Corporate America-Going Viral with Humor

We live in a world where 'going viral' is now a good thing. Used to be viral was a bad thing. Businesses and people go viral all the time.
'Going viral' in a short amount of time, millions of people are aware of a message, situation or in our case a video.

Whether you're searching to see something amazing on the other side of the world or just want a good laugh, YouTube is a community with the capabilities of putting anyone on the front lines of millions of people every day. This is how the media learns about broadcast content, in some cases viral can happen overnight. Others take time to simmer and hit viral status.

With these hilarious viral videos breaking through to the mainstream, CEO's and business owners alike must have the question in mind: how can this help my business?

Look at how Dollar Shave Club went viral:

We believe humor can work for any marketing effort if done properly. Humor is something that goes 'viral' and being able to cater to that could effectively drive traffic and business to your company. The key is to keep your humor tasteful.

As an example, take a look at the eTrade baby ad campaign. eTrade put together a promotion campaign in which babies are overdubbed by voice actors to make it seem as though the baby is giving the viewer retirement advice.

This campaign was a huge hit. Each commercial has over 100,000 views on YouTube, the highest of which having over 3 million views. How was this ad campaign so widely successful? This campaign was not only captivating for the viewer, it was also tasteful.

To create an effective marketing campaign using humor, you must keep a few things in mind.

First off, keep your promotion politically correct. If you're working for a corporation, you want the highest viewership you can. It wouldn’t be wise to create an ad that could potentially offend or hurt the feelings of the viewer.

Keep it light; your audience wants genuine humor without the use of possibly offensive content. If you have to question whether it’s offensive, you shouldn't be posting it to represent you corporation!

Another important consideration is the geographical area your video is produced for. American humor may not be received well in other countries, just as humor from other cultures may not translate well in America. Some cultures just don't understand other cultures' humor. All cultures look at humor in a different regard, so it's important to know where you're trying to gain traffic.

Another crucial piece of this is demographic. Keep in mind who you're selling to. What is their age and gender? In regards to eTrade, their target market is adults and seniors looking towards retirement, and self directed investors. This demographic probably have kids of their own, so the creative concept of babies talking keeps the viewer watching, because it's comical to viewers and has a high video production value. They're catering to their market with a concept that is widely acclaimed as hilarious.

YouTube serves as a great resource for business exposure, and humor really attracts the viewership necessary to bring traffic to a corporation, if done correctly. Keeping demographic, content, culture and overall viewership in mind could push any business into “viral” status in no time!

Video is an International Bestseller

It would be redundant for me to write a blog post about the power of video and how it has hit critical mass. Most people know that with smart phones and digital cameras that also record video, as well as small pocket video recorders, and the list goes on: obviously video has hit critical mass. <bk></bk>

It's convenient, it's fun, it's affordable and it's easy to do.
So what does the future of video look like? You can almost guarantee that each year the amount of video being shared will multiply exponentially. You can also almost guarantee the need for Cloud video storage will be greater than it currently is. <bk></bk>

There will probably be several video networks that will be formed as a result of the demand for video sharing and storage. Different websites will niche market according to the type of video they want to host and position.

The question is, how will you and your small business take advantage of the growth and boom in video production? Will you utilize the tools that are readily available right now to create video for your company?

http://www.PrimeauProductions.com is launching a network called http://www.PrimeauTV.com which positions motivational speakers’ video content all in one location that serves multiple purposes. This content is taken from the dozens of experts we have worked with over the last 29 years. It is the one video based website that you can use that has been loaded with pre-qualified video content that is motivational by nature. That is how we are using our experience and expertise with regard to video content.

What can you do within your business on any of the networks that are available by offering video that is beneficial to your demographic?
As the owner of a southeast Michigan based video company I see the opportunity in businesses getting on the video bandwagon now in order to learn more about it and take advantage of it as it becomes even bigger than it is today.

Making Movies in Michigan

I’m from southeast Michigan and live and work out of Rochester Hills, which is a suburb of Detroit. I’m very impressed with the number of production companies and talented professionals that are available for creating excellent video content. <bk></bk>

It seems that even though the state pulled the plug on the Michigan Film Incentive program taking the wind out of what was growing and building here in Michigan that helped the state financially, there is still a production ‘vibe’ lingering about, and rumors of, a new film incentive in the works (an additional $25 million of one-time funding was put aside in the fiscal year 2013 budget for film industry subsidies) to help attract major production companies back to Michigan.<bk></bk>

As the owner of http://www.PrimeauProductions.com, I have seen the ups and downs of the Detroit video scene for almost 30 years. There are three things that every production company should know about making movies in Michigan from a successful Detroit video production owner’s perspective.

First, you have to own the right equipment. And part of owning the right equipment is the knowledge and expertise to know when to rent the right equipment instead of buying it. I believe every production company has to own a high-end video camera – Primeau Productions owns both DSLR equipment as well as other high-def cameras that all have a purpose and features that are important in the production process. It is very costly to the production company owner to keep up with the fast-changing technology that helps us stay in the game.

The second component is to have the expertise in order to use that equipment to your best advantage, and expertise involves the knowledge, skill and ability to operate the software that is used in creating video productions, as well as having a team of professionals that are highly creative, efficient and know how to work together to bring a production to life.

The final ingredient is the business skill. After nearly 30 years I’ve made a lot of mistakes and had a lot of successes in Detroit video production. Thankfully, I’ve had more successes than failures or Primeau Productions would not be here today.

Being able to make business decisions that benefit the company is one of the hardest things for production owners to learn. It’s not always the best idea to run out and borrow money and buy all of the latest and greatest equipment. Sometimes it’s better to rent. Cash flow is the name of the game for success in business. And when you’re in debt, yet you own all the best equipment and discover the weakest link – all production companies have a ‘weakest link’ in their corporate structure, whether it’s equipment, people, software or hardware or, even more commonly, lack of marketing and sales (lack of marketing and sales will kill a business faster than anything else) – your production company needs to be run similar to playing a chess game. Every aspect of building your production company for success, especially in areas like Detroit, Michigan, where the video production industry is constantly going up and down. I have found that not limiting ourselves to doing business just in Michigan but, rather, around the world has not only given our company credibility but also built the number of contacts and resources that we have that have contributed to our success.

It all comes down to three things: the right equipment; being able to use the equipment in the best way possible and business skills.

Electronic storage devices and Litigation

800.647.4281
We have become a society that uses many various portable electronic devises. These PED’s are often used in criminal activity and become evidence in litigation. It is important for any forensic expert to consider all possibilities when forensically examining PED’s for use in litigation.

Experienced forensic examiners know how to investigate cell phones to retrieve data that can assist in litigation. Tablets have also entered the court room as electronic evidence. Primeau Forensics has processed two cases this year in 2012 that both involved unconventional media evidence.
One case involved a Motorola tablet that had been used to record video. It was not the crime that was recorded but rather the digital videos files served as an alibi for the defense and proved that the accused did not commit the crime.

The defendant was accused of armed robbery and was adamant that he did not commit the robbery. There were eye witnesses that identified him by a unique tattoo on his neck. The attorney that contacted me was a brilliant defense attorney and knew that this video evidence that was recorded by our client was recorded over a time span that occurred at the same time as the armed robbery was committed.

Primeau Forensics examined the Motorola Xoom and was able to prove scientifically after examination of the digital file properties that the accused was part of those video recordings and that the times these digital video files were recorded on the Xoom tablet were accurate. The digital video files on the Motorola Xoom became his alibi and the three counts of felony armed robbery were dropped by the prosecution a week before the trial was due to begin.

Another case we forensically represented a cell phone that was used at the same time a drug transaction had taken place. This was another case of mistaken identity. Primeau Forensics was able to prove beyond a reasonable degree of professional certainty that the accused use his cell phone at the exact time the drug transaction had occurred and that cell phone conversation served as an alibi that convinced the prosecution to drop all charges.

As electronic devises enter the courtroom, it is crucial that forensic experts assist litigators in understanding the various roles portable electronic devises play and help substantiate the truth behind the devise information so integrity is maintained as well as a chain of custody validating the PED information that is valuable to the due process.

http://www.PrimeauForensics.com

Unemployment and the 2012 Presidential Election

One of the discussions on the back burner in politics today as we approach the presidential election is the country’s unemployment rate. Unemployment numbers are very disturbing because so many people have been programmed to believe that they fit into only one mold, when the truth is so many people have more than one talent, skill and ability and are appropriate for many different job positions. The problem is that every person is hypnotized to believe they are an engineer, or that they are a secretary, or that they are a farm worker and they’re not willing to entertain any other possibilities. One of the things the politicians aren’t discussing as we approach the election is different activities that people can do in order to gain employment. One of these activities is to consider other opportunities based on the passions that people have in their life. If you’re an animal lover, why not consider gaining employment in some sort of an animal care business, like a veterinarian office or a pet shop. Any activity is better than no activity when it comes to earning income, and anything is better than being on the unemployment line. I would be interested in hearing one of our presidential candidates discuss how people should explore their passion, and how they could connect that passion to an earning opportunity.

When applying for an earning opportunity or employment, one of the ways to communicate your passion is through a traditional resume. Why not write a couple of extra paragraphs about your passion in your resume instead of just your qualifications. Your personality is one of the biggest character traits that are going to get you hired, in my opinion. But we don’t hear any of our presidential candidates talking about this.

Another aspect of creating a differentiator for yourself and showing your passion is a video resume. Video resumes are a great way to use sight and sound to communicate your passion, and your talent, skill and ability. Just once I would love to see our presidential candidates talk about subjects that really matter. Gay marriage, abortion and other non-solvable topics always seem to be the headlines of all the political discussions. These are social and moral issues that will never be resolved and I believe every person in this country should have their right to do whatever they feel is appropriate in any situation. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave. Our presidential candidates would get an awful lot more attention, and actually help a cause, like this country’s unemployment rate, if they would just communicate some simple success principles in their messages instead of being so concerned with putting out fires of criticism from some of the larger lobbying groups, like abortion and gay marriage.

Ten Tips for Recording Video Internationally

Over the last twenty-eight plus years, I have recorded video around the world. As a result, I have learned a lot the hard way. In this blog post I will share my list of ten tips for recording video globally.

Number one: Make sure to have two sets of power adaptors for your video equipment. Because you will have to recharge your batteries, laptop, lights and other equipment while you're on the road, you will need to be able to connect to each country’s electric system. The power adaptor kit that you could purchase at Best Buy or on Amazon includes all of these adaptors. However, based on my experience, they sometimes break when you’re on the road and it can be difficult to find the appropriate adaptors in the foreign countries. You also need electrical interfaces for your laptop (power supply) and camera equipment. I strongly recommend that you have two power supplies for each item as well. In fact, I heartily advise you to bring two of everything when you travel globally. That way you will never be without.

Number two: Keep all your equipment hidden from view in your hotel rooms. Theft in foreign countries is eminent. If you keep your equipment in your closet, cover your equipment with a blanket and put your "do not disturb" sign out on your room door when you are not in it, you have just reduced the odds of someone coming into your room and stealing your camera equipment. I am not implying anything negative about foreign travel here, but rather emphasizing that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Number three: Keep the lens clean when shooting. Bring a lens cleaning cloth with you and each day. Before you start shooting and at the end of your day (and even periodically throughout the day), clean your camera lens whether or not you can see any watermarks or dust spots. They will come when you least expect it and epically ruin a shot by producing a lens flare or shooting into the sun when light helps to magnify those stains and spots. Clean the lens so you can avoid marred footage. Think about it: back home you may have the opportunity to recreate a stained video. When traveling globally, you will not have another chance to record the same footage.

Number four: Take inventory when you set up and tear down and travel from location to location. This could be as simple as typing out a sheet of all of your equipment so that when you pack up and move, you can do what I call an idiot check to make sure that you have everything. Carry that inventory list with you everywhere. Make a couple copies as back up.

Number five: Prioritize. You can’t always get everything shot in one day, so create a short list of what your day’s objectives are and list them in the order of priority so that you know you’ll get done what absolutely has to be done. If you have time, you can do the things toward the bottom of the list.

Number six: If you’re shooting outside, think about the shots in proportion to the location of the sun. This is also about prioritizing: plan your day according to sun location. All professionals know that when shooting outdoors, you want to shoot with your back to the sun. Have some flags that can be put over your talents' heads in order to stop them from squinting due to too much sun. These flags can be spandex or sun reflectors that can be placed strategically so that your subject is still lit, but not squinting from the sun.

Number seven. After spending a day shooting, back everything up to an external hard drive. When the transition to high definition occurred, we moved away from tape storage on cameras. Therefore, we record our footage onto internal memory cards. Not only should you have back up cards for your camera so that you have plenty of storage space, you should also back up those cards to an external hard drive. That way when you’re done shooting for the day, thousands of miles from home, you have your precious footage in two places.

Number eight: Pack your equipment strategically and in strong, safe containers. It is worth the price to have good padded road cases for your equipment to help protect it while traveling in the belly of an airplane. Whenever possible, carry your camera on the plane and check the rest of your gear. You want to have all your tools, but keep in mind that many airlines charge for excess baggage.

Number nine: You can never have too many batteries. Purchase back up batteries for your equipment, including your laptop. If you ever get stranded in an airport, it’s nice to not have to look for power outlets and deal with adaptors in an airport. Having an extra laptop battery will assure that you can work from anywhere and keep busy while waiting. Plus, in the grand scheme of things, batteries are cheap compared to the loss of being without power and missing one more shot or take you wanted to record.

Number ten: Always check your focus. This falls on the same lines as keeping your lens clean.

When you are in your home country you will always know where to go when you need something for your remote video recording. In other countries, you do not know where to go and may not have access to replacement items when you need them. Think in advance, script out your shots and prioritize them so when you return, you will have plenty of good stories to tell.

How Video Production Is Essential For Online Business

Bill Brown, who's on staff at Atlanta Video, wrote the following guest blog for us:

There is definitely something that cannot be avoided by any online business that wants to successfully stay in business. What is this something that must be acknowledged and accepted by e-commerce owners? It is nothing other than the new trend that is literally taking the Internet by storm. This trend is the growing use of video production for businesses that do business in the Internet world.

This new wave is taking over the Internet by leaps and bounds as technology continues to improve and Internet connections become faster and faster to accommodate surfers. Therefore, it only defines the natural order of things, and videos are the thing that customers do desire to watch from the relaxation of their own homes while exploring the wonderful world of the Internet.

Video production has the overwhelming power to sell and it is this selling ability that does provide results for an online business. It also gives your customers an upfront and personal close up of your product. Potential customers are also more likely to purchase a product from a website that utilizes the benefit of video than from other websites.

Video production is very essential to the presence of online business because it has the power to professionally present information and targets its specific audience head-on from the get go.

Because of today's technology, a person can pretty much own their own network, and part of this network would, of course, be lots of informative videos to share with potential customers everywhere and anywhere.

Maintain a regular presence of video production. Sharing informative videos can get your business message across to others with major impact. Internet video will specifically inform potential customers about who you are and what you have to offer them, whether it's a particular product or service. Internet video also gives current customers the opportunity to get to know you better and to deepen their loyalty towards your company and/or unique brand.

The strengths of your particular company and your product/services are laid out in detail for all to get to know better. Video production delivers information to customers faster than any other form of marketing communication out there.

Video production also allows a great deal of personal interaction between the company and its existing or potential customers. Choosing this popular form of multimedia for marketing purposes is without a doubt very smart to do. However, videos do need to be professional from start to finish. Anything that is amateur or unprofessional in material will only serve to drive customers elsewhere and not boost sales at all. Any videos that are made need to reflect your brand in the best light possible and be made professionally.

Good video production is essential indeed for online businesses to get traffic to their websites and to be successful online. It is a creative force that takes highly imaginative ideas to the next level and beyond.

Author Bio: Bill Brown is a professional at Atlanta Video, Inc. Atlanta Video, Inc. has been producing broadcast programming since 1976. Atlanta video produces commercials, music videos, training videos, and more. If you like to create video for your business, find video production in Atlanta.

How to Create a Viral Video and Why You Might Not Need to

Davin Broadbent kindly shared the following blog about his views on web video's potential to go viral. Davin's a marketing manager and online video expert at Creativa, a web video production company in Australia.

The web is built for sharing and I don’t think anyone will argue with me on this. Social Media, torrent sites, search engines and a plethora of other platforms have recognised and exploited the need for and ease of sharing content online. People will share anything… If you can digitalise it, then there is a good chance that somewhere someone is sharing it with their friends or peers. Web video is the ideal product for digital sharing because unlike other one dimensional media it has the advantage of combining both audio and visual to convey a message to your device.

Web natives are incredibly familiar with the video sharing phenomenon and in fact as early as 1995 the first real viral videos began to surface (although the term “viral video” was not coined until 2009 after the runaway success of the clip “David after Dentist”). Viral in this instance simply refers to the way that these web videos seem to spread “like a virus.”

And like a virus, how or why a certain video will spread is often hard to predict or plan. You can imagine how frustrating this must be for advertisers and businesses who would love nothing better than to own the fool proof formula for creating a web video that will be viewed and shared by millions of people without the costs associated with broadcast advertising or pay per push as I call it (mainly because pay per view was taken).

In truth there is a lot of potential in viral video and indeed most videos do have limited potential to “go viral” but there is a lot more to it than simply creating a funny, entertaining or unique web video and loading it onto YouTube. Creating successful viral videos requires luck, taste, strategy, luck, planning, familiarity with online trends, luck, timing and most importantly luck. It helps to remember that there are 3 parties involved in the Viral Process. These are your company, the sharer and, of course, the recipients. The greater the benefit to the sharer and recipients, the more likely they are to share, and the more viral you’re going to be.

There are several ways to spread viral content, assuming of course that your content meets the constantly shifting taste criteria of an ever more cynical web population. Notable among these are:

Option 1 – The Tastemaker

Sometimes referred to as nodes these “tastemakers” are often celebrities or people with substantial influence online. They may have a large following on social media or traditional media and if they like, suggest or support your video there is a good chance that their influence will drive your video or create momentum for it to begin being shared virally.

Option 2 – Seeding

There are people, agencies and companies that specialise in “seeding” or sharing content online. Of course this isn’t a free service and results may vary

Option 3 – Advertising / marketing – pay per push

By utilising strategically paid placement of your content it is possible for you to encourage seeding to a level that may facilitate viral sharing.

There is of course another option for businesses and this is where companies like Creativa and Primeau Productions come in. With well thought out content, planning and strategy it is possible to create a great video for a business, person, product or service and optimise that video utilising easily available technology to ensure that when people are searching for specific content they find your video first. Now this isn’t likely to ensure that your video is shared by millions but it will ensure that your video is seen by many of the people that matter and because of this these videos are often cheaper and easier to produce. These videos speak directly to your customers and of course if they share it, then that is definitely a bonus.

Is a viral video an achievable aim?

Every video publisher has the wish (be honest) that their content will be viewed by as many interested parties as possible.

Many so called video marketing guru’s have capitalised on brands who have seen the riches out there and want their share of it, they have sold services touting viral video or advising companies on how to go viral with their video.

For example:

This has in turn invited criticism (and rightly so) by more objective marketers who have clearly stated that in fact it is impossible to “make” a viral video.

A video cannot be viral through its very nature – it is the human response to the video that can be viral.

But is that true? Is it true that a viral video cannot be created?

It is true that a video going viral depends on many individual users having a similar emotional response to the video and sharing it. However there are a few things that can perhaps be done to send a video on it’s way to success.

Observation 1 - Humans are predictable to a degree and there are patterns in our behaviour.

There is a common response to a giggling baby and there is a common response to watching a couple copulate in public (apologies for putting that image in your head – I was making a point). Humans do have socially learned reactions to the things other people do and say.

We wrote a blog post last year on the essence of a viral video (http://www.mywebpresenters.com/articles/2011/10/the-essence-of-a-viral-v...). This was inspired by a piece of large scale research by Jonah Berger and Katherine L. Milkman where they analysed the sharing behaviour on 7000 articles from the New York Times to discover what content was shared the most and why. They found that virality involves a physiological response to a piece of content; it has to arouse a certain emotional response for the content to be shared.

They found that people share both positive and negative content. And finally they found that we share content as we want to be known as kind, generous, helpful, witty and knowledgeable.

Therefore if we know what kind of emotional response we are looking for in a viewer then we can plan content towards achieving this.

On the face of it you may feel that creating a video for your business that evokes an emotional response is tricky but people do get emotional in business situations, particularly customer service situations.

Think back to the last time you got upset with a business because of their poor customer service; did you feel so strongly that you wanted vengeance?

Well vengeance could mean moving your business to another provider – what if a few hours after your battle you saw a compelling video by a competitor of your service provider that addressed the exact concerns and problems you have?

When in an emotional state you would probably share that video too and you would likely forward it to anyone you know who has the same complaint as you – because you are nice, and you like to help others find happiness.

Observation 2 – Viral video success can be gamed with money

If we take the music industry as an example; over the past 30 years the sales of music have been gamed by the record companies. Sales are not dictated by true objectivity and capitalism. There are many great musicians that have failed and many incredibly wealthy music celebs (not musicians) who have made a fortune by working to a formula. If we take the boy band/girl band phenomenon; which of these would you say are great musicians:

Back Street Boys
Take That
N Sync
New Kids on the Block
Spice Girls
Boyzone
Westlife

None of them (and yes, I am happy to argue this with any die hard fans – will give you some pink sweatbands if you can convince me that I am wrong); yet they have all had run away viral success. Why is this?

It is because the music has been formulaically produced to be easy on the ear and then the product has been marketed through well-established channels using vast sums of money.

I just took a look at the top 40 for today – perhaps 50% of it is music that is actually no good (my bigoted and moody opinion).

Thankfully services such as SoundCloud, iTunes, MixCloud, Spotify etc are making music a lot more accessible and giving lesser known artists a stage (excuse the pun) on which to promote themselves. Yes, I know that these channels can also be heavily influenced but at least nowadays media consumption is becoming far more varied due to the internet.

OK, rant over. Back to viral video:

In the same way that the music industry has seen runaway viral successes of songs this too can happen with video. Why is that the most viewed videos on Youtube are often created by large brands such as Volkswagen, Evian and Old Spice?

Observation 3 – video could become a viral video not necessarily due to the strength of it’s content.

There are of course many videos which are not created by large brands with huge budgets that get into the top viewed videos on Youtube due to their unique appeal and through a genuine viral reaction from viewers.

But some of them are not very interesting or fun - Here is an example:

The only way for me to explain why this video has had 700,000 views is because the channel it is posted to has close to 1.5 million subscribers. I do not see anything that is stand out interesting about the content itself.

Therefore the takeaway here is that large readerships of video can be achieved through making connections with influential people.

This is really the crux of how and why a video can reach a large audience. Corporations such as Volkswagen will connect with key bloggers in their niche as well as influential Youtube channel owners that cover their niche. Then they will also have large social network followings, which can be leveraged to spread the word.

The key difference/advantage that large corporations have here is the ability to pay bloggers/channel owners/social marketers to promote their content, most of us will have to do it the hard way – through building genuine relationships with these people in order to get them to help us promote our content.

To do this successfully I suggest that you find 3-5 key bloggers in your niche, the 3-5 most influential Youtube channels (or channels which you believe serve your audience) and to contact them directly and build a relationship over a few months – this may mean you interviewing them, it may mean you commenting on their work, on their blogs and asking questions and generally being friendly and helpful. Then once a relationship is established you could ask them if they would be willing to help you promote your content in order to give it a kick start. If they like your content then there is no reason for them to say no.

So, going back to our original question; I do believe that getting a video to reach a large audience is achievable, but unlike the popular misconception, it is not easy – it takes hard work and a real time commitment to first the production but then even more significant (unfortunately) the marketing.

Author Bio

Neil Davidson is the Founder of My Web Presenters, who are a leading Video Production specialist in the UK. They work with businesses of all sizes to create and market compelling and emotive video that helps them to communicate with their specific audience.
