I have moved to four different dormitories last year.

At my first dorm, I was overwhelmed by people who think that I could just sell my pubic hair for money.

My second dorm saw the domination of a black, fat, ugly Ilokano who thinks that he can just on/off the electric fan and the lights anytime he wants. What he doesn't know is that he has two other board mates in the room -- both detest him big time.

The dorm also saw the emergence of a kawatan, who happens to be my land lady's cousin, in the room at 8 a.m. I saw him twice (consecutively) in the room -- same time, with the same stupidest reason (looking for a tsinelas under the pillow?)

Balay-balay?

On my third transfer, I thought it was way better than my first and second.

However, after a few weeks of sleeping on the floor with loyal pals, Mr. Tanga and Ms. Ilaga, I realized I should have demanded a papag from the land lady on my first day.

My anger grew worse when she told me, "Everybody sleeps on the floor in Makati?"

Come again?

After a month, I left my blue room (the wall and floor were painted blue). I felt better (like how my fat, tomboyish, classmate, who is an ultimate fanatic of colored bandanas and baggy pants, felt when she got rid of her former best friend).

I am already on my fourth dorm, but I still feel like I am discontented -- not because the floor is blue or I have an Ilokano room mate again; but because my discontentment has grown worse.

My room is not your ordinary boarding house room. It is tiled and has two exhaust fans. We also have an iron stand and an iron fore free use.

However, our door (if you call it door) has some issues that need to be 'fixed'.

As robbery is quite a popular crime in this side of the city, I am afraid our place would be some evil's prey should we not have a decent lock for the door.

The door is open, yet screened. It has a lock from the inside (you may only lock from the outside if everyone else is gone); but if someone is yet to go home from work or where else you are compelled to wake up from your slumber to open them. Worse, some cannot even utter words "thank you" after you do them a favor.

Some of them go home late at night. So, when I am left in the room alone, instinctively, the door has to see a locking. Why? I don't want to be butchered while at sleep; and what if someone enters the room and steals something from the room?

One of my room mates told me that his former room mates lost some cell phones and a laptop while they were sleeping.

He narrated that the robber may have entered the room when one of the room mates had to use the comfort room downstairs.

When the two other room mates woke up they found their valuables missing.

The incident happened in the morning. See what happens when some people cannot act responsibly, and are insensitive (read makes noise [as in irritatingly slams anything] when others are sleeping)?

SPENDING Christmas in my home province was the best thing that ever happened this year.

Though I was not able to meet all of my friends and former acquaintances in Iloilo, I gather I met ones that have been very special to me.

My initial plan was to spend Christ’s big day in Bacolod as it is my most favorite city. As some of my friends were not available on the dates I would want to spend time with them, I had to compromise and forget about the quality cakes and pastries at Calea, and Sorrento.

I spent my first day in the metro with my mother and my pet dog, Reena, who was obviously feeling happy about my homecoming. Ma was already asking me on what pasalubong I would want her to buy me (on my first day of vacation!) She wanted me to go back to Manille asap (kidding).

We went to SM City, and there, I felt that I was officially in Iloilo City. I bought my beloved mother things that she wanted for the holidays (including a plantsa), and treated her over lunch.

Ma wanted to try Maridel’s cake at Plazuela, but it was closed.

Ma, a fan of Starbucks, invited me for coffee, but when she saw the line (read as long line) at the counter, she said, “Kabuki a. It’s not worth it.” Instead, we had a cup of coffee and slice of her favorite blueberry cheesecake at Ferragamo.

We were still at SM City the next day. Truly, there is no other place to go in Iloilo, but SM City.

My 10-day stay in Iloilo became more special when I found love in Iloilo.

I’d like to call ‘love’ ‘Boss’.

Boss and I went downtown and reminisced the old Iloilo; had coffee at my favorite coffee shop, Bluejay; and spent most of the time together. We watched funny movies on boss' laptop; ate donuts and window shopped.

On December 25, I joined two family gatherings. I met some cousins and was surprised to see them grow taller and bigger. Everyone was dancing and laughing. Seeing my younger cousins now, I realized that I am very old.

This New Year, my mother told me I have to spend it with my brother, who is based in Cavite; and my father, who told me he is in Navotas.

Should my father tell me I have become a giant prairie dog, I would just smile and brush him off – anyway, more than two ugly people said I am feeht.

Iya udayon ginapautokan ang mga bagay-bagay bisan indi man kinahanglan palibugan.

Gina dala na lang niya sa kadlaw ang mga ginabtayag kung kaisa.

Satong nagsangkad na gid ang mga kata-kata kag pagpanghilabot sa iya wala na niya napunggan ang kaugalingon kag iya na ini ginkumpronta.

Sang nagligad nga Marso iya gin prangka ang ila nga department head na indi na siya magatudlo sa hayskul.

Madamo na gid abinga mga malaw-ay nga estorya ang nagalapta.

Isa sa mga ini ang tsismis nga may relasyon sila sang upod niya nga maestra.

May nakakita nga isa ka estudyante sa ila sa faculty room.

Mapasa kon tani siya sang reaction paper pero wala na niya gindayon kay nasapwan niya nga nagakagtanay si Sir kag Ma’am sa ibabaw sang latuk.

Ginpanghimutigan ni Leo sa prinsipal ang estorya kay may nobya na siya sa Pagadian.

“Hindi ko gid ina maobra, Ma’am, bangod palangga ko gid ang akon nga nobya,” siling ni Leopoldo.

Biernes nga adlaw nagpauli si Leo.

Ginhungod niya gid nga makaabot digto sa ila nga banwa sang timprano para makalagaw pa sila sang iya nga nobya sa plaza pagkagab-i.

Masadya siya samtang nagalingkod malapit sa drayber sang bus.

Tatlo ka mga bag kag isa ka plastic bag nga puno sing chichirya kag mga delata ang iya bitbit.

Gusto sang iban magabalik sa pag maestro. Lain nga daan siya kumpara sa mga tigulang na mga maestra. Bisan strikto, ginahatagan niya gid sang tyempo ang mga kabataan nga maghampang. Para kay Leo wala gid sang problema kung pahampangon ang mga estudyante sa klasrum. Basta ang importante may matun-an sila sa ginaubra. Kung magsulod gani sa pinsar niya ang mga ekspiryensya niya indi niya mapunggan ang maglumawlumaw. Galing nakadesisyon na siya.

Indi siya maributay sang iya nga gina suksok kag itsura apang kada minuto ginapamangkot niya si Teodor, iya hinablos, kung manami ang iya nga bistida. Siya madason pangilayan sang bata nga lalake kag yuhuman para indi sagi ka prumublema.

Daw nagutukan si Gilma si bayo niya. Sagi niya lingi ang iya liog kag mangalot na daw may ginabatyag nga la. Daw nainitan o nakatulan siya sa iya gina sul-ob.

Nagdugang ang ginabatyag nga kakulba kag kasadya sang babaye sang may nagapadulong nga bus. Nakapanaog na ang tanan nga mga pasahero pero wala pa niya nakit-an si Leo. Nagbalik siya sa pagpungko kag gin pagwa sa shoulder bag isa ka plastik sang Sky Flakes.

Marso 4, 2006 – Sabado.

Kailinit gid kay Leo. Kabanihut klase nga lalake! Ngaa indi niya ako mapakasalan? Siling niya palangga niya gid ako. Hatag niya tanan na gusto ko nga pangayuon sa iya. Kag karon ginapangayo ko na ako iya pakaslan, hambalon niya lang ako na indi pa siya handa? Daw tanga lang ako to ya e. Nag paako lang ako gale sa akon nabatyag na panindugan niya gid ang amon paghigugmaanay. Tapos amo lang to ya?

Daw gakalong ang akon utok kung madumduman ko ang mga tinaga niya sa akon sang ginusisa ko siya sa iya plano.

Sano pa ikaw mangin ready sa akon? Kulang pa ang akon nga pagtampad kag sakripisyo kag indi pa siya makadesisyon? Tam-an gid sa akon ka hangag. Patay na patay ako sa isa ka lalake na wala man gale sa akon luyag. Ang panulukan niya sa akon isa lang ka Gold Eagle Beer! Ginapangita niya kung siya may kinahanglanon nga pagbulig kung siya mamingawon!

Ano gid klase pagpangaman ang dapat nga kalanglanon para magtawhay ang amon pagupuray bilang isa ka magtiayon haw? Nagpangayo bala ako sang isa ka lutaw nga balay? Nagpangayo bala ako sang isa ka Ford na salkyan? Simple man lang na kasal ang gusto ko. Ngaa indi niya matabo tumanon?

Indi ko gid siya pagsapakon. Gusto ko mabatyagan niya ang hapdi na ginaoso sang akon nga dughan subong. Kahuluya gid ya sang gin ubra nya. Ako ang babaye. Ako ang ga pangayo sa iya nga palanggaon ako. Ako ang nagamandar na pakasalan niya ako. Kag amo lang ato ang hambalon niya, I am not ready yet?

Ti san-o ka pa mangin ready, Leo? Asta san-o ako ya maghulat sa imo nga pagaprubar? Indi ka maghambal na pakasalan mo ako kung milyonaryo ka na! Pareho lang na gin hambal mo nga dimabuhat nga kita mag-upuray!

Marso 5, 2008 – Sunday.

Nga-a sagi niya pa ako sunod-sunod kung wala man siya balak na pakaslan ako. Nga-a sagi niya pa pilit ang iya nga kaugalingon sa akon man? Kung palangga niya ako dugay na tani kami nag-upuray sa isa ka balay! Wala man siya tupa. Binaliswa niya ako sa ubos. Ano pa ang pulos na i-entertain ko pa siya? Ano na lang na ya hambalon sang mga tawo sa akon. Indi ko ya. Kahuluya! Kung indi siya sa akon, indi man ako. Sagi mo pilit ang isa ka lalake na indi sa imo! Gilma, abi pagbugtaw!

Marso 6, 2006 – Monday.

Nasamongan ako diri magtinir sa balay. Kung magtinir pa ako sang madugay-dugay malubong gid ako sa mga memorya sang kami pa ni Leo. Siguro mapauli na lang ako danay sa Cotabato. Malayo-layo diri sa prisensya ni Leo. Bisan ano ko kapanago sa iya indi ko gid malikawan na siya makit-an, kag siya amo man. Malakat na lang ako karon sa hapon. Indi ko na gid maagwantahan ining pagpangasubo. Indi na ako maghibi liwat! Wala sing pulos ang hibi-an ang isa ka butang na wala pagbatyag sa imo nga balatyagon. Pero kung makita ko siya, daw may kusog na gapilit sa akon na sapakon siya. Daw indi ko dayon maributay. Ambot gani sini a. Tatlo ka adlaw ko pa lang siya na wala gina sapak pero daw grabe na ang pagkahidlaw ko sa iya. Nahidlaw man ako sa iya nga pag-akbay sa akon, pagluso sa akon nga aping, ang mga jokes niya na bisan walay pulos wala man dulog akon hirikhik. Hala! Kamingaw gali no! Daw subong ko lang na realasa. Namingaw man ako sang pan-q na amon ginakaon kada hapon.

Marso 7, 2006 – Tuesday.

Wala ako nadayon sa pagpauli kagapon. Nagpabulig abi si Auntie Minggay magpuni sang mga furniture sa ila nga balay. Naboringan na siya nga daan sang pagplastar sang mga kasangkapan sa kinalain-lain na bahin sang ila puluy-an. Hambal ko gani sa iya pintahan niya na lang, o di gani koreohan sang wallpaper ang dingding para kuno abi bag-o.

Pagkatapos namon paninlo sa ila balay ginpanyapunan niya ako sa banwa. Nagestoryahanay lang sang madali kag nagpauli man kami dayon kay daw gin balda ang amon lawas.

Nagkit-anay kami ni Leo kagina. Upoday kami ni Auntie Minggay sadto. Ginpalapitan niya kami ni Auntie. Gin hagad niya ako lakat, alang-alang bayaan ko si Auntie. Hambal ko, Sa dason lang kita estoryahanay. Bal-an mo may upod ako subong mamilit ka gid. Ano pa gid ang ihambal mo sa akon haw? Daw bal-an ko naman ato. Hapos man lang ako Leo estoryahon. Indi man ako mapilit klase tawo. Kung wala ka na sing pagpalangga sa akon, fine. Wala ako pagkinahanglan sang isa ka lalake na magpagamo lang sang akon nga kaluntaran diri sa kalibutan.

“Basta sa dason ha?” Ang iya lang gin sabat. Ambot gani pero kacute gid sa iya kagina.

Nagkatiempo si Gilma lima ka adlaw pagkatapos sila magtaboay ni Leo sa pasilyo.

Pabalik- balik man ang isa sa balay sang babaye kag siya mahambalan lang na indi pa siya ready na makapagkita sa iya. Sang dominggo sa iya pagbalik na kit-an siya sang iya nobyo na naga yuhom-yuhom samtang ga basa sang libro sa dalom sang kahoy sa hardin sang ila nga balay. Daw ginakilig ang iya nga atay sa pagbasa. Nanuktok si Leo sa gate. May dala nga gamay nga regalo. Daw sa piho gid siya sa pagbit-bit sini kay personal niya ginkunopan ang box. Pinasahi nga daan ang hatagan niya sini.

“Gil… Gilma! Tagbalay!” tawag ni Leo samtang gina tuktok ang pula nga gate.

“Abi paghulat… may buzzer gid lang pro,” hutik ni Gilma sa iya

kaugalingon kag gin buksan ang gate.

“Gin pabudlayan mo pa lawas mo. Ti kundi nagbalanog imo kamot sa pagpanuktok. Kita mo gid lang na may buzzer kami. Tani ginusar mo.” Si Gilma gihapon.

“Ay! Wala ko maantiparahan. Okay lang a. Indi na bala sagi prumoblema, indi man imo kamot ang nasakitan.” Sunlog ni Leo sa nobya.

“Hmmp! Nugay-i ko Leopoldo! Akig pa ako sa imo. Indi na ako pag-intu-a. Ano na dala mo? Sin-o naman ang imo gin into kag gin patulan ang mga corny mo nga mga jokes?”

“Wala a. Ara ka naman. Bal-an mo man siguro kung sino lang ang ginapalangga ko sang matuod-tuod.”

“Buot mo silingon, may ginapalangga ka pa gale na lango-lango lang?”

“Estorya kuris-kuris a! Wala na e. Ikaw lang gani. Para ni sa imo. Tani maluyagan mo. Barato lang na. Indi mo lang pagsuyaan.”

“Para sa diin naman ini? Nagdala ka pa! Tani ginsupot mo na lang kwarta mo para inugpakasal sa imo nga bag-o nga nobya!” kag gin pasulod ni Gilma ang lalake sa ila nga balay.

“Ti ano na gusto mo nga estoryahan ta? Sa din ta suguran? Ako ya Leo tsindihan ta na ka. Naakseptar ko na ang butang nga indi ka gid para sa akon. Na indi kita meant for each other.”

“Gin hambal ko Gilma na indi na ako sa imo haw? Wala gid ako nakahambal sina. Ang akon lang yamakasupot kita sang tsakto para indi ta mangabudlay sa ulihi. Indi masalbar sang aton pagpalanggaanay ang gatas sang aton mga kabataan. Indi masalbar sang aton gugma sa isa kag isa ang pagkaon ta sa pangadlaw-adlaw. Hatagan ta duwa ka tuig ang ining relasyon bago ta magpakasal. After two years, may matipon na kita sina.”

“Kadugay sang duwa ka tuig Leo. Sa duwa ka tuig madamo ang pwede nga matabo. Paano kung makakita ka sang lain. Paano kung matamaran ka sa akon? Paano kung matak-an ako sang hulat sa imo? Paano kung bwas aga malipatan mo ang pangalan ko? Paano kung aton mabatayagan na wala na ta luyag sa isa kag isa?

Mahimo mo bala na ako balikan liwat kag tuparon ang promisa mo bisan ang ginatiyabaw sang imo nga kasing-kasing, She’s not worth it! Mahimo mo bala na piliton ako para mabalik ang pagpalangga ko sa imo? Leo, di-mahimo. Tam-an ka imposible ang gina pangayo mo na ubrahon ko. Gusto mo na maghulat ako sa wala patud nga butang.”

“Gilma, amo na gin ina ang pagtulok mo sa akon? Abi mo sa akon wala na gid sang word of honor? Pakaslan ta gid ikaw Gilma. Indi na magbag-o ang akon nga plano na ikaw dal-on sa altar. Pagkatapos sang duwa ka tuig magakit-anay kita liwat. Makapatindog na kita sang balay. Bisan payag-payag lang pero ang importante, uporay kita.”

May nagapadulong na bus sa parking area sang terminal. Nabatyagan ni Gilma na ang nobyo ara na digto. Sa wakas, makit-an niya na liwat ang nobyo. Madugay na tini-on niya na ini ginahulat. Kung siya iya makit-an karon iya ini hakson sang todo-todo. Bahala na kung tulukon siya sang mga pasahero. Wala siya labot kay ini na nga adlaw ang ginahulat niya. Nagbalik si Leo kay pakaslan na siya. Nagbalik si Leo kay tumanon na nila pareho ang mga promisa nila sa isa kag isa. Nagbalik si Leo tungod na siya lang ang babaye na iya gin palangga sang matuod-tuod.

Nag-untat ang bus sa pinakatuo nga bahin sang parking area. Amat-amat nagpanaog

Ang mga pasahero upod sang ila mga ginabitbit na plastic bags kag backpack. Daw sa ano kasadya ang ginapakita sa ila nga mga itsura kag ngirit. Si Leo nagapreparar na sa pagpanaog. Si Gilma ginabantayan niya gihapon si Leo na makapanaog sa bus. Ayawan ka dala si Leo sang mga bags niya. Mabug-at ang isa na yara sa iya nga likod. May nakita si Gilma na kapareho sa gora ni Leo kag siya nagngirit. Nagsulod si Leo sa waiting area. Pinangita niya ang nobya. Naglibot ang iya nga mata. Natingala kay nga-a wala pa niya ini nakit-an.

11 MOMENTS TV SHOULD HAVE NOT BROADCAST IN 2011

Some things (including people) we see on the television do not deserve our attention.

Kris Aquino is one. She may be witty and spontaneous, but she’s just too full of herself. She would always have a say on something, but she could not even fix her personal issues.

Aling Dionisia Pacquiao is no different from Kris, though the latter is obviously younger and prettier than the boxing champion’s ma. Does she really think that people are interested about her new 1M bag?

Honestly, the orange Hermes bag looked fake when she showed it to the media.

Can't she get contented with a Secosana instead?

And, (para kay Nong Jee) Gloria Arroyo. Is she not tired of staging it all? Come on, how could you be well in eight months if your medical specialists pronounced your ailment can "cause death"?

Agad, agad? Sige, mamatay ka na nga para end na.

11. Amanda Coling involvement in rape case vs Azkals. She may be smart, and have studied at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, but her credibility was questioned as to the talks that she was kicked-out from a men’s magazine’s sexiest victory because of her alleged involvement in a rape controversy.

Model Amanda Coling appeared in TV Patrol a soon as the news came out.

Her face was not shown on camera.

Had she answered the question directly, as to whether she was raped or not, Amanda would not have had her share of criticisms.

She said, “I already referred that matter [rape controversy] to my lawyer and he advised me not to be out in the open until we have studied the case thoroughly including all its ramifications. So for now, no comment on that issue.”

Amanda also said that the men’s magazine’s move [pulling her out for the event] was a harassment. “Why is my job taken away from me? This is my job.”

But on a personal note, how dare the Azkals players raped Amanda (only if it were true)!

10. Tsunami hard-hit Japan province. A tsunami aggressively destroyed northeastern Japan earlier this year killing at least a thousand people.

The 8.9 magnitude earthquake and the 10-meter high tsunami swept away cities and villages.

In light of the disaster, the Japanese government called on for residents to “move out” as one nuclear reactor has leaked small radiation.

I don't want to sound offensive but was it God's way of telling us not to be 'too' technologically-dependent?

9. Midas-Marquez ‘gay expression’ on national TV. Supreme Court spokesperson Atty. Midas Marquez’s reaction after a microphone fell during a press conference became viral, stimulating speculations that the lawyer is gay.

Marquez is married, and has two kids.

“It’s wishful thinking for those who are rooting for it,” told ABS-CBN.

But here is something you could ponder on: Piolo Pascual has a child, too; and so has Ogie Diaz.

8. Rebecca Black. Her “Friday” video may have a million hits on YouTube, young singer Rebecca Black still thinks singing is not her glass of champagne.

Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption Dante Jimenez said that Aquino disrespected that Court when he singled out Corona during the event. “This is disgusting. PNoy should apologize to the people for his ill-mannered ‘unpresedential’ behavior.”

Recently, Senator Franklin Drilon called for Corona to inhibit himself from the cases of Arroyo.

Drilon also revealed that Corona has consistently sided with Arroyo in the 19 cases involving the country’s former top official.

WHAT A TYPICAL PROVINCIANO DOES IN MANILA

My work schedule (for three years) in the province can be perfectly compared to a suitcase crammed with papers of different sizes and colors and material.

I only had one day, a Saturday, for rest. Sometimes, I don't use such, as (who gets rest on a Saturday, anyway) I’d get invites from our clientele to a party or business gathering.

After a month of finding my footing in a far-away land early this year, I realized that I had to move forward and be happy somewhere else; and am good without sex.

In the past, I promised not to go to Manila, as people would tell me stories on how congested the city is (e.g., stuck for two to three hours-traffic, etc); and dangerous for a typical provinciano with bad-Filipino accent, like me.

When I landed on the Manila soil, I deduced not everything the majority would tell you is reliable.

Traffic is not that bad in Manille. It is no dangerous place for a typical provinciano, too. It's the worst and most dangerous (kidding aside).

If you really think about it, Manille is a place where you could be creative and free your mind from the very slow-paced provincia life.

In Manille, you get a times two compensation. Your transportation and lunch fees are on the company; plus you get a lot of funny and interesting go-sees and sight-seeing(s) anywhere you go (including the looking young "business women" clad in revealing outfits.

In Manille, you’d experience a jammed theater showing a Sarah Geronimo or a Toni Gonzaga flick – which you would not experience in the provincial city.

In Manille, even an average pedicab driver looks artistahin in plain clothes (now I know better why most of the actors rise above poor backgrounds).

In Manille, sex is explicitly open (and diverse).

Over the weekend, I would always have a problem about where to go – I love malling, but a two-hour malling is just… too much. I am a finicky provinciano; that’s why I'd rather go out alone, or with a friend who shares same interests. I honestly feel uncomfortable when someone tells me s/he wants to go to this place, where I do not like to go to. And, I get disappointed easily. One time a friend insisted on eating at this restaurant with a 'Chinese' (not Chinese) name, and it turned out that the food sucked big time. From that day on, I promised not to waste P400 on an expensive-looking food.

So, if you are as fussy as I am in food, places to hangout, and the like, you might want to consider any of these for a weekend treat:

MALLING. (runner-up) Shangri-la Plaza on Shaw Boulevard is the best place to go on a weekend. Not a typical mall where the mall goers go to en masse, Shang has a wide-open public space for people to window-shop and real-shop. There, unlike other malls which would take you ages before you locate stores, stores are easier to find. It also has comfort rooms (pay and common) at every level.

(must-go) Glorietta 5 is my most favorite mall as it is new and most accessible to the Ayala-MRT station, SM Department Store, Greenbelt, among others. If you live within Makati area, you may take a jeep to this mall without hassles of getting stuck in traffic.

FOOD. (runner up) The first time I ate at Banapple, it was love at first taste. A friend and I was planning to eat here for umpteenth time but we always ended up canceling it as we could not find the branch on Katipunan. Upon learning that the pies and cheesecake resto has a branch at Paseo in Makati City – Banapple has been at the top of our eat-place priority list.

Among my favorites here include lasagna roll-ups, salpicao rafael, pan-friend porkloin with herb mushroom gravy, and creamy chicken pie.

Banapple also has the tastiest banoffee pie and blueberry cheesecake.

(must-go) I eat a lot and drink about four glasses of Coke ever meal, so Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken became an instant hit when I had my first Peri chicken at SM North Edsa.

I usually order the chicken combo meal (what else) and avail of the soup and beverage all you want at P49 promo. So, by the time I finish my meal, my belly would grow thrice bigger than the belly-size-when-hungry.

COFFEE AND DRINKS. (runner-up) If you want to go to a pub and restaurant with a warm ambiance in Manille, Murphy’s Makati is the place to be.

Murphy’s is an Irish pub located in the Central Business District of Makati. The place offers live music, trivia and literary events and a lot of other interesting things, including foreigners accompanied by classier "business women."

I love Murphy's as it features a quiz game every Tuesday for patrons wanting a good brain exercise. Categories include science, sports, health, food, music, among others. Last week, my group ranked sixth out of 14 teams.

(must-go) For people on the go, like me, 7-11 has never failed me yet. Why? First, it’s open 24/7. Second, I’m a fan of Big Gulp. Third, it has the friendliest work staff. Fourth, it’s everywhere. Fifth, it’s ice cream is better than McDonald’s. Sixth, items are organized; so on and so forth.

SHOES AND SHIRT. (runner up) Zara Men may have expensive pairs of shoes; but you cannot deny how stylish one would look with a pair on (amina!)

Likewise, its V-neck plain shirts (personally go for the mustard-colored) are also comfortable and fashion tasteful. They also look best when you tuck it in any maong pants.

(must-go) Dean and Trent is a Filipino brand.

Dean offers decent-looking shirts for young men at a very affordable price.

Before it closed down, it had stores at SM trinoma, Shangri-La Mall, Glorieta, Serendra, and at Power Plant Mall.

MANILA – To me, the only journey that matters is the journey of life. But that’s being philosophical about it. For the urban cruiser Isuzu Alterra, the tagline “for the journey that matters” refers to significant trips with family, friends, and loved ones—trips that you want to remember with happy memories, devoid of hassles and discomfort.

The weather condition that day was not very inviting. The skies were cloudy, and the traffic and rough roads were not any help in uplifting the spirit. But, surprise, surprise, being inside the Alterra makes all the difference. The New York Times writer, Jan Hoffman wrote that Justin’s popularity commenced when Scooter Braun of So So Def records saw the young singer’s video performing a number at his school.

A best-seller author spoke before the participants of the 2011 Ad Con, yesterday, November 17 at the Convention Center in Bicol region on the power of social technology in the ever-changing marketing world.

Charlene Li, a Harvard Business School alumna and co-writer of Groundswell, tackled on how social media harness relationships between the company and the public.

An expert on social media technologies and leader on strategic and interactive media and marketing, Li said the biggest sentiment from game changers is “feeling out of control.”

Li encouraged the delegates who attended the forum to “learn, know proper dialoguing, support, and innovate” to stay on top.

She added, “It’s about the relationships you create – that’s the true power. If you harness that power, you can change the game.”

Li cited an incident with computer company, Dell, where a photo was circulated showing its unit exploding, in 2006.

She said the company was able to “change the game” when they admitted what went wrong during the incident.

“Social media is not about the technology. It’s about relationships, saving relationships. You have to be authentic and transparent as customers are extremely forgiving when you enter into a promise and are truthful on what is really going on.

“Creating a culture of sharing and discipline are also needed to succeed. Climb the social business hierarchy of needs. Know the objectives, policies, workflow, practice sharing, and empowerment, among others.”

Li ended that to become great one has to learn from failing and moving on.

“Greatness comes from failing over and over again. We are afraid to fail. I encourage you to find opportunities to fail early on.”

“The Philippines is not just a place to see but a place to be,” Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. told some 3,000 delegates attending the 22^nd Philippine Adevrtising Congress in Naga City.

Citing the congress’ theme “Changing the Game,” Jimenez said Filipinos should agree on one fundamental idea – to change the way Philippine tourism is promoted.

“To succeed, we have to change how the game is played,” said Jimenez.

He stressed to the participants of the congress gathered at the Convention Center of the Camsur Watersports Complez in Pili the power of the social media to promote tourism.

“Some 27 million Pinoys are on Facebook. (There are an estimated_ 10 million users on Twitter. We have the power of buzz,” Jimenez said.

He also cited the country’s marketing and advertising community as the “oldest and most experienced” in the world.

“Manila is a television market even before some countries in Europe. We are part of the bunch of professionals who set the rules of the game in Asia,” Jimenez said.

Through the social media, tourists – local and foreign – must be convinced that the country is not just “a place to see but a place to be,” he stressed.

This year’s Ad Congress kicked off on Wednesday and concluded last November 19.

The Philippines is the right place to be “if you are tired of the impersonal lifestyle. (It is) a place to be when you want to find friends. It is a place to be if you are ready with lots of dancing and singing,” Jimenez said.

Meanwhile, Cadell, who tackled on “Social Media and How it Changes the Game to Brand Communications,” shared that in the next 25 years, advertising will be about making capitalism more humane.

“We have to survive as there is a growing consciousness that we are going to evaluate. We recognize that to be successful, our marketing should stand for things of real value,” Cadell said.

He stressed that to survive companies should make their brands more human. “We are no longer in control of our brands and marketing messages. The equity equation is transformed. We have to assume everything will be obsolete – everything except the consumer.”

On one hand, Schult, who spoke on “Branded Entertainment,” noted the traditional media could face a lot of conflicts today, as more and more devices are in the market right now.

“My child learned how to spell cars through I-pad. I was proud when I had him spelled it in front of my friends. He went on saying, ‘C-A-R-S search!” Schult shared which elicited a laugh from the audience.

He said that current trends in media include immediacy, impatience, instant gratification, honesty, participation, helping, community, relationships,

intimacy, authenticity and celebrity.

“When you combine trends, they may have very potent mix. However, despite changes, some things stay the same – content. Content is king.

LOCAL TV HONCHOS SHARE ONE STAGE

What would happen if the country’s top three television executives in the country share one stage?

The recently concluded 22nd Philippine Advertising Congress “changed the game” when the three media moguls – Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III of ABS-CBN, Felipe L. Gozon of GMA-7 and Manuel V. Pangilinan of ABC-TV5, shared a stage to tackle the future of Philippine television and media in the digital age, Friday, November 18, 2011 at the Camsur Watersports Complex here.

Gozon said that as social networking sites break new ground, Filipinos can now traverse all media seamlessly.

“Content made for television can be seen in at least three screens now: the TV itself, the computer and the mobile devices like the cell phones and tablets,” he said.

Gozon said that while the use of digital technology continues to rise, television will still be the medium to beat for many years to come.

“I believe television’s continued success will be driven by quality content. In media, you don’t just have to be different, you also have to be good. But for the television business, it is not just content, quality content is needed,” he said.

Pangilinan said the Internet has become a tool for the masses. “As it changes the way we act and our habits and customs, the Internet has democratizes us because of its easiness,” he said.
However, he said, as the Internet is “open” and “public,” users should be responsible, too.

“When you put something there, it becomes global. Internet is a public architecture. It changes habits and culture. So, you have to be responsible. It carries personal responsibility on your part. That is the disadvantage of the net,” Pangilinan stressed.

Meanwhile, Lopez said the future of media is shaped by people’s needs.

He added that ABS-CBN allows their market to consume content using the people’s choice of media.

“For many years, we were able to maintain a meaningful relationship with Filipino audience. This gives us a privilege to know their nature,” he said.

Lopez also said they invest in enabling technologies to leverage their ability to “connect to the heart.”

The Kapamilya official added: “Technology follows where human spirit wants to go. Working at ABS-CBN is not a job, but a calling. If you do right for the consumers, you can never go wrong.”

Pangilinan, chief executive officer of ABC-TV5, said the Internet has become a tool for the masses, and has the ability to 'democratize' because it is easy to use.

"Internet changes the way we think; our habits, and customs. It doesn't only carry messages to its market, but shapes and defines it as well," Pangilinan added.

Earlier, Gov. Villafuerte said he was honoured as the Ad Congress was graced by the biggest brands and personalities in the Philippine advertising industry. “Seeing you all here is surreal. Who would have thought that Camsur would be in your radar, and would be on the AdCon map?”

SOME Facebook users need to know that not everyone on their friends list deserve to read some of their wall posts -- which scream cheap taste.

I read from my wall recently a post from a very bored woman. She said she wanted to be challenged.

The person probably doesn’t understand how others work to the bone and become busy thus she thinks being bored is something to be really proud of.

Anyone could ‘un-bore’ themselves if they are willing to move a muscle.

The person I gather is someone who has self-actualized as she thinks people need to know life doesn’t pose a threat to her.

She needs a challenge or to be challenged.

She needs a challenge as motivation; or an endeavour which could escalate her from her past or the present.

Being bored doesn’t make you want a challenge or to be challenged. It means that you should stand up. Or, that you have not been working so well as most of our time is spent at Facebook-ing.

The person if she is persistent could also get herself killed at NLEX or SLEX.

She could rob a bank, could look for a boy to fuck (yes, she fucks the boy), or a horse to masturbate.

She needs a challenge like swim from Manila Bay to Iloilo River.

Too many challenges but she was left posting the nonsensical message on the social network.

We do not need a challenge to be inspired.

We just need to get up, feel the sun, and deliver.

There’s one funny thing I’d like to try on – powdering my face with Johnson’s.

I wonder why brown kids powder their face with a baby powder so obvious that you could not tell whether they are zebra disguising as human being, or human being on a zebra peg.

Like men and women with an orange hair, brown-colored breathing human beings have no right to put on a powder, unless it’s skin-toned.

A friend recently sent me an SMS asking as to how I was doing in Manila.

He was my former housemate on Washington; and worked at a nearby photocopying center on the same street. Aside from that he was also an assistant to a notary public.

Everyday his employer paid him P250; but only received P150 because he previously borrowed money to pay for his two-month rent.

My friend always borrowed money from his other friends -- and even demanded I feed him (Ay, I am not vying for the Congeniality award) --, and would clamor that he is hungry, could not eat right (three times a day) because he earns a meager salary (my fault!).

A month later, after being preoccupied with office work, I learned from him that he is back in Pampanga, jobless.

Job was hard and not paying much, he said as to the reason why he left work.

What with lack of college education, what is his right to choose what job suits him -- I told myself.

"You should not choose what work to pursue. Jobs are hard to find nowadays as competition tightens each day. One would even resolve into a clerical job," I said instead.

At 31, he is considered "expired" in his province -- what's more, he doesn't have a college diploma he can boast for. (But in Manila in Recto, anything is possible. One can even be a Upinian or an Atenean in a few minutes.)

Because job is hard is not valid as to why one gives up a position. What job is the easiest but compensates well?

I have been working in media for four years, and long been patient about accepting tasks not limited to my job description because I know that things are naturally hard, and would be harder if you give up soon.

Likewise, new nurses are also enduring work flow at the hospital just to complete their required volunteer work.

My female best friend, who topped our class in high school, even had to volunteer for months at one hospital in the province, amid her connection abroad.

Life is a tough game. The game gets tougher as it continues. If you are not playing it right, you may or may not have a second chance. But darn you if you expect a third or fourth chance.

Life is not a tough game where it only revolves around you. Of course, everyone joins the game. To win, it's just a matter of playing by the rules, and patience as you accelerate from one level to another.

As you fail or die, a restart can be an option -- but always remember that when the battery is out, you have to start all over again.

I went to a massage parlor at my location recently, and learned that it was offering services that induce erection.

THE Senate recently grilled officials of the Cultural Center of the Philippines as they allowed the exhibition of Mideo Cruz’s “Poleteismo.”

Jinggoy Estrada’s privilege speech was the basis as to the conduct of the inquiry onto why Cruz was given consent to display images the senator believed to be “ugly, insulting, blasphemous” and that “achieve nothing, enrich no one, and debase instead of uplift.”

He further said that the ‘art’ abused freedom of expression, and that artistry also has limitations.

It wasn’t the first time Poleteismo was not shown in public. It was also displayed at the Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines a few years ago. Nobody clamored as to how Cruz set up the installation. Nobody cared when the figure of Jesus Christ was made to look like Mickey Mouse. Nobody ever dared commented publicly on the sight of a fully-erect cock on the cross.

But when it opened July at the CCP, it drew ire among religious organizations as well as politicians who demeaned in chorus Poleteismo and its creator.

What Cruz did is mirror how our society operates; how the system has caused inconveniences amongst the innocent; and how we allowed and still allow ourselves accept things as they are; and worse, make believe that it’s norm.

Do the bashers really think that Cruz interprets Christ with a penis ashtray as is? One would ask, of all the representation? Why not? Recently social networking sites lambasted Manila Bulletin columnist James Soriano about his article “Language, learning, identity, privilege” on the said daily dated August 24, 2011.

The note told as to the obvious difference between languages English and Filipino, and how each is represented and fared in “social order.”

Soriano narrated that he has been using English as his mother tongue and thought it was the language of the learned.

He further said that while it is conducive to learn in English, Filipino, on one hand, is used as the “language of the world outside the classroom,” – the streets.

Soriano was bullied on the Web, and criticized amid his tactless remark vis-à-vis the Filipino language. Ironically, these people passionately bad-mouthed the writer in English.

How is Soriano wrong about Filipino? How is it different from how you treat the language?

Have you tried using Filipino in an interview? What were you more comfortable using when you try to write posts on Twitter and Facebook? And how about at the theaters showing Hollywood flicks? Is translation made available for those whose comprehension in the English language is ‘6 feet under’?

We ourselves are to be blamed as to why people are couraged in belittling Filipino, and the dialects.

It’s the same person who name people when they roughly speak Filipino or English. It’s the same you who continue un-bridging the gap between national and provincial. It’s you who think that when one speaks English, he has been afforded with quality education. It is you, too, who laughs at someone’s punto when s/he speaks to you. It’s you, no one else, who spoke Filipino to the tindera and katulong when you need their services.

We always have mean words to say versus the truth. Lies make us feel better, doesn’t it? It lessens the pain and manicures the ugly. Lies give us hope that somehow we could all just pretend something is that is exactly otherwise.

Lies lie within us. It will be inside us for the rest of our lives, until we slit ourselves open.

THE THIRD 'PEOPLE' YOU MEET IN THE SENATE

You meet three types of people going to and leaving the Senate in Pasay City everyday: the employees, the media men, and the visitors.

The visitors are the regular people who attend Senate hearings – students, supporters of agencies on probe, and families who have members confined at the hospital.

The latter goes to the Senate to ask for referrals from the senators.

“They do no give cash, only referrals,” said a lady who is bringing a plastic envelop – inside were medical certificates and other requirements needed before they could be afforded with a referral.

While on the jeep a day after Zubiri resigned, old women were saddened by the news, saying that they could no longer be granted with a financial help, since he is the only official they know in the Senate who provides help through money.

“Nagbibigay siya, teh, ng P2,000. Minsan mas malaki pa! Mabait talaga si Zubiri. Hindi siya mahirap kausapin, tulad ni _____ at _____. Kala mo kung sino kung umasta sa mga hearing-hearing, pero hindi din naman makatulong sa mga mahihirap. Mga hipokrito!” another lady said to her friend.

The absence of Zubiri in the Senate will probably let the poor people resort into being contented with referral receipts – contented and sulking.

In the onset of the probing on the alleged anomalous acquisition of slightly-used helicopters by Philippine National Police (PNP) from Manila Aerospace Products Trading, I overheard an old lady on a Buendia jeep told her aide: “Hindi ko mainitindihan kung bakit ginaganun nila si Mike [the former First Gentlemen]. Napakasama daw niya at magnanakaw, pero nung muntik na akong mabulag, binigyan niya ako ng P20,000 para maoperahan ako. Kung wala ang P20,000 na yun, bulag na sana ako.”

The other commuters did not react as they were either supporters of the senators who are finger pointing Mike Arroyo as the owner of the second-hand helicopters sold to the PNP; or not updated as to the recent issues in the country.

On my way home yesterday from the office, I reflected: What would have happened to Mike and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo if they could not afford their surgeries.

Would Mike resort to second-hand titanium implants for the former president’s surgery?; or would Gloria have a heart to support her husband in his latest ordeal?

I have not any idea on any measures by the Philippine government against child pornography.

In 2005, the United Nations Children’s Fund conducted a study on child pornography in the country; and discovered that it existed “as result of both foreign and domestic perpetrators seeking to exploit poor and vulnerable families and children.”

If truly the government has efficiently provided measures on the end of child pornography, the eye-sore I discovered recently spelled "failure."

The study noted that the fight to curb child pornography posed challenges such as it is “little understood and hard to investigate;” as well as victims and doers of the crime are difficult to identify, child age is hard to know, use of information technology is uncontrollable, among others.

But if the government is falling on deaf ears vis-à-vis the atrocious ‘growing’ of child pornography in the country, they better look around and open their eyes widely instead to know how appalling the crime has become.

A few months ago, when my friend and I met each other in Recto, we decided to meet at this mall located within the LRT Recto station area.

To kill time, because I gathered she’d never come on time, I walked around and feasted on stores and counterfeit items in the mall (I have been in the metro for not more than five months yet.)

On the upper part of the mall by the escalator, gays who have become uglier as they are now, say, “rotten,” were standing at the rail and guzzled their eyes on boys aged 13 to 20. These boys were fully made up as their faces were covered with foundation; were wearing either sando or loose shirts; and shorts.

The old gays were pursuing these young boys who were also teasing the old timer as to get them to bed for a pay.

When a friend finally texted that she has arrived, a boy came to me and asked, “Naghahanap ka ba o naghihintay ka rin ba?” I paused for a second, trying to fathom his quipping.

“Mukha ba akong baklang matanda na naghahanap ng batang lalake? Mukha ba akong kolboy na naghahanap ng baklang matandang makakasex?” I told the boy with a rotten teeth.

“Eh kala ko kasi naghahanap ka, kasi tinitingnan mo ako.”

“Paano naman kita hindi titingnan, tinitigan mo ako.”

He just smiled and I told him to leave.

I hope this will serve as a wake-up call to the local government whose thrust is also to protect the welfare of the children.

THE BAD CAB INCIDENT

TAKING a cab is probably the safest way to get to your appointment on time.

It’s also one of the means to reach your appointment minus the map and direction guides.

But when you are in Manila, some taxi drivers are inutile.

We always think of them drivers who have the authority in knowing the ins and outs in nitty-gritty, of the metro.

They know where the worst traffic congestion is; as well as where it is less and convenient for driving. They prolly memorize where this street connects, and where this road leads to, and all that jazz.

A few months ago, I took a cab outside the Philippine Senate as rain hardhit the metro. Confident that the driver knew where the street of my office is located, I didn’t bother asking if he truly knew where Dela Rosa in Makati is.

As we reached the Gil Puyat LRT station he told me to guide him through my office -- because it was his first time to drive a taxi. Ay sa ka linte! Nakalab-ot ka na sa Senado, wala ka pa katultol sang Makati?

So, we reached CityLand, and when I handed him my fare, he said: “Kulang po, Sir. Dagdagan mo na lang ng P50.”

“Puta, para saan ang P50? Bayad sa pagbibigay ko ng instructions? Dahil nabasa ang taxi mo sa ulan? Dahil na-hassle ang putang gulong mo sa basa? Dahil mas maginaw ang aircon mo kasi umuulan?” I said quietly.

I turned a deaf ear to his demand. And, why would I give him an extra – just because my Tagalog sounded how most of Ilonggos would speak? No way.

Just over the weekend, my high school and college friend and I went to Eastwood for a late dinner, and beer. When we finally decided to call it a day, we took a cab because it was drizzling and ‘early’ in the morning.

She told our destination to the driver, and the latter seemed confident as to the place. He even confirmed as to where my friend’s barangay is located.

After a few minutes of taxi riding, the driver suddenly asked: “Kaliwa ba o kanan?”

“Ang alin, kuya? Ang may putok sa kili-kili mo? Ang ginagamit mo sa pagjajakol?” I mockingly told myself.

My friend ended up teaching him the route to her boarding house.

Ampotah! Nagtaxi driver ka pa kung hindi mo pala kabisado ang Maynila! Sana nag-sikad ka na lang para isang kalye lang ang ibabyahe mo, gago!

When were about to alight his vehicle, I told him sincerely to thank my friend for the direction; and that it would not cause him any inconvenience anymore if he would have a pasahero who lives in the area.

He kept mum, and we gathered that in his mind he was already cursing left and right because his supposed chicanery didn’t work.

NOT HAPPY WITH THE SIZE?

NOW, I could say that size and performance (as one) makes a relationship work, interesting, strong, fun, last.

I know of someone who has a husband but still remains pretty amid her tough job as a manager. Her husband she told me was a businessman -- as successful man and all that jazz! She said she had no work before the man finally convinced her to 'do something'.

Everyday she tends to her work as well as her husband when they are 'on the floor'. I do not exactly know if they have a regular sex or that she is just not challenged by the minuteness of her husband’s remote control, thus her virginal guise.

I am confident that her husband’s remote control is just around two or three inches (like the one with your pirated DVD player) long (or is it ‘short’?). With his tubby-ness structure I could tell that it is microscopic and surrounded by a voluminous vegetable garden where bats and pterodactyls fly around as they look for something to rip (the picture reminds me of an old Scary Movie).

She was mum when I asked her as to how their sex really was. It was not really an over-the-top querying because she would usually tease me as to the size of my remote, and, if I was ever interested having sex with a girl or with a boy. I told her that amid anything that she'd like to think about me I could still give her a good sex – a sex that she would forget she runs a fries pursuit.

Sex is if you question on whether the relationship will work or not.

It’s neither face value nor financial capacity that “completes” the relationship.

Sex will always be an “it factor” that determines whether you are still in love or attracted to your partner or will be attracted to him or her after five or so years.

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III’s State of the Nation Address yesterday was probably better than the stand-up comedy along Cubao streets.

Who would have thought that he'd react as to how he'd say it in his transcript re: "Baka po kahit ngayong iba na ang pamunuan ng PAGCOR ay dilat pa rin ang mata ng mga umiinom ng kapeng ito."

This is in response to the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.'s (PAGCOR) spending of P1 billion on coffee during former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's administration.

The speech was well rehearsed and written amid the coughing which reverberated that the balding president needs to stop smoking.

I commend whoever his ghost writer was. I just hope that s/he is not among the ghosts being paid by the government however non-existing.

PNoy may have missed to name names of perpetrators of the alleged grand-scale corruption in the ‘past’, he nevertheless noted that she (of course it’s a she) will not succeed and as Risa Hontiveros, the lady rep who lost her senatorial bid last year, put it, she will rot in jail for life. Hala!

Did I just hear that Gloria was sent to St Luke’s in Taguig at 6:00 p.m., yesterday -- for unknown reason?

Last June, she was initially rushed to the hospital because of cervical radiculopathy caused by a compressed nerve root on her neck, as reported in Philippine Star.

SONA has proven to be the best venue for women (young and the uber-oldtimer) who want to boast their flair in fashion.

PNoy’s speech mattered only for hour and five minutes; but after that, camera whores flaunted their fashion while making papansin to the media. But of course, who is not going to flaunt a dress that could have fed 600 mouths (that is if per meal costs P50); and the fully-made up face which was likely P1,500 worth or more!

I saw Kris on the monitor but she was missing at the lobby while others were striking poses like there was no tomorrow. She was calling Jing Castañeda on the phone, so the latter probably had a tete-a-tete with the president as well as with Kris. Lucky girl (rolls eyes)!

I gather Kris and JunJun talked a lot of things as they were seen sitting next to each other during the SONA. The moreno looked like a 15-year-old boy that afternoon (he also looked thin in contrast to how we saw him on television). He was wearing a toothpaste smile which cried: I don’t care if you’re the president’s sister, but, really, have you ever learned from your past relationships -- but hey, I am sorry (again) I forgot I sat beside you a while ago?

Kris indeed NEVER learned. I though she said in her past interview that she's staying away from JunJun? PNoy must include Kris' 'disappointments in love' on his next SONA. After all, Kris has always been an issue.

I would have gotten JunJun’s reaction on the flooding in drizzling condition, in Makati streets; but Miriam Defensor-Santiago in an Inno Sotto gown, suddenly appeared.

Miriam was pleasant to everyone and weathered the stress of letting everyone take pictures with her. She was a ‘grace’ under pressure. She was the darling of the press.

I asked the senator if I could have a photo with her and she relented. She is my favorite.

I remembered my mother telling me earlier that I should take photos of myself with all of the senators present in the SONA.

Had I been compliant, I would have missed my deadline plus it was just overly desperate.

I just took two photos both of and with Miriam, using my phone. I don’t care if I just missed a once in a year opportunity.

Anyway, having a picture with all of the 23 senators does not make a sensational headline.

ENGLISH INVADES GUIJO

ONLY a few has a knack for reading – I mean reading not-so-interesting reads such as that with a sentimental taste.

I observe that when I write with assertion, everyone thinks that they are in power to stop me from all bark.

Well, if they really think highly of their opinions they may apply for a free membership on Blogger or Wordpress. Through that they could rant off their self-proclaimed “truths” and fallacies.

People just love hating people who show hate. But when the same people who show hate start showing love, methinks they are reduced until they become nil.

Let’s show some hate then.

A week ago my friend and her brother and her brother’s friend and her brother’s girlfriend and I went to a house cum bar in Makaeri – where my friend’s younger brother said that bands like Radioactive Sago Project, Up Dharma Down and the like perform.

I live in Makaeri but I don’t really get to go around the streets and avenues of the city that much because unlike everyone else who works in the city where gaymen have big muscles and streets are flooding under drizzling conditions -- my workplace is just a cartwheel away from my home.

We all came from a long walk in Binondo and window shopping to ease the armpit from its continuous downpour. After which, we all fled by bus to saGuijo to witness before our very eyes the resto cum music bar which has the it-was-always-about-the-music adage.

A P150 entrance with one free beer is not bad at all, we thought. But when we entered the ‘house’, people were on the floor enjoying what with the band playing and all.

I didn’t think that the opening band did pretty well their number. I could not fathom their poetry. They sang (if truly it was singing) as if they were just doing it in the bathroom facing an oval mirror.

My friend and I literally went inside to listen. Amidst our attempt to see what the band looked like, we couldn’t because rocker wanabes, friends of the bands, groupies and the lost (including ourselves) had already occupied the space – so we found ourselves pathetically sitting on the stairs listening to the lovers’ tete-a-tete, next to us – while holding a not-so-cold-anymore Beer Pilsen and Red Horse. We paid for that.

Before the band finished their last cut for the set, we went out; and sat next to a group of friends who could not stop from talking in English.

“Holy shit! Holy shit! Here’s the face I have not seen for a while!” said one fucking ugly guy on slippers to a long lost fuck buddy on the street.

“Hey dude! You look thinner now. And, look at that chest. Have you been working out lately?” retorted the other fuck buddy.

“Have you heard the latest?” the girl who looked like a call-cenur agent butted in.

“Wait, before you could spill that out, let me tell you what happened to me when this person tried to malign moi on the street,” said one fucking ugly guy on slippers to the girl who looked like a call-cenur agent.

He continued: “I was in my red Ford car – yeah, the latest model -- last week when this person tried to pick a fight – he tried to really pick a fight with me -- and make it up to me – and make it up to me, dude! He was crazy and I was like, I was like I was like and all that!”

Yada, yada, yada. Can’t these people think of other standing posts but ‘I was like… I was like’?

We patiently listened to the conversation of the inglesera and the inglesero consistent and comfortable of their language (forgive my arrogance, but amidst my obvious Ilonggo accent when I talk in Tagalog, I do not converse in English because I might be asked if I work for a call-cenur company – Again, I have nothing against them. People can automatically become ‘global’ when they learn the twang. So apply na!). And after a few minutes, they all sat on their seats and drank iced tea… quietly. Gin-kapoy sila, thank God!

I don’t hate them for talking in English. But had they lowered down their voices, they might give off the sophistication I’ve admired Filipinos for.

Let us be remembered that not every street or avenue or barangay is our supermarket.

People listen.

People read.

People live a life.

People love hating when they see hate.

We are all the same – but dif is between you and me… I appreciate the good little things in life.

WHY DO I MISS MY MOTHER?

MY mother has been a good provider to us since my father left her when my brother and I were still in grade school.

She would attend our PTA meetings, go up the stage to pin our ribbons, and tolerate our misdemeanours.

I remember when I was younger, when she’d introduce me to her friends, she’d tell them that I am the smartest among her children – that when she grows old she’d live with me; and that I don’t give her lemons.

My mother is a mere government employee; but she had me finish college; and amidst my brother’s academic peccadilloes she has always supported his endeavours.

Unlike some other mothers, she didn’t force me into taking the course she’d believe would make us rich, or if not, have a better life.

She told me that it is my life that I am living, thus I have to choose whatever that will make me happy.

I miss my mother now.

I miss her ranting and telling me that I have to study hard and find a good job in the future so I could support myself well.

I miss her getting mad at me for not texting her that I’d go home late, or not go home.

I miss her because a part of her hard work and love has made me become wiser.

I miss her because she’s my mother.

THE DANCER

SELECT dancers for the show are sitting on the long wooden bench by the certain hung at the back – farmers weeding and plowing and children playing in the rice fields.

The dancers are here to find dance partners for the afternoon dance and feast.
