types of concerns. With an obstructed airway, air cannot get into the lungs and can hasten a fatal situation because there will be no oxygen that can be transported by the blood. How to know if there is a problem with the airway? Checking for obstruction is the first thing that you need to do. You will first need to check for any signs of obstructions by the mouth or throat that could prevent air from coming in. This is the reason why medical professionals turn the patient into their right side to avoid the tongue to block the airway.

B- Breathing

Breathing is the process of getting air into the lungs. Using breathing organs, the body inhales oxygen and exhales carbon dioxide. Without the lungs getting oxygen, it is also tantamount to not having oxygenated blood. During cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, it is important to assess if the person is breathing by putting the cheek into the person’s nose. Once the person is not breathing, the one conducting CPR will have to give two initial breathes via mouth, while covering the nose of the one receiving CPR.

C- Circulation

Circulation is the third priority that you need to look into for any type of emergency. Among the signs that someone is not getting enough oxygen because of a circulation problem, they may have a weak pulse. By palpating the carotid arteries, you will know if there is a weak, or even an absent pulse. Also, look for the danger signs like the lips that are turning blue. It is also considered a circulation problem if the person is bleeding. Most of these cases require someone to be put on shock position, where their legs will be raised in order to prioritize perfusion into the brain.

Why Medical Alarm Equipments Matter?

A lot of older individuals prefer to live independently. The problem with these types of scenarios is that they typically live on their own, without any type of medical professional to attend to them and have no backup method or primary method other than the telephone for calling help. Thanks to the advances in technology, it is now possible to get immediate medical help with medical alert systems. Medical alert systems simplify the process of getting immediate medical help as it provides the users with a bracelet which can allow communication easily. The goal for this type of device is to minimize the waiting time especially during a medical emergency, when every minute counts and could mean life or death.

If you are looking whether or not medical alerts are covered by medicaid then you have come to the right place. Medicare does not cover the recurring charges of medical alert systems at this time, but in some states, Medicaid does. If you give us a call we would be more than happy to discuss the various options available to you, your patients, and/or your family members.

Oftentimes people don’t realize they have the insurance to cover the recurring charges associated with a medical alert system. Additionally, at Prime Medical Alert, we provide a discounted rate to begin with so you know you aren’t giving away money unnecessarily.

Our prices start at 24.95/month and customers of Prime Medical Alert aren’t bound by any contracts. Also, as a plus, each of our systems comes with a free lockbox. The lockbox holds a spare key and in the event of a dispatch, provides easy access to the first responders.

With Prime, you are able to customize how you’d like any emergency to be dealt with. We keep a predesignated plan of action on file and our monitoring centers are able to follow the plan of action and dispatch appropriately. Generally, our clients want us to call their home phone, their cell phones, and a couple neighbors before dispatching. In the event of there being no answer during an emergency, we dispatch paramedics immediately and notify emergency contacts as well.

There are several options when you are looking for a premium medical alert system. It really depends upon your preference and your needs. Are you looking for a fall detection alert, or would you prefer the ability to speak directly into the necklace? Additionally, are medication reminders important to the person using the system? Our representatives can assess the situation and set you up with a premium medical alert system.

We offer nearly every system and it mainly depends upon the needs of the user. If the user is unable to press a button, a fall detection system might be the best option. If the user is more independent and spends a lot of time away from the centrally located base unit, it is important to consider a premium medical alert system where you can actually speak into the necklace or bracelet.

Once any of our systems are activated, they contact our central monitoring station. All of our operators are EMT certified which means you are getting the best when it comes to monitoring. Once an operator answer on the other line, the client in distress can either have the emergency services directly dispatched, call emergency contacts or a combination of both. If they are unable to speak, we follow the predesignated plan of action.

Once the first responders arrive at the scene, they are aided by the lockbox; a secure box that holds a spare key. We provide them with the combination for easy access. In this manner, there is no need to break down the door or break a window to gain access to the house.

Give us a call 24/7 and one of our representative will be more than happy to answer any questions.

If you are asking whether you should get a medical alert bracelet or necklace, this depends on a several factors. First, are you used to wearing bracelets or necklaces. The medical alert bracelet or necklace does not weight that much and will be lighter than most necklaces and bracelets. If you are used to wearing a necklace, then we would recommend wearing a medical alert necklace. If you are used to wearing a watch or a bracelet, then we would recommend wearing a medical alert bracelet. Both options are water resistant. Something special that we include with our program is the option to switch the bracelet to a necklace and vice versa. The transmitter can be de-attached from the holder and can be made into either form. That way, you can figure out which style you like the best. A lot of people aren’t sure when they call in, so we send both options for them to try out at their leisure.

On both the bracelet and necklace included with the medical alert system, the bracelet and necklace have a button that you press. As soon as you press this button, one of our operators comes on over the base unit. They will ask you if you need assistance. Depending upon the type of emergency, they are able to dispatch the fire department, the ambulance, or the paramedics. Also, if the client requests it, our operators are able to call their emergency contacts they have on file. All of our operators are EMT certified and have a minimum education requirement. They only handle medical alert calls and are therefore much more effective at not only dispatching, but comforting the clients during their time of need.

When looking into medical alert bracelets or necklaces it is important to make sure they are comfortable and lightweight. If they aren’t comfortable there is a good chance the user won’t wear the device and therefore the medical alert will be ineffective. Our bracelets and necklaces weigh approximately ½ ounce and are around the size of a quarter; the watch attachment is the size of a small watch. On the bracelet and the necklace medical alert transmitters, there is a inset button and because of this, the button is hard to press accidentally. This ensures that there aren’t many false alarms. If the button is accidentally pressed, the client can simply press the clear button or speak with the operator and tell them it is an accident.

Both the bracelet and necklace attachments are water resistant and can be used while showering, bathing, washing the dishes, and any other water activities. Please let us know if you have any questions. We are available around the clock and would be more than happy to answer them.

Prime Medical Alert currently supports Verizon for your medical alert systems as an acceptable phone service. Even if you are using Verizon, it is still a good idea to give us a call. Verizon offers several different phone services and not all of them are reliable enough to support a medical alert system data connection. When you press the button on a Verizon phone medical alert system, it sends data over an encrypted gateway. After we receive the data and our servers assign an identity to this data, we are able to respond accordingly.

The problem with going by the ANI (or the phone number from which the device makes a call), is that it can be skewed. This doesn’t happen often, but for those with caller ID, you have seen when it shows the number as unavailable. If you simply have a Verizon cell phone, we have a wireless device that works alongside the medical alert system so that you can stay safe and independent.

With our Verizon medical alert systems, you get a necklace and a bracelet. On the necklace or bracelet is a button that you press in the event of an emergency. As soon as you press this button, it sends a signal to the base unit which then connects to our monitoring station. After it connects and verifies the identity (takes almost no time for the verification), our operators ask the client if they are having a medical emergency. All of our operators are EMT certified instead of using standard call center technicians. The higher quality operators ensure that your emergency situation is handled with speed and professionalism. Our EMT operators have the same training as paramedics and are able to provide you with a high standard of service. If you need a Verizon medical alert system, or have any other questions, feel free to request information and a representative from Prime will be in touch with you shortly.

Fall detection for seniors has been offered for quite some time. However, there are a lot of questions on the reliability of the fall detection devices. While we do offer the fall detection technology, there are some issues that exist and will continue to exist for quite a while until the state of technology and the algorithms behind the technology improve.

The difference between a fall detection medical alert system and a standard system is that with fall detection, the user does not have to press the button to summon help. It automatically triggers the sensor if the user has a fall and is unable to get up. In theory, this technology sounds great. However, after selling the technology for several years, there are many shortcomings. The major shortcoming is the ability of the device to actually detect a fall. Additionally, there are many false alarms which become discouraging for the user.

False alarms cause many people to completely take off the fall detection medical alarm, which essentially renders it useless. The last thing we want someone to do is take off their necklace or bracelet and not have access to help. There are very few users in my opinion that require a fall detection device. The only users that absolutely require a fall detection medical alert system are the users that are passing out and/or falling and knocking themselves out. With the users that are falling and knocking themselves out, especially if this is happening regularly, they may be beyond the ability to live independently. If there is very infrequent fainting, vertigo, etc..then the fall detection device might be a perfect fit.

The majority of our clients (vast majority of around 99%) use the regular medical alert systems with ease and stay independent for years. When an accident does happen or if they feel lightheaded, etc..they can simply press the button to summon help. The most popular device we offer is the LifeSentry. The reason it is so popular is because the user can actually speak through the necklace and bracelet rather than through the main unit. Give us a call or request information and we would be more than happy to assess your situation to see if a fall detection medical alert system is right for you.
