We have been working with the new online exam technology with the APMG, for the PRINCE2 Foundation exam. It seems to be working great and we have run exams in Canada, USA, South Africa and Australia without any issues, although there are very strict rules surrounding the use of the webcam. If you are planning to take the online exam make sure you follow the setup rules fully, as most issues seem to be around the initial setup, and showing the layout of the room and desk! The value of deconstructing roles into skills ( IT Management ) I am constantly amazed at the “hit and miss” approach many organisations have in relation to recruiting IT staff.

There is great value in adopting frameworks like ITIL, Prince2, COBIT and others to standardise processes and implement good governance.

Unless we define the roles that support these frameworks effectively, then people will be challenged in performing their tasks and being effective in their roles.

Firstly the objective of the PRINCE2 Foundation examination is to enable you to demonstrate an understanding of the PRINCE2 principles, processes, themes, techniques and roles. The Foundation examination uses objective test questions, which require you to choose a response to a question from a set of choices, for which the correct answer is predetermined.

We are going explain the format of the question papers, and the different styles of question asked. There are also some suggestions on how to approach answering the various styles of question. Objective testing 8 questions - 10 question items per question, each worth one mark

44 marks or more required to pass (out of 80 available) - 55%

Two-and-a-half hours (150 minutes) duration, no additional reading time

Open book exam (official PRINCE2 manual only).

What is it about any business proposal that makes it more important than any other? I am about to present one of the most important business presentations of my entire career. It has to be fresh and bold. My mind flashes back to a time when I was in college, barely awake during a business class as one of the professors is talking about the importance of time management and presenting the hook. I had to be convincing and inspiring.

And then I remembered my PRINCE2 certification training. With one deep breath, I entered the room and I was no longer hesitant, but ready to face this room ready to blow them away. They would leave the presentation, more than interested in what they were about to be part of.

Cabinet Office Deputy Director Juliet Mountford joined 900 attendees at itSMF UK’s ITSM12 Conference last week to outline plans for the Government owned ITIL and PRINCE2 frameworks.

In the surprise appearance just before the conference closed, Ms Mountford confirmed that the Cabinet Office has launched the tender process to find a joint venture partner for the Best Management Practice portfolio, which includes the market leading PRINCE2 and ITIL professional standards.

The Government has ambitious plans to develop PRINCE2, ITIL and other products as the global industry standards,” she said, “a move that will create new opportunities for economic growth.”

Is 'best practice' really best?

Sometimes the best practice is simply to be flexible and adapt your response to the situation at hand. Are you paralysed by 'best practice'

Far too many of the firms I work with seem to be. People are unable to do anything without filling in the required forms, undergoing the required checks, jumping through the necessary hoops, all in the name of ITIL or W3C or PRINCE2 or some ISO standard.

The technology industry, for all its dynamism, seems all too keen to weigh itself down with these so-called 'best practices'.

Of course, this isn’t really best practice at all. It’s bureaucracy by another name.

And it’s far from the intent of the originators of those standards. So what’s going on here?

I’ve Got PRINCE2 Why Would I Need MSP?

It’s a perfectly understandable question to which there are excellent answers showing that a PRINCE2 and MSP combo is a formulae for success.

To start with they’re different. A project is a short-term, temporary entity that will deliver an output, a product, which refers back to the business case; a programme is still temporary, but it is a longer-term undertaking that manages projects to ensure that they deliver outcomes and benefits linked to – and this is important – strategic objectives – the grand visions.

Thinking big for a moment, say you were one of those charged with delivering the Olympic and Paralympic Games. One of your strategic objectives would have been to “Deliver the Olympic Park and all venues on time, within agreed budget and to specification, minimizing the call on public funds and providing for a sustainable legacy”. Some goal! And one that you wouldn’t be able to achieve with just one project, or two or even 10; in fact, the actual Games organisers had dozens of projects on the go.

So they needed help; they needed MSP.

Large IT efforts often cost much more than planned; some can put the whole organization in jeopardy...

As IT systems become an important competitive element in many industries, technology projects are getting larger, touching more parts of the organization, and posing a risk to the company if something goes wrong. Unfortunately, things often do go wrong.

Our research, conducted in collaboration with the University of Oxford, suggests that half of all large IT projects—defined as those with initial price tags exceeding $15 million—massively blow their budgets. On average, large IT projects run 45 percent over budget and 7 percent over time, while delivering 56 percent less value than predicted.
