P.R.I.N.T Press thanks Sydney Wilson for serving as an Intern and on the successful completion of her BFA in fall 2018. Her skills were a wonderful complement to this semester’s activities at P.R.I.N.T. She shares her experiences in the following essay:

It has truly been a great last semester here at UNT because of my ability to become involved with an inspiring community of knowledgeable printmakers through the opportunity of interning at P.R.I.N.T Press. The experience of hands-on learning at a professional print press is invaluable; it has better prepared me for emerging into the field of art post graduation and has taught me the ins and outs of working alongside a professional artist on an edition of prints they ultimately envision.

Hand-made buttons for the upcoming SGCI conference

The semester began with preparing for the upcoming SGCI conference in March 2019. SGCI is one of the biggest printmaking conferences in the country and for a part of it to be held at UNT is a huge deal. Working to make signage, buttons, stickers, and the program for a conference that an extreme amount of talented printmakers will likely be at is a remarkable prospect; to know that an artist you admire could end up wearing a button you made is an incredibly exciting concept!

Working with Alison Saar this semester was amazing; she brought such a fun energy with her into the press, and loved sharing her vast knowledge with interested students. For her print project, I was able to laser cut her cotton boll stencils in CVAD's Digital Fabrication Lab so that they could be glued onto a masonite board in a wallpaper type pattern for the first layer of her multi block print. I also worked alongside other studio volunteers to mix inks, prepare paper, create blocks and get a finished proof in the short span of a week. I found this fast-paced environment extremely energizing and I loved the way our group of printmakers really came together to complete the artist's vision (more photos here).

Alongside MFA candidate Aunna Escobedo, we began to dye paper and start the process of refinining proofs for Alison's edition. The edition has many intricate steps, and working together to find a flow that fits best took some time, but eventually we fell into the right printing pattern and began to gradually build up layers towards a finished print. Alison's print has a number of variables that affect the finished product, so each layer has to move slowly for the additional layers to end up working together in harmony. We continued to work with Alison on the final print, with minimal adjustments, even through the chaos of an unexpected studio move.

What I've learned the most from this semester, and Lari Gibbons in particular, is the power of perseverance through changing times, and to never stop working towards your end goal. Even though outside pressures made it near impossible, Lari still persists on making the best prints possible for Alison Saar and I find that extremely admirable. It's been an amazing semester learning from this set of inspiring ladies, and I hope to put the skill sets I've collected from them to good use in my future endeavors outside of UNT.––Sydney Wilson, BFA 2018

Make Monoprints with Lari Gibbons in Colorado!

Create unique, one-of-a-kind monoprints by combining traditional and cutting-edge approaches in this one-week workshop from Aug. 12 - 16, 2019 at Anderson Ranch in Colorado. Workshop participants will use the Anderson Ranch Fabrication Lab and the Patton Print Shop to examine how laser-cut stencils and woodblocks can expand the possibilities of a painterly, playful and multilayered approach to making hand-pulled prints. For those who have taken the workshop previously, please note that this year's class will add a jigsaw-cut block component.

Monoprints for Makers is taught by Lari Gibbons, an artist who explores new and traditional approaches to printmaking through collaborative, interdisciplinary projects. She is Professor at the University of North Texas and also directs P.R.I.N.T, a nonprofit fine art press. She received an M.F.A. from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

Thank you to Alison Saar, who was a visiting artist at P.R.I.N.T Press from October 14 – 19, 2018. Alison worked on a new project with students from Advanced Print Studio and Advanced Relief Printmaking. Printmaking faculty and students will continue working with Alison on the project until it is complete.

Alison’s project incorporates stained paper, four large relief blocks, and hand-tinted elements. During her visit to P.R.I.N.T Press, Alison held a class visit from Relief Printmaking to discuss her work and to explain the project.

Alison Saar is the recipient of the 2019 Southern Graphics Council International Lifetime Achievement Award. In March 2019, Alison will present a Keynote Lecture on Friday, 8 March from 3:30 – 4:30 pm at UNT’s University Union Ballroom 314 ABC.

In conjunction with the conference, Alison Saar will present the exhibition Mirror, Mirror: The Prints of Alison Saar, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation at the University of North Texas Art Gallery with a reception on Friday, 8 March from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.

The exhibition and conference events are sponsored by The Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, the UNT Mary Jo and V. Lane Rawlins Fine Art Series, SGC International, and the UNT College of Visual Arts and Design. Alison's visit was made possible by P.R.I.N.T Press.

Dr. Paul Laidler is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR) and Senior Lecturer in BA Illustration / MA Multidisciplinary Printmaking, University of the West England, Bristol, United Kingdom. The main focus of Paul’s academic activities stems from the close relationships that exist between technology, ideas and making in the graphic arts – particularly in the area of digitally-mediated print and its many offshoots. He contributes to critical discourse in print as a curator and arts writer, and is an associate editor for the Intellect Journal Drawing Research Theory and Practice. His research explores the impact of digital technology within the field of fine art printmaking, focusing on the advantages of using the traditional collaborative print studio model when generating and realising physical artefacts in the digital age. Over the years Paul has worked on print projects for artists such as Richard Hamilton, Lesley Dill, Joe Tilson, Gordon Cheung and Stanley Donwood.

Artists' Book Competition Call for Entries - UNT Special Collections

UNT Special Collections would like to announce a call for entries for the 10th Biennial Artists' Book Competition. The purpose of this competition is to encourage the development of students' work in the medium of artists' books, to foster the creation of artists' books, to reward excellence and creativity in the medium, and to build the collection of artists' books in the UNT Libraries' Special Collections.

Entries will be accepted in two categories: a Student Purchase Prize category and a Non-Student category. One winner will be selected from each category, but the $400 purchase award will only be given to the winner of the student category. Honorable mention awards will be given in each category, at the discretion of the jurors. Additional entries from both categories may be selected for purchase, dependent upon availability and budget restrictions of UNT Special Collections. All entries must have been created within the last two years to be eligible.

Works must be delivered to Willis Library December 4-15, 2017.

An exhibit of all entries will be on display in Willis Library from January 8-March 9, 2018.

2018 DIGIFAB Symposium Call for Submissions

The North Texas Digital Fabrication Group is excited to announce the call for submissions for our Third Annual Symposium, to be hosted by the Texas Woman's University Department of Visual Arts. The 2018 Symposium will include an extra day this time around, with the dates set as April 20 and 21 (Friday and Saturday).

The theme we have chosen is "Humanizing the Digital", which is intended to both celebrate ways that technology-based processes are connecting us to things beyond technology, and widen the circle of those involved in the conversation. We envision a symposium where a diverse range of speakers represent a cross-disciplinary range of topics within the overall theme. The session formats include presentations, panels, and workshops. And we encourage session structures that create space for dialogue to happen throughout.

The deadline for proposals is 10/30/17. Please pass the call along to anyone who might have an interest in proposing, and please reach out to anyone who you think would have something to contribute, but who might not see themselves as being connected to digital fabrication.
